Get ready for Busker Fest 8! See page 11 for your Special Buskerfest Pullout Section
Over the last eight years, Port Credit Busker Fest has become recognized as one of the best and most exciting busker festivals in North America, if not the world. Every year on the third Saturday in August, audiences from all over Ontario visit Port Credit to enjoy a unique, fun-filled weekend. Performers come from Japan, Australia, the UK and beyond with impressive credentials. Many have performed their acts on television shows, movies, Broadway shows, circuses and of course, the Las Vegas strip. The occupation, a full-time job for most, does not discriminate; both men and women are equally appreciated on the world busking stage. There is no end to the variety and calibre of talent that the busker festival circuit attracts, so each year promises to be a brand new experience. While some of the audience’s favourite performers are invited back the following year, most of the talent will be busking on the streets of Port Credit for the first time. These mind-blowing acts are performed right on the street while the audience builds around their “pitch”. This tradition dates back centuries and is where the performers are most comfortable. All of the shows are family-friendly and free of charge, but tipping is encouraged. Many travel a long way for a small honourarium. We have seen contortionists and jugglers, break dancers and drummers, stilt walkers and clowns, magicians and musicians, to name a few. And that doesn’t say a lot about who they are – some of the most daring, funny and clever people you will ever see. But what makes a busker so unique? They are gutsy entrepreneurs who sell their talent... one coin at a time. They travel the world looking for venues to showcase their wares. And here in Port Credit, we are very lucky to have the world come to us and to see first-hand what incredible talent this year’s festival will bring! Port Credit Busker Fest kicks off on Friday, August 16. For more information about this year’s performances, check out www.portcreditbuskerfest.com.

Summer ain’t over yet! What an ugly summer we are having! We wished for hot steamy weather and instead we got cold, windy days and huge rainstorms. But by no means are we done yet. Summer’s only half over and there is plenty of time for some great weather! So get out and make the most of it. Port Credit has many events and festivals going on for the remainder of the summer including Busker Fest 8, Movies in the Park, Sunset Concerts, the Farmers’ Market and the 15th Annual Tim Hortons Southside Shuffle Blues and Jazz Festival. Port Credit is electric and always on! Use this issue of the Village Times as your guide for the remainder of the summer. The centre of the paper has a special pull-out Busker Fest section featuring performer biographies and a schedule of the weekend’s events. Remember to be kind and show your appreciation after the show and tip the busker. Also published in August is the award-winning official Tim Hortons Southside Shuffle program. In honour of their 15th Anniversary, RJ Entertainment Publishing and Migomedia created a special commemorative issue. Be sure to get your copy in the Village and use it as your weekend guide to one of North America’s premiere Blues and Jazz Festival!

Cycling Activist Dave Krentz Awarded Phil Green Recognition Award By Lindsay Howe The winner of the 2012 Phil Green Award is cycling enthusiast Dave Krentz. The Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee (MCAC) presented the award to Krentz at Mississauga Council on Wednesday, June 19th. Each year the Phil Green Award honours individuals who demonstrate a strong commitment to cycling, as well as support other forms of sustainable transportation in Mississauga. Dave Krentz was a natural choice for the Phil Green Award. On top of his 30 years of experience as a cyclist, Krentz has been hard at work on green initiatives such as his Getting There Green blog and Green Passport, a community based guide to travelling green from biking to taking the bus. He continually promotes green modes of travel, and educates community members about the best routes to take in an effort to motivate them to bike more and drive less. Krentz also works with businesses and their customers, encouraging them to take on a fresh approach to getting to work green. The award came as a complete surprise to Krentz and he was both delighted and honoured to accept the award. It is his hope to inspire cyclists young and old to pursue their ambitions as cyclists. Krentz began his journey as a cyclist in the 1980s, as a member of the Mississauga Cycling Club, and then later he went on to lead the cycling club. Krentz bikes as much as he can, no matter what time of year. On average, Krentz cycles an impressive 150 to 200 km per week. Krentz wants Port Credit residents to consider cleaner, greener ways go to get around, thereby reducing congestion and pollution. He states, “Change your default. For decades, taking the car wherever we go has been the default, the automatic choice. But for a lot of trips, cycling or walking are better choices. Make the bike your new default, and put the car lower on the list.” Krentz does not suggest we scrap our cars entirely, but asks that we make our driving habits a less frequent occurrence. Green Passport is coming out with a small pocket guide filled with maps, discounts, and green mobility tips. Green Passport also gives you greener ways of driving to save on fuel, and cut emissions behind the wheel, Look for Green Passport later this year, or early 2014. Let’s work together to incorporate walking, cycling, or roller blading into our daily travel schedules so that we are not so dependent on our vehicles. The Port Credit BIA congratulates Dave Krentz on this outstanding achievement. For more information and to stay up to date on Getting There Green visit www.gettingtheregreen.blogspot.ca. Join Green Passport’s Facebook pagewww. facebook.com/GPCanada. Stay connected by following Green Passport on Twitter @Green_Passport twitter.com/Green_Passport.

