A new business with a focus on educational support and treatment for troubled teens, has opened its doors to clients in Delburne. Executive Director Ed Rifo and Director of Operations, Teresa Hay of Venture Academy,

attended Delburne’s Sept. 21 council meeting to address concerns expressed by some business owners about the school locating in Delburne. Business owner, Tim Tufford requested to appear before council to voice his concerns about the school, fearing that Venture students may pose a risk to Delburne.

Tufford and other business owners who attended the meeting were worried that crime rates may rise if at risk teens were living in the community. Hay reassured the owners that the kids attending the school are not high risk youth but rather teens experiencing more moderate difficulties with school or home.

They kept control of the game and held on to the end! “Another week of Cougar football in the books,” said Head Coach Mark Neitz. “We didn’t come away with a win against Lacombe but we’re still proud of the boys and their effort put forth. Losses aren’t the end of the world, we get to evaluate and grow from them. “There was plenty of adversity going into the game against Lacombe. “Injuries hampered our line up, but substitutions came in and performed admirably. “We feel for those injured and hope a speedy recovery is in order. “We need to focus this week as we are coming up against another very tough team in the league in Hunting Hills. “It will be a tough game, but if we come ready to work this week I believe

we can perform well by game day,” concluded Neitz.

Traffic controls shelved in Big Valley Debra Johnston

Review Reporter

Big Valley council put the kibosh on installing traffic controls at the intersection of Railway Ave. and Main St. at the Sept. 24 council meeting. After hearing public feedback and investigating costs for sidewalks or stop signs, council opted to leave the issue alone. Council has been investigating how to direct the flow of pedestrians arriving from the train across Railway Ave. without causing too much disruption to traffic going through town or parking by the railway station. “I don’t think the crosswalks for the money are going to do anything,” stated Mayor Lois Miller. Coun. Sandra Schell agreed with Miller, stating that pedestrians would likely continue to cross anywhere on Railway Ave.

sump pumps, consequently, the settling ponds are rising too fast. According to Big Valley’s Bylaw 801 – water and sewer, sump pump hoses must not be connected to the septic system, but instead must drain outside. The water then follows surface drainage patterns. According to CAO, Michelle White, council will encourage people to abide by the bylaw with an extensive educational plan first but will consider fines if households continue to connect sump pumps to the sewer system. Fines are set at $100 for the first infraction, $250 for the second and $500 for the third.

Council approved Parkland Regional Library’s 2016 budget, which sets a two per cent increase for 2016. The 2016 fees for membership will be $2907.00 from the 2015 $2850.00. Parkland provides a number of services to its member libraries including interlibrary loans, e-services, equipment loans and so on.

Wanting change Dear Editor, I was wondering if you would reprint this letter that had been written by Bill McCallum and published in the Winnipeg Sun in your letters to the editor column of the ECA Review. Irene Wadstein, Coronation A look at the recent changes in the USA shows what ‘undefined’ change can look like. The Conservative government got us through the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression Canadians say they want change. The government reduced the GST by two percentage points, a 30 per cent reduction on a tax that we pay on everything - Canadians say they want change. The government introduced pension splitting for retirees (this benefits my wife and me and most of my retired friends, and we are

not rich) - Canadians say they want change. The government instituted tax free savings accounts, which benefit anyone willing to save Canadians say they want change. The government has negotiated a number of international trade deals which will stand us in good stead in years to come Canadians say they want change. The government stands four square in favour of Israel, a country threatened with extinction by a vastly larger contingent in the area, and the only democracy in the Middle East - Canadians say they want change. My question to those Canadians who want change is which of the foregoing would you like to change, why, and what would you replace them with?

Lil Glasiar, Rocky, Ab., adds her touch to one of the squares for the community painting. Every person in attendance at the Royal Harvest Festival in Coronation was encouraged to paint their own square grid. The finished painting will be a collection of all the squares each person painted over the weekend. Audrey Glasier was inspired by the idea during a Vitalize Conference in Edmonton and decided to make it a part of the festival. The completed piece will represent diversity, helping hands, children and animals, “all the things we love”, said Glasier. ECA Review/D.Clark

Open letter to federal candidates Dear Editor, This is an open letter to our local federal candidates. We are told to vote, vote, vote. With just 22 days left in this election how can we do this when we do not know who our local candidates are or what they stand for? They do not come out to our small towns and rural communities and tell us. Why do our towns and county not put on town hall meetings and let all the

people know when they are so we can make an informed vote. All we hear about is Harper, Mulcair and Trudeau. I thought Canada was a democracy. If all we hear is from these three people why do we even have local candidates. We might just as well have everyone vote for these three people. Alan Thomas Castor, Ab.

