It’s hard to believe the February long weekend is just around the corner! Valentine’s Day falls on the Family Day long weekend (February 13th to 15th), giving us a much-needed midwinter break. While it is easy to stay and hibernate in our homes during this time, we should be taking this opportunity to get out and engage in new experiences. The Village of Streetsville offers so many opportunities from fine dining experiences, to bakeries serving savoury treats, to spa treatments. On the long weekend you could take your family out for skating at Vic Johnston Arena or go 5 pin bowling at Streetsville Bowl. Change is in the air! Did you notice anything different about the Village Times?

Streetsville Village Times

Beginning this issue, the Village Times has undergone a cover re-design. Some of the changes — body type, fonts — we made earlier. The cover was updated with a new modern feel. Obviously, we hope you find the changes agreeable. We began this process over the holidays when we contracted a digital solutions company. We worked on the newspaper’s look and feel and will soon launch a new modern web-site that will enhance our publications. In mid-February we will be publishing the 2016 business directory. Look for a new design including photos of local proprietors in their place of business, a complete up-to-date business listing and an exciting calendar of events for 2016. At RJ Entertainment Publishing we feel strongly that publications currently have the highest reach of any media. By facilitating discussion and comment on local projects, businesses and initiatives, our publications have become a big part of the local landscape, and have helped draw community interest and awareness to positive local development and businesses.

Since her Grandmother Doris Clipperton had a famous recipe for heavenly butter tarts of her own, Kate took over this recipe. Kate’s butter tarts have become a staple in the community, and keep her customers coming back for more. Furthermore, Kate’s butter tarts were entered at the Butter Tart Festival in Midland and received honourable mention. Visit Kate’s Town Talk Bakery at 206C Queen Street South and treat yourself and your significant other to a delicious treat this Valentine’s Day! Looking Forward to 2016 By Lindsay Howe

Streetsville residents can look forward to an exciting year ahead! There is always something to see and do in the village, especially with the onset of spring beginning at the end of next month. The warmer weather always brings more activity to Streetsville, with residents wanting to take advantage of all the perks that come along with living in the village.

During the spring and summer the village is booming with activity, especially the restaurants, bars and cafes. The village of Streetsville offers the perfect setting to be out enjoying the fresh outdoors on a patio, catching up with old friends and loved ones. Whether you are dining at a restaurant, drinking a beer at a pub, or enjoying a specialty drink from a nearby cafe, there are many patio choices in the village for you to choose from.

You can also look forward to all of your favourite annual festivals and events. This year the village wide events will be bigger and better than ever! You can look forward to our summer festivals and events including the Bread and Honey Festival and Canada Day Celebration. During these events, local musicians will take the stage, showcasing their talent and serenading us with their performances. Also, the Streetsville Farmers’ Market will be open weekly (from June to October in Centre Plaza), where you will find an abundance of top-quality, Ontario farm-fresh produce.

Make 2016 the year that you take time for yourself, as well as set aside some quality time to be spent with the people you care about most. Streetsville is the ideal place to go to pamper yourself and create lasting memories with the ones you love!

This year there will be even more reason to spend your free time in the village. Our revitalized Streetsville Village Square is centrally located in the heart of the village, with an abundance of shops, services, eateries and parks right at your fingertips! Streetsville Village Square will continue to host regular activities and events from yoga to outdoor movie night, Latin dance nights and much more! The village square is also the ideal spot to relax and unwind after a busy day. There are lots of tables and picnic benches for you to utilize. From this vantage point you can take in all the sights and sounds of the village. With the onset of spring approaching, we can soon revisit the parks and trails along the Credit River. Vic Johnston Park and Culham Trail will come alive over the coming months, allowing us to witness the beautiful transformation of the season and take in the sights and sounds of nature. Culham trail attracts dozens of walkers, runners and cyclists daily. From the scenic trail along the Credit River, to the main street streetscapes, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Revitalize your Winter Workout: By Lindsay Howe

Fitness and Fresh Air Health and Wellness in the Village

Take your friends or family out for a fun filled skating outing at Vic Johnston Arena located at 335 Church Street. Not only is ice skating fun and invigorating, but it also provides cardiovascular benefits.

