Bluegrass brings greenbacks to Dorothy

ECA Review/submitted

The hamlet of Dorothy received a welcome boost to it’s renewal program. On Sat.Oct. 3 a near capacity crowd filled the East Coulee Community Hall with dancing and applause while enjoying an evening of Bluegrass music and roast beef dinner. In behind the scenes the dollars were building to a sizeable pile. During the musicians break, Auctioneer Derek Dekeyser took the stage to auction off donated items as well as several tasty pies. Well over $3000 went into the pot before the band again took to the stage. Once again the mandolin banjo and fiddle, along with bass and guitar of the outstanding Jay Birds brought swirling couples to the dance floor. Turn to Standing, Pg 3

When asked, during a recent telephone interview what the CCMAs meant to him, a gracious Cressman said, validation and a confidence boost. “With so much emotionally invested in something I love,” Cressman said, “it isn’t as much about the competition as it is acceptance from a community

Opinion

Victory on the back of division and fear Brenda Schimke ECA Review We’re on a very slippery slope when our only way to win the next election is to play the racist card. Giles Duceppe and Stephen Harper taste victory in Quebec by fueling the flame of prejudice against Muslim religious symbols. Polls say it’s working and the strategy will likely be successful for this election as the Liberals and the NDP so far have refused to go into the gutter for a win ‘at any cost’. The long-term consequences of such a strategy, however, are much more daunting. Harper needs to look beyond this one-time election and think about what he is actually doing to the fabric of this once great nation. Let’s remember in Quebec they are not only prejudice against Muslims, they are probably just one provincial election away from banning all religious symbols including those related to Catholics and Protestant Christians. No election victory win is worth promoting prejudice because prejudice doesn’t go away after the votes are counted. It continues to fester and only becomes bigger. France’s public policy denied Muslim children born of foreign workers citizenship and they have a huge racist problem today. The United States chose to treat their foreign workers (illegal immigrants from Mexico) as disposal slaves and today they have a huge immigration and ‘another’ major prejudice problem. Prejudice is in each and every one of us to a certain degree, but when politicians and governments promote and use prejudice to keep or gain power, this strategy eventually erodes the most powerful nations in the world. This week a pregnant woman was roughed up and pushed down in Quebec and sent to hospital with injuries because she had a scarf (hijab) on her head--not a niqab (full face veil). A clear example of how flaming the fire of racism leads to unintended consequences. That’s just how things got started in Germany during the early 1930s and we know how badly that ended. We have religious sects in Alberta today where women dress

modestly and wear scarves. Given the current trend to dress teens and pre-teens in soft porn styles, it may behoove us to learn something from cultures of modesty rather than fear them. It is just over 50 years since most women stopped covering their heads in churches across Canada. But still today in all Catholic and the lion share of evangelical Christian churches, women cannot be the priest or lead pastor, elders or serve communion. All great religions including Hindu, Christian and Muslim are patriarchal (male ruler) and from the beginning of time every religion has had a minority that plucks a juicy “power verse” and uses it to their personal advantage rather than in the context of the entire teachings of the religious text. As a Muslim, Calgary’s mayor, Naheed Neshi, has said the majority of Muslims do not believe in the niqab, but he also warns of the dangers of government-sanctioned racism. Religious freedom, however offensive we personally may find it, is a fundamental charter right that we want to keep. It’s a little rich for Harper to be talking about how a small fundamental sect of Muslims treat their women when juxtapositioned against his government’s dismissive or lack of policies to help murdered and AUTO BODY REPAIR LTD. missing aborigQuality Collision Repair and Professional Service… inal girls, single Guaranteed! mothers, pregFind out more about us at: nant teens, www.brennanautobody.com homeless Phone: 403-742-3555 women, gays, 4109 - 48 Avenue, Stettler widows, Muslims, and working mothers, or the attitude towards women that has prevailed in his church of choice Mon.-Fri.: 8 am - 6 pm Sat.: 9 am - 5 pm for centuries, Sun.: Noon - 4 pm and still exists East Central Alberta’s in many ways Largest today.

