Sizzling Summer Patios continued from front cover

Streetsville’s Patios

Port Credit’s Patios

Surrounding the village of Streetsville are numerous patios for all occasions. Streetsville is home to a pizzeria, upscale restaurants, and cafes, all with patios. Streetsville offers ten diverse patio options including: Cantina Mexicana, Chef’s Door, Cuchulainn’s Irish Pub, Goodfellas, Graydon Bar & Grill, Mondello Ristorante, Saucy, Starbucks, The Franklin House, and The Tea Room.

Whether it is noon or midnight, Port Credit is always buzzing with great venues and entertainment. The village ambiance naturally draws large crowds to the dozens of restaurants and bars along Lakeshore Road. Port Credit offers a spectrum of outdoor dining options for you to choose from. Port Credit has 59 outdoor places for you to sit and enjoy food and drinks all summer long. Ellen Timms, General Manager of the Port Credit BIA said, “Port Credit is a very vibrant part of the city, no matter what the season. In the summer the village definitely comes alive with the outdoor patios, festivals and events, and recreation along the waterfront trail.” At Colossus Greek Taverna the exquisite food, and beautifully designed and decorated venue and patio give you the authentic Greek dining experience. Colossus offers delicious food choices from traditional Greek appetizers, to pastas, to fresh fish, and specialty lamb dishes.

General Manager of the Streetsville BIA Angela Trewartha expresses her enthusiasm for the patios offered in the village: “Streetsville is lucky to have so many different patios to offer,” said Trewartha “from pubs, to fine dining and Italian and Mexican fare, there is something for everyone.”

Snug Harbour, also known as The Patio on the Harbour is one of Port Credit’s most famous hot spots. With the Credit Village Marina at its doorstep, a gorgeous lakeside view, and a gourmet menu, Snug Harbour patio is an ideal dining destination. Every Saturday evening, you can enjoy live music on the heated patio.

The highly anticipated pizzeria Goodfellas Wood Oven Pizza will open their doors to the public in the late spring of this year. Goodfellas offers authentic Neapolitan-style wood oven pizza, plus fresh homemade antipasti, pastas and desserts. Goodfellas is a large venue, fit with a patio located right in the heart of the village at Main Street Square. Goodfellas will be opening just in time for the summer weather to give their customers the opportunity to dine outdoors.

Two of Port Credit’s fabulous pubs with patios are The Crooked Cue and Roc’n Docs. The Crooked Cue offers delicious pub food in a relaxed, fun, and upscale environment. The 40-seat patio is a popular destination in Port Credit. Roc’n Doc’s offers great food, great music and a great patio. Roc’n Doc’s provides live musical entertainment every night of the week, featuring performance by local and mainstream bands perform every night. Roc’n Docs is an excellent location in the summer because of its rooftop patio.

No matter what time of day it is, the patios at Cuchulainn’s Irish Pub and The Franklin House are packed with patrons enjoying a delicious meal and beverage outdoors in the centre of the action, Queen Street South. With all the festivals and events happening in Streetsville this summer, Cuchulainn’s and The Franklin House are ideal locations. Patio space is ample at these pubs and you can almost always find a table outdoors. Cuchulainn’s impressive patio stretches around three walls of the venue.

Ten Restaurant and Wine Bar is a classy lounge with a centrally located patio. Throughout the week, Ten offers promotions including Corona Thursday’s where Corona’s are $4 all day, and a DJ will be playing the best in top 40 and dance. The patio is open concept and spacious and is a popular spot for Port Credit residents.

What is even more remarkable, Cuchulainn’s and The Franklin House are historically significant sites in Streetsville. The building where Cuchulainn’s is located was built in 1832, and The Franklin House was built in 1855, making both buildings over 150 years old. It is no wonder that Streetsville holds the largest number of historically designated buildings in Mississauga!

Port Credit and Streetsville offer dozens of eateries with quality patios that draw large crowds every evening, particularly on weekends. Enjoy the summer air, sitting outside with beers or lattes until the sunsets. Visit the patios in the village this summer and be at the centre of all the action for each of the festivals, events and celebrations taking place. Patio season is always over before we know it, so embrace every opportunity to dine at one of the village’s restaurant, bars or cafés. For an outstanding culinary experience, check out the village patios and discover why many of these venues are buzzing both day and night.

It is that time of year again when the streets of Streetsville begin to get busy again. Main Street Square is already swarming with residents who are out enjoying the beautiful summer weather. “Everyone in Streetsville looks forward to patio season,” said Trewartha “After the long winter we had, it is great to get out and enjoy the sunshine and a nice drink or meal with friends.”

Double winner!

Recently, The Old Credit Brewing Co., the historic brewery located at 6 Queen Street West in Port Credit, was recognized with two Ontario Legislation awards for its craft beers. The Pale Pilsner and Amber Ale were both winners at The Ontario Legislature. The beers competed against beers from all across Ontario and it is an honour to receive the prestigious Ontario Legislation Award.

Old Credit Brewing Co. is a special place as the family atmosphere is draped all over the walls. Next time you need a case or keg of beer, try the Old Credit Brewing Co. and treat yourself to an award-winning product made by people who care. Old Credit Brewing Company is located at 6 Queen Street West in Port Credit. Phone 905-271-9888.

These beers are no strangers to winning awards – in the past both craft beers have brought home several medals from provincial and national competitions. Brewery owner Aldo Lista’s success proves that complacency simply isn’t an ingredient in The Old Credit Brewing Company’s unique brewing procedure. The brewery uses a unique process of ice fermentation and ice maturation. The extended brewing process takes three months, while typical high production brews are ready in about a week. The extra time results in a smooth light tasting beer with no after-taste. The extended brewing process removes the sugar content from the beer - leaving Old Credit drinkers with no headaches, bloating or hangover. Old Credit Brewery is also a past winner in many categories for Canadian Brewing awards. The Canadian Brewing Awards have emerged as the premiere competition for judging the quality of Canadianbrewed beer. A Canadian Brewing Awards medal is now a widely recognized symbol of brewing excellence in Canada as the competition welcomes breweries of all sizes. The Old Credit Brewing Company may be small but it makes a quality product and is respected nationally for several beers. The

Family Fables: Not just another pretty little town! By Deanne Clipperton It doesn’t surprise me when visitors or new villagers come to Streetsville for the first time and can’t stop raving about our town. For those of us who live here and experience the uniqueness of the village daily it may be easy to forget how special it is. It is like stepping into another time, somehow we have managed to keep the small town feel in the middle of the city. For those who have not experienced Streetsville , it is hard to describe but those of us that have and continue to experience it will never forget it and find it hard to leave. Because what really makes Streetsville special to me is a feeling, a sense of home that I don’t feel when I wander beyond the borders of the village, and I know I am not the only one. The village is so many things ; History, beautiful parks and benches throughout town so that you can stop and soak up the history and the atmosphere or just day dream of times gone by as you enjoy one of our villages treats whether it be a butter tart, cupcake, scone, ice cream or coffee, we’ve got it all. The tree lined downtown, the small businesses that take such pride in what they do, the historic buildings so well cared for by the businesses and homeowners that inhabit them. All remind us of the people who came before us and built such a wonderful village. But those villagers somehow passed along their pride and love of community to all of the villagers that would follow. But I think what really makes the village feel so much like home is the people. All of those that have come before us who made this town what it is and the people who continue to make it what it is today; strong, proud, resilient, caring and full of character. Over the next several months the centre of town will undergo renovations that will add to our community by providing a beautiful place for people to gather and celebrate the past present and future of our village for years to come. Thank you to all you villagers because without our caring villagers we would be just another pretty little town.