Beating the Winter Blues by Revitalizing your Workout Routine

This ice sport enables you to use your small stabilizer muscles, aiding in building lower-body muscles, including the hips, hamstrings, quadriceps, and calves. Recreational skating burns several hundred calories an hour! Vic Johnston Arena offers general public skating Sunday’s from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. Parent’s & Preschoolers/Seniors Free Public Skate happens Thursday’s from 12:30 - 2:00 p.m. Single admission is $4, or $10 for a family/group. For more information visit www.vicjohnston.ca or call 905-826-3011 Before you know it spring will be here and winter will be a distant memory. Embrace the snowy weather while you still can by participating in an enjoyable activity. Sledding is fun for any age! Head out to a nearby hill and slide down in a toboggan to your hearts content. Climbing up the hill repeatedly is excellent exercise, and a great leg workout. The thrill of the ride down makes each uphill hike worthwhile! Shoveling is also a great way to help tone your body, and develop muscular strength and endurance. It also burns approximately 400 calories an hour. When shoveling, make sure to use your legs, not just your upper body; bend your knees and hips instead of using your back. At the beginning of each year we make resolutions to live a healthier lifestyle, and set challenging diet and fitness goals we hope to accomplish. In this frosty cold weather, it is tempting to take the easy route and ‘hibernate’ the winter months away, depriving our bodies of much needed sunlight.

Experience the enjoyment and satisfaction that comes along with outdoor activity. Keep active in the months of winter to powerfully lift your mood and boost your energy. Whether you get bundled up to take a stroll down Main Street, or wander through the Culham Trail, exercising outdoors in the natural environment is good for the soul. So go out and embrace the cold; take pleasure in the winter wonderland that surrounds you!

Vitamin D is important to keep our bones strong. Sunlight and being outdoors also has a positive effect on our mood, self-esteem and leads to an overall improved sense of wellbeing. So get up off that couch and engage in a winter workout that will invigorate your mind and get your blood pumping. Go out and experience the mental and physical benefits of getting outdoors and moving this winter. Can you remember a time when you were excited about winter? Maybe it was lying in the snow, flailing your arms and legs all around to make snow angels. Or the thrill of tumbling down a snowy hill on a sled. Embrace that feeling, and allow yourself to experience the exhilaration you once felt, venturing through the fresh white snow after a snowfall. Walking in the winter is a refreshing and invigorating experience. The cold air helps clear your head and reduce stress. It is time to embrace the crisp, quiet stillness of winter by bundling up and journeying through the village. Residents of Streetsville are blessed to live amongst beautiful scenic trails and parks. Take advantage of any opportunity to take a brisk walk through the village or stroll through a nature trail to experience the beautiful winter scenery around you. You will actually burn more calories when you are active in the cold because greater effort is required to move your feet through the snow, forcing you to lift your legs higher and use more momentum.

Nurturing the Renaissance Child: Arts and Cultural Based Learning at Kendellhurst Academy By Lindsay Howe

When a student’s education is immersed in arts and culture, the quality of his/her life is enriched. The ‘Renaissance Child’ is the well-rounded child, not just in the area of academics, but in all areas of life. The Renaissance child’s school experience is immersed in arts and culture. Kendellhurst Academy offers a comprehensive arts program and cultural studies. The administration and faculty at Kendellhurst believe that all children have a right to fully participate in an artistic and cultural based school experience. Kendellhurst enriched curriculum is not exclusively based on education, but also cultivating leadership and broad skills. Artistic Expression at Kendellhurst The Arts program at Kendellhurst encompasses Visual Arts, Music and Dramatic Arts. From daily classroom experiences, to extra curricular activities, to regular school trips, students are given regular opportunities to participate in artistic experiences. The program incorporates learning about famous artists, studying their work and taking on creative art projects, with emphasis on the artistic process. Kendellhurst’s comprehensive French program is taught daily by a certified teacher (OCT), to help ensure second language success. Not only are students taught the French language (including reading, writing and oral communication), they also learn about French through plays and culture.

