Success is in the mail Canada Post Corporation is a tough topic to write about and very rarely gets a positive note, but I would like to share a few thoughts.

Port Credit Village Times

Port Credit’s Community Newspaper Volume 08 | Issue 01

The Village Times was launched in 2005, and at the time, it was determined that even though the costs were high, the best distribution for our community papers would be by Canada Post. The decision has proven to be a solid one, providing access to our readers and giving our advertisers maximum results. 95% of Canadians open their mail the day they get it, making Canada Post one of the most reliable ways to ensure our readers receive our messages. We can reach complete sections of a community, or just one street. Using demographic filtering abilities, we are able to target postal walks associated with the community.

Bi-monthly Publication ~ Circulation 25,000 Delivered by Canada Post

Honoured to be awarded the first Timothy Street Medal of Honour award.

Canadians are very likely to respond to mail. The return on investment to our advertisers is significant. This has proven to strengthen our readership and advertising base over the years. Recently a customer was scammed a fly-by-night delivery service. These companies are not options for distribution. Canada Post has proven to be reliable and effective for our distribution.

Indian Cuisine by the Lake: Indian Food at its Finest

Councillor Jim Tovey, Ward 1 update

By: Lindsay Howe

Putting the Port back in Port Credit

Indian Cuisine offers all traditional Indian food and a casual fine dining experience. Located in the heart of Port Credit, Indian Cuisine by The Lake is the perfect destination for any occasion.

Our Charter boats and Marina operations are a positive economic driver for Port Credit, contributing an estimated ten million dollars annually to the local economy. The fishing and boating community are also a source of pride and a rich component of our waterfront Heritage.

Whether you are having a romantic dinner, a night out with the family, or socializing with friends, everyone can enjoy the mouth watering food and relaxing ambiance Indian Cuisine offers. When people come to Indian Cuisine they know they are going to receive excellent service, quality and a delicious meal.

I am pleased to say we are currently undertaking a dredging project in the Port Credit Harbour. The purpose of the project is to deepen the marina basin, charter fishing piers and a section of the river channel. Dredging will continue until the harbour basin and charters fishing fleet docks are excavated to a minimum depth of 1.5 metres below the current elevation of the lake. The harbour is expected to get deeper as lake levels rise in the spring and summer. The area south of the Marina Park parking lot is being used for temporary storage of mud removed from the harbour. The mud will be tested for contaminates and then removed for disposal.

The staff at Indian Cuisine is dedicated to their mission of providing customers with a unique and memorable dining experience. At Indian Cuisine by the Lake everything is made from scratch, by the best chefs in town. Fresh food and produce is brought in from the Ontario Food Terminal. Meals are prepared from fresh baked breads, kebabs from the Tandoor (Clay Oven) to Spice Infused Curries from different regions in South Asia.

The Dredging equipment is on site and excavation began as scheduled in midJanuary 2014. While weather related delays are expected, the dredging operation is on track for completion by February 28. Equipment will be removed from the site by March 31 and final clean-up of the staging area will occur in the spring.

The Sahdra Family has been in business in Port Credit for over 26 years. Owner Danny Sahdra has spent half his life in Port Credit and loves the unique, small town atmosphere the village offers. He is very open about how much he appreciates the support of his customers. Danny philosophy is to treat others the way you want to be treated. Danny learns from all his customers by listening to what they say and learning from them. This way his business is constantly evolving and his customers are kept satisfied.

Thank you to the Charter and Marina operators and employees for their assistance in moving this vital project forward in a timely manner. Working together we are putting the Port back in Port Credit

At Indian Cuisine by the Lake, the menu is constantly changing to offer customers a wide range of dishes. Their open style kitchen gives you the opportunity to watch your meal being made right before your very own eyes. Indian Cuisine offers mouthwatering by the Lake Wraps and Specials. Try the chicken platter for an assortment of Indian Cuisine’s famous Chicken Tikka, Afghan Chicken & Haryali Chicken & Chicken Kebab. Their clay oven’s creations include Fish Tikka, Tandoori Shrimps, Beef and Chicken Seekh Kebab. Indian Cuisine by the Lake is Port Credit’s hottest venue for Indian food. Indian Cuisine is located at 56A Lakeshore Road East. Visit Indian Cuisine on the web at indiancuisinebythelake.com. For more information call 905-891-3333.

