The 10th anniversary of Port Credit’s Busker Fest is just around the corner!

This spectacular three-day festival is happening August 21st to 23rd.

On Friday, the night kicks off at 7:00 p.m. and runs to 11:00 p.m., Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. and wraps up on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Buskers will be performing incredible acts to showcase their sheer talent and leave their audiences in awe. Brace yourself for an array of talented buskers on the village streets. Attendees can expect 10 performance areas featuring more than 40 international performers. Visit Busker Fest to witness the astonishing lineup of awe-inspiring buskers right before your very eyes!

In honour of its 10th anniversary, the Port Credit BIA is putting on an action packed, unforgettable experience for residents and visitors in the community. In addition to 6 brand new acts, your all time favourites will be returning to Busker Fest. Past favourites include: USA Break Dancers, Peter Rabbit, Alakazam, Dream State Circus, Wacky Chad, Rob Roy Collins and many more! You can also expect a wide variety of food and artisan vendors, an inflatable village, face painting and henna artists.

Busker Fest 10th Anniversary continued from front cover Special 10th Anniversary Happenings In honour of its 10th anniversary, Port Credit’s most electrifying festival has made even more exciting additions to the bill. First off, there will be more strolling and statue performers than ever before! Watch for this year’s lineup of animated characters situated at various locations, roaming around the festival and capturing the attention of each spectator. This year, Busker Fest is holding a performance area (pitch) at Hurontario. Here you can witness the featured 10th anniversary act: the infamous Catwall acrobats from Quebec. The Catwall by Circus Concepts are world-class double trampoline artists.

Meanwhile, younger children can participate in Buskerbop at Port Street Market (Village Square). This kids’ area will feature a stage with interactive acts, entertainment and activities they will love! The fun includes juggling workshops, balloon sculptors, bubbles, clowns, stage shows and puppet shows. Buskerbop takes place on Saturday and Sunday from 1:00p.m. to 6:00p.m. For both areas, please note that your child must be accompanied by an adult.

Young Buskers in Training: Fun for Kids Busker Fest is a family-friendly event you won’t want to miss! Now your children can take part in all the action, with new just for kids areas featuring a range of interactive, child-centered activities. To the delight of the children, Busker Academy returns, giving kids ages six and up the opportunity to learn the tricks of the trade. Busker Fest Academy will take place on Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at the gazebo in Memorial Park. Workshops will teach your children amazing stunts such as stilt and tight rope walking, making balloon animals and miming.

The Unbelievable Xtreme Finale Busker Fest’s Xtreme Finale takes place on Sunday, August 23rd at 6:30 p.m. The Xtreme Finale is a culmination of performers in one big fabulous show. These gutsy street performers will team up to perform magnificent stunts, each act more enthralling than the next! Busker Fest is holding a People’s Choice contest, sponsored by RJ Entertainment Publishing. Vote for your favorite 2015 Busker Fest Act and the winning act will receive an invite back to Port Credit Busker Fest 2016. Fill out a ballot at any of the pitch areas.

Canned Heat headlines Southside Shuffle and celebrates 50 years on the road Canned Heat, the famous band that zoomed to world-wide fame after performing at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and the Woodstock Music and Art Fair in 1969, is coming to Port Credit to headline this year’s Southside Shuffle, Canada’s premier blues and jazz festival. This year’s festival will be held September 11 – 13, 2015.

This popular boogie-blues band formed in Los Angeles in 1965 and this year celebrates a 50th anniversary.

“We are so excited to have Canned Heat as part of our line-up this year, especially as the band celebrates this milestone anniversary,” said festival founder Chuck Jackson, the legendary blues singer with The Downchild Blues Band.

As with many bands who enjoy longevity, Canned Heat has seen its fair share of tragedies over the years, including the death of two co-founders, Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson in 1970 and Bob “The Bear” Hite in 1981. The band continued though with a revolving door of musicians including the late Henry Vestine, Ronnie Baron, Walter Trout and Junior Watson. In the 1990s, Canned Heat’s original manager from the 1960s, Skip Taylor, returned to the fold, and he brought together the original three who played Woodstock – drummer Adolfo “Fito” de la Parra, bassist Larry Taylor and guitarist Harvey Mandel. Sadly, Mandel has been battling cancer and undergone a number of surgeries. He is now cancer-free, and the band hopes for his return. But meanwhile, Canned Heat welcomed back another band veteran, guitarist John “JP” Paulus, who played bass for John Mayal.