Music is another integral component of Kendellhurst’s curriculum. Students study classical and jazz performers from Vivaldi, to Bach, Mozart and Fitzgerald. Kendellhurst’s musical education begins with learning to play the recorder in the Primary grades, with an additional basic percussion program. Students then learn to play piano, guitar, flute or clarinet. The music program also encompasses Global Voices where students learn songs from around the world and in French.

Kendellhurst’s Loyalty Discount Package When your child begins their education at Kendellhurst Academy in PreSchool or Kindergarten, you will receive the benefit of a Loyalty Discount package when he/she starts Grade One. This includes before or afterschool care, hot catered organic meals and snacks, with organic milk or juice. Let’s not forget strong academics and daily French language instruction are part and parcel of the Kendellhurst school package. Therefore it is lucrative for parents to start their children at Kendellhurst early on! Directors and coowners John Kendell, Hon. B. Sc. and Paula Carrasco-Kendell, Hon. B.A., B. Ed. (OCT), M.A.T., Ed. Doc. (OISE/UT Candidate) want to make education accessible and affordable for their Kendellhurst families.

Dramatic Arts is integrated into the daily school curriculum. Students are also working towards performances for their formal productions, taking place twice a year on the gymnasium stage. Additionally, French language mini-productions are held for special events including Mother’s Day, graduation, etc. Kendellhurst’s theatre arts curriculum helps students improve their self-confidence, be more assertive, cooperative and develop their public speaking skills. Arts and Culture through Organized Field Trips and Extra Curricular Activities Kendellhurst students are given the opportunity to attend regular field trips, exposing them to a range of cultural and artistic experiences. Field trips include: The Art Gallery of Ontario, Young People’s Theatre, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Ontario Science Centre, Mountsberg Conservation, and Royal Ontario Museum. In winter, students can attend alpine field trips to Blue Mountain and snow shoeing at the local conservation area.

Kendellhurst Academy will be holding an open house on Saturday, April 23rd from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Alternately, School Registrar, Mrs. Sardinha, is available to do school tours every Tuesday morning. For more information or to book a tour call 905-813-8000. Visit Kendellhurst Academy on the web at www.kendellhurst.com. You can also follow Kendellhurst on their Facebook page. Kendellhurst Academy Grade School is located at 170 Church Street, and Kendellhurst Academy Preschool is located at 175 Queen Street South in Streetsville. Contact the Grade School at (905) 813-8000 and the Preschool at (905) 567-1070.

As part of their regular programming, all students take part in martial arts, tai chi, yoga and hip hop dance classes, taught by qualified instructors. Seasonally, Kendellhurst offers swimming classes, and commencing this year, skating at Vic Johnston Community Centre will be added to the long list of programming offered. Summer camp activities include: swimming, biking, and culinary arts, in addition to learning about art and great artists. Regular after school clubs are included in the tuition price. After school clubs (grades 1 and up) include: Culinary Arts, Mandarin, Glee, Arts and Crafts, Lego, Sports, Running and Homework Club. The extra curricular classes and after school clubs are fun and engaging, so much so that students don’t want to leave at the end of the day! Building Character and Culture At the core of Kendellhurst’s pedagogy is quality character education, taught through the Virtues Project. Kendellhurst’s multi-layered approach to character building teaches students how to get along democratically with each other, and how to be leaders. The goal is to create a social environment that encourages cooperation, sharing, and respect for the similarities and differences of others. Character education is integrated into daily teachings, taught through focused lessons and service related learning projects. Kendellhurst strives to create a safe, accepting and positive learning environment for its students. Students are taught about global issues to encourage critical thinking and strengthen their cultural consciousness.