Streetsville residents and people from all over Mississauga look forward to the Bread and Honey Parade each year because of the unique, eye catching floats, characters and costumes. The parade takes place on Saturday June 1st from 10:00am to 12:00pm along Queen Street South, from Britannia Road down to Church Street. This summer parade represents the true spirit of the Streetsville Community. This year the festival will be celebrating a Homecoming Theme, representing the Village of Streetsville and the Bread and Honey Festival as a place for old friends to reunite and make new ones.

The Bread and Honey Festival wouldn’t be possible without the kindness and dedication of several hundred volunteers lending a helping hand. A special thank you to all those who devote so much time and energy to make the Bread and Honey such a great success!

It wouldn’t be a homecoming without our Honourary Homecoming Queen. Bread and Honey is pleased to have Ellen Cameron (Dimitrov), the last named Miss Streetsville Beauty Pageant winner in 1974. She participated in the very first Bread and Honey Parade, and will be taking part in this year’s parade. Look for Ellen Cameron (Dimitrov) on the Bread and Honey Float on Saturday June 1st. Transforming Streetsville’s Main Street Square into a Vibrant Public Space: Streetsville Village Square By: Lindsay Howe Main Street Square, the heart of Streetsville will be undergoing major redevelopments to improve the quality and functionality of the space. The revitalization plans will allow the space to be utilized properly, making the square more accessible to host events and accommodate a much larger crowd. The space will be called Streetsville Village Square, a comfortable setting for community members of all ages to spend quality time with their families and to socialize with friends. The space will be transformed into an active and lively destination that promotes social interaction, mental health, and well-being for all. The village square has always been an excellent location; it continues to be a natural gathering point and a historic landmark within the community. Notwithstanding the town square’s current charm, due to the limited size of the space and the design, it doesn’t function well as a public gathering place or an event space. This $3.1 million dollar revitalization project will transform the village square into a dynamic gathering place. Expanding and revitalizing the space will enhance the quality and functionality of the village square. Councillor George Carlson expresses his enthusiasm for this project stating:

the cooler weather, as well as a Christmas market will make the square a warmer, more winter-friendly setting. Having an attractive and inviting community space that is open all year round will keep people coming out to the village, even on the coldest days to participate in the events and activities taking place. The Streetsville Main Street Square redevelopment will create an outdoor space and destination that respects and preserves Streetsville’s heritage and village history. An integral component of this project is the relocating of the Streetsville Cenotaph to the north end of the square to give it the reverence it deserves. The Cenotaph, an important piece of Streetsville’s history will also be refurbished, as is it currently in poor condition. The monument has experienced many years of wear and tear, partially due to the location being a popular place for biking, rollerblading and skateboarding. Luckily, The sacred Streetsville Cenotaph will be moved to a more quiet and respectful place of honour.

“This is an extremely exciting opportunity for the village of Streetsville. The new Streetsville Village Square will vastly increase tourism and traffic for local businesses and increase attendance at community events. The redevelopment will create a walk-able town square for people to feel safe in and have a lot of fun.” Some of Mississauga’s most celebrated festivals and events already take place at Streetsville Village Square. These well-known festivals include: The Santa Claus Parade, the Streetsville Tree Lighting Ceremony, Remembrance Day Ceremony, Canada Day Ceremony and the Bread and Honey Festival. Talented architect Randy Jamieson is the Senior Project Manager for this project, and he has created a truly spectacular design that will transform the square into a vibrant gathering place for the whole community. The square will be updated and expanded, enabling larger festivals and celebrations to take place in Streetsville. The area can be closed off to make way for various types of community events. From movie nights, to outdoor concerts, to weekend markets, the possibilities are endless. With the village streets bustling, traffic to local businesses will increase. Moreover, it is hoped that the Farmers’ Market will be relocated from its current location at the Streetsville Go Station parking lot, and moved to the centrally located village square

Last fall the City of Mississauga worked closely with the firm 8-80’s Cities to engage the community in presentations, information sessions, on-site events and interviews. Community participation is the key to the creation of vibrant and healthy public spaces. The city has asked for community involvement in the early planning stages of this project in order to come up with a best design and functionality for the space. By getting residents involved in the planning, a sense of belonging and pride is established.

In order to accommodate this range of events, many upgrades to the Streetsville Village Square will be implemented. To provide outdoor entertainment, a canopy covered performance area will be added, fit with a stage and sound system. The new Streetsville Village Square will be nicely decorated, with new elegant furniture. The square will offer more diverse and flexible seating areas for its residents. The idea is to make the square more of a hot spot for people who live or work in Streetsville by creating a space where they can enjoy their lunch. More trees and flowers will be added, to increase the natural ambiance of the square and make it more of a green space.

The wants and needs of the Streetsville community are reflected in the final report and have been factored into the final design of the square. Results indicate that the community wants the square to be better utilized as a public space. The community is in mutual agreement that the area should be green and comfortable, pedestrian friendly, capable of hosting community events and activities, containing history and culture, and encompasses the shops and markets. Site observations were conducted around Streetsville Main Street Square about the age of those that utilize the square. The social observations conclude a definite lack of older adults, as well as youth and children coming through the square on a regular basis. Only 10% of the people observed in the square were between the ages of 0 – 12, and only 11% between the ages of 51 and 65+. This indicates the new square must accommodate the interests of the two age groups. This may include adding a small child-friendly area in front of Murphy’s, as well as holding events and markets that will draw in residents over the age of 50.

Over the years Streetsville Main Street Square has remained a busy location in great weather, but the space is not utilized during the off seasons. Luckily, the redevelopments will help create a space fit for all seasons. Outdoor heaters in

Construction will begin this summer and it is hoped to be complete before the Streetsville Remembrance Day ceremony on November 11th. The City of Mississauga received $990,000 from the Federal Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund towards revitalizing Main Street Square. The Streetsville Legacy Fund has been started to raise additional funds through community fundraising, The Streetsville BIA is committed to a fundraising campaign this summer to raise funds to help support the site programming and maintenance. You can view the final design and the 8-80’s Cities final report on the city website at: www.mississauga.ca/portal/cityhall/streetsvillemainstreetsquare. Buskerfest Returns to Port Credit

The Mississauga Football League is on the Move!

By: Lindsay Howe

Buskerfest is one of Port Credit’s most highly anticipated festivals. This three-day event begins Friday, August 16th and runs through to Sunday, August 18th. Eight staging areas will be set up across the downtown core of Port Credit.