Disengaged people? Dear Editor, In just two short weeks we will be casting our votes for our next government. The trouble is why are people choosing to be disengaged? In the past Alberta election only 53.7 per cent of people chose to vote and although that’s higher than the past election, the numbers are alarmingly small. Why is this? These numbers are so low especially in my generation - the Millennials, which report at as low as 35.7 per cent according to Stats Canada. At my workplace, our local farm dealership, around our shop’s coffee table two out of the 12 of us openly admit that they did not vote in this past election. It is not as though they do not have an opinion, in fact they have openly

made their opinions known. The reason that they did not vote is that one felt they could not spare the time to go to a polling station and the other simply did not care. Is this a continuing trend or will it improve with age? Stats Canada shows 68 per cent of people vote. Why are we not doing better? This is our future and for the future of generations to come, that our governments are choosing to make for us. My wish for the public is not that they become involved in politics, I am asking that the public be mindful of what the promises that are being made are as well as the party mandates in the federal election campaign and then that they choose to vote on Oct. 19. Fire Prevention October 4 to 10, 2015

Week

HEAR THE BEEP - WHERE YOU SLEEP

Save a life

Special Areas Fire Chief press release As we enter into the longest running public safety campaign in North America, ”Fire Prevention Week” let’s take a look back to its origin and significant of events during that time. Fire Prevention week was established in response to a number of devastating fires that occurred during the week of Oct. 9, 1871. Most notably, the Great Chicago Fire and its apparent origin on the farm of Mrs. O’Leary and her milk cow. It was rumoured that Mrs. O’Leary’s milk cow kicked over a lantern which started the barn on fire and spread into what became the Great Chicago fire. Now over the years, (or luck of the Irish) this origin has been debunked but the impact and impression it and others in Michigan and Wisconsin had during that week forever changed how we view fire and what we can do to mitigate these risks to our communities. As a result, fire officials at that time felt compelled to commemorate the week of Oct. 9 in honour of those whose experienced the horrific event, were displaced or victimized, as well as those who unselfishly risked their lives to help others. In 1922, then President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed Oct. 9 as Fire Prevention Day. Following in 1925, Calvin Coolidge further signed a proclamation to observe the entire week of Oct. 9 of each year as Fire Prevention Week. For us canucks, Canada’s Governor General proclaimed Fire Prevention week in 1923 and each year a theme is chosen to to make the public aware of what we can do to make our homes safer so as to advert such catastrophic events from occurring. This year’s theme is ‘Hear the “beep” where you sleep - every bed-

room needs a working smoke alarm.’ The reason for focusing on our homes is because statistics show that half of all fire deaths that occur in the home happen between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. and for most of us, that is when we are asleep. We may have as little as three minutes to safely escape our home therefore having a working smoke detector in each bedroom, in addition to ones on each level, this may give the precious advanced warning needed to get to safety.

The reason for focusing on our homes is because statistics show that half of all fire deaths that occur in the home happen between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Make sure smoke detectors are hard-wired in and interconnected so that when one sounds, they all sound. There are smoke detectors that can be purchased that are interconnected but wirelessly communicate for older homes where they may not be hard wired in. There are smoke detectors that vibrate the bed to alert children, others that talk, and some that parents can record a message for the children when it sounds. Additionally, others have CO detectors integrated in. For the hearing impaired, one option is a strobing light that activates, so check out your options. Whichever one you chose, be sure to have one for each level of your home and one for each sleeping room and

always maintain and test them regularly as per manufacturer directions. In addition, practice your escape plan including where you will be meeting before an emergency alarm sounds. So when should we start to do this? NOW. Check operation, replace batteries annually or as per manufacturer recommendation, test alarms monthly and be sure to install carbon monoxide detectors in your homes.

