Tim Hortons Southside Shuffle By Linda Leatherdale CANADA’S LEGENDARY BLUES FESTIVAL TURNS SWEET 16 WITH A LINE-UP OF NOTABLE FEMALE ARTISTS.

BLUES LEGENDS AND SOUTHERN STYLE MENU KICK OFF SOUTHSIDE SHUFFLE AT THE ANNUAL BEGGARS BLUES BANQUET. DON’T MISS IT!

Janiva Magness, who in 2009 became only the second woman to be named the B.B. King Entertainer of the Year by the Blues Foundation, is among a starstudded line-up of female blues singers to perform at the Southside Shuffle this year.

What a way to kick off this year’s Southside Shuffle … a combination of awardwinning blues musicians with a delectable southern menu of Mississippi bronzed catfish and other legendary fare at the annual Beggars Blues Banquet, being held on Thursday, Sept. 4 at the Port Credit Legion.

“This is our Sweet 16th birthday and what better way to celebrate than with some great female acts,” said festival founder Chuck Jackson, the legendary blues singer with the Juno award-winning Downchild Blues Band.

“This event sells out fast every year, you don’t want to miss it,” says Chuck Jackson, founder of the Southside Shuffle, the three-day internationally-acclaimed blues festival being held in Memorial Park in Port Credit from Sept. 5 to 7.

Janiva, named “a blues star” by USA Today, is the headline act at the Heath and Sherwood Stage on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 11 p.m. She has also been named Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year and has released nine albums. Her song, Do I Move You, reached number 8 on the Billboard Blues Album Chart.

Every year, the Beggars Blues Banquet starts the weekend off right with its famous buffet style dinner, hot blues and special appearances on stage, along with a hopping dance floor. Joining Jackson and the award-winning Hogtown All-Stars are some of our favourite American blues legends, Watermelon Slim, Chris Gill and Texassippi Soul Man Danny Brooks.

Other notable female acts to perform at the Southside Shuffle, being held at Memorial Park in Port Credit from Sept. 5 to 7, are Irene Torres and the Sugar Devils (Heath and Sherwood stage, Saturday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m.), Dawn Tyler Watson with Paul Deslauriers (Stonebridge Wasaga Beach Stage, Friday, Sept. 5 at 8 p.m.), Angel Forrest (Stonebridge Wasaga Beach Stage, Sunday, Sept. 7 at 5 p.m.), Lisa Hutchinson (Stonebridge Wasaga Beach Stage, Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m.), Andrea Simone and Those Guys (DAWG FM/Mississippi “Find Your True South” Stage, Sunday, Sept. 6 at 2 p.m. and Enersource Stage, Friday, Sept. 5 at 6 p.m.)

Advance tickets, at $70, can be purchased at Impressionable Gifts, 74 Lakeshore Road East, Port Credit (905-271-8999). The banquet kicks off at 7 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion 82, 35 Front Street North, in Port Credit. The festival’s highlight will be the grand finale performance by Juno awardwinning Downchild Blues Band and its legendary singer Chuck Jackson, who 16 years ago founded Southside Shuffle, an internationally-acclaimed festival which has attracted more than a million fans worldwide. Southside Shuffle recently was awarded the prestigious Maple Blues Award for its contribution to the Canadian blues music scene. Jackson, for his contribution, was inducted into Festivals Ontario Hall of Fame, Mississauga’s Legends Row, Mississauga’s Music Walk of Fame, and awarded a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. Jackson has also been awarded numerous other awards, including Male Vocalist of the Year and with Downchild has been nominated four times for a Juno, winning Best Blues Album of the Year in 2014.

Southside Shuffle, now in its 16th year, is Canada’s prominent Blues and Jazz festival featuring the best of international and Canadian blues artists, and attracting more than a million fans worldwide since its inception. Tickets are $5 for Friday, Sept. 5 and $10 each for Saturday, Sept. 6 and Sunday, Sept. 7. Best value is a $20 weekend pass or daily family pass for four at $20. Free admission for children under 12.

“We are so proud of Southside Shuffle and all these accomplishments,” says Jackson, who encourages blues enthusiasts not to miss out on this year’s festival. “It will be another great one.”