So much is happening in the league, after over 40 years on the field providing the youth of Mississauga with football teams the Mississauga Football League is seeing more sudden growth than they ever remember seeing in such a short period of time.

Over 40 professional Buskers will perform daredevil stunts, including four spectacular fire shows, astonishing the crowds with their magnificent stunts. From street theatre, to music in the Marina and lots of magnificent statues, Port Credit’s Buskerfest will be packed with entertainment this year.

Their Flag Football programme, which is only heading into its 3rd season this spring is sold out. The spring tackle teams, brand new this year, also sold out! And the traditional fall teams which the league has become known for over the past 40 plus seasons look stronger than ever.

Among the talented buskers you will discover magicians, mimes, comedians and cartoonists. You can also experience the amazing sword swallowers, escape artists, acrobats and jugglers. All buskers will be performing random acts to showcase their sheer talent and leave their audiences in awe. Buskers battle it out, making each performance more exciting than the last.

This year alone the Mississauga Football League will field 37 teams! That is a lot of kids playing football! The excitement does not stop on the field; they just recently consolidated all their equipment into a storage/office space and created for the first time in their history a MFL Club House.

Buskerfest features brilliant performers from Sweden, Italy, The Netherlands, Australia, Brazil, USA and Canada. There are lots of new acts to experience, along with a few of the old favorites. Some of the exciting performances to see this year include: aerial acts, spectacular fire performers, break-dancers, stilt walkers, balloon artists, hoola hoopers, and pogo professionals. Watch out for the fly-by pitches being thrown throughout the village.

This new facility in the heart of Port Credit offers the MFL the chance to finally be under one roof, a meeting space, a space to register new players and really just gives everybody in the league a second home! Andre Durie #32 of the Toronto Argos and former Mississauga Football League player dropped by a couple weeks ago and helped open the Club House.

The awe-inspiring Xtreme Finale will take place on Sunday, August 18th, featuring every Busker performing in support of local charities. Come out to Buskerfest to experience outrageous comedy, marvelous acrobatics and daredevil stunts. Don’t forget to visit Busker Academy in Port Credit Memorial Park where you can learn all the tricks of being a busker yourself!

When chatting with the volunteers of the league you find out that football really does offer something different, they provide the loan of all equipment for the players, no experience is needed and everybody plays. Jack Finley, current President in the MFL, stated the philosophy of the MFL is that every child comes out to play and we let them!

Experience some of the most talented buskers in the world at Port Credit’s 8th Annual Buskerfest. Buskerfest hours are as follows: Friday August 16th 7 p.m.- 11 p.m. Saturday August 17th 1 p.m.- 11 p. m. and Sunday August 18th 1 p.m.- 8 p.m. Check out the performers and photos on the Buskerfest website at www.portcreditbuskerfest.com.

Additionally, some smaller cafes and takeout restaurants in Streetsville will also take part in The Taste of Streetsville experience, offering their own taste specials at a lower price point. Chefs from participating restaurants across the village will create custom Taste of Streetsville dishes, featuring the best of what each restaurant has to offer. The Taste of Streetsville media launch is scheduled for the week prior to the commencement of the culinary event. The launch will be held at the new Goodfellas restaurant located at 208 Queen Street South. Details on the launch party, as well as the full list of participating restaurants will follow. Visit the BIA booth at upcoming festivals and events this summer, including The Bread and Honey Festival. You will be able to take a sneak peek at the prix fixe menus from the participating restaurants.

Last year, the participating restaurants donated $.50 from every Taste of Streetsville prix fixe menu sold to benefit The Pediatric Oncology at the Credit Valley Hospital. Proceeds went towards building an expansion wing for the hospital. This year, The Taste will continue to donate proceeds to The Credit Valley Hospital Foundation. Catherine Carter, Chief Communications Officer for The Credit Valley Hospital Foundation said, “The Streetsville BIA’s Taste of Streetsville event has been raising money for Trillium Health Partners, Credit Valley Hospital for the past three years and we are very grateful for their ongoing support.” Funds raised from this year’s event will be directed towards the upcoming redevelopment of the Emergency Department at Credit Valley.

Indulge your appetite, take part in Taste of Streetsville to taste a wide variety of culinary delights, and experience what the village has to offer. Visit the various restaurants from September 9th to October 6th and order from their special dinner menus. You don’t want to miss out on the delectable dishes offered at an affordable price!

Carter discloses that this planned redevelopment will see the Department redesigned to better maximize patient flow and create separate, specialized treatment areas for paediatrics and seniors, among many other enhancements. Carter explains, “The redevelopment of the Emergency Department is part of the upcoming third phase of expansion planned for Credit Valley, which also includes the doubling in size of the current Critical Care Unit and the addition of new operating suites in the Surgical Unit. Construction is currently scheduled to begin in 2014.”

Beautification Projects in the Village of Streetsville By: Lindsay Howe The Village of Streetsville is well known and celebrated for its well-kept streets and verandas. Much landscaping is being done, including the replanting of lush flowers along the streetscapes. Streetscape Mississauga continues to recognize the natural beauty of Streetsville, as part of their annual city wide garden contest. Streetsville has been awarded Best BIA Streetscape for 3 years in a row. Ten new Victorian style benches have been placed around Streetsville, encouraging residents to sit, relax and enjoy their beautiful surroundings. “Our village streetscape is very important and one of the highest priorities each year for the BIA,” said Todd Smith, Beautification Director for the Streetsville BIA. “Our new benches are an exciting addition to Streetsville, and we hope to add even more over the coming years.” Local service groups, local businesses and local residents have already sponsored all of the ten benches. Each bench features the new BIA logo and contains a plaque providing information about the sponsor. A few of the benches are sponsored by families and loved ones in the memory of someone who has past. The plaques on these benches contain a heartfelt message to commemorate the memory of this special person. Other benches were sponsored in acknowledgment of businesses and the work they have done within the community.

fied and clean for the residents, businesses and visitors. The annual planters and hanging baskets are going out at the end of May and beginning of June. The beautiful, award-winning flowers enhance the overall ambiance of the village. Across the Village of Streetsville you can also discover new garbage cans to encourage a litter free environment. These are among a few of the fresh new changes residents and visitors will experience as they stroll through the neighbourhood.

The Streetsville BIA strives to maintain this image of beauty and cleanliness by taking on many projects and initiatives to keep the streets and parks beauti-

The Streetsville BIA plans to replace all of the older benches in the village with new ones in the next couple of years. If anyone would like to sponsor a bench contact the Streetsville BIA. The BIA office is located at 280 Queen Street South. Contact the Streetsville BIA at info@villageofstreetsville.com or 905-858-5974.

School Mural is a Symbol of Hope for the Credit River

Port Credit Farmers’ Market

By J. Knox The ever popular Port Credit Farmers’ Market returns to full swing on June 15th and promised to be more exciting than ever.