Quick facts Sat. - Sun. 11 - 9 Some quick facts: eight people a week die in fires in Canada and there are 200 CO deaths a year, 73 per cent of fire deaths were residential fires, 25 per cent of home fires started in the bedroom, three out of five of home fire deaths happen in homes with no alarms or ones not working. Fire Prevention Week Message from the Acting Fire Commissioner

Whenever we hear that firetruck siren, we panic for a moment, hoping our fellow Albertans are safe. It’s a sound we’d rather not hear. The sound of a smoke alarm, on the other hand, is one we can live with. Research shows us that a properly installed and working smoke alarm can cut the chances of dying in a fire in half. Yet we know that too many homes in Alberta do not have this lifesaving device - and in too many homes they have been disabled. Research on home fires show that in as little as three minutes, a fire can become deadly to the occupants due to toxic smoke from burning synthetic

materials present in drapes, carpeting and furniture. A well-trained and well-equipped urban fire service will reach a burning home in seven minutes or more after a call is received. This is too late to save occupants who may already be overcome by toxic smoke. All Albertans need to prevent fires in our homes and ensure safe evacuation. A key part of this evacuation process is early detection of a fire by a smoke alarm. Fire Prevention Week reminds all Albertans about the tragedies and loss fires can cause. More importantly, it reminds Albertans about the ways they can prevent fires and protect

themselves and their families. True or False?

Think you know all there is to know about smoke alarms? Challenge yourself by taking this quiz! True or False 1. I should replace my smoke alarm every 10 years. 2. A smoke alarm connected to household current is better than a battery-operated smoke alarm. 3. Ionization smoke alarms are better than photo-electric smoke alarms. 4. I will smell the smoke, so I don’t need a smoke alarm. 5. Most people who die in fires are burned. 6. I should test my smoke alarms annually. 7. My smoke alarm goes off every time I make toast. Leslie Davis and Dean Forrester. ANSWERS: 1. I should replace my smoke alarm every 10 years. True. Like all electronic equipment, smoke alarms have a defined life span. Smoke alarms generally have a life span between seven and 10 years, depending on the specific manufacturer and model. To best determine how to care for your smoke alarm, read the manufacturer’s instructions that came with your smoke alarm. Throughout the life of your alarm, test it every month to ensure it is functioning properly. 2. A smoke alarm connected to household current is better than a battery-operated smoke alarm. False. Both types of smoke alarms in Canada must be tested to the same Bindloss Fire Department, from the left, Fire Chief Cresten Andersen, Deputy Fire Chief Paul standard and listed by an accredited Monro, Ivan Schlaht, Derek Barnes and Clarence Crocker. testing organization such as Underwriters Laboratories of Canada, therefore both types are equally effective. Fire Prevention Week Test your smoke alarm knowledge Cont’d from Pg 8 battery-operated smoke alarms at least once per year. 3. Ionization smoke alarms are better than photoelectric smoke alarms. False. Both types of smoke alarms are tested and listed by an accredited testing organization such as Underwriters Laboratories of Canada as life safety devices to the same standard - CAN/ULC-M531 Standard for Smoke Alarms, and are equally effective. 4. I will smell the smoke, so I don’t need a smoke alarm. False. One side effect of fires is the generation of carbon monoxide in smoke. Carbon monoxide will aid in the deepening of sleep and will affect the ability of your senses to function properly. Each house should have smoke alarms on every level, outside all sleeping areas and in each bedroom. 5. Most people who die in fires have suffered serious burns. False. Most people who die from home fires die from breathing the smoke and toxic gases from the fire - not from being burned by flames. These poisonous gases, including carbon monoxide, can render a person confused and disoriented or even unconscious after only a few breaths. These toxic effects may overcome you long before you have time to orient yourself to get out of your own home. If you are asleep and breathe poisonous gases, you may not wake up in time to escape. Smoke alarms are your best chance of being alerted to a house fire early enough to escape. 6. I should test my smoke alarms monthly. True. You should test your smoke alarms monthly. This is the only way to make sure that they are in working condition. Only working smoke alarms can protect your family from fire. If you have battery-operated alarms, replace batteries according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Usually the battery will last approximately one year before needing replacement. 7. My smoke alarm goes off every time I make toast. I should disable it so it won’t give nuisance alarms. False. You need smoke alarms on every floor of your home, outside all sleeping areas and in each bedroom. If your smoke

alarms give nuisance alarms, try the following: • relocate the existing smoke alarm a short distance away; • gently vacuum the outside of the unit, following manufacturer’s directions; • clean your toaster regularly to remove crumbs which can produce smoke when the heat is on; or