The Mississauga Symphony Orchestra present Young At Heart Are you suffering from the February blahs? Do you need something to brighten your mood and remind you that spring is coming? The MSO has just the ticket! Join us on Saturday, February 8th at 8 pm for “Young at Heart”, a potpourri of irresistible melodies guaranteed to have you dancing in the aisles.

Feeling young again? Let’s have some more fun with the “Toy Symphony”, by Haydn or maybe by Leopold Mozart, musicologists don’t know who composed it. It doesn’t matter! Think back to the instruments you first played as a child; toy trumpets and drums, mixed with the calls of nightingales and cuckoos.

A trip to the underworld sounds gloomy – but not when French composer Jacques Offenbach takes you there. Your heart will be moved by the plaintive cry of Orpheus’s longing for his beloved Eurydice, but you will wind up tapping your feet to the irresistible cancan.

The grown-up version of this fun will be provided by Mississauga percussionist Bryan Allen, winner of the first MSO youth concerto competition, who will play Ney Rosauro’s challenging “Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra”. Bryan has played with many orchestras in Canada, toured China, and is currently a percussionist in the McGill Symphony Orchestra.

Canadian Godfrey Rideout’s exciting “Fall Fair” will remind you of hayrides and hoedowns in our own beautiful autumn season, with just a hint of melancholy as winter approaches. Then, jump on a horse-driven sleigh to drive through the Vienna woods, as the orchestra plays Johann Strauss’s famous “Blue Danube Waltz”. Next it’s off to the Russian steppes for Sergei Prokofiev’s exciting story of “Peter and the Wolf”, in which each character is identified by a musical theme voiced by a different instrument. Do you remember it from your childhood, narrated by Danny Kaye or Peter Ustinov? Our narrator will be MSO President Paul Weston.

We guarantee you will leave the hall dancing and singing and forgetting all about winter! Tickets start at $30, and can be purchased by calling 905-306-6000, or by visiting the MSO website at www.mississaugasymphony.ca. As always, the MSO will perform within the world class acoustics of the Living Art Centre’s Hammerson Hall located at 4141 Living Arts Dr., Mississauga, ON.

Dreaming of Summer at Peru Production By Maria Hall

We’ve reached the middle of winter and it’s gray and dreary. The fortunate ones are heading south and the rest of us are left dreaming about the sun on our faces and our toes in the sand. Walking into Peru Production’s showroom from the snow and ice will transport you to the sunny tropics immediately. The vibrant, warm colours of orange, yellow and fuchsia with the brilliant turquoise and lime will overwhelm your senses and take your imagination to a seaside resort.

HVAC4

Maria Hall, the owner of Peru Production established her wholesale company in the heart of Port Credit in 2006 at 1262 Hurontario St. (close to the GO station and across from Cousin’s market). She designs her 100% cotton gauze ladies wear clothing here in Canada and manufactures them in Peru, where the light weight, easy to care for fabric is available. The garments are all pre-shrunk by a special high temperature dyeing process. They are machine washable and hang to dry, no ironing necessary. The styles are perfect for cruise, beach or resort wear and are favourites with trendy ladies in the city who want to look stylish on hot summer days. This clothing line is distributed all across Canada and the United States to a variety of fashion boutiques where they are available to the public. Maria traditionally opens her showroom doors to friends and neighbours every spring for a few “Open Door” clearance events. These events are for shoppers to come in, browse, try on and select from many of the current styles and discontinued models at discounted or wholesale prices. There will be other events planned at different locations concurrent with the Showroom open houses this spring. Please, look for the ads, flyers and signs marking these events beginning with the first open house in March 1st and 2nd weekend between 11 am - 5 pm at the Showroom.