Canada’s First-into-Battle WWI Regiment is Coming to Small Arms By Richard Collins On September 7, the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry will be marching into Mississauga. They’re arriving here as part of a nation-wide ceremony to honour the regiment’s 100th anniversary; and Mississauga was an important part of the regiment’s storied history. The “Princess Pats” was formed immediately after World War I began, when a Montreal textiles merchant, Andrew Hamilton Gault approached the government of Canada with an offer of $100,000 (about $2.5 million today) to raise a battalion to be the first Canadian unit to serve in the battlefield. The regiment was named in honour of Princess Patricia, the daughter of the Duke of Connaught, who was then Governor General of Canada. Although based in Western Canada today, the regiment continues to draw soldiers from all parts of the country. A Memorial Baton will be carried by soldiers of the PPCLI from Edmonton to Ottawa between August 10 (the date of the regiment’s call to service) and September 18, when it was formed in Ottawa. The Memorial Baton Relay will end in Lansdowne Park in Ottawa. The Memorial Baton will then be taken to Frezenberg, Belgium for a ceremony on May 8, 2015 to rededicate a memorial there honouring the PPCLI. The regiment played a critical role in stopping a German offensive here that threatened to overrun allied lines. The regiment commenced the battle with 547 soldiers. Only 154 survived. The Memorial Baton Relay will pass through the following communities, between August 10 and September 18: Alberta: Edmonton, Camrose, Wainwright, Calgary, Suffield and Medicine Hat Saskatchewan: Regina and Moosomin Manitoba: Brandon, Shilo and Winnipeg Ontario: Thunder Bay, Elk Lake, Espanola, London, Toronto, Highway of Heroes, Trenton, Kingston and Ottawa. The ceremonies in Port Credit and Lakeview will be on September 7. Quebec: Montreal and Mont St- Hilaire The Memorial Baton contains the Roll of Honour of the regiment, symbolizing the national character of the Princess Pats. The passing of the torch represents the enduring character of the regiment from generation to generation. The Roll of Honour is a list of the 1,600 soldiers of the PPCLI killed in action since World War I. September 7 will be a special day in Mississauga for the baton relay. The first Canadian commander of the PPCLI was Agar Adamson, whose home still stands at the south end of Enola Avenue. Adamson’s wife, Mable Cawthra served as a nurse. At 11 a.m., a plaque will be unveiled at the Adamson family crypt at Trinity Anglican Church at 26 Stavebank Road North in Port Credit by Adrienne Clarkson. The former Governor General of Canada is the colonel-in-chief of the PPCLI; carrying on the tradition from the first days of Princess Patricia, that a woman will always be the honorary commander of this honoured regiment. Adamson commanded the regiment from June 1916 until May 1918, and lead the troops in several battles including Canada’s historic victory at Vimy Ridge. Agar’s ashes, and those of his wife, are interred in the family crypt. After the plaque dedication, the Memorial Baton Relay will head to the Adamson Estate, 850 Enola Avenue, where a second plaque will be unveiled. The relay will continue to the Small Arms building, arriving at about 11:30 a.m., where the Centennial Display Team will showcase the regiment’s history. This showcase includes a 25-foot light armoured vehicle, a flying kitchen, a 50-foot tractor trailer mobile museum and a Kiddie Commando Camp with obstacle course, bouncy castle and camouflage face painting. There will also be a Bren gun carrier. Brens were made at Small Arms building after WWII. Ron Baldwin of Wounded Warriors will have a display, as will Army, Navy and Air Force, Lakeview #262. Hope you can join us for this family-friendly event.

4th Annual Doors Open Event By Richard Collins

The former inspection building of Small Arms Limited will be open Saturday, September 27, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Small Arms Society is excited to once again be participating in Doors Open Mississauga. This year we are looking forward to building on the success of the past two years where we hosted approximately 4,000 visitors. Our mission is to promote arts, heritage, culture and science. This is a unique opportunity to visit an Ontario heritage-designated building and discover its history and future. Come out and enjoy a fun day of activities, including tours of the historic building, art exhibition and sale with 30 local artists, lots of live entertainment and refreshments, Hits of the Blitz performances, and local performers from Frog in Hand. Frog in Hand was founded by two sisters, Noelle Hamlyn and Colleen Snell, in 1990 with a backyard performance featuring a frog circus. The artists of Frog in Hand, which includes dancers, musicians, actors, textile and visual artists, believe that art is a lived experience and can be found in the most humble places. The Frog in Hand company members have national and international professional experience in Canada, US, Japan, China, Korea, Ireland, Israel, Australia and UK. Doors Open will also include a presentation by Honourary Colonel Gerald Haddon, who is the grandson of John A. D. McCurdy. In 1909, McCurdy became the first Canadian to fly a plane. He was later hired as manager of Canada’s first flight training school, which was located on the Rifle Ranges in Lakeview. Heritage Mississauga will also be joining us at the Small Arms plant for Doors Open 2014. They’ll be here to distribute their latest heritage-themed comic book. The hot-off-the-presses second edition will be about the World War One flying aces that trained at a flight school at the Lakeview Rifle Ranges. There will also be displays by the Lorne Scots, Wounded Warriors, Lakeview Waterfront Connection, Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, Credit Valley Conservation Authority and Inspiration Lakeview. There will also be a display on the Hanlan Feedermain project. And don’t miss the biplane flyover! The Small Arms building is located at 1352 Lakeshore Road East, at the foot Dixie Road. It’s just a short walk west of the Long Branch Go Station. There will be parking at the rear of building.

