October 27th – Municipal Election Day On Monday, October 27th, voters across Ontario will be heading to the polls. In 2014, Ontarians will elect approximately 2800 council members and 700 school trustees across the province. Everyone who puts their name forward as a candidate and who casts a ballot makes a difference in their community. Why is it important to vote? The right to vote is a fundamental democratic right that is protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It is the cornerstone of democracy. When we vote, we choose the representatives who will make the laws and policies that govern how we live together. The legitimacy of a government lies in the fact that it is elected. While democracy involves much more than holding elections every four years, voting is a powerful way to send a message to governments and politicians. The more votes, the more powerful the message is. Every vote counts. Compared to other forms of political participation, voting does not require a lot of time or effort – in other words, it is one of the easiest ways to have a say in how your society is governed. Municipal government has a great impact on our day-to-day lives. City planning, public transit, parks and recreation facilities, economic development, roads, property taxes, fire services, municipal by-law and property adjustments are responsibilities of local council. Our local school boards manage our elementary and secondary education programs. All these responsibilities have a strong impact on our daily lives. The GTA faces many challenges moving forward. Take the time over the next few weeks to learn about the candidates, ask questions and be sure to vote on October 27th.

The 2014 Stars of South Mississauga Business Awards

4th Annual Diaper Drive

Awarding Excellence in the Community

By Lydia Ordóñez-Niles

By Lindsay Howe The 3rd Annual Stars of South Mississauga Business Awards will take place on Wednesday, October 15th at 7:00 p.m. The Stars of South Mississauga Business Awards celebrates extraordinary local businesses that are unique to Mississauga South and make our community a more vibrant place to live. The Stars of Mississauga South Awards is presented by the Port Credit and Clarkson Village BIA and the office of Mississauga South MPP Charles Sousa.

Did you know, that it can cost over $100 per month for an adequate supply of diapers for each baby/toddler? The 4th Annual Diaper Drive will be held from October 1st - 15th, 2014. Together, we can help cover the needs of our community’s littlest ones. Since organizing this diaper drive four years ago, I am delighted the awareness that it has brought to the community - diapers are a costly necessity. Plus the fact that we as a community have helped make hundreds of babies happy with dry bottoms. Over the years, many of the individuals that donated told me they were surprised how expensive diapers actually were, including me. This was the reason I started this diaper drive, having not been blessed with children, even I had no clue to the cost of a package of diapers.

The Port Credit BIA strongly values the entrepreneurial spirit of these businesses, and has a deep appreciation for the passion that drives them to work so hard day in and day out. Their leadership and commitment is the driving force behind growing our community and local economy. Small businesses are the backbone of our thriving village and the Stars of South Mississauga Business Awards takes the time to honour these worthy businesses for their outstanding community impact. Star Selection Each year members of the public are encouraged to nominate award-worthy local small businesses and submit their nominations through MPP Sousa’s constituency office. In conjunction with the Port Credit BIA and Clarkson BIA, an expert judging panel reviews the nominations and make the final selections. The panel includes representatives from the Ontario Business Improvement Area Association, City of Mississauga Economic Development and Mississauga Board of Trade. Stars are chosen in each of the following six categories: Green Business Excellence, Community Impact Excellence, Service Excellence, Hospitality Excellence, Rising Star, and Networking Excellence.

How does it work? From October 1st to the 15th, packaged diapers of all sizes, cash donations and baby wipes can be dropped off at Impressionable Gifts & Decor in Port Credit. For each package/donation, you will be given a ballot for an in-store draw. Once everything is collected, including the money donated, I will purchase the sizes that may be short of. My husband and I then sort out the sizes to be distributed evenly to three nonprofit organizations. The final step, I deliver them to Interim Place, Mississauga Life Centre and The Compass, which will make many, many babies and toddlers very happy. I would like to thank Cassandra Irving for the poster design and Lisa Vigliotta Photography for the professional photo, both these ladies have been on board with this project from day one. Most of all, thank you to those that have donated - for making this positive difference happen!

Congratulations to all the winners, as well as each of the 100+ local businesses nominated as Stars in our community! Your passion and perseverance makes our community shine!