Sandy Dixon, General Manager of Lake Affect hopes the Tree Lighting Ceremony and Carnival becomes an annual winter event for the venue and community. Families attending the day’s event were treated to free cotton candy and carnival rides provided by Lake Affect Owner Billy Gordon. The fundraising continued well into the evening where folks danced to live music provided by Chuck Jackson and The Pie Guys. All money and nonperishable food donations collected at the door and money raised through the silent auction went to TBBC. Some of the items up for silent auction included Raptor tickets, an Argos jersey, tickets to see Beauty and the Beast that were donated by the Mississauga Living Arts Centre, a 32” flat screen TV donated by Costco and an iPod sound system unit donated by Molson Canada. The event brought in $1,400. Dan Meadowcroft, co-founder of TBBC says that 100% of the proceeds they raise go to the Mississauga Food Bank and The Compass Food Bank here in Port Credit. Last year TBBC raised $50,000 and collected 800 turkeys with the help of Charles Sousa, MPP Mississauga South. We are raising more money this year than we have in the past” says Dan.

Glare: I’m squinting and it’s not the Snow!

xxx

By Silvia Yeomans, Queen Spectacle One of the common complaints we get at our optical shops: GLARE! Living in Mississauga, there are so many commuters. And since it’s already dark on your way home from work, glare from street lights and headlights are bothersome.

There is a simple solution: Anti-reflective coating. But, there are many more benefits to putting this coating on your eyeglasses and sunglasses. Anti-reflective coating (also called AR coating or anti-glare coating) improves both your vision through your lenses and the appearance of your eyeglasses. Both benefits are due to AR coating’s ability to eliminate reflections of light from the front and back surface of eyeglass lenses. AR coating is especially beneficial when used on high index lenses, which reflect more light than regular plastic lenses. The higher the index of refraction (of the lens material), the more light will be reflected from the surface of the lenses. Regular plastic lenses reflect about 8% of light hitting the lenses, so only 92% of available light enters the eye for vision. High index plastic lenses can reflect up to 50 percent more light than regular plastic lenses (approximately 12% of available light), so even less light is available to the eye for vision. This can be particularly troublesome in low-light conditions, such as when driving at night. Early morning commuters experience it too. But glare from streetlights and headlights are not only bothersome, but dangerous. Today’s modern anti-reflective coatings can virtually eliminate the reflection of light from eyeglass lenses, allowing 99.5% of available light to pass through the lenses and enter the eye for good vision. By eliminating reflections, AR coating also makes your eyeglass lenses look less visible so people can see your eyes and facial expressions more clearly without the obstruction of the glare. Anti-reflective glasses are also more attractive, so you can look your best in all lighting conditions. The visual benefits of lenses with anti-reflective coating include sharper vision with less glare when driving at night and greater comfort during prolonged computer use (compared with wearing eyeglass lenses without AR coating). A big benefit too is on sunglasses. Putting an anti-reflective coating on sunglasses eliminates glare from sunlight reflecting into your eyes from the back surface of tinted lenses when the sun is behind you. (Generally, AR coating is applied only to the back surface of sunglass lenses because there are no cosmetic or visual benefits to eliminating reflections from the front surface of darktinted lenses.) Most premium anti-reflective coatings include a “hydrophobic” surface layer that prevents water spots from forming and makes the lenses easier to clean. Some AR coatings also include an “oleophobic” surface layer that repels skin oils and makes it easier to remove smudges from the lenses. Some eyeglass lenses have factory-applied AR coating on both lens surfaces. Other lenses, particularly progressive lenses and other multifocal lenses (i.e., bifocals and trifocals), have the coating applied after the lenses have been customized to your eyeglass prescription by an optical lab. So, is an anti-reflective coating for you? It really does suit most. It looks nicer, and performs well. This is an article that was requested by a client. Young or old the newest technology is finally finding its way into the Real Estate Industry By Theresa Baird

Realtors were so amazed when the fax machine was introduced into the industry. To be able to send a document to the other side of a Real Estate transaction without having to make that drive across town was a true time saver. Documents took their wear and tear if the transaction was sent back multiple times but it still saved so much time. Electronic signature solution helps real estate professionals:

Scanning and emailing again changed the industry but so much paper was still being used. You printed it, still visited or emailed documents to your client, they sent it back, you printed and signed and scanned and emailed again. The process while faster was still arduous.