Family Fables - Finding your Passion By Deanne Clipperton

In support of Sponsor A Child

For some of us it is easy to figure out what you like to do and for others it is more of a struggle or system of trial and error. Our boys are active and their interests are very evident; 100% sports for Nolan and sports and creating things for Graydon. Our daughter Mckenzie on the other hand is very different. She tried hockey didn’t love it, she didn’t want to have anything to do with the puck but she was a good skater so she switched over to figure skating and has enjoyed this. She has also tried gymnastics and various forms of dance. She turned 7 in August and is now starting to find the things that she loves and express her desire to do them. She loves acro dance (a combination of gymnastics and dance) as well as her new jazz and tap class. After a recent birthday party at an art studio she came home very excited, and requested to sign up for an art class immediately. I had never seen her so excited about something, so we signed her up and she started within the week. After her first class she came home and asked when her next class was. She couldn’t wait until the next week to go again.

PINK & WHITE CASINO NIGHT Join us for a Casino Style Extravaganza

As for skating she has enjoyed it more than hockey but she has just come to the conclusion that she enjoys dance and art more than skating and she would prefer not to do it anymore and she actually told us this. I had seen this for a while but she said that she still wanted to continue. Within the last couple of weeks she has said that she would like to stop skating. We told her that we supported her decision but that she needed to finish out this year because when you start something you need to finish it. We feel that you need to honour your commitment to what you started and finish on a positive note. She said that she understood and would finish this season but wanted to make sure that we knew she didn’t want to do it again.

I am proud of her for finding her passions and for being able to identify and express her interests. Everyone needs to find those things in their lives that don’t just make time pass but make time live, and this is easier for some than it is for others.

Cost of Groceries is Going UP By Silvia Yeomans, Queen Spectacle

My New Year’s resolution this year was to have less food in our fridge and freezer. I have a tendency of heading to the grocery store with great intentions, and walk away with more meal ideas than I could cook. In the end, I throw away food that I shouldn’t have bought.

5. Avocados These are not only loaded with healthy fat but contain a variety of vitamins and minerals such as lutein, beta-carotene, vitamins C, B6 and E. Combined, avocados can help prevent macular degeneration, cataracts and can improve dry eyes.

Apparently I’m not alone. Canadian households throw away $120 worth of food every month. And now with the low Canadian dollar, the cost of fruits and vegetables are rising quickly. I need to be more careful with my groceries but still provide my family with the essentials of nutritious food options that are not only good for our bodies, but also good for our eyes.

See how you do with a few of these added to your meal plan. Try not letting these nutrient rich foods go bad in your fridge and the challenges of food prices might be a smaller obstacle than you think. If you have any questions regarding this article, or if you’d like to see a specific topic discussed, feel free to email me at silvia@queenspectacle. com.

Next time you go to the grocery store, think about adding some of these to your shopping cart:

Silvia Yeomans is the owner of Queen Spectacle. Queen Spectacle has locations in Streetsville, Port Credit and The Kingsway. They are a Full Eye Care Team recognized for their service excellence. For more information, visit their website, www.queenspectacle.com

1. Dark leafy greens such as kale, spinach and Swiss chard are high in lutein. Lutein helps prevent eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration. 2. Cold-water fish (salmon, tuna, herring and sardines) are loaded with omega-3. Omega-3 prevents plaque formation in the eye, which can form into macular degeneration. It can also improve the quality of your tears and improve dry eyes. 3. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprout and bok choy can help decrease inflammation in the eye and encourage detoxification. 4. Tea Teas such as black, green and oolong are very beneficial in the prevention of cataracts. They have also been shown to prevent the growth of new blood vessels in the retina, which can lead to macular degeneration.