Buskerfest

Port Credit Lawn Bowling Club Proudly Celebrates Its Centennial

continued from front cover

Port Credit Lawn Bowling Club traditionally opens each new lawn bowling season on Victoria Day. This year, Monday, May 19, 2014, at Port Credit, had a little more significance than in the past. This year the club used its season-opening venue to officially celebrate its 100th Anniversary.

Saturday, August 16th Buskerfest festivities are in full swing on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. The streets of Port Credit will be filled with fearless street performers, daredevils and stilt walkers all day and evening. The Saturday night showcase features: The Flying Tortillas from California, Wacky Chad from Boston and Jeff Niderman, a fellow Port Credit resident.

The energy of Port Credit Lawn Bowling Club, its 100th Anniversary Committee and supporting volunteers was very evident. The day began with a reception for members and invited guests – which included dignitaries from all levels of government, sponsors and a number of past members.

Sunday, August 17th Port Credit’s Buskerfest will wrap up on Sunday, offering another day of daredevil tricks, stunts, music and entertainment. The festivities will run from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Brace yourselves for the incredible Xtreme Finale at 7:00 p.m. at the Xtreme Tire Pitch in Memorial Park. The Xtreme Finale is a culmination of all the performers in one big fabulous show. These gutsy street performers will perform magnificent stunts, each act more enthralling than the next!

Master of Ceremonies, Charles Doering, a now-retired but wellknown radio commentator, started the Opening Ceremonies introducing “Cadence” as they sang O Canada.

Busker Academy Visit the gazebo in Memorial Park between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. for the opportunity to participate in all the fun and learn some of the awe-inspiring tricks performed on the streets at Buskerfest. Take part in a free workshop and learn how to perform stunts including juggling, stilt walking, balloon twisting and magic. Teaching the workshop is none other than the talented buskers themselves!

Political dignitaries were introduced, in turn, the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport) in Canada, Stella Ambler, MP for Mississauga South, The Honorable Charles Sousa, MPP for Mississauga South, Councillor (Ward 1) Jim Tovey, Alan Dean, President of the Ontario Lawn Bowling Association and Cecilia Hartl, General Manager of Port Credit Residences , the club’s centennial year title sponsor. Messages of congratulations, from Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Premier Kathleen Wynne were also read from the podium. All of the special remarks referred to Port Credit’s positive effect on the community and the sport of lawn bowling.

Trading cards will be handed out at select shows, collect them and have them autographed by your favourite buskers. While you are at Buskerfest, visit the International Music Pitch at the Port Street Market to relax and enjoy some great music! Live street theatre will be happening across the village. You do not want to miss out on a full weekend of family fun and entertainment! While Buskerfest is a free event, tips are strongly encouraged so give what you can!

Club President Helen Kinsella welcomed everyone to Port Credit and expressed the club’s pride in being an active part of the community. 100th Anniversary Committee Chair, Fran Todd, acknowledged the hard work of her committee and the support of many generous sponsors including Port Credit Residences, A2Z Branding, W.E. Enterprises, Avenue Moving, Rogers TV and City of Mississauga.

Visit Port Credit’s Buskerfest website at www.portcreditbuskerfest.com. Check out the map and event schedule online to see when and where the performances take place. Visit Port Credit Busker Fest on FaceBook and following on Twitter @ PCBuskerFest.

Following the remarks from the podium, Councillor Jim Tovey was asked to unveil a special centennial plaque the committee had prepared to commemorate the club’s 100th anniversary. Councillor Tovey was also asked to throw the “ceremonial first bowl”, a tradition at special lawn bowling events. His delivery was near perfect. Normally these last two ceremonial activities are reserved for Mayor Hazel McCallion. Given her busy schedule she was not able to make the Opening Ceremonies. As the members were getting ready for a catered dinner, Mayor Hazel, an honorary member of the club since 1983 made a surprise, but very welcome, appearance. Unable to join in for dinner, she stayed awhile and addressed the membership with her usual wit. Following a catered dinner, members lingered to reflect on a beautiful celebration that would kick off yet another season at Port Credit Lawn Bowling Club.

