The 7th annual Taste of Streetsville takes place this year from September 10th to October 8th. The Taste is a popular event that encourages residents and visitors to dine at some of the most celebrated restaurants in Streetsville. Each prix fixe menu includes a savoury appetizer, entrée and delectable dessert, all for the low price of $30!

This month long culinary event gives you the opportunity to take advantage of special meal deals at your favourite restaurants throughout the village. With over ten restaurants participating in Taste of Streetsville, you can experience the diverse selection of eateries offered. The festival draws people in the community as well as visitors from across the city to come out and enjoy a delicious meal at a fantastic local restaurant, all the while supporting the community, and a worthy cause. When you order from a Taste of Streetsville’s prix fixe menu, you are also supporting the Trillium Health Partners Foundation at Credit Valley Hospital. A portion of the funds raised this fall will go towards the redevelopment of Credit Valley’s Emergency Department. The enhancements brought on by this redevelopment will allow for better patient flow and create separate, specialized treatment areas for paediatrics and seniors.

Streetsville Residents Raise Funds for Mental Health Community

On Tuesday, July 14th, Streetsville resident Ralph Faustino passed away.

Ralph (also known as Jason) was a frequent wanderer of our village streets and a well-known local resident in our community.

FALL 2015

Though not too many people took the opportunity to get to know him well, everyone knew of him and he was a fixture in our village for over 25 years.

His passing shocked and saddened members of the community.

There has been an outpour of support for Ralph, residents and others who felt the weight of his absence on our village streets and wanted to help others suffering from mental illness. It is truly amazing the recognition and support that has been bestowed in Ralph’s honour. His story received recognition across media platforms, from televised national news and newspapers to social media. In a very short time, an outstanding total of $8,900 was raised through on online fundraising campaign!

How the Funds from community fundraiser have been divided: Julia Belmonte, a Streetsville resident and former owner of Second Cup in Streetsville, started the fund. Upon hearing the news of Ralph’s passing, she immediately started an online campaign to raise money for a possible commemorative bench and a memorial service to honour his memory. The money and support came flowing in and only a day after the campaign was started over $6,000 was raised!

A large portion of this money goes to the Canadian Mental Health Community.

A cheque for $3,000 was given to David Smith, CEO of the Peel branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA). The CMHA local branch provides a wide range of specialized mental health programs and services, tailored to the needs of those suffering from mental illness in the community.

The proceeds will also go towards a bench with a commemorative plaque in Ralph’s honour. Julia is currently working to secure a location for the bench in the village. Given how much time Ralph spent in our community, it seems fitting that in addition to the commemorative bench, a portion of the money raised should go towards beautifying the village.

Lastly, thanks to Julia and her fundraising efforts, a portion of the funds was set aside for a memorial to pay tribute to Ralph. The memorial was held on July 21st in Streetsville Village Square. It was a touching gathering, with hundreds of Ralph’s friends and community members, eager to show their support for Ralph. Also in attendance were Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie, MP Brad Butt and Ward 11 Councillor George Carlson who each spoke on Ralph’s behalf. Touching speeches, flowers and letters were shared. Talented community members who knew Ralph performed live music on stage in the square. The memorial was a lovely tribute to Ralph!

Ralph was a fixture in the community and it is hard to believe that he will no longer roam our village streets. His presence is missed by anyone who knew of him. The outpour of love and support shown for Ralph speaks volumes about the kind of close-knit community we have here in Streetsville.

Official opening of the Village Square

We all have cones in our eyes

Whenever a landmark event like this new Village Square is opened to the public I reflect on the past and how we got here.

I recently shared this picture on our social media sites and got an interesting response. (This is from the Ishihara’s Colour –Deficiency Tests. The number below is 42). It is part of a test done by an optometrist to check for colour deficiency. It was surprising to see how many people missed part or all of the number.

Less than 200 years ago all of the lands around us were forested wilderness.

Then Timothy Street showed up in 1820 and built his bungalow on the banks of the Credit River where it still stands today, just behind, down the Main St hill.

Less than 100 years ago the cenotaph was erected to commemorate the sacrifice made by World War One soldiers on our behalf. The square became even more of a heralded gathering spot for citizens at that time.

Did you know that colour deficiency affects 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women? Most colour deficient people see images just as clearly as the rest of us, they just don’t see the red, green and blue light spectrums the same way.