Ward 11 update By Councillor George Carlson Christmas Window Contest Winners Many of the businesses in Streetsville competed for the chance to win the prestigious 2015 Christmas Window Decorating Contest. The most beautifully decorated storefronts in the village were awarded for their hard work and display of holiday spirit. Judges picked the top three windows.

Over the next 30 years, the GTHA’s population will increase by approximately 4 million people, which will impact traffic volumes and traffic congestion throughout the region and across the city. The City, along with the Federal and Provincial Governments is making important investments in public transit infrastructure to mitigate traffic congestion and provide residents with more efficient public transit options, such as the new Mississauga Transitway.

The winners are: 1st Place – Body and Soul - Day and Med Spa 2nd Place - Joanne Lipp European Skin Care 3rd Place - Silver Lining

The Mississauga Transitway is served by MiWay and GO Transit and is the first dedicated bus corridor to be built within the GTHA. When fully complete, the 18km Transitway will feature 12 stations beginning at Winston Churchill Boulevard in the west and ending at Renforth Drive in the east, making it faster and easier for commuters to travel to across Mississauga and the GTHA. The Transitway will feature 25 buses per hour that will serve riders during the weekday rush hours at the City Centre, Dixie, and Renforth stations and will save you almost 15-18 minutes of commute time when traveling from the Winston Churchill station in west Mississauga to the Renforth station in east Mississauga. The Transitway offers reliable, rapid, and convenient east-west travel, as well as north-south connections at stations and easier connections to surrounding municipalities. Eye See Eye Learn Program By Your Local Optometrist By Dr. Ceaus

Did you know that there is a program that allows children in Junior Kindergarten to receive a free full eye exam and a free pair of glasses? This program is funded by the Ontario Association of Optometrists and the Government of Ontario with the goal of ensuring every child is visually ready for school. The early years in school are very important as children are learning to read. Later we transition to using reading as a method of learning. This means that anything impeding with learning at the early stages can have a significant impact on learning in the later years. 80% of learning is visual, and seeing 20/20 is not the only factor that indicates that vision is optimal for learning. A Doctor of Optometry will check at what level you child can see in the distance and at near, if the eyes are teaming together, if there is any prescription and if the ocular tissue is healthy. The Eye See Eye Learn Program provides children born in 2011, in Junior Kindergarten, with a free full eye exam. You must see a Doctor of Optometry that is registered with the program, which you can find on the Ontario Association of Optometrists website. The program also offers free glasses for children in Junior Kindergarten that are require them. The glasses are impact resistant, have all the coatings needed for children to get great vision, and even come with a warrantee. Did you know that children 19 and under are covered by OHIP for 1 full eye exam per year and any emergency examinations in between? It is critical that you bring your child in for a full exam as 1 in 4 children has a vision related problem. We often hear from parents that their child doesn’t complain, they can point to a plane in the sky, they’re healthy, so why bring them in? While your child may not complain and they may seem like they can see great, they may be doing so under high visual stress. Visual stress is when we are trying to focus over a prescription we have, or keeping your eyes aligned when their natural tendency is to turn inwards or outwards. When this system breaks down we can start to see blurry, double vision, words moving on a page, fatigue, headaches etc. Most children won’t complain of these symptoms as they are used to seeing this way and don’t realize that it is abnormal. Ensuring your child has had a proper eye examination will allow you to ensure that they are fully prepared for school. Don’t hesitate to bring your child to a Doctor of Optometry. We recommend your child’s first eye exam be at 6 months of age. We customize our exams for your child’s age and needs, so even if you child does not know their letters yet we can still evaluate the vision. You can find the closest Doctor of Optometry by searching the Ontario Association of Optometrists website www.optom.on.ca.

30 Days to Crush Your New Year’s Resolution and Get FIT Once & For All!

Holly’s Tips

Cleaning Painted Walls

By Coach Crystal

Did you ring in the New Year with the Resolution to lose weight and get fit…again?!? Has your drive and determination dwindled as we begin the month of February? Ugh. Frustrating isn’t it?