Diapers can be dropped off to Impressionable Gifts & Decor, 74 Lakeshore Rd. E. in the heart of Port Credit from Tuesday to Sunday from October 1st to the 15th. For any questions regarding this project, please contact Lydia at 905-271-8999.

Amadio’s Pizza Serving the Port Credit Community for Over 20 Years By Lindsay Howe Amadio’s Pizza is Port Credit’s award-winning Classic Italian Style Pizzeria, offering the freshest hand-made, stone baked pizzas in the village!

Amadio’s pizzas are prepared fresh daily in their open kitchen (including their trans fat-free dough). Amadio’s Pizza is dedicated to customer satisfaction. Their pizzas are customizable and made just the way you want. Pick from their large selection of toppings to create your perfect pizza, or choose from their classic pizza combinations from Deluxe, Hawaiian, Vegetarian, Canadian or Meat Lovers. About Amadio’s Pizza Celebrating 25 successful years in business, Amadio’s Pizza is renowned in the village for their delicious homemade pizzas and the quality service they provide. Owner Joe Leroux provides only the freshest and finest ingredients he can get his hands on. Amadio’s vine ripened tomatoes for example are picked first thing in the morning from the fields of California, canned and shipped, ready to be used by the afternoon. When making pizzas, consistency is extremely important to Leroux and his team of chefs. Each ingredient that goes on a pizza is weighed on a scale so that the finished product is always the same, which happens to be just how his customers like it. Leroux started making pizza at a young age and has been perfecting the art for over 40 years! Amadio’s Pizza first opened in Cooksville in 1990 before moving to Port Credit in 1993. In 2006, Amadio’s moved to its current location at 360 Revus Avenue in Port Credit. Awards and Recognition Amadio’s is the only independent pizzeria to be nominated for the Best Pizza in Mississauga by the Reader’s Choice Awards for EIGHT years in a row. In 2009, Amadio’s won Platinum, in 2010, 2011, 2012 Gold, 2013 and 2014 they were the Silver Winner. In 2010, Amadio’s won the Bronze Medal for the Best Pizza in the GTA from the Toronto Star. In 2011, Amadio’s was the Winner of the Canadian Pizza with Purpose Award. Amadio’s Pizza sends a sincere thank you to all their valued customers for their votes and support. This year Leroux is also one of the Finalists for the Canadian Pizza Chef of the Year and will be competing with 12 top chefs at the Canadian Pizza Show held annually at the International Centre. Giving Back to the Community Joe’s gratitude and appreciation towards the community is shown in the way that he generously gives back to the community. This popular pizzeria does a lot of work behind the scenes, providing generous food donations to several foundations, churches and organizations across the village including raising $3002.00 for the local Christmas Food Drive. Additionally, Amadio’s has been supporting the Tim Hortons Southside Shuffle Blues and Jazz Festival since day one. Amadio’s is known in the community for supporting many charitable functions with silent auction coupons and discounted pizzas. Leroux’s philosophy is that what is good for the community is also good for Amadio’s. With each donation made, Joe continues to builds good will in the community, enhance customer loyalty, and even increase overall sales. Amadio’s guarantees home-made goodness. Visit Amadio’s Pizza and taste the difference quality makes. Amadio’s is located at 360 Revus Avenue in Port Credit. Place your order by phone at 905-891-5500 or online by visiting www.amadiospizza. com.

Port Credit: Shop Here First!

Recycling the Gift of Sight

By Theresa Baird - Director of Port Credit Living 647-298-0997 tbaird@tbaird.com

By Silvia Yeomans, Queen Spectacle

Port Credit is a creative waterfront community with neighbourhood character, walkable urbanism, restaurants and entertainment. Port Credit is part of the GTA which is the 3rd largest central business district and the fastest growing region in North America.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says there are over 153 million people who have uncorrected refractive errors (people who are near sighted, far sighted and with astigmatism). Those people can easily be treated with vision correction. Not being able to learn or read, millions are forced further into poverty simply because they don’t have glasses. We could definitely put an end to that!

To prosper as a community, the local businesses that support the Village of Port Credit need to be supported to continue to grow and flourish. During the month of October, you can participate in many events that will not only help your small business but by your attendance, will assist your neighbouring small businesses as well.