Canned Heat performs on the Sab Memorial Stage, sponsored by Heath & Sherwood, on Saturday, September 12 at 11 p.m. Other acts who will perform on the four Main Stages during the weekend of festivities include Bobby Rush Big Band, The Johnny Max Band, Danny Marks, Susie Vinnick, Kenny Blues Boss Wayne, Cheryl Lescom and the Tucson Choir Boys, and of course, the Juno award-winning Downchild Blues Band, who will wrap up the festival on Sunday, September 13 at 6 p.m.

Keep Calm and Yarn Bomb Yarn bombing is the creation of whimsical, knitted or crocheted art usually displayed in a public place. Knitted contributions are being accepted until August 14th at the Port Credit BIA office.

You can get involved by knitting a square, make a pompom, crochet some flowers or let your imagination go wild! Join in for a celebration of creativity and community. All usable knitted squares will be donated to a local animal shelter afterwards.

25th Port Credit Boat Show September 18-20, 2015 The Port Credit In-Water Boat Show celebrates its 25th year at the Port Credit Harbour Marina – September 18-20. The only show of its kind on Lake Ontario, the Port Credit Boat Show is THE late season boat show to attend. Besides over 100 new and used power and sailboats and the numerous land displays of marine accessories and services there are a few new events for this year’s show.

The Port Credit Boat Show is held at the Port Credit Harbour Marina which is easily accessible by car, transit or boat.

Show hours are Friday, September 18 from 10 am -7 pm; Saturday, September 19 from 10 am – 6 pm and Sunday, September 20 from 10 am-5 pm.

COMMUNITY CORNER Doors Open 2015 At the only scheduled location within the GTA, Heritage Mississauga is pleased to present Canadigm’s “Souterrain Impressions”, a cross-Canada art exhibition of 3-D reproductions of the chalk carvings of regimental badges and messages to family, done in the caves of Vimy Ridge during the First World War in 1917.

Port Credit Concert Series The Port Credit Concert Series returns this fall with three great shows at The Riverview Room, 35 Front Street North, in Port Credit. The fall season kicks off with The Weber Brothers on Friday, September 25th, Blackburn on Saturday, October 31st and Tad Robinson on Friday, November 20th.

Doors open at 7pm and the show start at 8pm. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. All Blackburn concerts with reserved seating.

Carvings completed by heroes like Pte. Oscar Green, a veteran of No.2 Company who raised the alarm and fought a German combat unit armed with only “a broken rifle, minus bolt and bayonet”; Pte. Green was stabbed “a dozen times with German bayonets”, finally succumbing to a gunshot wound to the head on August 15, 1917. Although originally born in Finland, this 31 year old blue eyed man gave his life fighting for the Canadian Forces at Vimy. Pte. Green paid the ultimate price for peace and as he waited in the subterranean world below the battlefield, he carved his regimental badge both as a way to pass the time but also in pride and memory of his fellow brothers in arms.

The exhibition also includes other carvings and images of the cave systems at Vimy and the story of Canadigm’s work in developing the exhibition.

Working in conjunction with The Durand Group, a British organization, Zenon Andrusyszyn and Stephen Weed from Canadigm have worked tirelessly with a number of volunteers to bring this exhibit to Canada.

Heritage Mississauga has also been fortunate to secure grant monies from the Community Foundation of Mississauga which has allowed them to bring this free exhibit to the community.

Come and see these incredible carvings and stories, at this unique exhibit at the Stonebrook Condominium Sales Centre, 2007 Lakeshore Rd West.

A perfect spring day was the appropriate backdrop at the Official Ground Breaking Ceremony for one of the GTA’s most successful condominium projects, The Craftsman Condominium Residences, being developed by VANDYK group of companies in the quaint Village of Clarkson in Mississauga.

I don’t want your fitness results to disappear before you return home. Keep reading for my 2 simple steps to avoid the dreaded vacation fat trap.

There are plenty of strategies and techniques out there for staying fit on vacation, but most are fairly complicated. I’m not going to give you a list of 50 tips to remember in order to avoid those “extra” vacation pounds – you are getting away to relax, after all! I’ll keep this simple and effective.

The following 2 steps are all that you need to take with you on your vacation to ensure that you come back looking and feeling amazing.