• replace the smoke alarm with a new one. You can purchase one with a “hush” feature. You could also replace an ionization smoke alarm in the kitchen with a photoelectric type. 8. My family and I have about three minutes to get out of the house after the smoke alarm goes off. True. Studies have shown that you generally have about three minutes to escape from your home in the event of a fire. This is why it is so important to establish an escape plan for everyone in the family and to practice home fire drills.

Fire Prevention Week Keep your cool when the alarm sounds Imagine waking up to hear your smoke alarm beeping. You are groggy, confused and scared. This is a time when many people panic and end up making serious - sometimes fatal - mistakes. In fact, according to research from the Office of the Fire Commissioner, how a person reacts in a fire can be the difference between life and death. Approximately 20 per cent of people who died in a home fire in a ten-year period in Alberta did not act when the smoke alarm activated. Make sure that everyone in your

home knows exactly what to do when the alarm sounds or there is smoke or fire. A good escape plan that your family has practiced will help all to deal with a scary situation in a calm and safe manner. • Get out quickly if there is a fire because fire moves extremely fast. You may have only three minutes or less before the toxic smoke overtakes you (visit www.3minutedrill.alberta. ca) • Teach children to never hide in closets or under beds. • Choose two ways out of every room.

Sleeping like a baby Nighttime fire drills critical for heavy sleepers and children Is someone in your family a heavy sleeper? Whether it’s a child or an adult, people who are heavy sleepers need extra measures if there is a fire in your home. Heavy sleepers may not wake up when a smoke alarm sounds or their judgment may be impaired when they do wake up. Current research suggests that children may have different sleep patterns than adults which may prevent them from hearing and reacting appropriately to alarms. It appears that children, especially those younger than 15 years, have a deep-sleep phase in the first few hours after they fall asleep, which may prevent them from hearing and reacting appropriately to smoke alarms. “Children’s sleep patterns do not mean that smoke alarms are useless,” warns Acting Fire Commissioner Spence Sample. “It means that, in addition to having smoke alarms, we must have excellent fire escape plans which take that into account.” Smoke alarms save lives by providing an early warning of smoke and fire danger. However, you won’t know how your children or household members will react to the sound of a smoke alarm until you’ve tested their response. When you have only moments to get out safely, a fire is not the time to discover these obstacles. Sample suggests all families practice a home fire drill at least twice a year, including during the night, so you can identify these issues and plan for them in your fire escape plan.

For children and other family members who sleep through alarms, appoint an adult or babysitter to be responsible for them in advance. Practice escape drills so your children know how the alarm sounds and what it means. By practicing your escape plan, you will find out if any obstacles exist to your family escaping safely and you will have the opportunity to come up with a plan to deal with those problems. Children are not the only ones at risk of sleeping through an alarm. The elderly, people who are sleepdeprived such as students, shift workers, teenagers, the hearing impaired and anyone taking sedating medication or alcohol or drugs may be affected. Routine home fire drills will help you determine who may not hear the smoke alarm. It is frightening to realize your child or a household member may sleep through a smoke alarm. However, by planning and practicing a fire escape plan at night, you can identify potential problems and solve them. To find out how to practice a fire drill at home, please visit: www.ofc. alberta.ca