Bed race success! By J. Knox
On Saturday, June 9th, 2013 the inaugural Scotiabank Bed Race took place at Celebration Square in Mississauga. In support of the Trillium Health Partners an estimated 1,000 participants and community members were in attendance to help raise over $130,000.00. All funds raised during the event will go to Seniors Health at Trillium Health Partners. More than 20 teams of six people raced in decorated beds, in costume, through Celebration Square, battling each other for the title of Fastest Bed. Teams competed for prizes such as Top Fundraising Team, Best Decorated Bed and more. Between speedy and hysterical bed race heats, participants and their families were treated to a day of fun festivities including a kid’s stroller derby, bed making contests, inflatable bouncers, face painting, live music and a free BBQ picnic provided by Rabba Fine Foods and Pizza Pizza. “Our first Bed Race was a great success, and we had an incredible turnout, which is a testament to our community’s commitment to this hospital,” says Steve Hoscheit, president and CEO of Trillium Health Partners Foundation. “Seniors are the fastest growing population in our region which is why events like this are so important. The money raised will go a long way to ensure that our seniors have access to the highest quality of care, right here in their community.” The Trillium Health Care Centre Foundation, The Volunteers of Trillium Health Centre and partnering sponsor Scotiabank are all looking forward to making the bed race an annual community event. Organization for next year’s event is already underway. For more information on the Scotiabank Bed Race and Trillium Health Partners please visit www.trilliumgiving.ca/bedrace2013