Step #1: The 1/3 Rule Most vacation pounds are gained as a result of constant indulgence. Each meal becomes an opportunity to eat your heart out to the tune of “I’m on vacation!”

Look, I get that you’re on vacation and want to enjoy the richer tastes of life, but doing so at every meal is going to do a lot of damage to your waistline.

Rather than indulging constantly, I want you to adopt the 1/3 Rule. This means that only 1/3 of your meals ought to be eaten with the mindset of “I’m on vacation.” At this one meal each day you are allowed to eat things that are normally off-limits. Enjoy your favorites and do so guilt-free.

Expect the Unexpected

By Theresa Baird, Realtor, Keller Williams Realty Solutions While celebrating a recent closing for a client, mortgage broker Viera Kononenkova and I were discussing some of the unfortunate situations that our clients have experienced before meeting with us.

Here is one of those stories.

the two closings and she had no funds to close the purchase. In a panic she ran to her bank, where she had been a client for over 40 years. She was quickly turned down by the banker who knew her well. He told her she would not qualify for a bridge loan, because she was not taking out a new mortgage. And, she didn’t qualify for any new mortgage anyway because she has no qualified income to carry the debt.

This is Ann’s story. But it could be Peter’s, Mary’s or … yours.

Ann was living happy life, she was well off and her kids had all left the nest and were all doing well. Ann husband had passed but with both her and her husband’s pension, it was enough to pay the bills, and even travel with friends. For the past 10 years, Ann had been debt free! Her only dilemma was the big house that was once full of voices, was now just a labour camp with never ending cleaning, yard work and repairs. Most of her girlfriends had already moved into smaller places and she was yearning for the same lifestyle.

That is how Viera met her new client Ann. The lawyer and Viera worked carefully together to help to save the situation and to find the funds to close the condo purchase. Luckily, Viera managed to find the solution. It wasn’t the most ideal situation, but it got the deal on both sides closed.

Just like trying to save stew as it is burning, it is always wiser to turn the heat down and watch it carefully and do it right from the beginning.

Most of us will buy a house and have a mortgage at some point in our lives.

Mortgage rules and selling a home in today’s market have changed dramatically over the past several years. If you were a serious runner who has not been out of jogging for the past 10-15 years, you would likely take some training before you would consider signing up for a 10 km or a marathon again. The same holds true when re-entering the housing and mortgage markets. Sitting down with a Mortgage Broker and a Realtor can make the whole process of buying and selling stress free.

Well if luck would have you, she was visiting a friend who lived in a condo building that she had liked and she noticed a “Condo for Sale” advertisement on the board in the lobby. This was it, what luck she thought. She called the real estate agent on the listing and within a day she had a signed a purchase agreement for the full asking price. The agent had told her to act quickly or she may miss the opportunity. She did and Ann’s moving date was in less than a month.

Ann’s home was on a beautiful street. While the house was in good shape, she hadn’t made any changes to it in years. A few things were tired and the roof needed replacing, but the only thoughts on her mind were the new condo she had just purchased. Ann had noticed there were quite a few “For Sale” signs in her area. One name was more frequent than most so she thought, “This guy must be good. Lots of people seems to be listing with him.” After a brief phone call, he was in her house and all the paperwork was signed. The house was sold the day before she was to take possession of the condo and sold for less than she thought it might sell for.

Following these steps could make your life easier, save a lot of headaches and get you where you want to be in the shortest amount of time.

1. Find a good Mortgage Broker or a person at your bank you trust to guide you with what you need to know for your own personal circumstance.

2. Find a Realtor who you can trust and can understand what your objectives are. A good Realtor can handle both your purchase and the sale of your home and can easily help you manage the closing dates to work for your personal circumstances.

Everything had happened so fast! She was not happy, nor unhappy. She was just numb. It was like an avalanche about to fall on her. She wondered why she had reacted so fast.

MP Stella Ambler announces important investments through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program

An Evening of Led Zeppelin Live in the Houses of the Holy Michael White & The White feasturing St. Stephens, First United & Korean Children’s Choirs

MP Stella Ambler (Mississauga South), on behalf of the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), announced on July 30th that The Small Arms Building will receive funding through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program. She was joined by Councillor Jim Tovey, Ward 1, City of Mississauga.