Save time & money – DocuSign/Dotloop electronic signature eliminates the need for printing, faxing, scanning and driving across town to get signatures so documents are signed online in minutes, not days.

Many of us wish for “no more paper”. No more fax machines and no more wasting time. I am finding it a continuing question from young property buyers, sellers and other Realtors who are ‘tired’ and ‘frustrated’ by the traditional process of signing on the dotted line why we can’t E-sign.

Gain visibility & control – DocuSign/Dotloop programs lets agents see who has signed documents when, and stores the documents in the cloud for easy access by all signing parties.

Finally this may all change in Ontario soon. A private members’ bill to amend the Electronic Commerce Act to allow for the use of electronic signatures in real estate transactions has gone through a second reading.

Enhance client satisfaction & loyalty – Electronic signature is easy and fast so home buyers and sellers can conveniently sign anytime, anywhere, on any device.

Despite all provinces, except Manitoba and New Brunswick, excluding electronic signatures involving the purchase and sale of real estate, all other documents such as “The Listing Agreement, Agency Representation, and Fintrac can all be done with electronic signature. We are anxiously waiting the day when the Agreement of Purchase and Sale can be signed electronically in Ontario.

Theresa Baird is a Broker with Keller Williams Realty Solutions and can be reached at 647-298-0997.

First-time and young buyers are really surprised that we cannot allow an online signature, especially as most of their daily transactions are online and they don’t see how real estate should be any different. The United States and other provinces have been doing this for some time now. While we know some of our ‘older’ clients may still prefer to use a fax/scanner or be present with us to sign all the documents required. It would be great to have an industry that suits our entire client base. A number of hours per transaction can be saved by all people involved in the sale or purchase of a home, that in it can save paper, time on the road, logistic nightmares and anxiety that can be involved in putting a deal together. So embrace the change when it finally comes and get prepared to use your Electronic Signature on your next purchase or sale.

Community Strength Fights Hunger and Feeds Hope

Heroes of 2014

By Silvia Yeomans, Queen Spectacle

By J. Knox

The fundraising event ‘Twas the Bite Before Christmas Turkey Dinner, now in its fifth year, was once again a sold out event.

I was inspired by the manager of the Port Credit BIA, Ellen Timms. She’s honoured some of her heroes, and I thought it would be great to continue with the same spirit. This month I’m honouring one of my heroes; my daughter Anni.

The 620 seat family friendly event held at the Oasis Convention Centre, Mississauga is organized by Dan Meadowcroft, co-founder of the non-profit, community driven organization ‘Twas the Bite Before Christmas (TBBC).

A few weeks ago, Anni was asked to be one of this year’s Youth Ambassador for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). She had no idea what her task was going to be, but she was ecstatic about being “famous”.

This year’s TBBC campaign have brought in upwards of $60,000. “One dollar will buy three meals. We donate 100% of everything we take in to the Mississauga Food Bank and the Compass here in Port Credit. The Mississauga Food Bank and Compass use it to distribute food amongst the community”, says Dan.

As many in the community know, my daughter Anni has juvenile diabetes. She is insulin dependent and checks her glucose levels daily. She goes through about 150 needles a month. She doesn’t understand pity, so don’t send it her way. She’s a tough girl who plays sports, dances and does all the things any five year old girl does. But, as a Youth Ambassador, the only difference would be, in her eyes, she will also be “famous”.

The Port Credit BIA, a partnering organization with TBBC for the last 5 years not only manages the collection of non-perishable food donations during the campaign but they also help to organize the dinner and several other community events that take place during the TBBC’s season long effort to raise funds and awareness. Awareness is spreading, reaching small businesses owners and members who take initiative through out the campaign.