It’s always recommended that you have a backup pair of eyeglasses and sunglasses, but a drawer full of unused glasses is what we want. Any used single vision, bifocal, trifocal, progressive, safety glasses and prescription or nonprescription sunglasses are needed. Children’s glasses are always necessary. Children are able to achieve a better education with glasses. Glasses provide easier learning and healthier development. For adults, glasses offer them better opportunities with employment and economic strength. For seniors it gives them more independence. As a community, we can make a difference. Queen Spectacle has collected thousands of used glasses for Lions Club International. Taking donations from the different collection points such as ours, Lions Club International has partnered with WHO to provide glasses globally to underdeveloped areas and also provide 45 children’s blindness centres in 35 countries for the preservation, restoration and rehabilitation of sight in children. Join us in doing our part. Bring any of your old glasses and pass them along. Let’s work together, and recycle the gift of sight!

While reintroducing our local interactive community website www. PortCreditLiving.com to many businesses this past month, we also encouraged all of our shop owners to support where you work - buy flowers at the flower shop, purchase groceries at the town’s grocery stores, frequent the restaurants for luncheons here in the Port Credit Village, before commuting home. Step outside your door and take a look around! Our goal as a community can be to work together to network and support each other’s business. If support is offered between shop owners, your community and neighbourhood will thrive! Our Port Credit Living website is set up to help with your awareness of what the locals are up to and help your neighbourhood know a little more about you.

Silvia Yeomans is the owner of Queen Spectacle. Queen Spectacle has locations in Streetsville, Port Credit and The Kingsway. They are a Full Eye Care Team recognized for their service excellence. For more information visit their website, www.queenspectacle.com

Go to www.PortCreditLiving.com and post what your business has to offer on our main calendar. It’s a FREE service so Why not! By doing so, you will also see what your local neighbouring businesses are offering at their establishments. If you have a workshop coming up, post it! If you created a big promotion at your restaurant, share it! To further enhance and promote your business, list it under the Local Business Page with the purchase of a two year listing. The www.PortCreditLiving.com calendar also highlights many of the networking series of events such as the BIA Breakfast event, for small businesses, and back again this year by popular demand is the Shop the Hood event in November. Port Credit offers plenty of natural environments along the Lake and Credit River Valley with fishing, boating and simply relaxing along the waterfront a local pastime. With neighbourhood character, many are considering Port Credit a place to live, work, study and visit. Check out www.PortCreditLiving.com, to see what’s happening, shop and dine and discover the Village of Port Credit.

Our City, Our Time: Bonnie Crombie’s Vision for Mississauga By Bonnie Crombie

ELEC

ION 201T4

This election is about the future and it is about the next chapter of the Mississauga story.

My platform, Our City, Our Time! Is a bold vision for our city that is built on 6 pillars:

We have enjoyed tremendous leadership under Hazel McCallion who has led our city for the past 36 years. However, with her retirement this year, we have an opportunity to build on her legacy and choose the future direction of Mississauga.

A City that Thrives through economic growth and job creation; a City that Moves through a regionally integrated rapid transit network; a City that Grows responsibly and intelligently to create livable, walkable communities; a City that Shines through a vibrant and diverse arts and culture scene; a City that Cares by ensuring all residents have an equal opportunity for success, including our older adults and those struggling to make ends meet; and most importantly, a City that Works, for you by keeping taxes low and fostering a culture of customer service at City Hall.

I am running for Mayor because I am passionate about our city. It is where my husband and I have chosen to live, work and raise our family. As a daughter of Polish and Ukrainian immigrants I understand the challenge that many Mississauga residents face and the needs of our community. Prior to entering politics, I had a 20 year career in business. I worked in management for two, Fortune 500 companies – the Walt Disney Company and McDonald’s Corporation - and started a successful small business. I’ve also been privileged to represent close to one-third of Mississauga’s residents as the Member of Parliament for Mississauga-Streetsville and currently as the City Councillor for Ward 5. My experience has taught me to work hard, respect the value of a dollar, and how to deliver results for a bottom line and for my community. We have built a city that works. Yes, there are improvements to be made, but I think we can all agree that Mississauga is a dynamic, diverse and vibrant city that has so much potential - potential that I want to tap in and use to move us forward. To do this we need a bold vision and a plan of action to match. I have both.