Led Zeppelin’s music will echo through the high ceilings of one of Port Credit’s ‘Houses Of The Holy’, when Michael White & The White bring the sounds of Zeppelin to First United Church on October 17th. The show will feature two classic albums (Led Zeppelin 1 & 2) performed in their entirety plus three local youth choirs as well, incorporating an incredible multimedia visual extravaganza on a big screen backdrop. This classic rock live concert will have even the most ardent Led Zeppelin fans cheering for more.

The Conservative Government has approved up to $100,000 for a total project cost of up to $3,200,000 for the future restoration of the historic Small Arms Building. The restoration is intended to create a dynamic mixed-use space, providing for a unique combination of office, studio and community occupancies with an emphasis on promoting culture, heritage, scientific research and small business opportunities.

Performing in churches with youth choirs and orchestras is an idea that occurred to Mr. White several years ago. In 2007 the band started performing with well-known orchestras such as the Vancouver Symphony and the Richmond Hill Philharmonic. At that time, he thought about how playing Led Zeppelin songs such as ‘Stairway to Heaven’ in a church would be an interesting concept. The St. Stephens, First United & Korean Children’s Choirs will sing with the band on songs such as Your Time Is Gonna Come, Thank You and more.

This announcement is one of many for projects approved through the Program that will improve and preserve community spaces across southern Ontario, with the aim of giving back to Canadians and creating a lasting legacy as Canada prepared to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017. The Program is expected to boost economic activity through infrastructure investments, build community-based partnerships and modernize existing community facilities.

After Beatlemania, The White was the first musical group to be known as a tribute band. Mr. White formed the The White in 1977. Since then, the group has played over 5,000 shows to over a million fans around the world.

Although he has been performing Led Zeppelin’s music for so many years, Mr. White doesn’t get tired of it. “I love it,” he said. “The music is as vital today as it ever was.” At one recent show in particular, Mr. White said three generations attended together.

“The Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program will help preserve and restore this very special piece of history in South Mississauga, so that Canadians and their families can enjoy and appreciate the unique heritage and cultural significance of this great place, the Small Arms Building. I am delighted to see my community benefit from this program,” said Stella Ambler, Member of Parliament for Mississauga South.

A Long Branch based musician, Mr. White is no stranger to Port Credit, having performed many times in the community in the 1980s and 1990s.

Michael White & The White are currently the resident band at The Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto where they perform each month. Each concert enacts one of Led Zeppelin’s 10 studio albums in what the band calls its Discography Series. He is also the leader of the Q107 House Band that performs on the morning show with John Derringer.

“This national investment will help us move closer to further unleashing the potential of Mississauga’s Lakeview neighbourhood as a dynamic, thriving and inviting community, to both live and work with an unrivaled quality of life. I congratulate Councillor Jim Tovey, MP Ambler and everyone involved who worked to secure this new funding opportunity that will benefit all Mississaugans,” said Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie.

Our community takes great pride in the contributions Lakeview has made to the rich history of Canada. We have been home to Canada’s first airport, the Lorne Scots Regiment and in WWII, the Small Arms Factory. Sixteen thousand Canadian women worked at the Small Arms to support our troops and preserve the freedoms we enjoy today. This generous grant by the Canada 150 Fund will allow us to celebrate this incredible heritage and begin repurposing the building as a centre for Arts, Heritage, Culture and Science,” said Mississauga City Councillor Jim Tovey of Ward 1.

I recently shared this picture on our social media sites and got an interesting response.

Materials: 1 Skein of Blueface Leicester 1pair 4.5 mm needles

(This is from the Ishihara’s Colour –Deficiency Tests. The number below is 42). It is part of a test done by an optometrist to check for colour deficiency. It was surprising to see how many people missed part or all of the number.

Did you know that colour deficiency affects 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women? Most colour deficient people see images just as clearly as the rest of us, they just don’t see the red, green and blue light spectrums the same way.

The human eye has photoreceptors that sit on the retina at the back of the eye and send messages to the brain. There are two types; rods and cones. The rods are sensitive to light and the cones pick up colour.

Each of the cones carries one of three different photoreceptors; red, green or blue.

With 4.5 mm and thumb method cast on 38 sts and knit one row this will give you a knit ridge on the right side. Work in stocking st starting with a knit row for 20 rows. Next row: K4, k2tog, *k7,k2tog*, repeat between *’s to last 5 sts, k5. Continue in stocking st until piece measures 4”. Both hands are done the same to this point.