Saturday morning, Anni woke up and came to our room. She knew this was going to be a busy weekend. She jumped on our bed and said, “This is going to be the best weekend of my life!” On Saturday, JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) was hosting an evening to celebrate AMAZING children living with Type 1 diabetes. We knew she was going to receive an award, so we invited her aunts and uncles, grandparents, cousins and godparents. She came with an entourage. She received her Award for Courage. She had the privilege of meeting many of the people who work at JDRF, other children with Type 1 diabetes and she met (and got to skate with) a hockey player from Winnipeg who plays for the WHL and lives with Type 1 diabetes too.

One such person is Joe Leroux, owner of Amadio’s Pizza who raised over $3,000 by donating $1 for every pizza sold during the month of December. Over $7,000 was made in direct donations to the Mississauga Food Bank Website, www.themississaugafoodbank.org in the name of ‘Twas The Bite Before Christmas.

On Sunday, we took Anni and Alistair (her older brother) and headed to Air Canada Centre and met two Toronto Maple Leaf players, James Van Riemsdyk and David Clarkson. They got a Streetsville Stingers hockey puck signed and autographed photos of the two players. They even got to skate on the same ice that the Leafs skate on. So exciting, especially in the eyes of a child. “Best weekend of my life”...How amazing can those words be for you? For me, she is my inspiration to dream big and still be grounded and enjoy all the wonderful I have in my life. The things that are sometimes difficult to live with can still have such a joyous energy surrounding it. She has inspired me to have my “best weekend of my life” on a daily basis. JDRF is a global leader in the search to find a cure and end Type 1 diabetes. The Tim Hortons Southside Shuffle Brings Home Another Win By J. Knox

The Tim Hortons Southside Shuffle Blues and Jazz festival brought home the Blues Booster of the Year award from the Toronto Maple Blues Awards 17th annual gala at Koerner Hall in Toronto on January 20th, 2014. Members of the Southside Shuffle board attended Monday night’s awards ceremony as Bruce Forth, past festival Chair, graciously accepted the award that was given to the Southside Shuffle by the Toronto Blues Society (TBS) in recognition of the festivals continued promotion of Canadian Blues talent throughout the last 15 years. Also in attendance on behalf of the Southside Shuffle was Ron Duquette, newly appointed Chair of the festival. “This award is certainly a tribute to Chuck Jackson’s vision and passion but it is also a testament to what a small group of community volunteers can achieve when they focus their minds on a goal and commit to achieving that goal. Thanks to them, the Tim Hortons Southside Shuffle has matured to become an important signature event for our city and a significant economic windfall for Port Credit, and I believe is very deserving of this honor. Our festival is destined to become one of North America’s premier annual gatherings of Blues enthusiasts in the years ahead” says Ron.

Photo provided by Ron Duquette.

The award ceremony hosted by Dawn Tyler Watson and JW-Jones also featured performances by Blues acts from across the country representing the best, most current music on the scene. Nominated by a panel of Blues experts from across Canada, winners in all categories, (excluding instrumental categories) were selected by blues fans from across Canada through the TBS website voting poll. Other award recipients that night were Ottawa based, swamp blues rockers and Juno award winners, Monkey Junk (singer Steve Marriner, guitarist Tony D. and drummer Matt Sobb) taking home a total of five awards from categories including Recording of the Year and Entertainer of the Year, for their album All Frequencies. The Tedeschi Trucks Band was awarded with the BB King International Artist of the Year.