Port Credit’s Website Redesigned After 10 years, the Port Credit Business Improvement Area (PCBIA) decided it was time to revamp their website to make it more user friendly and compatible with all devices.

Professional Design Not only does the website have a sleek design and attractive layout, but it also has an easy-to-use business search bar to find places to shop, dine, stay or have fun, events that are easy to find and share. The overall look of the site is clean and clutter free, featuring quality images for viewing and menus and buttons for easy navigation.

The PCBIA underwent a vigorous selection process to find the best-suited and most capable web design professional to fill the position. An RFP (request for proposal) was sent to more than 50 interested parties. The PCBIA received 18 notable proposals and a committee of 10 was reviewed and scored.

Creating an Online Presence Insley’s vision was to go above and beyond the directory, and give each business their own page with the basic information, plus social media links, business hours, a description of goods and services, a Google map, Google Street View, current weather forecast and upcoming events. Giving each business an online presence allows potential consumers to connect with the businesses in the community and find all the necessary information they need.

Ellen Timms, General Manager for the PCBIA boasts, “Jon Insley of Instinct Digital Media was a clear winner. What was very exciting for us was that Insley’s family owns and operates one of Port Credit’s longest running businesses.” Not only has Insley been a Port Credit resident his whole life, but also his family has owned and operated a business in the village for over 100 years!

Overall Website Features The new PCBIA website is very accessible and simple to navigate. If a family from out of town is planning to visit Port Credit to do some shopping or go for a meal, it’s easy for them to find a place to go and also see the weather and events happening. Google Street View shows exactly what the building or storefront looks like and the map allows visitors to see the exact location. All pages can be viewed on mobile devices so even if you’re walking the streets, you can still search for a business and find information and directions right in the palm of your hand.

Insley’s skillset, experience and close affiliation with the Port Credit community made him the perfect candidate for the job. Needless to say, Insley pulled out all the stops to design an impeccable website for the PCBIA. Timms explains, “It was definitely a benefit to the PCBIA to have Insley redesign the Port Credit website because Insley, being a hometown boy, went above and beyond in his efforts to make the site robust and user-friendly.” About Jon Insley and Instinct Digital Media Insley has a strong background in technology and has been creating professional websites for over ten years. He started Instinct Digital Media two and a half years ago. His company focuses on web design services, including responsive web design with content management systems, site optimization, and social media services. Instinct Digital Media is experienced in creating many different types of websites for small and medium-sized businesses, real estate, bars and restaurants, and e-commerce stores.

Aside from serving as a valuable tool for tourism inquiries and local business information, the redesigned PCBIA website is also a depository for all PCBIA related information and documents. The Port Credit BIA would like to sincerely thank Jon Insley for transforming the website into a user friendly, technically sound and visually coherent webpage. For all things Port Credit, visit the village’s fully redesigned website at www.portcredit.com.

The PCBIA was so impressed with the website that they also hired Insley on to redesign Port Credit’s Buskerfest website at www.portcreditbuskerfest.com. For more information about Instinct Digital Media and their services visit www. instinctdigitalmedia.com. Responsive Web Design Web access via mobile devices and tablets has increased significantly over the past few years. To accommodate this shift, businesses require websites that are easily accessible, load quickly, and look good on devices of all sizes. Instinct Digital Media offers cutting edge, responsive web design and their websites are designed to provide an optimal viewing experience. This means you can easily navigate and read content from a wide range of devices. Insley explains, “As this trend continues to increase, it is important to look at web design from a mobile-first standpoint. It was imperative for the PCBIA website to be easily accessible, easy to use and attractive on mobile devices.”

Juzzie Smith - Australia

The Skit Disturbers Canada, Ontario

Reuben Dotdotdot Australia

A top-class ex Cirque du Soleil acrobat, whose love of street performing took him back to the hallowed concrete. He defies gravity and death with acrobatic stunts you need to see …to believe. The show that has it all – humor, handstands, and holding on for dear life! With a one handed balance 20 feet up in the air, concrete never looked so hard!

After Lynne Scott, Jessica Tontini and Natasha Bromfield performed live on stage in a Cinderella pantomine, they knew they wanted to keep the laughs going, and so, The Skit Disturbers was formed! Through their use of improvisation, characters and music, these playful gals have put their own spin on performing popular songs you thought you knew! They perform parodies of songs as “Lace on Fire”, a washed up all girl group that were popular in the 1980’s, and are desperately trying to hold on to their youth! Just try and sing along…they dare you!

