A wild and colourful group were present at Spondin’s annual Halloween pot luck and costume judging on October 26, 2013.

First on the agenda at the Coronation Town Council organizational meeting on Monday, October 28 was the oath of office, whereby Commissioner of Oaths Debbie Taylor officially swore in all members of council. Each Council member repeated the oath and signed.

Mayor and Deputy Mayor elect Nominated for position of Mayor were Mark Stannard, Jackie Brigley and Keith Griffiths with Mark Stannard ultimately determined to be mayor after the anonymous vote tally. Jackie Brigley and Keith Griffiths were subsequently nominated for Deputy Mayor, with Jackie Brigley winning the vote.

Code of Conduct All Council members were required to affirm the Town of

Each member read aloud this statement as verbal commitment to the Code: By signing this Code of Conduct, I state that I have read and fully understand the contents of the Code of Conduct. My signature is my contractual agreement that I will follow and abide by the Code of Conduct in good faith.

The AHS External Relations Unit noted the Request for Decision document - was originated to provide a contact point between the AHS and municipalities, as well as other stakeholders in the health care system. CAO Kulyk referenced the issues of Consort attempting to get active care back in their hospital and noted that this new initiative “proactively addressed” this. “It’s a good move for the AHS to make,” she said. The item was accepted as information.

UFA Awards “5 Million Pennies” to Hussar, AB The Village of Hussar, Alberta has been named the first $50,000 prize winner in the inaugural UFA Rural from the Roots Up – Get ‘n’ Give contest. Hussar will be awarded $50K from UFA (#50KfromUFA) to upgrade their community hall. In an exceptional video, the town sang of their need for “5 Million Pennies” to renovate their aging hall, providing creative examples of how the money would be spent. The video can be viewed here: http://bit.ly/1a3EbCY. “We are overwhelmed by all of the entries,” said Bob Nelson, President and CEO of UFA Co-operative Limited. “There are many deserving and heartfelt stories of what rural communities would do with $50,000 dollars, but Hussar just went that extra mile. I think every person in that whole village was singing in the video!” The Hussar entry was one of 232 applications received for funding to date. In total,

UFA will be awarding five $50,000 prizes to projects which support and enrich rural communities. “Our community hall is the cornerstone of our community. It is necessary to maintain this gathering place as a way to knit the past, present and future of our community together, to keep us connected and remind us where we come from. This money will help us achieve our goals and be a lasting legacy for UFA in keeping rural Alberta strong,” said Wendy Kaiser, Hussar & District Hall Maintenance Society. In addition to naming the first $50,000 dollar winner, UFA is proud to announce five semi-finalists. “We now move into the ‘give’ part of the Get ‘n’ Give contest,” continued Nelson. “UFA chose the first winner and soon the Village of Hussar will choose the next $50,000 winner from the five semi-finalists. It’s a pay-it-forward

style contest, which is exactly what the cooperative spirit is all about.” In alphabetical order, the five communities in the running for the second $50,000 UFA Get ‘n’ Give Contest prize are:Byemoor, Alberta – Sullivan Lake West Agriculture Society, Clive, Alberta – Neighbourhood Revitalization Group, Foremost, Alberta – Foremost Minor Hockey, Seniors and Legacy Bridge Committee, Hand Hills, Alberta – Hand Hills Lake Community Club and Springdale, Alberta – Liberty Hall Society. Applications will continue to be accepted for the remaining $50,000 prizes. Creativity is important, so make a video, use a photo collage, sing a song or write a compelling story that details how $50,000 would benefit your project. Rural community groups who are located within 200km of a UFA Farm & Ranch Supply store or Petroleum agency are welcome to enter.

Over 500 people at Czar Quilting Guild show by Debbie Prediger The Czar Quilting Guild had 285 quilts on display at their 12th Annual Show in Czar, Alberta on October 25 - 26, with over 500 people attending. The guild has members from numerous towns including Czar, Wainwright, Hardisty, Provost, Brownfield, Lougheed, Hughenden, Amisk, Alliance, Lacombe, Paradise Valley, Coronation, Sedgewick and Martenville, Saskatchewan. The Czar Quilting Guild is known for it’s beautiful displays and many talents. This is a very creative group. People travel from all over Alberta each year to see their amazing work. Their first show was in 2001. The quilts are known for their intricate detail. Antique doors, old barn wood, a pair of old skates, an old bike, an antique bed and the list goes on. Something different is noticed each time you make a round in the hall, where the quilts are displayed like art pieces.