On Friday, April 3rd, students and staff at Lorne Park Public School revealed their very own Stream of Dreams Mural with over 200 hand-painted fish that swirl and flow through a length of chain link fencing at the front of their school.

A new Artisan’s Row has been added featuring six new crafters and artists each week. “Our aim is to keep our little market interesting, so regulars will feel that there is something new happening every Saturday morning” according to Ellen Timms, Port Credit BIA General Manager. Also scheduled are weekly events like food demonstrations featuring Port Credit cookbook author and gourmet, Amy Smith. Amy will be appearing once a month to show how to cook up fantastic food featuring ingredients from the Farmers Market. Also new, the Junior Diggers Club - a kid’s club workshop that teaches kids how to garden and sends them home with a new plant.

Stream of Dreams is an educational program offered by the Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) and the Stream of Dreams Murals Society. As well as creating their dream fish mural, students participated in a workshop led by the CVC and learned about the importance of their local watersheds and the things they can do to protect it.

Weekly live entertainment continues and a few new vendors have been added. Farmers’ Market Coordinator Karen Cecy tells us she’s excited to be bringing a Knife Sharpening Expert to the market.

Parent volunteer Christine Scott who spear-headed the project with the CVC, helped to organize the students and parent volunteers in cutting out, painting and installing their ‘Dreamfish’. Community partners who also helped in the project were RBC, Rona at Royal Windsor and General Paint.

The market opens June 15th and runs through to Thanksgiving weekend. The hours are Saturdays 8 am-1 pm at the Elmwood Avenue municipal lot. For more information contact the Port Credit BIA at 905.278.7742.

Brubacher Report: Market Conditions Promote Price Growth in April Greater Toronto Area REALTORS® reported 9,811 sales through the TorontoMLS system in April 2013, representing a dip of two per cent in comparison to 10,021 transactions in April 2012. Both new listings during the month and active listings at the end of April were up on a year-over-year basis. “Despite the headwinds we have experienced in the housing market this year, April sales came in quite strong in comparison to last year. As we move through the spring and into the second half of 2013, the demand for home ownership should continue to firm-up relative to last year,” said Toronto Real Estate Board President Ann Hannah.

Sunday, June 9, 2013

“It has been almost a year since the federal government enacted stricter mortgage lending guidelines. It is realistic to surmise that some households, who originally put their decision to purchase on hold, are once again looking to buy,” continued Ms. Hannah. The average selling price for April 2013 transactions was $526,335 – up by two per cent in comparison to April 2012. The MLS® HPI Composite Benchmark Price was up by 2.9 per cent. “The condominium apartment segment in the City of Toronto was a key driver of price growth in April, with both the average selling price and the MLS HPI apartment index up on a year-over-year basis. The improved condo sales picture, with Toronto sales down by only one per cent compared to last year, suggests that interest in condo ownership may be improving,” said Jason Mercer, TREB’s Senior Manager of Market Analysis. The average sale price in Mississauga as reported on TREB was $478,427 based on 2463 sales year to date. I look forward to seeing everyone at the 2013 Bread &Honey Festival. Lorne Park Public School Celebrates 90 Years

A&E - MARTY

By J. Knox

By: Hugh Smith

On Saturday, May 11, 2013, Lorne Park Public School celebrated its 90th Anniversary by inviting parents, community and Alumni to enjoy an afternoon of historical memorabilia, games, music, spirited dancing and cake.

Stephanie McKenzie remembers her 2012 MARTY Awards experience. Attending as a media delegate, she had an intuitive moment during an interview. “While I was being interviewed by one of the TV channels last year, I said this year that I would be attending as a nominee,” McKenzie said.

Photos Courtesy: Joel Robertson, Spirit of the City McKenzie, who is currently the host of HazeFM.ca’s Saturday night show, SugarNSpice, would be proven accurate this year, as she was nominated for the People’s Choice Award by the Vice President of the Clarkson Business Improvement Association, Alice Fahey. “I was really honoured,” McKenzie said of the nomination. “My jaw hit the floor. I almost cried because [Alice Fahey’s] referral letter really did talk about my passion and my dedication to the city of Mississauga.”

Among some of the VIP Alumni in attendance was Rita Kennedy, whose maiden name was Rita Curran when she attended the school’s inaugural year in 1923. The successful event was “a year in the making” said the school’s principal Michael Bartalos who credits parent volunteer, Christine Scott for planning and organizing the momentous occasion.

The Mississauga Arts Awards, or MARTYs, have been presented by the Mississauga Arts Council for the past 19 years, honouring artists in 14 different categories for their contribution to the Mississauga arts scene. Luiza Sadowski, MAC’s communications coordinator, said that McKenzie has contributed to many initiatives in Mississauga. “She’s definitely shown a lot of leadership for not-forprofit organizations,” Sadowski said. “She helps out the Mississauga Earth Council a lot through promoting a lot of our events.” It was through this work with organizations such as the Clarkson BIA that helped McKenzie win the People’s Choice Award with over 3000 votes, representing a record breaking 50% of the votes cast. “It comes right back to being humbled,” McKenzie said of her feelings on winning the award. “Knowing that that many people out there supported me being that young fresh talent in Mississauga.” The award could present McKenzie with many future opportunities, according to Sadowski. Past winners have included Oscar Peterson, Mose Scarlett, and JUNO award winner Liberty Silver. “With all the congratulatory messages that did come in, people have said ‘this is just the start for you,’” said McKenzie. “There’s so much more going forward in the future, and I will always remember the Mississauga Arts Council for being the outlet in which I was able to receive the People’s Choice Award.”

Your child wants contacts. It might be a better option than you think

Image Collections Annual Free Comic Day was a Success

By Silvia Yeomans, Queen Spectacle & Kingsway Opticians

By: Lindsay Howe

Moms and dads are always leery about when their children ask to get contact lenses. Rightfully so. It’s such a milestone in a child’s life to take on such a responsibility. If your child is involved in sports, rehearsals, lessons or has a high prescription, this might be a better idea than you think!

Image Collections in Streetsville held its 13th Annual Free Comic Book Day event on Saturday, May 4th.

Parents would rather their children take their glasses off (so that they don’t break them) than wear glasses. Makes sense! But, the child cannot see! Their depth perception is off, they have no peripheral vision and they may not see the ball or target as well as they do when they have the proper correction in front of their eyes. And, their confidence might be lost.

The event was a huge success; over 500 people showed up, eager to choose from the wide selection of free comic books available. Owner Todd Mara, was anticipating a large crowd because so many customers enjoy the comic books at Image Collections, but even he was surprised by the amount of people that showed up and lined up to get into his store.

Some children play competitive sports or have dance recitals and the safety and comfort are much better in contact lenses than some safety glasses. The world of contact lenses has improved so much that your child now has the comfort and convenience of daily disposable contact lenses. There are some that come with the UV protection in them, so you know your child’s eyes are protected.

Each person in attendance had the opportunity to pick out four free comic books from the large selection of choices that were offered. Every genre was represented in over 60 different choices available. You could find everything from Superman to The Walking Dead. Some comic book fans wanted mainstream comics, such as superhero comics, whereas others were looking for more independent comics.

