swiftly fell in love with songwriting, playwriting and novel writing. Alex became an avid songwriter, which led her to Nashville when she was 19. She lived there for a month writing music, performing at songwriter nights and learning the industry from the ground up. While she was there, she began her first draft of this book. Through hard work and tenacity Alex was published. Here is a quick summary of “Tangled in Tennessee”: Like every young person, at the end of high school Alexandra was faced with a choice: she could either pick the career people expected her to (for her it was becoming a drama teacher), or she could pursue what made her heart come alive. Alexandra credits the support of her family and friends for making the right decision. “Once my parents realized what it was I really, truly loved doing, they sat me down and said ‘How can we help you make a career out of this’.” Alexandra explains. “I think so many more people would be doing what they love if only their Turn to Ten seconds, Pg 3

Alexandra Holden, grand daughter of Rose High of Castor, gets her first book, Tangled In Tennessee, published at age 22. Alex is currently finishing her English Literature degree at Ambrose University in Calgary.

At just 22 years of age, Alexandra Holden, the granddaughter of Rose High of Castor, is represented by one of Canada’s top literary agencies, the Carolyn Swayze Literary Agency, and has had her first novel, Tangled In Tennessee, published with Inkspell Publishing. Determined to achieve her goals in a highly competitive field, Alexandra is a testament of how powerful 10 seconds of courage can be. Alexandra grew up with a passion for writing, inspired by stories such as Anne of Green Gables and The Chronicles of Narnia. According to her mother, Mary Holden, in grade 1 Alex told her teacher that her goal was to publish a book. Her teacher made sure that goal came to fruition by carefully laminating and binding Alex’s first novel when she was 6 years old, titled “My Dog.” This amazing gift from her teacher inspired Alex to keep writing and she never looked back. She grew up with a passion for her dog, which she wrote about so much that her grade 4 teacher had to intervene and ask that she open up her literary horizons. Alexandra did and

Children’s camp explored museum by Gloria Swain The Strome Historical Society held their 4th Annual Museum Camp for kids for three days, Aug. 25 – 27. The children under the direction of Pastor Gloria explored the museum’s “Sports section”. Ron Williams spoke to the children on the importance of museums and answered the children’s questions. The campers found the museum tour most interesting with the bathing suits from way back giving everyone a giggle. During the three days we explored our local sports heroes, local teams and their equipment. It was interesting to note that as early as 1916 the following sports were taking place in our area: soccer, baseball, foot racing, horse, mule and sulky racing, basketball, hockey, football, turkey shoot, girl’s races, horseshoes, tennis, skiing and curling. The children were given the opportunity to create their own interactive sports games. They used broom handles, empty soup cans, empty toilet paper rolls, water buckets and their

imaginations. On Wednesday we had a sleep-over on the church property in a big tent. The children created their own baseball cards. This involved posing for photos, coming up with unique names and writing up catchy statistics. Breakfast on Thursday was pancakes and bacon prepared by our own young chef, Barry Nykolaishyn, assisted by Andrew Johns. The girls got involved in breakfast clean up while the boys took down the tent. The camp ended with a barbecue lunch at the local Seniors’ Centre hosted by the Historical Society executive. The lunch was also part of the Historical Society’s year end event. It appears that since the onset of these summer camps the number of children visiting the museum have increased. We appreciate the many local village folks who contributed in so many ways to make this event possible and profitable for our children.

Clearview trustees to visit colony schools this year Debra Johnston

ECA Review Reporter Visiting the Hutterite Colony Schools in Clearview District is on this year’s calendar of trustee activities. Last year, trustees visited the public schools and this year, the colony schools, which fall under Clearview’s umbrella, will be visited. Trustees made the decision at the Aug. 27 meeting. It would be a good chance to sit down and talk to staff and older students, said Trustee Karen Holloway, about what things they would like to see. “They might have some insight into opportunities that we can offer them,” stated Holloway, “We’ve talked for years about how do we offer something that will add to the

educational opportunities of our colony kids. That’s a discussion we should be having with the elders too.” According to the Hutterian Brethren website, hutterite.org, more Hutterite students are achieving education beyond the typical age of 15. Depending on the need of the colony, students may require further education to attain trade certification. Those trades people can then complete work on the colony that require a certified tradesperson. Some of the less conservative colonies are even allowing students to complete university level education to allow them to return and teach at the colony school rather than relying on the public system.

New logo chosen

The board selected a new logo at the meeting. Along with the new logo comes a new motto and new website. The site should be online within the next few weeks.

Budget feedback

The provincial government is looking for input regarding the 2015/16 budget. The board agreed that educational funding needs to be based on a ‘needs’ basis as well as the current per student basis. The current system favours urban schools with a greater number of students over the rural, smaller schools. The budget consultations are open to everyone and can be accessed at http:// alberta.ca/budget.cfm for those wanting to leave an opinion.