This is our city and our future. On October 27, I hope I can count on your support. Together, we can build a great city. Will you join me?

Mississauga is a Big City with the Heart of a Village By Steve Mahoney Mississauga has come a long way in its short history. Born out of the thriving, historic villages of Clarkson, Cooksville, Dixie, Erindale, Malton, Meadowvale Village, Port Credit and Streetsville, our City has grown to become Canada’s sixth largest and a place where people from all over the world come to live.

and active neighbourhoods, and that good developments get built and fewer matters go through the expensive Ontario Municipal Board process. 3. Expanding Business Improvement Areas to other parts of the City: Mississauga is home to four successful BIAs – Port Credit, Streetsville, Malton, and Clarkson - that play an important role in the strength of our villages. I will work with Council and existing BIAs to try to expand the BIA concept to other areas of our City.

Mississauga has grown and prospered under the steady leadership of Mayor McCallion. With her retirement from office, she is entrusting her successor with a strong foundation on which to build an even stronger Mississauga.

I believe that Mississauga is a big city with the heart of a village. It is this heart that makes Mississauga such a great place to live, work, and raise a family. If I am privileged enough to be elected your mayor, I will make sure we never lose this character.

I am running for mayor because I have the experience and plan to build on the foundation being left to us by Mayor McCallion. I am committed to keeping Mississauga affordable, investing in our downtown and waterfront, supporting our small businesses, and building stronger villages and neighbourhoods across the City. My plan to build stronger villages and neighbourhoods is laid out in my Blueprint for an Even Stronger Mississauga. As mayor, I am proposing to build stronger villages and neighbourhoods by: 1. Supporting residents in building their neighbourhoods and villages: I will work with Council to set aside $50,000 annually to establish the Heart of a Village Micro Grants Program. This program would provide small matching grants to support neighbourhood groups and/or placebased grassroots initiatives that promote local arts, cultural expression, and civic pride. 2. Appointing a Mississauga Community Development Facilitator: I will work with Council to appoint a Community Development Facilitator whose job it would be to work with residents, developers, and community based organizations to ensure that development supports more livable

For the first time in thirty-six years we will be voting for a new Mayor, a historic change. Oh, Happy Dazed and Confused By Ric Cooper, Ric’s Recollections I thought I was having a psychotic reaction, but no, I checked the calendar and confirmed that summer was over. Time to pack away the patio lanterns, no more twisting by the pool, all the leaves must fall and soon I’ll be California dreaming. Seems like only yesterday we were up on the waterfront, singing Oh Canada, crying tears of a clown for the benefit of Mr. Kite and dancing in the streets doing the Harlem shuffle. Oh happy days they were, even though it wasn’t really that great weatherwise. I don’t think it ever got to 98.6 and working on my tan wasn’t easy living but hey, I will survive. Most of my candles in the rain got soaked and sometimes I wondered who’ll stop the rain? If you were down in the park on Friday night of the Southside Shuffle, you know what I mean. Windy wasn’t the only word, I got soaked bad to the bone. Saturday in the park was amazing and we certainly had a pleasant valley Sunday. Ah, Port Credit, so much to do in the summertime that even if you’re out for a lazy stroll on the boardwalk, you can’t help but be happy to live and work here. Hats off to the stranger, hope we’ll meet again so we can cherish our memories of good times. Some people say that autumn is their favourite season with beautiful fall colours and a bountiful harvest of vegs available at our local farmers market, I can see clearly now what they mean but I find it a bit depressing. It means that a hazy shade of winter is just around the corner. Yesterday I got out of bed, dragged a comb across my head and got a sweater out for the first time in months. Longer evenings do have their benefit. More time to listen to the music! Like a spinning wheel the turntables will start roaring back to life as many of us will be spending more time indoors once again.

$1 from each ticket goes to the Legion Poppy Fund

Record companies are already planning and pressing product for what they hope will be a very busy season. “New” releases by The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd will be vying for space on our shelves and rumours have it that the actual pressing plants are working overtime and cannot keep up with demand for vinyl albums. We can’t forget black Friday either. It has morphed into a sort of Record Store Day part 2 with literally hundreds of releases coming out. Many of those will be strictly limited editions and will become instant collector’s items. In the next article I’ll try to highlight some notable new releases and some “hot” titles. Till then, keep spinnin’ your vinyl and try to support all of our local merchants and businesses here in Port Credit. I read on facebook recently that an acquaintance was disappointed shopping on Amazon. Well, welcome to the jungle baby! PS. You may have noticed that the above article references song titles and or lyrics. The first three people that get the correct number of references will receive a $20 in-store credit.