Turn up the Heat

By Ric Cooper, Ric’s Recollection With the Christmas ornaments safely packed away for another year and the temperature dropping faster than the needles on a month old Christmas tree, I thought I’d offer a few suggestions on turning up the heat musically. The vinyl resurgence is in full swing and with so many new labels popping up that it’s hard to keep on top of it. Companies like 4 Men With Beards, Purepleasure and Friday Music are all specialty labels producing excellent reference quality versions of famous LPs. There are many other European pressings that beg the question, which ones are legitimate and exactly which masters are being used to produce the LP? Kind of Blue, the biggest and best selling jazz album of all time has 10 different vinyl editions currently available!! The “hottest” sellers right now seem to be ones taken from original masters and older titles that have long been out of print. Add to these, the “newly discovered” recordings from the 70’s like the latest releases by Neil Young. Neil has loads of recordings stashed away in his vault. The latest two have been Live at the Cellar Door 1970 and Massey Hall 1971. Never released before, they now see the light of day and qualify as “new” recordings! Obscure artists like Rodriguez and Nick Drake are finally get some attention with their LPs being picked up for major distribution. Both of these artists were near impossible to find in the past and their brilliance finally gets to shine. Perennial sellers like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and The Beatles are all getting re-releases and with the 50th anniversary of the Beatles appearance on Ed Sullivan, watch for the massive ad campaign. Cool jazz is even “red hot” in the re-issue department. With the baby boomers closing in on retirement and starting to slow down, they are spending more time listening to music and checking out genres that they skipped during their hard rock and metal heydays. Jazz on the Blue Note label tended to be funky before funk was in vogue and many boomers enter the jazz genre via this label. Definitely worth checking out! Here’s a couple of ideas for a “hot” Valentines. Almost any Barry White album or John Klemmer “Touch” LP will certainly set the mood right. Do your best to stay warm, be kind to each other and enjoy the music.

What an Eye Exam Can Tell You About the Rest of Your Body

RRSP or TFSA

By: Dr. Justine Fung, O.D.

Optometrists are constantly encouraging their patients to have regular eye examinations because many eye diseases can be diagnosed before noticeable symptoms occur.

One question that often comes up at the beginning of the year is whether to put money into a registered retirement plan or increasingly popular tax free savings account. There are several differences between these two investment concepts that need to be pointed out.

Furthermore, many medical issues found throughout the body can first be detected through the eye. Here are a few common medical conditions that may be first seen by your optometrist: Hypertension - Commonly known as high blood pressure, hypertension can often be detected by examining the retina, which is located in the back area of the inside of the eye. The retina is the only part of the human body where a doctor is able to non-invasively view blood vessels. This allows the optometrist to see the weakening and narrowing of arteries that can signify elevated blood pressure and heart disease. Diabetes - Diabetes is the single largest cause of blindness in Canadians. Diabetes can damage the blood vessels of the retina which may cause swelling and bleeding in the back of the eye. It is not uncommon for optometrists to spot early diabetic changes in the eyes of patients who have yet to be diagnosed. With early detection and treatment of diabetes, the risk of vision loss can be significantly decreased. High Cholesterol - Patients with high cholesterol may also show signs in the eye. If the optometrist detects cholesterol deposits in the front part of the eye, they may recommend further testing of the patient’s cholesterol levels by their family doctor. Autoimmune/Inflammatory Diseases - Uveitis is an eye disease that causes redness, watering, light sensitivity and pain in the eye. It is caused by an inflammation of the uveal layer of the eye and can be diagnosed and treated by the optometrist. Uveitis may occur in patients randomly but patients who have suffered from multiple cases of uveitis are usually sent for lab work to test for other inflammatory disease such as rheumatoid arthritis or sarcoidosis. Routine eye examinations are not only important to maintain good vision and eye health, but may be a key part in keeping other parts of your body healthy as well. Patients of all ages can benefit from making an eye examination a part of their regular health care regimen.