The first was that it inspired the novel, Tangled In Tennessee, which would become her first published book. The second was that Alexandra learned an important lesson about pursuing your goals. “All you need is 10 seconds of courage. Ten seconds is all it takes to knock on the door, shake someone’s hand, hit ‘send’ on an email.” Alexandra smiles, laughing. “After that there’s no turning back! Government advertising must deliver substance Each week more than 1,000 English and French community newspapers just like the ECA Review go about the business of telling stories that matter to the communities they serve. We are at your rinks and schools. We are at your school board and council meetings. We are at the scene when tragedy strikes. We celebrate your milestones. Our job is to cover east central Alberta, warts and all. And we are good at it. We are in towns big and small. Some community newspapers circulate well in excess of 100,000 copies. Some are in the hundreds. It may surprise you that each week, more than 20 million copies of community newspapers are distributed across the country. Independent research shows that more than 70 per cent of Canadians read their community paper. Despite our collective strength, ours is a medium easy to ignore. Because we focus on Canada one community at a time, we lack the sex appeal of other media. We’ve seen our share of federal government advertising gradually erode over the years. Our regional and national associations have met with government MPs, opposition MPs, cabinet ministers and senior bureaucrats to promote our case. We are always met with courtesy and a promise that things will get better. Well things are not getting better. So despite it being contradictory to everything we believe in journalistically, the time has come to tell you. In short, the federal government is all but ignoring your community

newspapers like the ECA Review. We believe this means the federal government is ignoring you and your community’s right to be informed about programs and services offered by the Government of Canada. In the last fiscal year, the federal government spent $75 million on advertising. More than $26 million of that went to TV ads, while another $15.5 million went to Internet advertising – an industry dominated by American-based companies like Google and Facebook. Creating ads and paying ad agencies ate away another $10 million. Radio advertising cost just under $7 million.

The federal government knows it, too. The Harper government spent $1.25 million with a company called News Canada to create its own stories – stories it offers for free to print and broadcast outlets. The vast majority of these governmentapproved stories are never published. But you and I paid for them. It is disconcerting that the federal government spent 50 per cent more creating its own news than the total advertising buy in Canadian newspapers. Responsible government is a Premier’s choice The economy changes. Employment changes. Nowadays, the average person holds 10 jobs prior to the age of 40. Changing jobs and changing employers is part of a modern economy. Years ago, major cities overflowed with livery stables employing tens of thousands of people. Today, there are none. Barrel-makers, switchboard operators and milkmen have also been put out of business. Yet new jobs emerge. Ten years ago, no one had heard of an app developer, social media manager, or sustainability advisor. Today, these are high-paying careers. There are entire departments of government that don’t exist anymore. Some of them employed a lot of people. Ottawa once had cabinet ministers (and supporting bureaucracies) for railways, canals and colonization. And for more than 60 years,

Alberta operated a Department of Telephones. These jobs have all disappeared. Sometimes jobs are eliminated because it’s cheaper to hire someone than to do it yourself. For example, a family in need of a new concrete driveway won’t buy a redi-mix truck, hire workers, and go into the concrete business. Instead, they phone around, compare prices, check company references, and hire someone else to do the work. Unfortunately, in a figurative sense, some governments will go out and buy the redi-mix truck, expanding the size and cost of government. In 1991, when Roy Romanow became Saskatchewan’s premier, his province was verging on insolvency. Previous administrations had spent too much and tried to do too much. Romanow eliminated 20 government programs, Turn to Yearly, Pg 7

Yearly interest $1.4 billion Cont’d from Pg 6 reduced the size of the civil service, and chopped program spending by 10 per cent. It was the only responsible thing to do. In 1992, Ralph Klein became Alberta’s premier, eventually facing a $23 billion debt—even more than Saskatchewan. The projected one-year deficit that he inherited was nearly $3 billion. The province was borrowing 25 per cent of its annual revenue. Yearly interest on debt was $1.4 billion. Klein had two options—cut spending, or send Alberta down the same path as present-day Greece. He cut spending. Many people believe Klein cut healthcare by double digit percentages. He didn’t. They also think he gutted infrastructure spending. He didn’t. Subsequent budget documents state that Klein’s fiscal strategy had been to cut the size of government by 20 per cent over a four-year period, but there were never any across-the-board cuts. Numerous categories outside health and education were cut by 35-40% per cent but healthcare was trimmed by only 7.7 per cent and education by a mere 5.1 per cent. Klein’s infrastructure spending, averaged annually over the years he was premier, exceeded the national average. Today, Alberta is again facing fiscal calamity. Our debt is within a stone’s throw of the $23 billion Klein had to address. Resource revenues are declining. Key commodity prices have crashed. Jobs are evaporating. Yet Premier Notley’s solution has been to hike government spending, borrow more money, boost the minimum wage, raise taxes on struggling businesses and announce a royalty review. Cacti add spice to your decor If you don’t really have a green thumb but still love plants, you may be ready to appreciate the cactus as a houseplant. You don’t have to have a Southwestern decor to enjoy cacti; there are many attractive varieties that require very little care.

Caring for your cactus

Many cacti species produce splendid colourful flowers in spring. If you want to treat yourself to a flowering cactus, be sure to buy it when it’s in bloom. That way, you won’t be in any doubt as to the maturity of the plant and its ability to flower.