The contacts are easy. Your child can wake up in the morning, put them in, throw away the disposable case, don’t worry about the solution and they’re easy to carry around, and when they’re done wearing them, they just toss them in the garbage. No fuss. The most difficult part is putting the contact lenses in, and taking them out, and that part is not that difficult.

Out in the parking lot beside Image Collections, you could meet and greet seven different independent comic book writers and artists. This was a great opportunity for the artists to show off their work and hand out copies of their comics to eager comic book fans. There seems to be a monopoly in the comic book industry where it becomes difficult for the mini comics community to thrive and be successful.

Eyeglasses will still be required. If your child normally wears glasses for distance, you will still need to make sure that they have a pair. Contact lenses should not, under any circumstances, be worn from the moment they wake up to bedtime, everyday. If the intention is to wear the contact lenses, you (as a parent) will have a hard time finding an optician willing to allow for that abuse. Their young eyes need to be respected and allowed to rest.

Owner Todd Mara enjoys seeing his customers get as excited for an independent comic as they would a mainstream one. Mara states, “Free comic book day gives an even playing field; smaller publishers can produce a comic book that is given away and receives the same type of exposure that a bigger comic book would.”

If your child is younger, and contact lenses sound like something that would benefit their performance, a licensed Optician would teach the mom or dad to insert/remove the lenses. Having the option to wear contact lenses is such a wonderful option, and yet, it’s still at the supervision of the parents.

Comic book fans had a lot to look forward to in 2012 with the release of major comic book inspired films such as The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing SpiderMan and The Avengers. This year will be an even bigger year at the theatre for comic book fans with the release of twelve different comic book movies. Everything from big budget productions like Iron Man, Man of Steel and Wolverine to smaller independent works such as Bullet to the Head, and R.I.P.D.

Licensed Opticians are there to educate the parents to see if this is something that would benefit their child and if it’s something that will be supervised and not abused. Contact lenses still require good hygiene and proper care. If you think this is something that you’d like to consider for your child, feel free to speak to your Licensed Optician if it’s right for them. Our team is fully trained and specialized in children’s eye care as young as the infant stage.

Free Comic Book Day happens on the first Saturday of May across North America and around the world. Mara boosts about the importance of this annual event stating, “Free comic book day gives us a chance to thank all of our regulars who have been so supportive of us over the past 23 years. One of the most gratifying parts of having a business is seeing the interaction between customers who don’t know either, striking up like minded conversations about something they both enjoy, whether it is a movie adaption, or a comic book storyline.” Free Comic Book Day is a great way to bring together the comic book fans in the Streetsville community.

If you’d like to contact us for a fitting or see if this will suit your child, feel free to visit us in Streetsville, Port Credit or The Kingsway. We are your neighbourhood Eye Care Team! For more information, visit our website, www.queenspectacle.com.

Are Your Kids Safe at School?

LET’S GO TO THE SYMPHONY!

By J.Knox

Concerned Peel Parents for the Health & Safety of ALL Children hosted a Wi-Fi information session at the Port Credit Legion on May 9th and believe our children’s health while they are at school is at risk, the evenings Keynote speakers Dr. Magda Havas of Trent University and former Microsoft Canada President Frank Clegg, agree also.

Join the MSO for our exciting 42nd season under the baton of newly-appointed conductor Denis Mastromonaco. On October 12th, “Russian Treasures” introduces the mysteries of the Slavic soul, with Glinka’s Ruslan and Lyudmila Overture, and Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, performed by world-renowned pianist Valerie Tryon. Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition brings the concert to a majestic close.

In March of 2012, the Peel District School Board approved $7 million Learning and Technology Plan that once implemented would see all Peel Elementary and Secondary Schools installed with Wi-Fi Internet connection by fall of 2013. Wi-Fi is a technology that allows electronic devices to exchange data wirelessly using electromagnetic (radio frequency) radiation, the same technology that is used in microwaves, baby monitors, cell phones/cell towers, smart meters and cordless phones. Dr. Magda Havas, a Canadian expert on the health effects of electromagnetic radiation, warns that students and teachers are going to become ill and states that Health Canada’s Safety Code 6 (SC6), a document that school boards use as their guideline to the safe use of, or exposure to radiation emitting devices, is outdated. Criticism from the world’s leading scientists of the standards set out in SC6 during public hearings of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health three years ago encouraged the World Health Organization to place all radio-frequency radiation on the Class 2b Cancer watch-list in 2011.

Trumpeter Guy Few has long been a favourite with MSO audiences. On November 23rd, he headlines “Heroic Brass”, playing Haydn’s light-hearted Trumpet Concerto. Verdi’s Nabucco Overture and Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony complete the program.

“Now we have the American Academy of Environmental Medicine writing a letter to our school boards saying their doctors are already treating kids who are sick from school Wi-Fi exposure.” says Frank Clegg, CEO of Citizens 4 Safe Technology. “It’s unconscionable to ignore all these warnings and instead hide behind the only authority left that is lagging behind (SC6/Health Canada). If the School Board is going to enforce 21st Century learning then they should adhere to a 21st Century standard of safety.” says Frank.

Help us ring in the season at our “Holiday Spectacular” on December 14th. Joined by the Mississauga Youth Orchestra, we play all your favourites, from Tchaikovsky to Leroy Anderson. As always, you and your children can visit the Long & McQuade “Petting Zoo” and shop for arts and crafts created by our talented musicians. Don’t forget your sleigh bells! Join us on February 8th for “Young at Heart”, a casual concert of family favourites like Peter and the Wolf, The Blue Danube Waltz and the playful Toy Symphony, with a performance by the winner of the First Annual MSO Youth Concerto Competition.

Numerous published scientific studies suggest that mobile and wireless technologies may pose a health risk, especially to children. Studies have found that Exposure to a Wi-Fi router can increase heart rates in some people and exposure to a Wi-Fi enabled laptop can decrease human sperm motility and fragment human DNA. Electromagnetic fields from Wi-Fi transmitters have been found to have detrimental effects on attention and mental activity as well as affecting brain development in children and young people.

On March 22nd, we offer “Classical Origins” in a concert of Beethoven, Mozart and Brahms. Soloist Peter Longworth returns to our stage to perform Brahms’s passionate Piano Concerto No. 2. Our audience traditionally leaps to its feet and cheers when Mr. Longworth finishes playing!

Concerned Parents of Peel are asking that the Peel Board of Education take precautionary measures and opt for hard wiring school Internet connections with Ethernet or fiber-optic wiring instead of the potentially lethal Wi-Fi. Dr. Havas points out that hard wiring for Internet use is faster, more secure, is energy efficient and poses no health risks.

Our season ends on May 10th with the oft-requested return of The Band of the Royal Regiment of Canada. Band and orchestra will give you “The Royal Treatment” in a program by Respighi, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, and a special arrangement of Pirates of the Caribbean. Truly a season not to be missed!