Coppelia

“Is she real? Is she a doll? Watch her move and find out! Internationally acclaimed mime artist Kate Mior trots the globes charming the hearts and wallets from audiences from all over through her quick comic timing, incredible expression or simply by doing absolutely nothing.”

As a young father, tired of late nights on the pub circuit, Juzzie made a conscious decision to leave the pubs and take his music to the people; and the streets. So he took up busking, drawing bigger and more enthusiastic crowds each time he played. In this way, Juzzie created a reputation for himself, becoming a true grassroots phenomenon. A true musical virtuoso, Juzzie gives performances that are marked by an amazing ability to play guitar, harmonica and percussion at the same time using all of his body. “It is like dancing with music,” he said. It seems he is at home holding anything that makes a sound, and he combines this with a real rhythmic talent and a raw, warm vocal style. The result is truly engaging, mesmerizing music that makes you want to move and leaves you feeling inspired.

Precious World is Clarkson’s Exclusive Children’s Boutique By Lindsay Howe Precious World Children’s Boutique opened up three months ago in the heart of Clarkson Village. Precious World offers brand name, quality toys, clothing and other necessities for children at an affordable price. At Precious World you can find clothing that is new with the tags still on, or used a few times. This new and resale boutique caters to newborns up to age six. Their extensive toy collection includes a large selection of educational toys to stimulate children throughout their various stages of development. Owner Marco Vergara states, “We carry the most accessible and affordable prices in order to meet our customer’s needs, and negotiations are always welcome”. Precious World is an affordable alternative for parents because they are able to provide their children with the best toys and quality clothing without overspending. The boutique’s prices are comparable to about half the price of the bigger name stores. Children are constantly growing and quickly outgrow their clothing. Precious World works on consignment, giving customers the option of reselling their new and gently used items. Customers can bring in items and swap through consignment, or sell items to the store. Marco explains, “Precious World provides families access to quality kids goods by reselling new and fine used clothing, toys and accessories as way of promoting environmental consciousness, recycling and smart shopping, thereby keeping the local community connected.” Marco, and his wife Laura are passionate about supporting families in the Clarkson area. This young entrepreneurial couple dedicates their time serving the community and building relationships within it. When Precious World takes in and sells items, both parties profit from the exchange. Through taking in and reselling Precious World, this extends the life of these items. This process of taking in and reselling children’s goods saves families money but it is also good for the environment and our economy. Marco explains, “Growing families in a healthy environment is vital in our society and that is precisely the heart of Precious World, to connect our community not only through transactions but through friendship and service. Together we can make a stronger community that cares for their own, for each other and for the environment.” Precious World receives donations and gives away through local charities. Precious World supports local services like the Ontario Early Years, Bibles for Missions, Compass, Scott Mission and churches. They rely on the support of their customers to continue to give generously to needy families in the community. For all your children necessities, shop Precious World, Clarkson’s only children’s boutique. Precious World is located in the Turtle Creek Plaza at 1801 Lakeshore Road West, Unit 8. Evolve into the Best Version of YOU in ONLY 10 weeks!

Is it Live or is it….? By Ric Cooper, Ric’s Recollection

By Crystal Mallari, R3 Evolution Fitness Studio Tone, Burn Fat and have FUN with R3VOLVE BOOT CAMP! Mississauga’s Best Boot Camp!

Well, here we are in the mid to late summer and concert season is going full blast. There’s almost one show per night throughout the summer (Bieber doesn’t count!) and outdoor shows have become a staple of the concert calendar. I haven’t even included the shows at local bars or the ones with patio/stage combos. Have you been to one lately? There’s something special about sitting outside that just makes the event that much better. I have always loved going to live shows and while some stand out more than others, I think it’s the interaction between performer and audience that makes it special. The first concert I ever went to was the Beatles in Maple Leaf Gardens. Couldn’t hear much and definitely lost my voice screaming along with the rest of the crowd. Since then, I‘ve been to literally 1000’s of shows, some big (Skydome) and many smaller more intimate ones. If you missed the Paint the Town Red/Canada day shows in Memorial Park, well, let’s just say that you blew an excellent chance for stellar music in the park for free. I find it odd that with my love for concerts, I really didn’t enjoy live albums. For as long as I can remember, when I was buying LPs for my collection, I always avoided the live ones. They seemed “sloppy” as opposed to the polished studio tracks. I guess as I get older, I have grown to appreciate the virtuosity of the musicians more than the studio “trickery” on albums.