Mixing together the information received by all the different cones is what allows us to see the colours around us. When there is a malfunction, it changes the way the colour is perceived. For the number below, some people may not see the 4 or the 2 and for some, they may not see the entire 42.

Colour deficiency is usually genetically caused and sometimes it is linked to some diseases such as diabetes and multiple sclerosis. Some have it develop with age or as a result of different medications.

Blues Rock, rockin’ the blues

By Ric Cooper, Ric’s Recollection There is no other genre of music that owes a debt of gratitude to blues other than classic rock. I’ll define the classic rock term as the period between 1963 and 1978. While you might want to argue with those years, to me they are THE best years of recorded music and I feel lucky to have had them as my life’s musical soundtrack.

Flashback to 1958 and Muddy Waters visit to England. He showed up with an electric guitar (which was necessary to be heard over the drums/horns of the then current jazz/blues bands of the day) “Turned up to ten” the audiences were aghast as Muddy wailed away on his Fender guitar! Young musicians who heard it knew that this was cookin’ and were inspired to play like this. Some of the first and eventual stars to adopt playing the “new” American style were John Mayall, Eric Clapton, The Animals and members of the Rolling Stones to name a few. Listen to any of the mentioned artists first few LPs and you will have to agree that they are mainly blues. As their music progressed these bands started evolving to a more Rock / R&B sound, playing to packed clubs where patrons danced the night away. It seemed that the electric guitar was the catalyst for these bands as the Yardbirds, Fleetwood Mac (led by Peter Green on guitar), Rolling Stones, the Who and more became popular. When these bands eventually toured the United States, they influenced a myriad of young, soon to be musicians, feeding them a diet of British versions of American blues!

of these bands; Ten Years After, Led Zeppelin, Rory Gallagher, Savoy Brown, Foghat, J.Geils, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Cream, Free, Humble Pie, George Thorogood, Chicken Shack, Groundhogs, Crowbar, Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyd and ZZ Top just to name a handful and classic rock to be sure. Bands and musicians from this era that were more blues than rock include the likes of Johnny Winter, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Roy Buchanan, Gary Moore and last but not least, Canada’s own Downchild Blues Band. Fast forward to today and we have another stellar crop of players like Kenny Wayne Sheppard, Joe Bonamassa, Gov’t Mule, Warren Haynes, Robert Cray, Derek Trucks and his wife Susan Tedeschi. With blues and blues/rock in their hands I’m confident that future generations will still be inspired to take up the mantle and provide great music in the years to come.

Early adopters of the “new” blues-rock in the U.S. included Canned Heat, Mike Bloomfield, Paul Butterfield, Steve Miller and countless others. When Bob Dylan “plugged in” at the legendary Newport Folk Festival, he employed the Butterfield blues band to back him. The blues influence is evident in lots of classic rock from both sides of the pond. Consider the following list and I’ll bet you know and like a few

Value For Money Investing Gordon O. Stockman, BComm., CPA, CA, CFP, CIM Vice President – Financial Planning, Efficient Wealth Management Inc. Ontario is launching a review of regulations relating to financial advisors and planners to help investors and consumers make informed investment and financial choices, as well as enhance oversight in this sector. Unlike many financial service sectors in Ontario, financial advisors and planners are not subject to general regulatory oversight, which could leave consumers and investors vulnerable. This review will focus on addressing this gap by examining more tailored regulations.

To conduct such a review the Ontario government appointed an “Expert Committee to Consider Financial Advisory and Financial Planning Policy Alternatives.” The committee is taking submissions from the public and I thought I would share excerpts of my submission to the committee.

My Journey as a Financial Planner My name is Gordon Stockman. I am an Advice for a Fee Financial Planner.

I have decided it is best to tell you a story. It is my story of the highlights of my journey as a financial planner. I trust it will be engaging enough to get you through to my final singular notion. In 1995, I decided to become a financial planner. I flirted with returning to my roots as a Chartered Accountant (CA 1983) delivering tax and business advice to professionals and small businesses, but instead chose to be more forward looking and become a future orientated planner not a preparer of past financials and tax returns.