Quindecennial! By Lydia Ordóñez-Niles

15 years - WOW - a huge thank you!

fall in love with. With my eye for ‘detail and decorating’ - this has been a perfect match that works. I just love it when customers say to me, “I haven’t seen this anywhere else.” At times, I have been the first retailer in Mississauga or even Canada to carry a certain product, now that is a thrill!

Impressionable Gifts and Decor started out 15 years ago mainly as a gift store and over the years has evolved into a Gift, Home Decor and Personal Shopping Boutique. The merchandise may have changed - let’s face it, styles change but what has not changed is that I strongly believe in providing three things: exceptional customer service, extraordinary and innovative products, and affordable prices. In this industry I have been told many times that a business cannot do/ be all three, something has to give. Well, I am thrilled to have proved them wrong - one CAN provide service, quality products at affordable prices, if you work hard and are passionate about what you do.

I have been fortunate enough to give back to my community (my own backyard) by volunteering my time and by donating to many causes, schools, etc. It has been very gratifying. For me, it has been very rewarding not only for my business but for me as a person. Growing up and as a business owner in Port Credit, I have met so many wonderful people and have witnessed so much growth and change – it has been an honour - so thank you. Thank you for supporting an independent business, I look forward to many more years in Port Credit.

I feel so fortunate to be able to do what I love and have a blast operating Impressionable Gifts and Decor. People ask me how I became involved in this business? I tell them it was a dream of mine and I say never, never give up on your dreams. I took the plunge and this dream of mine became a reality. I owe a lot of gratitude to my family, friends and mentor – to whom I am forever grateful for and glad to still have them in my court. Even after almost 30 years of working in the retail business (showing my age), I am still loving it, and when asked, “Do I get tired of it?”, I simply reply “No”. This past Mother’s Day was a wonderful experience for me. The children that were once in their mother’s tummy or in strollers are now old enough to come in and shop on their own. They were looking for that perfect gift for mom as mom had hinted that Impressionable Gifts & Decor was her favourite store. How rewarding that felt! It also made me realize that I too am getting older (but gracefully).

Our 15th Anniversary Celebration is on Thursday, June 20th from 6pm - 10pm so please stop by for an evening of gratitude with a chance to pick your discount, prizes, and munchies to thank you for your much appreciated business over the years. Everyone is welcome!

The reason my customers tell me that they keep coming back is because I am always carrying that unusual, innovative, and practical gift. I love challenges so for me it’s about the hunt - finding just the right thing for my customers to

Dragged kicking & screaming….not really!

Holly’s Tips

By Ric Cooper

Natural Lawn Care

Technology is changing so rapidly that I’m finding it hard to keep up. The music business is in dis-array and even a crystal ball wouldn’t help predict the future.

Watering. Water your lawn deeply enough to soak the roots. This promotes deep root growth with increases its ability to resist drought. Whether using water from your rain barrel or sprinkler, water slowly so that it penetrates the lawn rather than running off onto your driveway or sidewalk. Best to water in the morning.

While it’s true that vinyl record sales have increased dramatically, they will never take over as the dominant format. Proof of this increase is the number of phone calls I’ve had from guys wanting to sell records to make a “quick buck”. These “cowboys” have bought collections from unsuspecting individuals for pennies and want to become record dealers. When I give them a brief explanation about running a shop, they both said it sounds like too much work! If you are buying vinyl, I urge you to support a store that cares about the music, not some “get rich quick” operation.

Grasscycling. Leave grass clippings on your lawn after you mow. Any lawn mower will cut clippings short enough to grasscycle. You should only take 1/3 of the grass blade height when you mow so that the clippings will not be too long. If clumping occurs simply run over the clippings a second time or rake clumps out into a thin layer. Grass clippings are rich in nutrients that are returned to the soil about 14 days after you mow. Fertilizers. Lawns need fertilizing in order to remain healthy, lush and green. Nitrogen produces rich green growth, phosphorus stimulates root growth while potassium fortifies the plants. Your own compost, composted leaves and composted manures are good sources of natural fertilizers for your lawn. Avoid chemical fertilizers – if you do buy commercially, choose only natural source products.

Digital downloads still account for most music purchases (and rip offs!) but as I have previously mentioned, cloud streaming services is really starting to take off. Many music business insiders have been saying for years that the album format is dead. These insiders urge musicians to release singles, one per week or one per month stating that end users can only digest so much. Their attitude is that we all have A.D.D. In my opinion that is a half-truth but the other side of the coin is that most albums released today don’t possess a common thread to link the songs or styles. The Beatles used to turn out 2 full albums a year, now most bands take 5 years to release an album. It flops, I wonder why? They honestly expect us to remember their last flop? Maybe the single is the only track worth listening to and you can download it instantly to your phone. I recently got an Iphone. I have not downloaded a custom ring-tone or any songs. I mean the phone is for phone calls right? Remember when you actually talked to someone? Kicking and screaming, I’m learning to text. Facebook still confuses me somewhat. Twitterverse, look out, I’ve joined. Follow me @ricsrec. If I don’t throw the phone into the Credit River first, I’ll be putting up an album of the day link and you can view them here #recordoftheday. I will try to keep them interesting and not just your common “no-brainers”. Please support our local Port Credit businesses, come down and enjoy the village and don’t forget all of our great festivals.

Streetsville Spring Cleanup: The 2nd Annual Village Litter Blitz By: Lindsay Howe On Sunday, May 5th, over 150 volunteers joined Ward 11 Councillor George Carlson, Mississauga-Streetsville MP Brad Butt and MPP Bob Delaney in support of the 2nd Annual Village Litter Blitz. This village wide initiative works to keep Streetsville well groomed and free of litter. The mission was a huge success; the village is looking clean and revitalized!

It was a gorgeous afternoon, the sun was shining and the weather was unseasonably warm. Volunteers gathered at the Centre Plaza tent, on the field beside Tim Hortons, eager to get started on the clean up mission. The village was divided into four areas, focusing on the downtown core and surrounding residential areas. Each environmental team was designated one of the sections, concentrating on the downtown core and surrounding residential areas. For the second year in a row, Councillor Carlson hosted the Village Litter Blitz, an initiative he is passionate about. The summer weather brings large crowds to the village on a regular basis. Streetsville’s most celebrated festivals and events are just around the corner, so it was imperative to return to a state of cleanliness, and rid the village of litter and winter debris. Councillor Carlson states, “The Annual Village Litter Blitz is something we do every year before the Bread and Honey to get village in good shape before the festival comes to town. Councillor Carlson expresses his gratitude and appreciation to the 150+ volunteers who came out to lend a helping hand, filling well over 50 large garbage bags, adding up to over two tonnes of unwanted litter and recyclables. Many of the volunteers were local High School students who came out to support the cause, and gain community service hours. It was inspiring to see so many young people devoted to helping the cause. Streetsville service groups including Cadets, Rotary, Lions Club and Scouts members were in attendance to lend a helping hand. Naturally, the Streetsville BIA (Business Improvement Area) came out to support this cause, and help re-beautify the village. Free refreshments including pizza, subs, donuts and drinks were provided. Each volunteer was given a Litter Blitz t-shirt, and other freebees to acknowledge their dedication and hard work. A special thanks to all those who came out to participate and make a visible difference in our community.