1. RRSP is a tax deferral method. You do not pay tax on RRSP contributions in the year you contribute, but you will eventually have to include these funds in your income and pay tax on them. This will happen either at retirement or when you choose to withdraw from RRSP. TFSA is a way to shield your investments from tax on interest, dividends, or capital gain. Funds put into TFSA are your after tax dollars. But any increase on the value of your investment is tax free. 2. Money contributed to RRSP by March 3 2014 will be counted as direct deduction from income earned in 2013. Money put into TFSA will not be treated as deduction from income earned, and as such will have no effect on your income tax return. 3. Income or gain generated by your RRSP is not taxable as long as funds remain within RRSP. Once paid out (at retirement or before) it will be taxed at your marginal rate as regular income. Investment income or gain in TFSA is not taxable whether within the plan or when paid out. A balance between RRSP and TFSA depends on your current income vs. future income expectation. If you are in a higher income position now and expect to make less while at retirement, then RRSP saves you more on taxes. You will be including your RRSP or RIF withdrawals in the future, when your income from other sources will be significantly lower, as will be your tax. TFSA, on the other hand, will only shield capital appreciation in the future, but since you do not expect to earn a lot at retirement, additional investment income may not add a lot in extra tax. However, once you start drawing on your RRSP, you may lose your entitlement to the guaranteed income supplement available to seniors whose income does not exceed 16.7K (for a single senior).

Dr. Fung is an optometrist located at 102 Lakeshore Rd E and offers comprehensive eye examinations for adults, children and infants.

If you expect your income from before and after retirement to be in a similar tax bracket, then RRSP will not have a significant advantage over TFSA, other than time delay in paying tax. TFSA on the other hand will save you tax on investments which will hopefully appreciate in the future and will generate significant income stream.

Why planning is so important for small and medium business owners By Doug Kerr

In many situations, contributing to both RRSP and TFSA may be a good strategy. You will be taking advantage of time delay in paying tax on RRSP contributions while not paying tax on investment income shielded within TFSA. For people with employment income only, RRSP and TFSA are among very few tax savings strategies available.

As the first quarter of the New Year progresses, you are probably completing last year’s accounting and finding out how your business fared in 2013. But how are you defining a successful business year?

Eva Kupiec, CM and Beata Kurpiewski, CGA, Principals of Professional Accounting Office at 3461 Lake Shore Blvd. W. ; www.beaccounting.ca; 416 521-9188

Most private business owners evaluate their businesses using standard financial measures. Is this an appropriate evaluation of success for you? For example, if you are working 80 hour weeks and are totally stressed out all the time, but make a lot of money, do you consider yourself successful? Unlike large public corporations, whose shareholders are looking for sales and profit growth, you probably started your business to make more money, have more time and be in charge of your own destiny. Using financial measures alone simply cannot be used to define your business and personal success.

Are you comparing 2013 to 2012’s revenue and profitability? Or are you measuring your business on where you wanted it to be?

This is why it is so important for you to have both a written personal vision and a written business plan. Allen Fishman, Founder of The Alternative Board which runs peer advisory boards and coaching for small and medium sized business owners, uses the analogy of a bicycle for privately-held business planning. Just as the front wheel steers a bicycle, your personal vision must steer your business in the direction you want it to go. If you are not enjoying your role, or are working so hard that you cannot enjoy life, then your personal vision is not steering your business vision! Once you set your personal vision, then you can define a business vision that will act as the rear wheel of the bicycle, providing the power your business needs to propel it forward. This holistic approach to your business plan can now be shared with your employees, so everyone knows where the business is going and how to get it to its destination. While it is necessary to complete year end accounting, it is even more important to review, revise and re-write (or write for the first time) your personal and business visions to plan for an even more successful 2014.

m FINANCE Value For Money Investing means we wish to allocate and use our hardearned resources in order to improve investment outcomes in a continuous and sustainable way at a fair and equitable price. In other words, achieve good investment returns AND receive fair value for the services provided. Costs do matter!

Gordon is the Vice President – Financial Planning at Efficient Wealth Management Inc., a leader in cost efficient financial planning. He has taught at local colleges in both Financial Services and Accounting areas. He is also a frequent guest on television and has written numerous articles on investing and financial planning. See our ad “the Harvest is under way!” in this issue.