Cacti need lots of light and will only thrive if you place them in your home’s sunniest, brightest spots. Accustomed to surviving extreme drought conditions, your cactus will require very little water and fertilizer. From time to time, remove any

Colourful flowers

The prickly pear cactus

Originally from Mexico, the prickly pear cactus is a particularly interesting species. It produces a delicious, edible fruit called cactus pear or Barbary fig. Like other cacti, its skin is covered with tiny invisible spines that are very difficult to remove. Moreover, prickly pear seed oil is considered one of the most expensive and precious in the world. Are you tempted to grow one yourself? Flowering cacti create a beautiful mosaic of desert-inspired beauty.

Three reasons to opt for a multigenerational home With the changing demographics in North America, multigenerational homes have become an attractive housing option for many families. With an aging population and the fact that children are living with their parents for longer periods of time, there is now a market for homes that feature independent-living areas. Here are three reasons you might want to consider this option. 1. If your goal is to keep your family close by, this type of housing has two separate dwellings. This allows all its residents to maintain their own living space and privacy. 2. The exchange of services is one of the main reasons people like living in

multigenerational homes. For example, a couple with young children whose grandparents live in an adjacent apartment benefit from having trusted child carers close by. In return, an older person who needs care can count on the compassionate presence of a loved one when necessary. Thus, the intergenerational approach, in addition to being a guarantee of security, helps seniors maintain their independence. 3. Another advantage of a multigenerational home is being able to share mortgage payments. A young couple with no savings has easier access to the property market by choosing to live in a housing unit with the parents

of one of the spouses. Think long and carefully before choosing to live in a multigenerational home.

One hundred years farming Submitted The descendants of Karl and Annie Muhlbeier celebrated 100 years of farming at the original homestead on Aug. 8, 2015 with roughly 160 people in attendance. Karl originally started a farm south of Veteran but traded in 1915 for the place north of Castor. He married Annie Hepp in 1918. The farm was passed down to their youngest son Charles Muhlbeier and his wife Erma. Randal, the oldest son of Charles and Erma took over the farm. Randal continues

to farm the land with his partner Tara Mulbeier and her children with

the help of Randal’s son, Frazier and step-son, Cade van Zandbergen

who intend to keep the farm in the family for many years to come.

SPORT ‘Competition is SPORT Ironman Scrap Shorts …a little lacking’ Shorts Metal Recovery • FIFA presidential candidate Chung Mong-joon of South Korea, to the London Telegraph, on Sepp Blatter trying to distance himself from soccer’s mega scandal: “Blatter is like a cannibal eating his parents and then crying he’s an orphan.”Comic Torben Rolfsen, on the Harlem Globetrotters ditching their patsy Washington Generals after 63 seasons: “They’re going to use the New York Knicks instead.” • Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times: “Apple is working to develop a driverless car. They might’ve gotten the idea watching the Jacksonville Jaguars’ offence last season.” \• @Randyturner15 of the Winnipeg Free Press, on Twitter: “I’m all for ads on NHL jerseys as long as referees’ uniforms can be sponsored by LensCrafters.” • Blogger Phil Mushnick: “Rumour is Urban Meyer suspended those four Ohio State football players after he caught them in the library.” • Greg Cote of The Miami Herald, after Buffalo signed QB-puncher IK Enemkpali: “First day in the Bills’ locker room, Enemkpali had his lunch money stolen by Richie Incognito.” • Comedy writer Alex Kaseberg: “Tim Tebow stopped a fight at the Philadelphia Eagles training camp. He didn’t stop it so much as he raised his arms and the fight parted.”

Cont’d from Pg 13 set the ‘slam’ precedent by winning the Triple Crown of racing for the first time in 37 years, so the stage is set for Williams. “What has made Serena the best on the women’s side of tennis, possibly in all of the sport, is not only her skill, but her determination to win,” wrote Isportsweb.com’s Rachel Grim. Not to downplay her accomplishment, but Williams is at her tennis peak at a point in history where the competition is … well, a little lacking. Martina Navratilova had Chrissie Evert to beat; Graf and Monica Seles were 1-2 or 2-1 for most of their careers. Williams’s foes are lesser lights in the overall scheme of things. Maria Sharapova leads the tour in gorgeousness, but her five Grand Slam career titles pale in comparison to Serena’s 20. Sharapova is ranked No. 2 in the world and you’d need Google or be a tennis nerd to know who’s No. 3 and 4 (Simona Halep is ranked third in the world, Angelique Kerber fourth). Unless Williams comes down with an illness or injury, there’s no reason to think she won’t breeze to victory in early September. Winning the Grand Slam would be a fitting bow to tie around her brilliant career.

• Comedy writer Alan Ray, on dancer Julianne Hough’s upcoming wedding to NHL player Brooks Laich, the pride of Wawota, Sask.: “The ‘something borrowed’ will be his false teeth.” • Another one from RJ Currie of sportsdeke.com: “Reuters reports a man wasn’t allowed to pay a parking ticket in Pennsylvania with 2,500 pennies because it was against the law. So there’s one fewer use for CFL bonuses.”