The buildings surrounding have housed businesses such as hotels, inns, restaurants, saloons and stables for decades and are still in good use today.

Isn’t it amazing how so much has changed and how so much remains the same?

The human eye has photoreceptors that sit on the retina at the back of the eye and send messages to the brain. There are two types; rods and cones. The rods are sensitive to light and the cones pick up colour. Each of the cones carries one of three different photoreceptors; red, green or blue. Mixing together the information received by all the different cones is what allows us to see the colours around us. When there is a malfunction, it changes the way the colour is perceived. For the number below, some people may not see the 4 or the 2 and for some, they may not see the entire 42.

I think our forefathers would have been impressed watching the Businesses of Streetsville and the Municipal, Provincial and Federal governments all working together to re-establish a space as a vibrant location for get together.

There is truly a sense of reflection today about our heritage and how we got here. There is a sense of excitement about the future growth of our Town, and certainly there is a sense of accomplishment about building a new Village Square that we’re proud to officially open.

Colour deficiency is usually genetically caused and sometimes it is linked to some diseases such as diabetes and multiple sclerosis. Some have it develop with age or as a result of different medications.

On behalf of the over 300 businesses in Streetsville, I welcome you to the new Village Square and encourage you to enjoy your time with us!

Halloween is Brewing with Fun in the Village!

Next month, Halloween will be in full swing in Streetsville with some family fun events that are sure to get you and your family in the Halloween spirit!

Upon departure from this event, complimentary loot bags will be handed out to the first 300 children. Loot bags are filled with yummy treats and surprises your children will love. This Halloween event caters to younger children (ages 3-8). Dress your children up in their costumes and come out for Halloween fun in the village. While Spooktacular is a free event, the Streetsville BIA asks that families bring non-perishable food items for the Eden Community Food Bank.

Zombie Community Ride Right before Spooktacular commences on Saturday, October 24, 2014 at 2:00 p.m., watch out for mysterious cyclists invading the village! Zombie Ride will also be returning with two bike rides: a short 5 km kid’s route and a longer 15 km route for adults. Both rides begin at 1:30 p.m., meeting at the Streetsville Cemetery entrance. Routes circle around the perimeters of the village and finish at Murphy’s Ice Cream Parlour, where cyclists can enjoy a complementary ice cream, courtesy of event sponsor Toronto Pearson Airport. Following the 5 km ride, children can attend Spooktacular down the road, while parents complete the full 15 km route.

Spooktacular Streetsville’s most talked about Halloween event Spooktacular returns on Saturday, October 24th from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Vic Johnston Community Centre. This year Spooktacular is celebrating its 9th year and you can expect a range of fun and interactive activities for your child to enjoy and take part in!

Pumpkin Parade Halloween fun continues with Streetsville’s Pumpkin Parade on Sunday, November 1st in the Streetsville Village Square. Save your carefully decorated Jack-O-Lanterns and bring them along to the parade! The Streetsville Pumpkin Parade takes place at Streetsville Village Square from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with pumpkins scheduled to be lit up for 7:00 p.m. This community event gives residents the opportunity to share their creativity with their neighbours and spend some quality time with their families. Pumpkin carving skills will be assessed and a prize will be given to the most original Jack-O-Lantern at the parade! The idea is to bring your pumpkin and leave it in the square. Pumpkins will then be collected and composted. So hold onto your pumpkins, and bring them to Streetsville Village Square on November 1st for this family fun event!

The Banquet Hall at Vic Johnston’s will be decked out in festive Halloween décor. The kids will enjoy crafts, face painting, story time, balloon animals, music time and much more! Various craft stations will be set up, giving your child the opportunity to explore their creativity and participate in making play-dough sculptures, painting and colouring, jewelry making and other craft experiences.

Other favourite happenings at Spooktacular include the engaging library and music activities offered. The reading of interactive Halloween stories, brought to you by The Streetsville Library will captivate the children.

Students can also sing-along to Halloween songs and learn some new festive tunes.

COMMUNITY CORNER Walking Tours of Historic Streetsville The three hour tours start at the Streetsville BIA office, 280 Queen Street South in Streetsville. With the highest concentration of historic buildings in the City, the popular walking tours let local residents and visitors learn about what it was like to live in the bustling town over 100 years ago.

The final dates for 2015 are Saturday, September 12th 10 am - noon and Sunday, October 18th 1 – 4 pm. This very popular walk is a great outing, introduction to the history and wonderful Village heritage of Streetsville.