Thinking of selling your home?

Seniors Health Join in for a day of team spirit, races, wheels and community fun in support of Seniors’ Health at Trillium Health Partners

Be wary of a form called an S.P.I.S, get advice from your Real Estate Agent about signing this form. A recent article in REM (Real Estate Magazine and The Toronto Star) by Bob Aaron

Coming together for a day of races, entertainment and activities on wheels, The Volunteers of Trillium Health Centre in partnership with Trillium Health Centre Foundation and Scotiabank, will host the Scotiabank Bed Race at Mississauga Celebration Square on Sunday, June 9, 2013.

In the wake of a flood of court cases involving the Seller Property Information Statement (SPIS) and its counterparts across Canada, the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA) has introduced a strange new form designed to warn sellers about signing the SPIS. Property disclosure forms consist of a complex series of questions that agents sometimes ask sellers to complete. Some agents believe – incorrectly— that the form shields them from liability for undisclosed defects in the house. Since the form first appeared in 1997, it has been the subject of about 230 court cases across Canada, and new ones are appearing at the rate of about one a month. Indeed, it is difficult to think of any other single form – except perhaps the marriage certificate – that has spawned so much litigation and has produced so much money for litigation lawyers. Rather than place the warnings about signing the SPIS form right on the form itself, the new form 225, entitled “Important Information for Sellers,” contains a caution for anyone about to sign the disclosure form. In a huge understatement, the warning form states, “care must be taken when the form is completed.”“If there is some question as to whether a particular item should be mentioned on the form,” the warning notes, “it is better to err on the side of caution and provide the information along with an explanation, e.g. a defect that has been repaired.”

More than 20 teams comprised of financial institutions, corporations and community organizations will race their custom beds through Mississauga Celebration Square, as they are cheered on by the spirit of our community. Emceed by award-winning, singer-songwriter Michael Theodore, the day will feature a barbecue picnic, while the audience enjoys live music from 80’s band, The Material Men. Additionally, the event will offer The Hasty Market Kids Zone filled with child-friendly activities; stroller derby, bed-making contest, entertainment on wheels by Circus Jonathan, as well as inflatable bouncers, face painting and many giveaways. There’s something for everyone!

In my view, erring on the side of caution would require that the form be shredded. The text continues: “With the high volume of property transactions that take place, there will inevitably be disputes between seller and buyers, whether or not an SPIS has been completed. The SPIS, when completed, may become an issue in such a dispute. “There have been cases where a court has determined the sellers completed the SPIS accurately, honestly and to the best of their ability and the evidence provided by the SPIS is favourable to the sellers. There have been other cases where a court has determined that a seller has not been forthcoming with important information on the SPIS or has provided misleading information to the buyers.” The warning form makes no mention of the frequent criticisms that have been levelled at the SPIS by the courts, here in this column and elsewhere. Filling it out completely requires technical, legal, construction, environmental, tax and accounting expertise far beyond the capacity of most individuals, and indeed, most agents. Many of its questions are ambiguous or unclear at best. Some of the questions ask about events that occurred prior to the ownership of the seller, and would be completely beyond his or her knowledge. Sellers signing the form are asked impossible technical questions about encroachments, easements, restrictive covenants, drainage restrictions, local levies and heritage designations. But the biggest zinger on the new warning form is that it fails to clearly state the law on a seller’s disclosure requirements.

With your help, they hope to raise over $100,000 for Seniors’ Health at Trillium Health Partners. Admission is FREE and donations will be accepted at the event. 100 per cent of donations raised will support programs such as the Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) and purchase much-needed equipment for the care of our senior patients. The Volunteers of Trillium Health Centre has a strong commitment to the Trillium Health Centre Foundation. In November 2010, a precedent-setting $10 million dollar pledge was made in support of Seniors’ Health as part of the Foundation’s Giving 110% campaign. This outstanding and generous commitment continues to play a key role in helping Trillium Health Partners lead the way in compassionate seniors’ care. Opening ceremonies will begin at noon at Mississauga Celebration Square located at 300 City Centre Drive. At the end of this fun-filled day, join in at the closing ceremonies, where they will recognize their overall top fundraiser, top team fundraiser, including the best decorated and fastest beds!

It says, “Whether or not the seller completes an SPIS, the law requires a seller to disclose hidden material defects to a property.” Correctly stated, the law requires a seller to disclose any hidden defect that renders the property uninhabitable or dangerous. Telling a lay person to disclose “material” defects without defining the term is both unhelpful and misleading. I can’t think of any other document in any area of law that exists solely to warn consumers about the dangers of signing a different form altogether. To me, the concept of a separate warning form is simply bizarre. It makes me wonder whether the real purpose of the form is an attempt to shield the agent from getting sued for asking the seller to sign the SPIS.

See you at the race!

In a recent blog about the SPIS, lawyer Simon Parham writes, “Buyers love them. Lawyers hate them. Sellers should be wary of them.” In its attempt to dig itself out of a hole created by a very bad disclosure form, OREA’s new warning form has only succeeded in making the hole that much deeper. So with all that stated be sure to understand what you are signing when you list your home for sale. Theresa Baird - Broker Keller Williams Realty Solutions www.tbaird.com tbaird@tbaird.com

Value For Money Investing

Value For Money Investing means we wish to allocate and use our hardearned resources in order to improve investment outcomes in a continuous and sustainable way at a fair and equitable price. In other words, achieve good investment returns AND receive fair value for the services provided. Costs do matter!

Gordon is the Vice President – Financial Planning at Efficient Wealth Management Inc., a leader in cost efficient financial planning. He has taught at local colleges in both Financial Services and Accounting areas. He is also a frequent guest on television and has written numerous articles on investing and financial planning. See our ad “the Harvest is under way!” in this issue.

Don’t Bank on it! Every time I walk into any of the big five banks, I become frustrated at the blatant untruths on the walls. I find it frustrating that we allow financial institutions to abuse the English language; to their advantage. What has me so upset? Currently, and most often, the prominent ad board in the branch is touting the institution’s “Monthly Income Fund”. The ad shouts out, that for a certain size deposit (investment), you will receive a monthly income currently set at $$$. It is the use of the word “Income” and “income” that has me riled.

We are money coaches. We created a new coaching program called The Gratifying Harvest. The program helps you enjoy your future by carefully harvesting cash flow from your lifetime of savings or preparing you to do so. The Gratifying Harvest is an advanced program that takes everything to a much higher level and is only available from Efficient Wealth Management.