The painted walls, doors and trim in our kitchen, baths and entranceways are daily exposed to moisture, grime, cooking splatter, spray from our hair products and smudges left from dirty hands. Although they don’t collect as much dirt as the horizontal surfaces in these areas, an occasional serious cleaning is warranted.

What if you spent the next 30 days dropping excess pounds and getting into better shape? Then you could ride out the rest of 2016 fitter than ever and more likely to eat healthier, indulge less and stick with your workout schedule. You’d welcome next year feeling fabulously fit and confident. Sounds good, right? I’ve got just the plan to get you there. Follow these 5 steps to transform your body over the next 30 days...

The type of paint on your walls, doors and trim should determine your method of approach. If you’re not sure of the paint type, test small, hidden areas to see if cleaning affects the finish. In any case, avoid heavy-duty cleaners with strong chemicals, those that are abrasive and coloured scrub pads, all of which can damage the finish or change the colour of the paint.

1) Go Process Free: Nothing “Popped, puffed, floured, flaked, shredded or instant” for 30 days is such a simple way to accelerate fat loss. Just think of all the extra carbs and calories that you’ll be saving yourself from. And it’s not so bad, once you get used to it.

Flat, matte and eggshell paint finished are not as washable as semi-gloss, gloss or satin enamel paint finishes. You risk removing some of the paint along with the dirt, especially if you use heavy-duty cleaners or scrub too hard. A few drops of mild hand dishwashing liquid and warm water is a safe choice for flat, matte or eggshell finishes. The cleaning solution should not sit on the painted surface for more than one minute. So clean, rinse and dry one section before moving on to the next section.

2) Workout 5x’s Each Week: Take the next 30 days to really focus your efforts. Train as if you were preparing yourself for a special event, with the mindset that each and every workout is important in seeing you through your goal. You don’t even have to leave the comfort of your own home! Simply join Coach Crystal weekday mornings at 7 am for a 20 MINUTE, FULL Body, FAT Blasting FUN-ctional workout and get in the best shape of your life with R3VOLVE Life Fit TV on ROGERS TV.

General purpose enamel is fairly stain resistant and can handle gentle scrubbing. If the enamel paint is very dirty, try a mild alkali solution, such as 30ml (2 tbsp) ammonia or laundry detergent powder in 4L (1 gallon) of warm water.

3) Go Sugar Free: Sugar is the biggest thing holding you back when it comes to dropping fat and getting lean. And not just refined sugar. I’m talking about all sugars. Take the next 30 days to cut out all sweeteners and limit your intake of sweet fruits. This will be hard at first, especially if you have a sweet tooth, but the rapid change in your body is fantastic incentive to keep going.

Stronger solutions may remove some of the paint, so be sure to test a hidden spot before starting to wash larger areas.

4) Focus on Protein and Veggies: Enough about all the things you can’t eat, let’s talk about what you can eat. Your meals should be a variety of protein and veggies. For protein stick with organic, hormone-free meat that has been roasted, baked or grilled. For veggies, avoid starchy veggies like potatoes, and instead stick with an assortment of colorful, fiber-filled veggies. 5) Commit to be Fit: If you’re the type of person that needs someone physically motivating you, the quickest way to get your body into tip-top shape is to join R3 Evolution Fitness Studio and the R3 community. The R3 Coaches and the accountability from like-minded members are here to get you into the best shape of your life. So there you have it, 5 simple steps to transforming your body and crushing your resolution once and for all! So you’re going to spend the next 30 days simply getting older and more out-of-shape OR you could buckle down and finally make your amazing transformation. The choice is yours. I’m here to see you through it all. Call or email now and we will get started. February is Heart Health Month

Submitted by Streetsville Chiropractic Clinic Did you know that heart disease is a leading cause of death in Canada? I am sure you know someone who has high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes. Although it’s an epidemic in North America, it is nearly unheard of in other parts of the world. What’s the difference? It’s important to look at the true causes of heart disease & avoid falling for myths when we answer that question.