For the past 10 years, I remained un-regulated by IIROC, MFDA or FSCO and the OSC. It was not that I did not want to be registered; it was I did not want to be registered to trade. OSC requires registration of individuals providing advice on securities either direct to them or through a SRO. However, ALL methods of registration result in the ability to trade whether at the behest of the client or with discretion for the client. Any organization you joined was a “trading” organization. I followed all OSC rules carefully though frustratingly. Advice on securities was not proffered. Exclusive referral arrangements made it easier but being misunderstood by many did not.

In 1995, it was near impossible to get a family or an individual to pay for a financial plan. Few knew what it was and fewer still knew they needed it, but most important it was available everywhere for free, courtesy of the mutual fund industry. Selling against free is remarkably hard. So in January 1996, I joined a national mutual fund distributor. At that time the distributor was starting to roll out the most extensive laptop based financial planning platform in the industry. They were making it possible for all of their representatives to develop as skilled planners, they were mandating the attainment of the CFP designation within 5 years of your appointment (CFP 1998) and they had customers. I would just have to get used to commissions. As my skills grew, it became ever more apparent that all financial planning results do not necessarily lead to the purchase of that company’s mutual fund. Having trained as a Chartered Accountant, I was bothered in every way by the lack of objectivity and independence, real or perceived. Failing to remain objective and independent hampers the ability to provide a truly honest assessment.

People seek advisors not for the primary reason of transaction execution, but advice – including with respect to taxes, estates, retirement and risk management. Transaction execution should certainly remain the role of IIAC or MFDA member. However, a more holistic approach would recognize that the assets within a plan are a key point of discussion between clients and their financial planners even with no trade pending. Securities advice is often necessary and desired from the planner and should be allowable when experience and competence are present.

Professional Financial Planners need to be able to discuss securities with individuals. OSC’s requirement for registration of individuals providing advice on securities is proper but too narrow. The industry knows that advice is what is sought first but registration is focused on trade execution only. A method to register individuals for the provision of advice only would meet the public`s needs for seamless holistic advice. It is not necessary, nor should it be desirable to have all Financial Planners registered to sell securities, but they should be able to provide advice on them with the appropriate experience and education.

Getting paid only if a sale was made rendered all planning and advice suspect. If I put the client‘s interest solely before mine, sales would be challenging and they were. An objective and independent model, that put the client’s interest first was needed. In 2003, my wife and two friends, with business advice from me, rolled out a new model, Flat Fee for Service Financial Planning. Thus Efficient Wealth Management Inc. (EWM) would do the financial planning and the investment implementations would be through an exclusive outside Fee for Service referral arrangement. Yes, it was still not time for a pure Advice for a Fee model because of client costs.

In addition to the usual FREE competition, it was evident that if a client did choose to pay for independent planning, such advice could not result in a much needed cost savings from their investment advisor.

The Expert Committee is asked to consider that any resultant financial planning regulations should consider the possibility of providing “security advice only”, without trade registration, when assets are held in a properly regulated account. Financial Planning services are incomplete if we cannot provide specific comments, alternative solutions or second opinions about the client’s investments.

Efficient Wealth Management Inc. was created to provide unbiased, independent, superior financial planning advice, on an Advice for a Fee basis. Our extended mission is to bring portfolio manager services bundled with full financial planning to investors with less than 1 million dollars. We have been designing and utilizing strategic ETF portfolios for over 12 years, letting us return control of the cost of financial planning and investment management to the investor.

In 2005, I left mutual funds to join EWM. I was for the first time in over 9 years, not registered to buy and sell mutual funds. My objectivity, independence and integrity were restored but my ability to be completely effective was not. Many clients followed me. I updated many plans or initiated new ones. However, I was unable to discuss with any of them, the mutual funds they owned. The same funds they acquired when I was their representative.

I have searched hard for a business term to describe this quandary, but the best I came up with is “It’s silly.” Financial planning entails many things: cashflow planning, tax optimization, risk assessments for capacity and tolerance, withdrawal strategies, use of guaranteed instruments and asset allocations to support all. However, at the implementation stage as a nonregulated individual our voice must be silent with regard to the investment selection, even when our knowledge of both the individual and the security is superior.

Gordon is a Chartered Accountant (CA), a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and a Chartered Investment Manager (CIM). He has close to 20 years of experience in Financial Planning and Portfolio Management and over 35 years in Tax Planning. Gordon is a frequent guest on television and has written numerous articles on investing and financial planning. He has also taught Financial Services and Accounting courses at local colleges.