Income to most of us is something we receive that makes us wealthier. Salaries, wages, earnings, interest, dividends or rent. The dictionaries and other authoritative sources agree. Webster’s Online - The financial gain (earned or unearned) accruing over a given period of time American Heritage Dictionary - The amount of money or its equivalent received during a period of time in exchange for labor or services, from the sale of goods or property, or as profit from financial investments. International Accounting Standards Board - Income is increases in economic benefits during the accounting period in the form of inflows or enhancements of assets or decreases of liabilities that result in increases in equity, other than those relating to contributions from equity participants.

This use of the English language is very powerful and persuasive. Would the same results be achieved by the banks if the poster read “Canadian Neutral Balanced Fund with a recommended withdrawal of $$$ each month for each $,000 invested. The fund is managed to seek dividend income, interest income and capital gains, as well as modest capital growth that over time may or may not exceed your monthly withdrawals”. I could at least stop being angered every time I went to the branch. Column space is not limitless, so I would like to extend an invitation to those with unanswered questions on today’s topic, to please join us at the Breakwater Restaurant, in the Waterside Inn (Stavebank south of Lakeshore) on Wednesday, June 12th, 2013 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. or evening by appointment. Invitations are very limited so please RSVP soonest to Jean at 416-410-9809 or email us at clientservices@efficientwealth.com.

Most definitions of income have a notion that you have “gained” somehow. That you will have and will have more than you had before. Therein lies the problem with these funds being called “Income”. So what are these funds? They are in fact usually classified as Canadian Neutral Balanced Funds. Most have investment objectives like “provide relatively tax efficient monthly distributions consisting of dividend income, interest income and capital gains, as well as the potential for modest capital growth...”. So how is it that they can provide a steady and level payment from investments that have dividends that are varying, capital gains that are uncertain and growth (or setbacks) that are unpredictable? The overall results within the fund are not smooth but the hope is that the total income within the fund will exceed the amounts paid out. The amount the fund is earning (its income) is varying and the amount they pay to you is steady. If the amount earned within the fund is less than what they are paying out, a part of what you are receiving each month IS YOUR OWN MONEY being sent back to you. This is called a return of capital. In other words part of the payment you are receiving could be some of your original investment being returned. If the fund is earning nothing, which happens on a cyclical basis, your whole payment could be your own money being returned to you. This is not “Income” under anyone’s definition. It is not even properly a “Distribution” which is bandied around much, since a distribution implies a payment of part of something gained and again what you receive may not be gains at all, just a return of your original deposit. Now in fairness, I support the use of a level steady payment from a group of investments with varying incomes and gains to support your needs or wants. However, we call this cashflow, not income. It is much clearer, that from a basket of investments, however they are performing, you are removing a set amount of money. You are not receiving income. You are working with cashflow. A very different thing. You also understand the exposure and the possible up and downs. Why care? Over the years, I have had many people tell me that they are looking for something safe and predictable. We discuss balanced portfolios and the possibility of long term returns from a diversified set of investments and they remain cautious due to the uncertainty associated with the ups and downs of the equity and bond markets and are looking for something more predictable. They often have selected to continue in GICs or other guaranteed investments, preferring the certainty of returns. Knowing the income they will earn is important. Later, after visiting their local bank branch and discussing their needs, they walk out with a new investment in a Monthly Income Fund. I am sure the bank and its representatives are providing full disclosure, but such disclosure cannot undo the set impression that this bank fund will return them their original investment plus the “income” amount specified “monthly”. After all, it is a set and steady monthly amount, based on a specified deposit, offered by a bank, isn’t it. When these funds are offered as an alternative to GICs at very low rates of return, they become a compelling alternative even though they are very different investments in reality.

What is not taxed in Canada?

By Linda Benne, Linda’s Craftique

April is over and we all feel that we’ve been taxed. Not only we paid our tax for 2012, but many made their first instalment for 2013 already! And those who received refunds have been over taxed throughout the year.

Materials: 3 skeins Fleece Artist Double Sea 250/100g, one pair 5mm needles Size: This is such a forgiving fit that it’s a one size pattern. You can, however, very easily make it larger or smaller when working on the back section. It’s 16” across and that will work for a large. Just measure across your shoulders and work the back section that long.

As a therapeutic exercise we thought it would be uplifting to post a list of income that is non-taxable. Gifts – anything that you receive as a simple act of kindness or love is not taxable. However, it is recommended to keep some documentation of such blissful events, as – especially in the case of larger sums of money – it may be questioned by Canada Revenue Agency. Cash is a straightforward form of giving, with no implications to the benefactor or recipient. However, if you receive a property, such as real estate or investment, there may be tax implication to the person who gifted you. Generally, any income earned on gifted property will be yours to claim, with the exception of spouses and children under 18, where income earned will be attributed back to person who made a gift. Inheritance – any distribution from the capital of the estate of the deceased person to beneficiaries is non-taxable. However, if the estate decides to pass to beneficiaries an income or gain earned by the estate, you will receive a T3 slip that would have to be included in income.

Pattern stitch Row 1&2: Knit Row 3: k1, *yfwd, k2tog* Repeat between *’s to end of row Row 4&5: Knit Row 6: as row 3 Vest is worked from side to side in one piece. With 5mm needles cast on 89 sts and work in pattern st for approx. 16” ending with a row 6 of pattern.(you should be very close to finishing your first ball of yarn at this point. I used a ball per section) Armhole opening: K22, cast off 32, knit to end of row. Next row: Knit to cast off sts, cast on 32 sts, knit to end of row. Continue in pattern st until piece measures approx. 16” from sleeve opening ending with row 6 of pattern. Repeat armhole opening. Continue in pattern st until piece measures 16” from second armhole opening ending with either a row 1 or 4. Cast off in knit.

Windfall gains – a term Canada Revenue Agency uses to describe anything that is not your ordinary income. You will not normally expect such payments or make any organized effort to receive them. One example is an occasional profit from a hobby. You do not have to report windfall gains on your income tax return. Grants, scholarships, bursaries – all these awards related to post-secondary education are non-taxable as long as you stay in school throughout the year (make sure to report your tuition, education and textbook amounts on your tax return in that year). Also, awards received for elementary or secondary school tuition are non-taxable. Child support – if you receive such payments as a result of separation, they will not be included in income. By the same token, the person who pays child support cannot deduct these payments from income. Life insurance paid to beneficiaries – such amounts are not included in income. Insurance payments as a result of accident or injury – many such payments are non-taxable, most commonly, payments resulting from car accidents or compensation received by victims of criminal act. However, disability payments or wage-loss replacement payments may be taxable to you depending on plan arrangements. Your quarterly HST credits, Ontario Trillium Benefit, and Canada Child Tax Benefits – all these amounts are not to be included in income. Note that Universal Child Care Benefit is taxable. Amounts received from Tax Free Savings Account, whether they result from interest earned, capital gain, or dividends. However, you have to watch for multiple withdrawals from TFSA during the year, as they may be subject to penalty if they exceed your combined contribution limit. Lottery winnings and profits from gambling – enjoy them all as they are fully non-taxable Eva Kupiec, CMA and Beata Kurpiewski, CGA, Principals of Professional Accounting Office at 3461 Lake Shore Blvd. W. www.beaccounting.ca