The Bagel House in Port Credit Celebrates First Anniversary
By J. Knox
By Lindsay Howe
On July 4th, 2013 Stavebank Florist invited the community to come help them celebrate their 50th Anniversary.
The Bagel House celebrates its first anniversary on August 18th. The Bagel House located at 235 Lakeshore Road East opened its doors in Port Credit one year ago. The Bagel House has been successful from day one; more and more people continue to visit The Bagel House to experience their array of specialty bagels.
Since opening in 1963, Stavebank Florist has been a solid contributor to the Port Credit community. Once again, in wanting to give back to the community, new owner Mona Abdul, partnered with Molly Zito, Volunteer Run Director for the CIBC Run for the Cure and Rita Sacchetti, independent Jeweler and owner of Fifth Avenue Collection. The 50th anniversary celebration evening helped raise funds for charity.
To honour its one year anniversary, The Bagel House in Port Credit is offering customers a fun filled experience, as well as a great deal. When you buy a dozen bagels on August 18th, you will receive a dozen bagels for free! Come out to enjoy the celebration; The Bagel House will feature a tent out front with a clown, face painting, and much more.
All proceeds from items sold in the silent auction and 10% of the proceeds from Rita’s sales during the evening went to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The newly renovated, stunning boutique has had many changes since new owner Mona has taken over but the friendly, welcoming atmosphere has stayed the same and still offers high quality floral and gift choices for all occasions. Stavebank Florist is located at 120 Lakeshore Rd E., Mississauga. Phone 905-2782426 or toll free at 1-877-405-2426. Visit www.stavebankflorist.com for more information. Stavebank Florist is a proud sponsor of the CIBC Run For The Cure. For more information on this charity please visit www.cbcf.org
Owner Sat Chouhan speaks about the success of The Bagel House in Port Credit stating, “Word of mouth has spread about The Bagel House. People from all over Mississauga, Oakville and even Burlington are making the trip to Port Credit to sample The Bagel House’s signature bagels.”
In photo from left to right: Molly Zito, Volunteer Run Director for the CIBC Run for the Cure and Mona Abdul, Owner of Stavebank Florist.
With four booming businesses in the GTA, Chouhan and his partner Jessie Sahdra credit their success to their tasty Montreal-style bagels, and a strong desire to please their customers. Reflecting on a prosperous first year in business in Port Credit, Chouhan states, “This is tremendous, more than expected; hopefully we will continue to grow over the coming years.” The Bagel House offers every kind of bagel imaginable. From plain, sesame, poppy, onion, multi grain, pumpernickel, to everything bagel, the choices are endless. They also offer bagel deli sandwich and mini bagels. Choose from a variety of The Bagel House’s specialty cream cheeses including cheddar cheese, Swiss cheese or smoked salmon cheese spread. The food is made from scratch: hand-rolled, boiled in honey water and baked in a wood burning stove on the premises. Due to overwhelming demand, The three Bagel House locations in Toronto are open 24 hours. Currently in Port Credit, the store hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Chouhan hopes to extend the store hours of its Mississauga location to 24 hours in the near future, which seems like a viable option given the venue’s success this past year. Come out to The Bagel House and check out their mouth-watering bagels. The Bagel House is located at 235 Lakeshore Road East, just east of Hurontario. Back-to-School athletes need to keep their eyes safe! By Silvia Yeomans
September is Sports Eye Injury Prevention Awareness Month. Did you know that accidental eye injuries are one of the leading causes of visual impairment in Canada, and that over 100,000 eye injuries occur annually? Experts agree that more than 90% of these injuries could be prevented with simple precautions, including wearing safety glasses or protective goggles. Thankfully, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board is implementing safety glasses at many work places. The statistics are getting better, but injuries are still occurring. Now that kids are back in school, they’re beginning to play in their gym classes, recess and sports. Some parents are concerned about their children breaking their eyeglasses, and have them remove their eyeglasses when playing. The catch is that without their glasses, their vision is lost. Fortunately, more and more coaches, parents and children now realize that wearing protective eyewear for sports is beneficial in so many ways. The risk of eye damage is reduced, because lenses are made with an impact resistant material (polycarbonate) and the sports goggles have different cushioning that allow for impact to be much less painful and dangerous. On top of that, the player’s performance is enhanced because they see better! If your child wears eyeglasses and you know that sports are starting this fall, please consider this as an option for your child. Young or old, regardless of their competitive level, an accident is an accident – and hopefully it doesn’t happen to your child.
Children would sometimes hesitate at “looking funny” when they wore protective eyewear. Today, sports goggles are an accepted part of everyday life, much like the way bike helmets have become the norm. It is much more commonplace to watch a sporting event on TV and see an athlete wearing their sports goggles. Also, both children and adults like the image that wearing protective eyewear gives them: It shows they mean business on the playing field. That’s really the part the children like!
If you’d like more information on sports goggles, or if you’d like to take a look at this for your child(ren), feel free to visit any of our locations. If you have any questions regarding this article, or if you’d like to see a specific topic discussed, feel free to email me at silvia@queenspectacle.com. Queen Spectacle is located at 102 Lakeshore Road East in Port Credit and has locations in Streetsville and The Kingsway (Etobicoke) for your added convenience.
As a mom and an optician, there is nothing worse than seeing what protective eyewear could have prevented, and to wish it never happens to my child.