Pretty in Pink By Vanig Jelilian, Lorne Park Jewellers Since the 1500’s or the 15th century, Tourmaline as a gem has become popular as Europeans discovered this gem in South America. India and Cylon (now called Sri Lanka) found interest in this beautiful gem and it became part of designing jewellery in gold and silver. October babies celebrate their month with pink tourmaline and the iridescent opal. Is it a pink tourmaline, pink sapphire or pink diamond? Early gem traders went by colour. Pink tourmaline may be mistaken for pink sapphire; green tourmaline as an emerald and so on. Pink sapphires are stronger and longer lasting. Second to diamonds in hardness! Remember the Pink Panther? We rarely find pink diamonds for less than $10,000. Ladies seeking a pink diamond engagement ring will select the pink sapphire. Pink sapphires are also rare and more valuable than other colours of fancy sapphires such as yellow, green and violet. Pink sapphires are stunning and a good alternative to pink diamonds. They range in colour from pale to hot pink. At Lorne Park Jewellers, each pink sapphire has been graded by our Certified Gemologist. You can be pretty in pink too! We recommend the exquisite, hypnotic and breathtaking pink sapphire. For more information on pearls and other precious stones, contact Lorne Park Jewellers at 905-891-0001 or visit www.lorneparkjewellers.ca.

Real Estate Update - The Last Full Month of Summer ends on a high note By Theresa Baird - Broker Keller Williams Realty Solutions Toronto Real Estate Board President Paul Etherington reported 7,600 sales through the Toronto MLS system in August 2014. This result was up by 2.8 per cent compared to 7,391 transactions reported in August 2013. Year-to-date sales through the end of August amounted to 65,454, which represented an increase of 6.5 per cent compared to the same period in 2013. “The last full month of summer ended on a high note. As we look toward the fall market, I expect that demand for ownership housing will remain strong. Home buyers will continue to benefit from a diversity of affordable home ownership opportunities throughout the GTA. The fact that sales were up for all major home types in August suggests that first-time buyers and existing home owners remain very active in today’s marketplace,” said Mr. Etherington. The average selling price in August 2014 was $546,303 – up 8.9 per cent in comparison to the average of $501,677 reported in August 2013. The year-to-date average price through August was $562,504, which represented an increase of 8.5 per cent in comparison to the same period in 2013. “The number of listings in August was down in comparison to last year, while the number of sales increased. This means that sellers’ market conditions remained in place with a lot of competition between buyers. This is why we continued to see strong price growth last month. Looking forward, if sales growth continues to outstrip listings growth, the average selling price should continue to increase on a yearover-year basis,” said Jason Mercer, TREB’s Director of Market Analysis. In other words, achieve good investment returns AND receive fair value for the services provided. Costs do matter!

allocation, a dynamic withdrawal strategy, incorporating guaranteed income products (i.e., annuities), tax-efficient decisions, and liability-relative asset allocation optimization. We estimate a retiree can expect to generate 29% more income on a “utility-adjusted” basis using a Gamma-efficient retirement income … This additional income is equivalent to an annual arithmetic return increase of +1.82% … which represents a significant improvement in portfolio efficiency for a retiree. Unlike traditional alpha, which can be hard to predict, we find that … can be achieved by anyone following an efficient financial planning strategy.”

What does Certified Financial Planner actually do? CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, are experts in comprehensive financial planning. They help people with cash flow analysis and budgeting, goal planning, debt management, insurance and risk management to protect your income and dependants, employer contributory pension plan or group RSP allocations, estate planning, taxes, career, life planning, college and university funding, buying a home, retirement projections and anything else that comes along. No magic, just math supported by broad experience. Sometimes, they are simply answering, “Do I (we) have enough”? Maybe, “How much can I afford to give the kids”?