Putting pet peeves to paper by Herman Schwenk, Coronation The combining is completed, my garden is all cleaned up and most of the tools put away for the winter. I started farming 61 years ago and this was one of the best crops that I have been involved in harvesting. In fact this is the fourth year that this area has had above average crops except where there was damage from hail storms. Anyway, I now have time to put some of my pet peeves to paper. If you have been watching the news recently you are aware that there was a violent confrontation near Moncton, New Brunswick. The demonstrators had set up a road block about three weeks ago to stop a resource company from drilling exploratory wells into a shale deposit Schwenk to determine if natural gas could be produced by a fracking process. This exploration was to take place near but not on an Indian reservation. The protesters were supposedly from the reservation. The exploration company was able to get a court injunction to have the road block removed. The RCMP were finally dispatched to remove the road block when the protesters would not comply with the court order. The result was a violent confrontation with the protesters and the RCMP. Forty of the protesters were arrested by the police. It is not clear to me if this protest was motivated by the Native Canadians or professional protesters. The police discovered that they had a large arsenal of assault rifles and explosives. If the protest was motivated by the Indian band I believe they brought in professionals to provide muscle. Like so many other issues with Native Canadians the policies, in my opinion, are racist. This entire process was illegal and needs to be severely dealt with by our justice system. Well, don’t hold your breath. Any other Canadian charged with the same offences would be locked up and the key thrown away. For whatever reason, the

environmental movement is objecting to fracking. They claim that it puts water wells at risk. In my opinion there is absolutely no scientific evidence to support their claims. This takes place hundreds of feet below water well aquifers. Fracking has been going on since the late 1940’s and no one has any evidence that the process does damage to water wells. The critique is a red herring. In my opinion, this is the CO2 lobby objecting to the extraction of any kind of petroleum product. Al Gore has just started another campaign to have governments implement a carbon tax. It is another example of left wing thinkers that do not understand or care how taxes of this nature kill jobs. As long as the aboriginal community insist on opposing various forms of economic development such as hydro carbon extraction or pipe lines that would provide employment for their people, they will continue to be second class citizens in this country. Native Canadians need to work with governments and the rest of our society to bring about positive economic development rather then just oppose everything and demand a larger government handout. The Federal Government and especially the Department of Aboriginal Affairs has to accept responsibility for much of this mess. A significant number of chiefs and their band councils are paying themselves large salaries while their people live in poverty. This is government money that is provided to the bands for schooling, housing and general infrastructure. Any other organization in this country has to account for every dollar that they receive from government, why is money allocated to Indian bands not subject to the same rules? As long as money provided to the Indian bands is not accountable, these people will live in poverty as fraudulent Indian bands will confiscate and waste it for their personal use. If Indian bands were required to provide a budget before receiving money and then file a detailed account of how the money was spent, there would be far fewer of the aboriginal community living in poverty.

WHERE’S THE MONEY?

Cheerful and fun-loving described Bertha well Bertha Buehler was born to John and Bertha (Fischer) Buehler on May 23, 1917 at Leader, Saskatchewan. She had an older brother, Arthur. Her mother died when she was two days old. Her maternal grandmother looked after her until her father married her mother’s sister, Alvina. Bertha was the oldest daughter in a large family and was Buehler needed to help much in the home but she was always cheerful and loved her brothers and sisters. The family moved to the Veteran area where she attended Jewett school. After leaving school she took various jobs in the community, one as a maid in the Royal Crown Hotel in Coronation. Bertha married Verne Butler on March 25, 1946. Their home was the farm where Verne was born and raised in the Hemaruka area. There they spent over 52 years together working hard but leading a quiet, happy life. Two daughters were born to them, Jeanette and Donna. Both girls were born in the winter when there was much snow, it was very cold and roads were impassable. Bertha had to move to Consort to await both births, a time of separation and loneliness for the young couple. After the girls grew up and left home, Verne and Bertha enjoyed discing and other community events and did short road trips to shop and go out for dinner. Grandchildren came along. Bertha’s greatest enjoyment was surprising them with Christmas and birthday presents. Bertha also did embroidery and knitting in her quiet times and made some pretty things. Company was always welcome at the Butler’s and they for sure never left hungry. There was always savory roast beef, mashed potatoes and all the cake and coffee you might want! Cheerful and fun-loving described Bertha well. Her sunny disposition attracted many friends when she had to move into the Assisted Living in Coronation after her dear Verne passed away. There she met another lonely person, a gentleman, Ben Heistad. They were married right there in the Complex and shared family and friends for several happy years. Courageous and kind also describe her as she lived out her final years just loving her family, her friends and all who cared for her in the Assisted Living and Long Term Care Centre. She went peacefully to her Heavenly home after a long meaningful life. Bertha is survived by her daughters Jeanette (Nils) Berg and their children; Lyle (Barbie Evans) Berg Grant (Charla) Berg Bradley (Janice) Berg, Owen (Jennifer) Berg and their children Anna, Cate and Eva. Donna (Harold) Kelm and their children; Rhonda (Wes Charles) Kelm Kevin (Corey Opsahl) Kelm and their children Brandt and Cassidy Kelm. Also sisters and brothers; Gladys (Vic) Fulton and Irene (Albert) Graham, Henry (Marge) Buehler and Norman (Eileen)