New Benches on the Waterfront Trail By J. Knox
During a ribbon cutting ceremony on June 25, 2013, Chris Mackie, President of the Cranberry Cove Port Credit Ratepayers’ Association, celebrated the 18 month long community effort to have two benches installed along the picturesque Waterfront Trail in Cranberry Cove, Mississauga. The two benches are situated between Ben Machree Park and JC Saddington Park, land that is currently owned by Imperial Oil but has been licensed to the City of Mississauga since 2005. In the initial agreement between Imperial Oil and the City, construction of any structure along the waterfront was prohibited. Imperial Oil Real Estate Manager Ed Charlton, was contacted by Mackie who asked if an amendment to that agreement was possible and indeed it was. City officials including Councillor Jim Tovey and Councillor Pat Mullin, promoted the project through Mississauga City Council and the new agreement was accepted by the City in November 2012. Once the City and Imperial Oil both agreed to the installation, Mackie began fundraising. Donations made by the CCRA and private individuals made up two thirds of the funds required for the benches. The Port Credit Community Foundation stepped in to complete the necessary funding. “The benches belong to the city of Mississauga, and they do not belong to our Association. The city has undertaken to maintain them - I hope that will not be a very onerous task for the city. We shall certainly keep a close eye on them” says Mackie. Is it Live or is it….?
The Mississauga Symphony Orchestra
By Ric Cooper, Ric’s Recollection Well, here we are in the mid to late summer and concert season is going full blast. There’s almost one show per night throughout the summer (Bieber doesn’t count!) and outdoor shows have become a staple of the concert calendar.
The Mississauga Symphony Orchestra appoints Denis Mastromonaco as New Music Director. After a long search, the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to appoint Denis Mastromonaco as its new Music Director. Mastromonaco has taken over as Music Director in June 2013 from Conductor and Interim Music Director John Barnum, who has been with the MSO for 34 years. Mastromonaco brings with him over 20 years of experience in conducting and teaching, with both symphonic and operatic groups. He has worked with orchestras nationally and internationally, including New York’s Orchard Park Orchestra, the York Symphony Orchestra, Czech Republic’s West Bohemian National Orchestra, the Etobicoke Philharmonic and the National Academy Orchestra of Canada, among many other orchestras and ensembles. A graduate of the University of Toronto, he has also studied conducting in Austria and Italy. He is a strong advocate for music within the community. Please join us in welcoming Denis Mastromonaco to the MSO!
I haven’t even included the shows at local bars or the ones with patio/stage combos. Have you been to one lately? There’s something special about sitting outside that just makes the event that much better.
For more information about the new Music Director and the Mississauga Symphony Concerts and Events go to MississaugaSymphony.ca or call 905.615.4405.
I have always loved going to live shows and while some stand out more than others, I think it’s the interaction between performer and audience that makes it special. The first concert I ever went to was the Beatles in Maple Leaf Gardens. Couldn’t hear much and definitely lost my voice screaming along with the rest of the crowd. Since then, I‘ve been to literally 1000’s of shows, some big (skydome) and many smaller more intimate ones. If you missed the Paint the Town Red/Canada Day shows in Memorial Park, well, let’s just say that you blew an excellent chance for stellar music in the park for free. I find it odd that with my love for concerts; I really didn’t enjoy live albums. For as long as I can remember, when I was buying LPs for my collection, I always avoided the live ones. They seemed “sloppy” as opposed to the polished studio tracks. I guess as I get older, I have grown to appreciate the virtuosity of the musicians more than the studio “trickery” on albums. The Southside Shuffle is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year and with 4 stages set up, it’s going to be a shuffle from one to another with all of the great bands playing. If you haven’t been to any shows this year, make this one a must on your calendar. Be prepared for some “magic” on the stages and a hint; if you see the musicians grinning ear to ear on stage, you know they’re having fun which always leads to a better show. I’ll have a booth set up in the park this year!!! So stop by and say hello.

Does a Home Address Matter? Have you ever thought about the house number on the street that you are thinking about purchasing on? You need to because the potential resale value could be impacted if the number is 4, 14, 24 etc. is in the address. Have you considered why? The number four sounds like the word “death” in Mandarin and Cantonese and many people in the Korean, Japanese and Chinese culture consider it very unlucky. Even listings in the $400,000 price range can be a challenge for Realtors when negotiating. Listing a home for $444,000 would not be a good idea in many Chinese populated neighbourhoods. I have listed homes that fell in the $400,000 - $499,000 price range and it helped to list with more 8’s like $488,888.

Mark Weisleder recently shared an article in The Toronto Star, warning Realtor’s and home buyers that because we live in a very multicultural country, we need to do our research in any community before we buy any home so we can learn if there are any local customs or superstitions that we can find that may hinder the re-saleability of the home in the future, it’s better not to have a surprise later on.

The CBC reported that “local councillors in Richmond Hill recently passed a bylaw outlawing the number 4 on all new streets.” “Existing streets with a number 4 are able to apply to change their number.” Many owners are making applications to change their number from 4 to 2, when there is no number 2 already on the street. If there is a number 2, you can apply to change your number to for example, 2B, but only if you get the permission of the owner of house number 2.