Streetsville Village Square: The Most Happening Place in the Village

By Lindsay Howe Streetsville Village Square has been the talk of the town this summer! While passing through the village whether walking, biking or driving, you will notice that the square is usually in full swing both during the week and on the weekends. Free events and activities take place in the square on a regular basis, encouraging community involvement and interaction among members.

Terry Fox Run The annual Terry Fox Run, organized by the Streetsville Lions Club, will be held on Sunday, September 20 at Memorial Park. This 10-kilometer route follows the Credit River and Culham Trail, is a scenic and safe way for experienced runners and families of all kinds to participate by running, riding or walking. A mass start begins at 9 a.m., and everyone is invited to join in!

Registration opens at 8:15 a.m. and runs until 11 a.m. Donation forms can be downloaded from the Terry Fox Foundation website at www.terryfox.org.

Many of you have come out to participate in such activities as: yoga, outdoor movie night and Latin dance nights. Others make it a part of their weekly routine to join a friend in the square for a latte or an ice cream. The village square has become the perfect romantic spot for couples enjoying a tasty treat at one of the tables or benches.

Streetsville Village Square is centrally located in the heart of the village, with an abundance of shops, services, eateries and parks right at your fingertips! After spending some time in the square, couples and families also like to take advantage of the breathtaking Credit River by taking a stroll through Vic Johnston Park, or Culham Trail to take in the sights and sounds of nature.

Summer Events and Activities Musical entertainment has also been in full swing in the square, with concerts by various local musical groups. Performances this summer included: the Mississauga Pops and the Mississauga Arts Council Limelight Youth Concert.

Streetsville Village Square hosted Pride in Peel festival, featuring live entertainment, a march, free ice-cream and coffee, as well as a Community Fair. The Streetsville community also celebrated Canada’s birthday on Canada Day with loads of entertainment and contests, a BBQ hosted by The Rotary and free birthday cake provided by The Lion’s Club. Children enjoyed such activities as crafts, balloon animals and face painting. To top if all off, the night ended with a spectacular fireworks show!

Notice of Annual General Meeting The Annual General Meeting of the Vic Johnston Centre Inc. will be held on Wednesday, September 30th 2015 at 7pm. The meeting will take place in the Vic Johnston Community Centre - Hazel McCallion Banquet Hall located at 335 Church Street, in Streetsville.

Farmers’ Market prepares for fall The Streetsville Lions Friends and Farmers’ Market is open every Saturday until Thanksgiving weekend October 10th. Farmers’ Market hours are 8 am to 1 pm and the market is gearing up for the fall. The Farmers’ Market provides seasonal Ontario grown fruits and vegetables to the residents of Streetsville and supports local farmers.

Families have loved outdoor movie nights in the square and have come out to enjoy some great flicks, including popular Disney films. As an end of summer treat, on Friday, August 28th, children gathered in the square, delighted for the viewing of the ever-popular Frozen! To top it all off, princess characters Elsa, Anna, Snow White and Cinderella also made an appearance to greet the excited boys and girls. In addition to the screening of the film, the children enjoyed photos with Elsa and Anna, singing and dancing on stage and a special story time.

In addition to seasonal fresh produce, the Streetsville Lions Friends and Farmers’ Market supports local entrepreneurs in Mississauga. Featured vendors carry various items such as crafts and specialty goods.

It has been an action packed, fun-filled summer in Streetsville Village Square. The fun continues with fall events and activities, as well as a classic car show! Ward 11 update – by Councillor George Carlson The City of Mississauga is introducing a new stormwater charge, which will be included in the Region of Peel water bill beginning on January 1, 2016.

The stormwater charge is a dedicated source of funding that will be invested directly into the City’s $1.8 billion stormwater system to ensure it is kept in good working order and avoid costly future repairs and flood damage. Stormwater refers to the rain and melted snow that flows from properties into the streets and down into the storm drains; this water then flows through a large network of pipes and waterways directly into Lake Ontario. Mississauga has extensive stormwater infrastructure with a total replacement value of $1.8 billion dollars. This stormwater infrastructure consists of:

Medium Tier - Medium single detached homes Rooftop Area: 151.1 -194.0 m2 Billing Units: 1.0 Properties in the “medium” tier are assessed one billing unit as the area of one billing unit (267m2) is the average hard surface area found on a single detached residential property in Mississauga.