Results: Trim 6 – 11 inches in total. Reduce 2 -3 inches off your hips, waist & thighs. Increase strength 40 -100 % Join the next 5 or 10 Week R3VOLVE Boot Camp starting September 8, 2014! Do you want to commit to 2 x p/wk or 3 x p/ wk? Weight loss and reshaping your body are only a few benefits you will experience. By training 2 or 3 times per week, you will lay a new foundation on which to live a healthier lifestyle. Proper nutritional guidelines and fast and effective workouts will be the cornerstone to continue to follow these healthy living principles. After completing the 5 or 10 week R3VOLVE Boot Camp, you will also feel the ability to maintain the results you are guaranteed to achieve. You will discover a new-found energy and enthusiasm for life allowing you to reach for goals you had long given up or thought unattainable. We at R3 Evolution Fitness Studio are confident that once you have completed the 5 or 10 Week R3VOLVE BOOT CAMP, you will feel happier and healthier, and have the knowledge to continue on your path of healthy living!

The Southside Shuffle is celebrating its 16th anniversary this year and with four stages set up, it’s going to be a shuffle from one to another with all of the great bands playing. If you haven’t been to any shows this year, make this one a must on your calendar. Be prepared for some “magic” on the stages and a hint; if you see the musicians grinning ear to ear on stage, you know they’re having fun which always leads to a better show. I’ll have a booth set up in the park this year!!! So stop by and say hello.

SUITABLE FOR ALL FITNESS LEVELS. “R3VOLVE BOOT CAMP IS UNIQUE! I’ve been participating in Crystal’s classes and boot camps for over 2 years and after each one, feeling every bit of the anatomy at its BEST, satisfaction across the board! R3 Evolution Fitness Studio is the place to be for a great workout and to meet awesome people!” Evelyn Chan “R3VOLVE BOOT CAMP…the workout that no matter how much you psyche yourself up, you’ll always feel it is not enough because you never know what to expect! But you always feel a sense of accomplishment when you’re done!” Anthony Arindaeng Visit www.r3evolution.com or call 905-608-2839 for full details. R3 Evolution Fitness Studio is located at 3065 Ridgeway Drive, Unit #50, Mississauga, ON.

Are Contact Lenses Right For Me? By: Dr. Justine Fung, OD Summer is the most common time for my patients to consider contact lenses as an option for corrective lenses. A sweaty face can cause glasses to slip down on a hot day, and patients without prescription sunglasses often squint in bright sunshine. Here are some common questions and concerns regarding contact lenses:

Q: How young is too young for contact lenses? A: There is no rule that states a minimum age for children to be allowed to wear contact lenses. In some cases, contact lenses are even used on infants to assist in their visual development. When deciding the appropriate age for kids to start wearing contact lenses, their guardian should consider the child’s ability to handle the responsibility of caring for their contact lenses. It is important for patients of all ages to remember that contact lenses are medical devices that can cause harm when not used properly. Q: How old is too old for contact lenses? A: Every patient is different, but a common misconception is that everyone will need to discontinue using their contact lenses at some point. Around the age of 40, most patients will start experiencing presbyopia where they will require a different corrective prescription when looking far away compared to up close. Patients often believe that at this point, their contact lens days are over, but that is no longer the case. Multifocal contact lenses have been created to allow the patient to see both far away and up close. Also, aging can cause dry eyes in many patients. New technology in contact lens development has increased the water content and oxygen in lenses, so there is usually a solution for dry eyes when wearing contact lenses. Q: Can patients with astigmatism wear contact lenses? A: For most patients with astigmatism, yes absolutely! Astigmatism is a type of refractive error that occurs when the shape of the eye is not perfectly round. In most cases, astigmatism can easily be corrected by toric contact lenses which are designed specifically for astigmatism. The advances in contact lens technology have allowed optometrists to fit patients of all different ages and sizes. A visit to the optometrist can tell you what your options are outside of eyeglasses. Have a wonderful summer! Dr. Justine Fung is an optometrist located at 102 Lakeshore Road East and offers comprehensive eye exams and contact lens fittings for patients of all ages.

Make A Wish

By Marion Klinnert, Private Moments Lingerie and Ladies Wear

Walden Circle Retirement recently introduced its “Make a Wish” program for their residents. Residents are asked if there is something they’ve always wanted to do but haven’t had the chance yet and the staff would do their best to grant those wishes.

As fall is just around the corner we at Private Moments Lingerie and Ladies Wear are unpacking the latest and greatest apparel and accessories. Here are just a few of the categories that we showcase!

On May 22nd the first wish was granted. Kathleen Wood enjoyed a screening of the film “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”, a special Mango Lassi “mocktail” and a delicious Indian themed dinner.