Value Your Tax Advisor as Well! It is RRSP silly season again. Every year at this time, we are inundated with radio, television and print ads that make no distinction as to who should be using RSPs. In fact, quite the opposite is true, and everybody that has a pulse and an income last year is encouraged to get that deposit in before March 3rd. The truth is, even before the introduction of the TFSA, RSPs were not wise choices for many individuals. Why? First, taxes! More specifically, YOUR taxes. The announcer, the actor, nor the writer of those ads, knows anything at all about YOUR taxes. Second. Refund myopia! How can we not love the idea of getting a cheque in the mail, from the government no less? Short sightedness triumphs and we see the benefit of an instant refund without adequate evaluation of the eventual taxes. All we see is that if we deposit $1000 we get a refund of $200, $300 or even $500. We have immediately turned a $1000 into as much as $1500. Wow! What is being missed though, is would you be as happy if the opportunity was presented as, “If you put in $1000 dollars now, I will give you $200 immediately, but when you take your $1000 back out, I will charge you $500 or $600.” Would you take that deal? Every year many do. How can that be the case? Well, the explanation is in YOUR taxes and you are unique. Get good advice. Do not just follow the piper of RRSP ads.

We are money coaches. We created a new coaching program called The Gratifying Harvest. The program helps you enjoy your future by carefully harvesting cash flow from your lifetime of savings or preparing you to do so. The Gratifying Harvest is an advanced program that takes everything to a much higher level and is only available from Efficient Wealth Management.

(subject to how it is invested) at any time. They are an obvious good choice for non-RSP funds, but even so they need to be integrated properly into your investment plans, because they do carry a few disadvantages. The most obvious one being some forms of investment income or gains are taxed at preferential rates and this preferable rate is lost on those assets when placed inside a TFSA. Your choice of what investments to be carried inside the TFSA, your RSP and outside of both still requires careful thought to maximize the available tax advantages. As technology has advanced, tax authorities everywhere have been able to increase information available to them and thus increase enforcement. Canadians, who are long term visitors to the US, are seeing heightened enforcement. If you spend too many days in the US this year (think more than 120 days/ 4 months) or in the 2 previous years, you may have to file a US tax return and pay taxes in the US. In the least you have some US non tax forms to file. Until recently, it was a practical reality, that neither Canada nor the US knew how many days you were in each country. Increased data collection at the borders and sharing of information among governments has changed that. Those 5 months in Florida may have additional costs attached to it.

TFSAs are a good alternative for many. Possibly, they are a great alternative for solving YOUR problem. Why? Simply because you get the exact same benefit of tax free compounding without the risk of undoing this advantage with an untimely or final withdrawal. Your tax free advantage is assured. With a RSP, it is anything but. TFSAs allow you to contribute $5000 per year for every year you are 18 or older after 2008 and $5500 per year beginning in 2013. Any income earned will NEVER be taxed. Yet the funds are readily available for withdrawal

Please hug your American friends, if they live here in Canada. They will need it, since this year it gets even worse for US Citizens or past and present Green Card holders living in Canada. The US Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) passed in 2010 is proposed to come into force at Canadian Financial Institutions on July 1, 2014. This Act requires Canadian banks to provide disclosure of US persons’ accounts to the US. US Persons can no longer assume they are invisible to the US tax authorities. As a US person, there has always been a requirement to file and pay any US taxes, wherever they lived in the world. Most US persons ignored this requirement if they lived in countries with a higher tax rate than the US and a treaty between their country of residence and the US. A decade ago, this changed when the US began more seriously enforcing some asset reporting from US persons living abroad and filing an income tax return became part of the response. Many chose to keep ignoring these requirements in the belief the US authorities knew nothing about their whereabouts. No longer is this true.

Increase your income through intelligent financial planning decisions.

Interestingly, a US person living in Canada and holding a TFSA may not have the same advantages as a Canadian and the account will not be Tax Free, likewise for RESPs. Both of which are not recognized by US tax laws. The convoluted laws also may affect the ability to hold Canadian mutual funds or some insurance policies. So if you are American born, but have lived in Canada your whole life and are a citizen, you are deprived of the same tax rights as a Canadian born citizen unable to gain the advantages of a TFSA, RESPs, all Canadian Mutual Funds and certain insurance policies.