The implementation of the stormwater charge will result in approximately $6.7million being shifted away from the municipal tax base in the 2016 budget, which amounts to a reduction of approximately $25 per household.

A significant proportion of Mississauga’s stormwater infrastructure was installed in the last 50 years. This infrastructure, which has a replacement value of $1.8 billion, is aging and nearing the end of its lifecycle. The stormwater charge will cover repair and replacement costs that the City can no longer afford to pay through the property tax base or through development charges. Mississauga is a rapidly growing city, and with the increased population and more businesses operating in Mississauga, the amount of water running off hard/impermeable surfaces, such as roofs and parking lots is increasing. Furthermore, climate change patterns have brought heavier rainfalls and rapidly melting snow, and there is much more stormwater entering our stormwater infrastructure than previous years, which is causing costly wear and tear on the aging infrastructure.

Recent incidents of flooding in the city from major rainstorms have also demonstrated that the stormwater infrastructure has been unable to handle the increased stormwater run-off from so much hard/impermeable surfaces in the city, such as streets, driveways, and roofs.

Christian rode off in a brand new bike. Other prizes were given away for the most fish, smallest fish and the most unusual catch.

Since 2011, the City has been looking into options beyond the property tax base and development charges to support current and future stormwater management and infrastructure needs, and a Stormwater Financing Study was undertaken. The Study was completed in 2012 and identified a stormwater charge as a dedicated source of funding that is needed to manage current and future stormwater and infrastructure needs.

Municipalities across North America and Canada are facing similar challenges with regard to stormwater management and infrastructure needs, and there are presently over 1500 municipalities in North America, including 19 in Canada, who have implemented stormwater charges to fund stormwater utilities. In Ontario, the municipalities of Kitchener, Waterloo, London, Aurora, St. Thomas and Richmond Hill have all implemented stormwater charges. Across Canada, the municipalities of Halifax, Regina, Saskatoon, Calgary, Edmonton, St. Albert, Strathcona County, Pitt Meadows, Richmond, West Vancouver, Surrey, White Rock, and Langley have also implemented stormwater charges as dedicated sources of funding.

The calculation of the stormwater charge is the same for all properties, and each property will receive a stormwater assessment. The stormwater charge is calculated by multiplying the stormwater rate by the number of stormwater billing units assessed for a property. The stormwater rate will be reviewed each year by Council as part of the City’s annual budget process. The number of billing units assessed for a property is determined by the tier under which the property is categorized. Each residential property is categorized into one of five tiers based on the size of its rooftop area. The City is using the rooftop area as a predictor of the total amount of hard surface area on a property. For this purpose, the surface area will be considered a “flat roof.” The height (or pitch) of your roof will not be part of the calculation. The residential tiers, areas, and billing units are as follows:

Doors Open 2015 At the only scheduled location within the GTA, Heritage Mississauga is pleased to present Canadigm’s “Souterrain Impressions”, a cross-Canada art exhibition of 3-D reproductions of the chalk carvings of regimental badges and messages to family, done in the caves of Vimy Ridge during the First World War in 1917.

Carvings completed by heroes like Pte. Oscar Green, a veteran of No.2 Company who raised the alarm and fought a German combat unit armed with only “a broken rifle, minus bolt and bayonet”; Pte. Green was stabbed “a dozen times with German bayonets”, finally succumbing to a gunshot wound to the head on August 15, 1917. Although originally born in Finland, this 31 year old blue eyed man gave his life fighting for the Canadian Forces at Vimy. Pte. Green paid the ultimate price for peace and as he waited in the subterranean world below the battlefield, he carved his regimental badge both as a way to pass the time but also in pride and memory of his fellow brothers in arms.

The exhibition also includes other carvings and images of the cave systems at Vimy and the story of Canadigm’s work in developing the exhibition. Working in conjunction with The Durand Group, a British organization, Zenon Andrusyszyn and Stephen Weed from Canadigm have worked tirelessly with a number of volunteers to bring this exhibit to Canada. Heritage Mississauga has also been fortunate to secure grant monies from the Community Foundation of Mississauga which has allowed them to bring this free exhibit to the community.

Come and see these incredible carvings and stories, at this unique exhibit at the Stonebrook Condominium Sales Centre, 2007 Lakeshore Rd West. (N.E. corner of Southdown Rd & Lakeshore Rd. W.) Mississauga. The grand opening is on September 26 at Mississauga’s Doors Open event and will remain in the City until the end of November; an historic interpreter will be available to answer any questions, before it moves on to the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.