Jewellery. You’ll see…regal or gypsy, exotic, oversize, lavish bibs, collars, overt pendants on long chain or cord, elaborate chandeliers, chains of all sizes and fringes, mix metals (white, yellow, bronze, rose, hematite and black), black on black, laden pearls, chunky crystals and rocks, colour stone mixes, cuffs and bracelets in multiples, new ear cuffs and hand jewellery.

Resident Jessie Ray, wished for a relaxing massage and Sandra Elise- Devine, Financial, Investment, & Retirement Planner from RBC sponsored Jessie Ray’s massage at Michael’s Hair Body Mind in Clarkson Village. When the staff at Michael’s learned about Granting Residents Wishes, they wanted to make the experience very special for Jessie and they included a 30-minute complimentary service of Jessie’s choice!

Handbags. Main silhouettes are drawstrings, backpacks, variation of clutches (soft ones, slip-throughs, oversized), small satchels, and tote bags. For finishes, look for menswear inspired plaids & tweeds, animal prints, exotic skins, calf hair and fur, chain handles, fringes, colour blocking or optical patterns. Scarves. What’s in? Oversized, cocooning, voluminous. Long and wide, also look for shawls, capes, capelets, collars and mufflers. Plaids are the craze, as are houndstooth, herringbone and checks. Fine knits and cashmere are quintessential in heather grey or camel! Luxurious furs and faux furs, fuzzy, shaggy or curly!

Maryan Tisdale also wanted a relaxing massage and Evelyn Thoy from Downsizing Diva & Scott McNabb from Homewatch CareGivers sponsored Maryan’s Tisdale’s massage. Maryan also had her relaxing massage at Michael’s Hair Body Mind and Maryan also enjoyed a 30-minute complimentary service of her choice as well!

Hats are over the top! Fur, felt, or feather, topers are scene-stealers. High, wide, or oversized, hats are not to be missed. Your best bet is to check out our FaceBook page to see more “trends” and specials of the week.

Dave Shelley always wanted to play in The Masters. The staff organized an afternoon of nine-hole mini-putt for Dave and at the end presented Dave with a green jacket. Talia Khanania from Elder Care Transitions sponsored Dave’s wish.

Please remember that shopping locally not only saves gas but helps the economy! Hope to see y’all soon.

Walden Circle Retirement is truly thankful to their community partners who helped make the residents wishes come true. They will be granting wishes throughout the year for all residents.

Are You Ready to Be a Real Estate Investor? By Theresa Baird - Broker Keller Williams Realty Solutions

Are you a first time investor or a seasoned one? The process can often be confusing. Here are some tips to help guide you through the buying process.

9. Be careful not to buy and sell properties too quickly. The Canada Revenue Agency may view this activity as business income. This means that you will have to pay tax on any profit you make on your investment.

1. Visit with a mortgage broker or your bank to determine how much money you can afford to borrow responsibly to invest in Real Estate.

You may prefer to buy properties for the long term, rent them out and use the positive cash flow to reduce the amount of the mortgage owing, by building equity in your property. If you sell the investment property years later for a profit, it will likely be classified as a capital gain and thus one half of your gain will be tax free.

2. Cash flow is critical and looking for properties that provide this is key. What cash flow means is that the rent that you receive from tenants should be enough to pay your mortgage payment, property taxes, utilities and insurance bills. It is wise to budget an additional ten percent on your overall payments to pay for minor repairs that will invariably arise. Finding homes in the Toronto area that fit this scenario are proving to be more difficult. You can expand your search to smaller communities such as Mississauga, Burlington, Hamilton or even Stoney Creek, where you will be able to find more properties that match your search criteria.

10. Don’t be afraid to walk away if the deal criteria doesn’t work for you, no matter how much time you may have invested in the property. Walking away may be the best choice.

3. Use an experienced local Real Estate Agent who also invests in real estate themselves. Investors learn about the pitfalls through first-hand experience, both the good and the bad, and you want that experience working for you as well.

Be prepared before buying any Real Estate Investment. There are some great books on this subject. If you would like to schedule time to review your investment strategy, I would be pleased to sit down with you.

4. Prospective properties should be inspected by a Professional Home Inspector. In addition, find a contractor who you can trust to give you the right advice for any minor repairs or renovations that may be required.

At the conclusion of our meeting, I will give you with one of these great books to continue your learning process on Investing in Real Estate. FLIP (How to Find, Fix, and Sell Houses for Profit) or HOLD (How to Find, Buy, and Rent Houses for Wealth).