Here are some action steps you can take to help prevent Heart Disease. • Eat naturally occurring whole foods • Reduce (or ideally eliminate) sugar • Quit smoking • Maintain a healthy weight • Exercise regularly • Control insulin • Eat one-third of your diet raw • Make sure you are getting enough Omega 3’s and good Omega 6’s • Optimize Vitamin D • Manage stress (really it is about creating peace) • Minimize exposure to toxins

Myth Buster: Myth: Heart disease is normal with ageing. Truth: Heart Disease maybe COMMON in the Canada but is absolutely NOT normal. Myth: Heart Disease runs in my family history, so why bother? Truth: In studies, Okinawan’s and other centenarian cultures have the same high risk and low risk genes as North Americans but heart disease is rare and unheard of.

Join your local doctor at Streetsville Chiropractic Clinic, 206 Queen Street South for the upcoming workshop The Root Cause of Heart Disease on Monday, February 29th at 7:30pm.

Myth: I am too young to worry about heart disease. Truth: How you live NOW affects your risk for heart disease later in life. As early as childhood and adolescence, plaque can start accumulating in the arteries. You are NEVER too young to take action.

With heart disease being one of the leading causes of death in Canada, the true solution to this epidemic is an unwavering commitment to the ‘Essentials of Health’. Allow Dr. Morgan and Dr. Casey Sinclair to guide you to beat the statistics. Join Dr. Morgan and Dr. Casey as they unpack the key components to making sure the strongest muscle in your body stays that way. In this talk, The Root Cause of Heart Disease, you will: •Learn how to shop heart-smart •Discover small everyday changes that will really pay off •Gain a fresh perspective on the power of salt •Unlock the nutrients that will support your cardiovascular system

Value For Money Investing

Gordon O. Stockman, BComm., CPA, CA, CFP, CIM Vice President – Financial Planning, Efficient Wealth Management Inc. Value For Money Investing means we wish to allocate and use our hard-earned resources in order to improve investment outcomes in a continuous and sustainable way at a fair and equitable price. In other words, achieve good investment returns AND receive fair value for the services provided. The path forward is Advice For a Fee financial planning.

your investment manager possibly be doing to earn that? Surely, not just a couple of telephone calls, a fancy newsletter and a few meetings? As a manager myself, I would like to relate to you all the things I do to justify such a generous fee as $7500, but I can’t because you should not be paying anyone that much including me, for management of a $500,000 portfolio. In the US, there is growing amounts of literature that espouses paying no more than one half of a percent (0.5%) or $2,500 for the same size portfolio. Canadians, both as industry providers and as consumers, are still learning to work at these levels but even here in Canada, one percent (1%) is the maximum you should be willing to pay for investment management services. We think less than one percent should be your target.

Time To Negotiate Since beginning this column over eight years ago, the most common subject has been about fees in one way or another. My very first article was about cost do matter and the second written was about simply, fees. Many more articles on the same or related topics have followed. Why? Well, it is pretty much agreed in the investment community that the best reliable indicator of future success with a particular investment strategy is the fees to pursue it. Fees and costs do not only matter, they are often the foundation for success.

As the mutual fund industry is confronted with more complete disclosure, there will be pressure for your advisor to answer for the fees you now more fully understand. Many are preparing for this by being proactive with their clients and moving them from high cost mutual funds to low cost Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) in Fee Based accounts. But beware.

Thanks to a majority of security and investment regulators in Canada, 2016 will be the year when much more complete and relevant disclosure will be provided to you about fees. How much your advisor is compensated and how much you are paying your fund managers will become less obscure, more detailed and hopefully more understood. This will be an ideal time to have that conversation with your advisor that you have been putting off for such a long time. Why am I paying so much?