In Toronto, for a little more than $400, you can apply to change your house number. In Mississauga, the amount is $650 plus HST. You can find information on how to apply at www.mississauga.ca/portal/helpfeedback/faq. On the other hand, “the number 8 in Chinese is considered lucky as it sounds like prosperity. It also has a symmetrical shape which implies perfect balance. 28, 38. As eight means prosperity, twenty eight equates to ‘double prosperity’, 38 being one of the luckiest, often referred to as ‘triple prosperity’.” It is even better if your house number is 88. Remember that the Chinese Olympics started on 08 08, 2008. It was no co-incidence. Mark stated that he doubted “that a seller has any obligation to disclose whether their house number may cause a problem later with the re-sale of the home.” This however is another reason why you need to speak to the neighbours and research any community before buying any home, to learn if there are any local customs or superstitions that you should be familiar with, so you do not get any unwanted surprises later. We now live in a very multicultural country. Numbers matter to a growing group of potential buyers. It’s amazing how our world is changing so quickly, thinking ahead, being prepared, doing your research, working with knowledgeable professionals will make your experience of buying or selling a home a good profitable one. m FINANCE The Gratifying Harvest Journal
charged to clients. This is not the first study nor will it be the last to conclude that active management and paying for advice on investment selection does not have a positive effect on results. In other words, even if your advisor were to improve your returns beyond what would be achieved by doing it yourself, their fees would generally be greater than the difference. You pay to make less.
Efficient Wealth Management has created a new coaching program called The Gratifying Harvest. The program helps you enjoy your future by carefully harvesting cash flow from your lifetime of savings or preparing you to do so. We thought a column devoted to this pleasing idea would be great.
In September 2012, a Morningstar research paper proposed that it is not the investment selection that has the greatest impact on retirement portfolios, rather it is the intelligent financial planning decisions made during retirement. This report is in itself a whole article, so I will wait to explain the individual factors in detail in a future article. For now these 5 important factors are a) asset allocation, b) a dynamic withdrawal strategy, c) incorporating guaranteed income products, d) tax-efficient allocation decisions, and e) a portfolio optimization that includes the retirement liability.
Eeny, meeny, .... In the midst of writing this article about sorting through the world of financial planners, I was surprised by a piece of mail. I had had an award bestowed upon me. Gordon Stockman - Top Financial Advisor of 2013 in Mississauga, according to Top Choice Awards. This has, of course, made the article I was writing completely redundant and unnecessary. Choosing a new financial advisor is obviously easy now... call Gord, he is the Top Choice!
So, how do I select an advisor and what factors do I consider? 1) First and foremost give great value to professionals providing financial planning advice, not primarily investment advice. Remember, it is intelligent financial planning decisions that make the difference. Does their work encompass the five important factors identified by Morningstar? At Efficient Wealth Management we do.
Well, not so fast. The purpose of having an advisor is so that they can advise you. You will need to be willing to listen and interact well, regardless of your intended use of the advice. The value of such advice and from such a relationship will be highly dependent on the level of trust present and the quality of interaction. Interaction will include communication, education and coaching. Comfort with the relationship is going to be very, very important. Trust is influenced certainly by an advisor’s designations, industry channel of work, remuneration method, time in business, approach to investing, etc. Interaction will be influenced by personality, personal values, advisor knowledge, feelings of compatibility, etc.
2) Trust is paramount, so pay great attention to what indicates a professional’s likely future trust. Past behaviours and actions should demonstrate trust worthiness. Read what they have written. Ask them the what ifs that concern you. Listen carefully to what is said. Get and ask questions of their referrals, do not just accept the referral passively.
What advice is it that you want? Well, it generally should not be advice related to the selection of investments. The Journal of Investing in October 2012 concluded that active portfolio management did not add value in excess of fees
3) Learning and growing your understanding of your financial affairs is very important. Has the individual helped you or someone you know understand more. Do you know more at the end of your first meeting than you did? That is a demonstration of the quality of their teaching. Do you or someone you know act in a more disciplined or surer way than when the advisor came on the scene? This is good evidence of their coaching skills. 4) How are they paid? Commissions are not always bad, but regulators around the world are questioning the potential dangers that accompany them. Exactly, how much, when and based on what criteria, your advisor will earn their money, should be fully disclosed. Such disclosure should be very clear and understood by you. See points 2) and 3) above. Fees paid directly are the best, whether hourly or on assets, simply because there is less potential for abuse. 5) Do not rely on published accolades alone. Many Elite or Accredited status programs are really purchased promotional endorsements. The Top Choice Award program is independently administered, but am I the best out of thousands of professionals or of a couple of candidates with social media exposure? Mark your calendars. September 6th, 7th and 8th is the Fifteenth Anniversary of the Tim Hortons Southside Shuffle, Port Credits own world class Blues Festival. I will see you there.
Gordon is the Vice President – Financial Planning at Efficient Wealth Management Inc., a leader in cost efficient financial planning. He has taught at local colleges in both Financial Services and Accounting areas. He is also a frequent guest on television and has written numerous articles on investing and financial planning. See our ad “the Harvest is under way!” in this issue. We are money coaches. We created a new coaching program called The Gratifying Harvest. The program helps you enjoy your future by carefully harvesting cash flow from your lifetime of savings or preparing you to do so. The Gratifying Harvest is an advanced program that takes everything to a much higher level and is only available from Efficient Wealth Management.