5. Consult with your Accountant and Lawyer as to how you will take ownership of the property. There are some benefits in taking title in the name of a limited company. This could protect you against personal liability should someone get hurt on the property and for other tax planning purposes. However, you should consider that you will also have to pay incorporation fees and file a separate tax return each year for your company.

To set up an appointment call me Theresa Baird - Broker at Keller Williams Realty Solutions directly at 647-298-0997. **Tips for this article supplied by Mark Weisleder - Real Estate Author and Lawyer

6. Keep proper records of income and expenses for your investment property. It is not wise to mix your investment account with your personal bank account. It will become difficult to properly track when you have to file your year-end tax return, regardless whether you own the investment in your personal name or in a company name. 7. If you are buying with a partner, make sure you have a proper partnership or joint venture agreement to protect both of you, should things not work out as planned. In particular, provisions should be made if one of the partners wants to sell the investment and the other one doesn’t. Other potential problems could be if one partner is not paying their share of expenses or what happens if one of the partners dies. 8. Hire an experienced Property Manager or Realtor to assist you in finding suitable tenants. A Property Manager can deal with any ongoing maintenance, repairs or other complaints by tenants. You may not wish to be woken up in the middle of the night to handle emergency repairs. Budget an additional $100 per month for this service.

plan, since, they also had US citizenship and they were not familiar enough with the US tax and estate laws to adequately prepare one for them. Huh? Funny how, they did not offer to pay someone capable, reduce the monthly fees or of course suggest they go elsewhere with their investments.

Efficient Wealth Management has created a new coaching program called The Gratifying Harvest. The program helps you enjoy your future by carefully harvesting cash flow from your lifetime of savings or preparing you to do so. We thought a column devoted to this pleasing idea would be great. What about, what we need?

The second informed me that their large well known brokerage company’s advisor, did up a quick financial summary for them and said they had enough money and were fine. This without even being aware of the clients other assets held at other institutions. When asked about some estate planning, the advisor informed them (and I am paraphrasing from a second hand conversation), “Don’t bother. The people that do that for us are insurance advisors and you will just get a plan to buy insurance. You do not need any insurance!”

Three times this week, I was reminded that financial planning is very misunderstood, by both households and investment professionals alike. Not only is it misunderstood, it can also be a challenge to obtain financial planning if investment professionals dismiss it as unnecessary or compromise it with a continued focus on product sales. When is the investment community going to realize that there is value in good financial planning? When they do, maybe, they will even learn what financial planning really is and how to deliver it in an unbiased fashion.

Well at least they did not get sold some insurance they neither needed nor wanted. I am not sure I can sort out the advisor’s reasoning about no insurance though, since sometimes you want insurance for business, tax or estate planning purposes. It is not always needed but sometimes desired. It would also reduce the assets managed by the broker…hum!

Earlier this year, I was approached by two different prospective clients that were seeking some financial planning. I refused to help them. I thought I was doing them a favour by refusing their business. Both clearly needed financial, tax and estate planning, but since both had significant portfolios being managed by large investment firms, I suggested they go back to their investment advisors and obtain the services they needed. Fees are already too high across the industry and nothing is gained by paying twice to obtain the needed services, the advisors through their existing fees and then us for our time as well. In both cases these planning services were essential to do a proper job for these households, so we thought. It seemed right to send them back to whomever they were already paying substantial fees to.

Anyways, I can tell you that this client is very much in need of a complete comprehensive plan, given there is a small corporation, investments at multiple institutions, charitable giving plans, a diverse group of heirs and most important, a lack of comfort with how to deal with all the issues. Certainly, some education on why they are fine would have been an important start. Again, no offer to hire competent help, just the same high fees. Oh did I forget to mention? They are also dual US citizens with assets that were in the US but were moved to the brokerage account recently. I wish you could see my head shaking!!

Recently, I saw them both again. This is what they told me. The first informed me that their large well known national provider, involved in mutual funds and private client services could not provide them with a comprehensive financial

Lastly, an ominous warning from the July 12th issue of The Economist under the subtitle Investing in Retirement. Stating, “What to do with your money when you retire…a question that fascinates the financial-services industry, which would love to get its hands on people’s retirement pots.” Furthermore, “A pot is not a pension…the vast majority…will try to convert their pots into income... on which they will struggle to get independent advice (many intermediaries get paid more for selling higher-charging products).” The Economist finished with, “…translates into a licence to print money for the financial industry. What people need is truly disinterested advice (columnist note - as in unbiased), so they can pick inexpensive, diversified products to keep them in old age”.