A well designed portfolio of ETFs still has embedded expenses averaging .2% to .3% at best with custodial and trading costs likely added on. A one and a half percentage (1.5%) fee from your advisory firm still puts you close to the two percent (2%) costs of many of the mutual funds you are giving up. Your advisor is taking you in the right direction. Help him get you there by not agreeing to pay more than one percent for the advisory services. If you are already in a Fee Based account, call your advisor and insist on a reduction to one percen t (1%) or below. Ask about all the other costs that might be involved.

The purpose of this current article is to give you some assistance and guidelines to help with this conversation. First pay careful attention to the dollar amounts not the percentages. One and a half percent (1.5%) may seem small as a percentage but it is $7,500 per year on a $500,000 portfolio. Seems a lot of money in dollars, doesn’t it. Why did I choose one and a half percent (1.5%) as an example? This is the standard and usual fee for Fee Based accounts at many independent and bank brokerages.

This is also the year that financial planning will become much more widely talked about. Unfortunately, not for the best of reasons. Discussions about high fees are often deflected by pointing out the valuable financial planning services that are included in the monthly fees. Those services might include ongoing cashflow management, ongoing tax planning, tax return preparation, estate plans, insurance evaluations, pension calculations and help with managing the motions inherently present with being an investor. Certainly, an extremely useful and valuable list of services, IF indeed provided. But many advisors do not provide them and just as importantly, many clients do not press for them. Not much value if these services are not delivered.

It probably took you months of work to bring home $7,500. What can

tirement liabilityere

In addition, financial planning does undoubtedly justify some fee but not $7,500 just because you have a $500,000 portfolio. Our company provides an extensive array of financial planning services, tax preparation, with customized portfolios designed around your financial plan all integrated with a portfolio management solution using ETFs for around $5,000 per year. Our experience has us believing that the financial planning portion is worth more than half the total, which places the value of the investment management alone below $2,500 per year. Why would you pay $7,500 for regular calls to see if you have more money to invest?

Increase your income through intelligent financial planning decisions.

If your investment advisor’s organization wants more than one percent (1%) in annual fees, just say no!

Efficient Wealth Management Inc. was created to provide unbiased, independent, superior financial planning advice, on an Advice for a Fee basis. Our extended mission is to bring portfolio manager services bundled with full financial planning to investors with less than 1 million dollars. We have been designing and utilizing strategic ETF portfolios for over 12 years, letting us return control of the cost of financial planning and investment management to the investor.

Streetsville Post Office – A short history Source – Tweedsmuir history of Streetsville – Volume 1 Mrs. E. Couse, June 1967

In January, 1829 the Government recorded the establishing of a Post Office in Streetsville. There was also a Post Office called Toronto Township. The first Post Office was in the Robert Graydon grocery store, at the corner of Pearl and Queen Streets. Mrs. W. H. Patterson was the first Post Master, followed by Mr. James Rutledge. Mr. Graydon carried on after the death of Mr. Rutledge until a fire in 1909 destroyed the property. Many other buildings including the Graydon home were destroyed. The Post Office moved to a little store, now 234 Queen Street South, from there it was moved across Queen Street to 221 Queen Street South, Mr. Harry Staley was Post Master. The next move was to the Goodison Store at the corner of Queen and Main Streets. A new Post Office was built at the corner or Queen and Maiden Lane. Mr. Staley retired and Mr. Sloan became Post Master, followed by Mr. John Adamson. In May 1966, a temporary office as opened at Kerr and Queen Streets while the new Post office was being built on the opposite corner. This was completed and occupied on Saturday, November 5, 1966 with Mr. Mel James as Post Master. In October 2013, the Post office was again moved, to 224 Queen Street South and the building at Queen and Kerr Streets was sold.

Streetsville Historical Society The next Streetsville Historical Society meeting will take place on February 11th at 7:30 pm at Streetsville United Church in the Fellowship Hall located at 274 Queen St. S. Joanne Doucette, author and Leslieville historian will be the guest speaker. She will be speaking on Leslie and Beatty family histories, George Leslie and perhaps some other things as well.