If the recycled PET is going to be made into fabric the pellets will be melted down and pushed through an extruder once again - but this time the strands will be stretched into a very fine, soft thread (fibre). This thread then can be woven into versatile fabrics that you’d never guess were made from recycled plastic bottles. The demand for recycled plastics continues to grow, which makes collecting these bottles more and more important.

HEISLER

People have responded - 95 per cent of Canadians can recycle their plastic bottles and recycle 150 million kilograms of plastic each year from bottles alone. Everyone can play a part by replacing bottle caps after use, recycling at home, hanging on to empty bottles until there’s a recycling bin handy and encouraging friends to do the same.

ALLIANCE

Sausage supper and sausage train by Diane Damnman Dave and Marilyn Barreau of Naniamo are here visiting with Doug and Judi Solonick. Judi just got back from visiting with them in Naniamo. We took the afternoon train ride, now known as the Sausage Train, to Heisler on Sunday October 27 for the sausage supper. Margaret Miller of Edmonton played some beautiful accordion tunes. The sharing of reminisces of other train rides, the gentle ride of the car, the party atmosphere and the sausage supper made for a super day. I did some visiting at the sausage supper. Red and Shirley McDermott of Camrose, formerly Alliance were there. I saw Raymond and Carol Keufler across the room. Peter had a chat with Al Sloboda who was among the 400 plus people in attendance. Jamie Geddes, the new reporter for the Community Press sat across from us. She is in the process of moving to Galahad. I attended the meeting of the Provincial Council of Alberta Women’s Institutes at Olds this weekend. We were guests of Sandy and Terri Lorrie and treated very well. There are nine of us on council. We handled the business of the organization and did some planning for future fund raising and annual convention program. The head office has now moved out of Wetaskiwin to Westrose on Highway 13 and 771, west of Mameo.

Conference in India I had a chat with Kathy Charpentier of Castor. She has just returned from a wonderful trip to Chennia, India where she represented the National Farmers Union at the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW) Conference. She found it to be an interesting conglomerate of women. Kathy attended the Agricultural Committee meeting. The ACWW has an advisory capacity at the United Nations. There were 400 delegates from 70 different countries. The Daughters of Mary Immaculate hosted the event. For three years the

DMI received funds from the organization to help them in their work as an orphanage that educated the poorest of the poor. Following the Convention, Kathy was taken on a tour out to some villages. She found the people everywhere to be most gracious but living in a land of contrasts. One minute there would be the smell of filth and the next the lovely scent of flowers: the sight of beautiful buildings and then the sight of squalor just next door. The dancing and singing really pleased Kathy. The language of the region was Tamil. The city of Chennia has over four million people. It is situated in the state of Tamil Nadu on the Bay of Bengal in the south of India. Chennia was know as Madras until 1996. It is known as an ethno-religious community since there are so many different cultures and religions there. I went on the ACWW page on facebook and saw a picture of Kathy at the convention as well as the other delegates from Alberta. Alberta Women’s Institutes and the National Farmers Union each had five votes at the meetings. The next meeting of the ACWW will be the area conferences. The Canada Area conference will be held in Camrose, Alberta in June. The next international one will be in Birmingham, England in 2016.