Letter to Chair of Friends of Dorothy, I saw the article in the [ECA] Review about your efforts to save and restore history. My husband (late) was born in Wayne on Oct. 3, 1929 to Danish immigrants who settled there briefly before buying a homestead north of Wainwright, near the Battle River. Over the years we visited in the area, first with our children, and later took the grandkids to see the dinosaurs and stopped along the way at Wayne saloon, the bridges, etc. I wish you much success in your endeavours. It is important to keep and

restore history. [Enclosed was a cheque for $500 to assist in the restoration project.] Joyce Rasmussen Wainwright, Ab.

Whether you’re connecting to world markets or a world of entertainment, better rural Internet service demands fast, reliable access to more data. CCI Wireless, an Alberta owned company, knows rural best. This ‘scarecrow of hearts’ was one of the entries in the eighth annual Wainwright scarecrow festival held Sat., Sept. 26 in and around the Wainwright library. This year’s theme was Alice in Wonderland. The event included a live scarecrow parade, children’s activities, a pie baking and eating contest, an outdoor market and a book sale. ECA Review/submitted

• Sean Zak on golf. com, reminiscing about David Feherty’s best one-liners during TV golf coverage: “On an errant shot: ‘That ball is so far left Lassie couldn’t find it even if it was wrapped in bacon.’; On Jim Furyk’s swing: ‘It looks like a one-armed man trying to wrestle a snake in a phone booth.’ ”

Farmer Sheds 40 pounds in 3 months!

I’ve reached my first goal

Before hypnosis I was not happy with the weight I gained after a back injury. I used snacks of pop and chips to keep myself awake during farming. Now I keep myself awake with fruit and vegetables. I also drink water and low calorie vitamin water to keep me awake. I eat lighter meals for breakfast and lunch and have salad and a meat for supper. I still enjoy the odd meal out with all the fixings, but it’s easy to enjoy small portions at home. As I get closer

eldest of seven children. She was raised on a farm/coal mine 15 miles south of Hanna and she received her education at Parr School. When Jessie was 16, her mother passed away and her and Louise took over looking after their siblings. Jessie was their guardian angel. On May 10, 1946 Jessie married the love of her life, Robert Rowden. Once married, they moved to the Rowden Summerville farm where they welcomed son, Larry and daughter, Terry. In 1954, they moved to the Rowden farm to make it easier for Larry and Terry to attend school. Jessie and Robert enjoyed 52 years of marriage before his passing in 1998. While on the farm, Jessie was very busy milking cows, tending a large garden and working as Robert’s secondhand man. She was active in her community, being involved with many groups such as the Golden Hills ladies club, Bullpound community club, and curling club. Jessie also took a special interest in 4-H beef. In the summer the house was always full. Their nephews and nieces loved nothing better than to be at the farm with Aunt Jessie and Uncle Robert. Their farm was a magnet to a lot of their friend’s children as well. In 1982, Jessie and Robert moved to Hanna. Shortly after their move to town, she became employed at East Central Gas Co-op while Robert still farmed from town. Jessie kept very busy in town with volunteer work as well as her job. The Hanna Hospital Auxiliary was most endearing and for 25 plus years she worked tirelessly on this committee. She also was involved with the Hanna rodeo committee, ladies and seniors curling and held many posts in the Order of the Royal Purple. For many years she was the manager, score keeper and head cheerleader for the Hanna senior slopitch team. Jessie and Robert also coached the junior and ladies fastball teams out of Bullpound, Ab. In between all her volunteering, Jessie loved spending time with her grandchildren, quite often taking them camping and fishing. Jessie and Robert loved travelling. Going across Canada and into the States with Dick and Betty Gall, to Alaska with Ron and Ruby Havell and many camping trips with the ball team were just a few highlights. After Robert’s passing, Jessie continued to travel to places like Mexico, Jamaica, a couple cruises, house boating at the Shuswap with most of the family for her 75th birthday (of which she felt she should go down the slide just because everyone else was), as well as many bus trips with Terry or friends. Jessie was predeceased by her husband Robert, her daughter Terry Elliott, her parents Tom and Nellie Stubbs; siblings, Louise Milligan, Ruby Polych, Jack Stubbs, Richard Stubbs, Doug Stubbs and Russell Stubbs. She is survived by her son, Larry (Joanne), grandchildren; Turn to Numerous, Pg 16