So what are intelligent financial planning decisions a Certified Financial Planner help me with? Let’s see. 1) a total wealth framework to determine the optimal asset allocation Your current advisor or bank asks you to answer an investment questionnaire and then discusses it with you. This is an attempt to establish risk tolerance and risk preference (i.e., an investor’s aversion to or comfort with risk). This however ignores your risk capacity (i.e., an investor’s ability to assume risk). Asset allocation should be based on a combination of risk preference and risk capacity, and primarily risk capacity. The only way to establish risk capacity is through a thorough examination of your total financial picture. A review of assets, liabilities, current spending and future spending expectations, income sources both now and in the future, etc. In other words, a full financial review of the persons involved. Commonly called a financial plan.

However, the first question to the financial planner is often about the investments. An experienced planner should stop you and make it very clear that it is the comprehensive financial planning that will lead any relationship. As such, we will charge fees for this advice and expertise just like any consultant in a specialized field. Advice for a Fee based on a specific area of expertise. We coach, manage and guide our clients. We get paid based on the advice and the guidance and help in controlling the client’s emotions. This is why they hire us. There’s no ambiguity and that is our point. We work hard at telling all that we meet that financial planning is not investment planning and is very important in its own right.

2) a dynamic withdrawal strategy You probably are contemplating a static withdrawal strategy. An amount based on 4% of assets adjusted for inflation each year is very common. The future will not be steady and unwavering, so why should the withdrawals. Your withdrawal plan should be adjustable to the future realities, not the past plans.

It gets confusing because most financial planner also help with client’s investment management to some degree. Although it is not mandatory that they use their financial planner as their investment manager, it does make sense and is often the best value proposition. Since the planner has the most intimate understanding of their personal finances, they can provide them with investment advice and management that fits with their overall strategy. But again this is a separate area not covered in the basic financial planning and should be treated as such.

3) incorporating guaranteed income products (i.e., annuities) The key here is risk shifting or hedging your risk. Annuities and other guaranteed products (such as long term GICs) place the future performance worries onto the provider of the product and remove the risk from you.

Investment management is certainly a different skillset than cash flow and retirement planning and it’s important to separate one from the other. Your investment advisor should provide services like risk education, determine risk tolerance – both ability and willingness, manager selection, investment selection, portfolio design, asset allocation and investment management (rebalancing, market analysis, portfolio analysis). Certainly investment management is related to financial planning but is distinct from it.

4) tax-efficient decisions You should hold assets in the accounts that are the most tax wise for those types of investments. Ensure that your withdrawal strategy is also generating income in the most beneficial manner. It is not just about this year. A good goal is to lower your lifetime total tax bill to the lowest possible amount. Access to a skilled tax consultant is essential. 5) liability-relative asset allocation optimization The risk associated with currencies, inflation and timing of withdrawals as they relate to the future are an important part of establishing the optimal portfolio allocation.

We believe strongly that investment management should not be commenced without financial planning. It is unfortunate that it is investment management; and primarily investment or manager selection, that drives most relationships between clients and advisors. Clients incorrectly believe they should just seek to make more money on their investments and focuses here. In September 2012, Morningstar, a very large service provider to the investment community, published a research paper titled Alpha, Beta, and Now…Gamma. This paper proposed that it is not investment/manager selection that has the greatest impact on retirement portfolios; rather it is making more intelligent financial planning decisions. At Efficient Wealth Management, we have been promoting the exact same five ideas for over ten years with a passion and it is gratifying to read such strong support for our financial planning focus.

Gordon is the Vice President – Financial Planning at Efficient Wealth Management Inc., a leader in cost efficient financial planning. He has taught at local colleges in both Financial Services and Accounting areas. He is also a frequent guest on television and has written numerous articles on investing and financial planning. See our ad “the Harvest is under way!” in this issue. We are money coaches. We created a new coaching program called The Gratifying Harvest. The program helps you enjoy your future by carefully harvesting cash flow from your lifetime of savings or preparing you to do so. The Gratifying Harvest is an advanced program that takes everything to a much higher level and is only available from Efficient Wealth Management.

The research paper attempts to “… quantify the additional expected retirement income achieved by an individual investor from making more intelligent financial planning decisions … we focus on five fundamental financial planning decisions/techniques: a total wealth framework to determine the optimal asset