Check all bins of stored canola Agri-News A lot of canola went in the bin hot and will still be hot unless it has been aerated or turned to cool it down. Pockets of green seed, tough seed and dockage within an otherwise dry and cool bin can also lead to spoilage. Damage often occurs when you least expect it. Neglected canola bins are at greatest risk. All canola should be conditioned right after harvest, and checked at least a couple of times in the first four to six weeks to make sure the temperature is cool and stable. “The safest bet is to assume that all canola is at risk. To put canola in the bin and forget about it really isn’t the best option,” says Keith Gabert, agronomy specialist with the Canola Council of Canada. “When heating occurs, it is often a surprise because the grower didn’t expect that particular canola bin to spoil. They checked their tough canola, they checked their hot canola, but assumed the relatively cool and dry bin was safe.” Green seed and dockage increase the risk. And bins that are dry or cool on average may contain a few loads that are tough or hot. “Tough canola from a slough bottom or a little green material that gets into the bin can be enough to start isolated heating that can eventually damage a whole bin,” Gabert says. Adding to the risk this year is that, with a bumper crop, more canola may have gone into bins without aeration. Immediate aeration is recommended to lower the temperature and even out moisture. Canola not on aeration should be watched regularly. Probing grain through the bottom and top hatches is one way to check bins, particularly bins without monitoring cables. In fall and winter, moisture migrating through the grain is most likely to concentrate at the top of the central core, so probing the top will be required. Gabert recommends a composite sample of half a dozen probes. Use a probe on a pole so you can get into the central core. “Probing the top of a bin can be awkward, so please use a safety harness to reduce the risk of falling,” Gabert adds. A more effective and probably safer way to check canola is to remove at least one third of the grain from the bin. This takes more time than probing, but it also exposes canola to cool fall air, reducing its temperature. Be hands-on when moving the canola. Watch for clumping. Sniff for the musty or burned smell of spoilage. Feel for temperature differences as the grain comes out of the bin. “If anything seems off, move the whole bin,” Gabert says. “Moving canola around could be a challenge this fall if growers have no extra bins to move it to. In that case, growers may consider delivering the highest risk canola as early as possible.” For growers holding out for higher prices, safe long-term storage is key. “However, holding out for higher prices only works if the canola also maintains its high quality,” Gabert says. “That is why it’s important to check Westerner all bins. For bins of

concern, taking time to unload a third or more of the bin to cool it down and check for damage is definitely worth the hassle when you consider its value.” The ideal canola conditions for safe longterm storage are temperatures throughout the bin of 15°C or lower, and moisture at or below 8 per cent.

Looking to get spooked at the annual Czar haunted house by Colten Carston As Halloween quickly draws closer to our little corner of the Municipal District of Provost local people are full of excitement and ready to get spooked at the Czar haunted house, happening the evenings of October 31 (Halloween) and November 1 at the Skating Rink in Czar. Local Hugenden Public School students and prominent citizens of the Czar area Reece Marchand and Samantha Deering - were in charge of starting up and running this local haunted house. Reece says Czar local, Tracy Deering did the organizing of the haunted house for years. This year she decided to ask if her daughter Samantha and local boy Reece wanted to do the organizing. The answer was an enthusiastic yes! “The only admission is a donation,â€? says Reece, “the donations go towards future haunted houses, not towards any specific organizations.â€? This haunted house is one of the main events looked forward to in the fall. The first haunted house occurred in 2000. Organizers Samantha and Reece invite everyone to come check out their creations. They would like as many people as possible to that this year’s haunted house can be successful. This spooktacularly awesome haunted house is suitable for all ages. For those who scare easily or are fainthearted, Reece recommends to come early when the lights are still on. For those who love to be frightened and scared out of their wits, the lights will go out at 6:30 pm and will stay that way until closing. So if you and the whole family wish to be scared on the most frightful night of the year, go for a drive to the beautiful

Stettler Camp of the Gideons Stewardship banquet Katie Davis News Reporter The Stettler Camp of the Gideons held their 43rd Annual Stewardship Banquet on Tuesday, October 22 in Veteran at the Community Hall. The evening included a meal, musical performance by Ben and Shirley Klumpenhower, guest speaker and Regional Facilitator Casey Bjorndal and a pastoral blessing of the bibles to be handed out to Grade 5 students. “The meeting was about the work of the Gideons all over the world,” says Ronald Allison of the Stettler Gideon Camp, “We have banquets each fall as information meetings for the Christian public. We present what we’re doing with the hope that there will be donations to any projects we’re doing.” The Canadian branch of the Gideons was founded in 1911. The association was formed by three travelling salesmen to encourage their faith and spread their knowledge of the Bible through evangelism. The group continues to reach out to wider demographics internationally. Discussed was the upcoming trip to China to distribute bibles. “It’s a major initiative,” notes Allison. Also in the works is a trip to the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The Gideons displayed new magazines and cards they have made to distribute quotes from scripture, and new mobile applications for the iPhone generation. “It’s definitely for the younger people that are using these programs all the time,” says Allison, “it’s great to have it available for them.” The Gideons continue to work at a local level, with the Gideon Bibles paramount to their message. “We continue to distribute testaments and Bibles to hotels, motels and individuals,” says Allison, “[We distribute to] nurses, servicemen, grade five students and the general public for that matter too.” Allison says the work of the Gideons can be viewed as a larger initiative.