SHL – Providing Opportunity for All

By Mark Trozzo Over the last five years, the Streetsville Hockey League has enjoyed a rise in registration and an increased number of volunteers. The word is out that the SHL is providing a fun and diverse experience for all participants. The commitment to delivering a quality program begins at the grassroots level, as children learn the skills (on and off ice) required to be active participants, while building confidence that can serve them well in all aspects of life.

Are you one of the 8.1 million Canadians who is an informal caregiver?

Eighty percent of home care to seniors is provided by loved ones, family and friends known as informal caregivers’, who often do not have access to hands-on skills training.

The Mississauga Halton Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) Regional Learning Centre (RLC) is a new initiative that is strengthening the skills and abilities of direct care providers including informal caregivers in our communities through education, development and focused learning. It is located at 2030 Bristol Circle, Suite 202, at the QEW and Winston Churchill.

Mississauga Halton LHIN RLC courses are free to community members and are taught by registered nurses and an occupational therapist.

If your child is new to skating or hockey, the Learn to Skate and Stick and Puck programs are perfect opportunities to develop the basic skills required to play. Offered on a weekly basis, the Learn to Skate program teaches children stability and builds confidence as they begin to stride, turn and stop. Stick and Puck is designed for the child who is not quite ready for a hockey program but is interested in skating and using a hockey stick.

The Stick and Puck program uses fun games to teach stick/puck handling, shooting, passing and much more. Fun and improvement are the core goals of these two wonderful programs.

The first session for caregivers was held in June 2015 and focused on safe lifts and transfers. Participants learned about the safe use of home health care equipment and proper body mechanics in the fully equipped Mississauga Halton LHIN RLC skills lab. Participants also had the opportunity to learn from other caregivers while having a light dinner. The session provided practical experience with participants stating that the “information and hands on application was meaningful” and that they appreciated the “helpful team and environment.” The next session for informal caregivers is on the topic of Coping with Hearing Loss, and will be on Tuesday, September 22, 2015 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Seniors Life Enhancement Centres (SLEC) at 2030 Bristol Circle, Suite 120 in Oakville. A representative from the Canadian Hearing Society will be speaking about the signs of hearing loss, communication strategies, and how to access funding for hearing devices.

If your child is interested in learning the game of hockey, the two-year IP program (ages 5-6) provides the perfect mix of fun, development and competition. Several children have entered IP1 or IP2 without the ability to stand on skates and by the end of the season they are flying around the ice! Each team is named after an NHL team and will practice twice a week. Through a program influenced by Frontline Hockey School and the SHL Coach Development Strategy, the children are ready for novice hockey.

In some cases, children who have started skating for the first time in IP2 have found themselves playing select hockey the very next year.

For players who are preparing for their upcoming house-league season within the SHL, the league provides an optional training camp. The SHL believes that the level of play should not limit opportunity. House league players should have the opportunity to develop and play more hockey; just like a rep player. The SHL knows that children playing house league love the game as much as any other child playing an elite level. Through Frontline Hockey development sessions, training camps and the very successful Stingers / Derby’s (Select) program, along with the Sabres tournament teams, the SHL is providing a unique hockey experience.

A Closer Look at the Face of Autism

Local film maker to produce film to raise awareness about the potential of people living with autism Background on Avnish’s Journey Avnish Puri was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) at the age of 4. The doctors cautioned Avnish’s parents about their son’s lack of potential and ‘not so bright future’. The administration at his school wanted Avnish to be placed in the Special-Ed program, because they felt he should be surrounded by others who are ‘like him’. Avnish’s parents refused to have him placed in the program because they were confident this was not the right place for him to reach his full potential. This quickly proved to be the right decision for Avnish.

Instead of being discouraged by their son’s condition, his parents decided to recant the misconceptions and stigma surrounding autism. They quickly became advocates for the potential of people fighting with autism. Avnish and his parents decide to concentrate on his greatness and capabilities, instead of his challenges. It is this unwavering optimism and support from his parents that has set Avnish up for success.

making a short film. The film is entitled The Unframed Window. The aim of the film is to help Avnish and his family in their mission to raise awareness to break the stigma associated with autism. After its completion, the film will be submitted to major and minor film festivals.