If heat or smoke blocks the usual fire exit (door), then use the second way out (another door or a window). Test doors before opening them: • Feel the door and look for smoke coming in around the edges. • If the door is not hot and there is no smoke coming in, open it slowly, but be prepared to slam it shut if heat or smoke rush in. • If the door is hot, use your other exit. If you must escape through smoke, get low and go under the smoke to the nearest exit. Smoke will rise to the ceiling, leaving cooler, cleaner air close to the floor. Parents should take into account the limitations of young children, the elderly or disabled when planning a fire escape. If you live in an apartment building

and the smoke alarm goes off, only use the stairs. Never use an elevator. • Choose a family meeting spot, a safe distance away from the home. It can be as simple as meeting under a neighbour’s tree. • Practice, practice, practice. If your family has rehearsed various emergencies regularly, you will all know exactly what to do if the real thing occurs. When you are making your escape plan, do not assume young children will be woken by a smoke alarm. According to recent research, children younger than 9 years old experience the deepest sleep of all groups studied. If you have young children at home, it is best to practice your home fire escape drill during sleeping hours. It is an adult’s responsibility to awaken young children during a fire emergency and get them out safely.

Smoke alarms for people who are deaf or hard of hearing Smoke alarms save lives. However, people who are deaf or hard of hearing may not be able to depend on the traditional smoke alarm to alert them to a fire. Smoke alarms and alert devices, called accessories, are available for people who are deaf and hard of hearing. There are a few types of accessories you may consider depending on your needs. Strobe lights throughout the home are activated by smoke detectors and alert people who are deaf to fire conditions. When people who are deaf are

asleep, a high intensity strobe light is required along with a pillow or bed shaker to wake them up and alert them to fire conditions so they can escape. These accessories produce a loud, mixed low pitch sound. They are activated by the sound of the smoke alarm and are usually installed next to the bed. Recent research has shown that a loud, mixed low pitch sound is more effective in waking people of all ages than the loud high pitch sound of a traditional smoke alarm. As people age, their ability to hear high pitch sounds decreases.

Smoke alarms with built-in or separate strobe lights can be purchased through home improvement store websites or by searching the internet for “strobe light smoke alarms.” BRK/First Alert, Gentex and Kidde are brands of this type of smoke alarm. Smoke alarm accessories such as bed or pillow shakers, transmitters and receivers are available through www.lifetone.com and www.safeawake.com. Make sure any smoke alarm or accessory device you use has the label of a recognized testing laboratory.

TPP good for grain sector

The Western Grain Elevator Association (WGEA) commended the Government of Canada Oct. 6, 2015 on concluding the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations. “The countries represented by the TPP agreement have high population levels and continued strong economic growth. They are key markets for western Canadian grains and oilseeds,” said Wade Sobkowich, Executive Director of the WGEA. “While the U.S. and Asia are already major destinations for agricultural products, strengthening our trade relationship there and in the Pacific will further increase market access,

clearly benefiting farmers, the grain sector, and the broader economy in western Canada.” “Diversifying markets and expanding market access in key areas of growth around the world will pay long-term and great dividends for our agriculture exports and the economy in Canada,” continued Sobkowich. “The western grain sector fully supports the Canada’s historic agreement with the TPP - this is positive news for the grain sector.” Members of the TPP include: Japan, Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Mexico, Singapore, the United States, and Vietnam.

Station, NS and his grandsons Lincoln (7), William (4) and Levi (1) are comforted in the memory of his full and vibrant life. Gus was born in Hanna in 1942 and raised four miles west of his home of the last 50+ years. He stewarded and maintained a love of the land his father, Daniel came to in 1923. He attended school in Scapa and proceeded to obtain his Diesel Mechanics certification from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). In 1968, Gus met his wife June and they were married on Nov. 14, 1969. Gus had great love and commitment to family - both immediate, extended and grafted. various sports and school obligations, and supporting them through universities on both coasts, Gus loved the many foster children who called the farm their home for days, weeks, months or years. The foster children were treated to the same love, responsibilities and expectations of Gus’s own children; Gus’s life was enriched by their presence in his life and they remained close to his heart and thoughts even as they moved on from the farm. An agricultural innovator, Gus was

an AI technician and applied his skills to build a purebred Charolais herd from a Hereford based herd, always holding productivity over pedigree. Similarly, he was an avid supporter of crop rotation; stewardship of the land was one of Gus’s true passions. Gus was a member of many community organizations including 4-H, the Drumheller Health Board, and he even endured a stint in politics, running for the Social Credit party in 1993.