Avnish’s mother, Yojna taught Avnish sign language when he was not able to communicate, followed by English and Hindi. Avnish has become a very talented artist, and his paintings have generated a buzz within the community. His artistic ability speaks to the strong potential of people living with autism. Avinish’s remarkable artwork has even attracted the attention of a local filmmaker, Nate Shepard!

Avnish’s entire family is very proud of him and his accomplishments.

Beaming with pride and optimism about his future they state, “Our son’s journey is just beginning and we know that it will be truly wonderful and full of colour!”

Summer Celebrations in Streetsville

Canada Day and Civic Holiday festivities are fading into the rear view mirror and Labour Day is upon us soon: what a great time to reflect on Mississauga’s amazing spirit of celebration. Summer in this city is a time of balloons and street food, outdoor music and fireworks – and as a long-time resident I really enjoy how easy it is to have fun in Mississauga.

As the summer is coming to an end it reminds me of how fast my kids are growing up. Since June, they have all turned a year older and they seem to have shot up like sunflowers do at this time of year. But yet it still seems like yesterday that they were all only babies!

We’re Canada’s sixth largest city and home to 752,000 residents and every major holiday gives plenty of opportunity for many of us to go out and enjoy ourselves.

But our fun isn’t limited to the big holidays alone – we have so many events and activities, especially in summer, that it would be impossible to detail all of them in the scope of a blog post. But here are some of my favourites: Movie Nights Streetsville Square Many people bring a blanket and some comfy chairs and watch a movie under the stars in Streetsville Square.

This summer our family has seen many individual accomplishments and growth.

Streetsville Lion’s Farmer’s Market I grew up in Guelph, Ontario, just a stone’s throw from some amazing farmer’s markets—one in my own home town itself, and two more very well-known markets in Kitchener and St. Jacob’s. My family also has roots in the Mennonite tradition, and so there’s a part of me that really appreciates a stroll among the stalls of the people who feed us, our farmers. The Streetsville Lion’s Farmer’s Market operates every Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm all summer and through to Thanksgiving.

Nolan has conquered getting up on one ski and loves to ski around the lake with his three cousins at the same time and when on the knee board finishes with a 360.

Mckenzie has also taken to the knee board and is able to get up on her own when starting from her belly and she is able to swim four docks over and back to go to the slide by herself.

Graydon is jumping off the dock and swimming up a storm without a life jacket and has developed a love of the purple board, the precursor to skiing in our family and has become quite a hotdog.

All of these accomplishments have helped each of them grow and develop their self-esteem and are making them into amazing young people who will carry their new confidences into the coming year to help them face the challenges that lie ahead. The summer seems to have gone by quite quickly but when looking back at all that has been done, I guess the old saying still holds true “Time flies when you are having fun.”

So as we think about heading back to the routine of fall and winter let’s try and remember that life is a journey. It is not just the destination that counts but all the stops in between that help make us who we are.

Fresh Air Fitness As an avid cyclist I get most of my exercise on my bike but many people in Mississauga appreciate the classes offered in Streetsville Square. Free Yoga in the Streetsville Village Square – Sundays 9:30am-10:30am.

Canned Heat headlines Southside Shuffle and celebrates 50 years on the road

It has been said that the only constant is change. How true. Now, more so than ever!

Canned Heat, the famous band that zoomed to world-wide fame after performing at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and the Woodstock Music and Art Fair in 1969, is coming to Port Credit to headline this year’s Southside Shuffle, Canada’s premier blues and jazz festival. This year’s festival will be held September 11 – 13, 2015.

What we have taken for granted in the past has serious implications going forward into the future. If you have read my articles previously in this paper you will know that we are big proponents of planning and preparing for what the future may bring.

With the lazy days of summer coming to an end and fall and winter soon upon us, we have had time to reflect on the state of the world as it exists today. What we have realized in our office is that there are big changes coming to all of us and we need to be aware of these changes and how they will affect us. We believe that every job and every business today is in jeopardy to some extent.

Between the global economies, outsourcing to Asia, automation, technology and the number of new apps that are filling our lives today, we all will be affected. We may think we are invincible but we are not. If we do not pay heed to the threat we may not be able to live in the lifestyle that we are becoming accustomed to. We know there are doubters out there, we know many will call us “Chicken Little”, but hopefully there are those of you who will reflect on this article and say, yes, this could be me.

This popular boogie-blues band formed in Los Angeles in 1965 and this year celebrates a 50th anniversary.

“We are so excited to have Canned Heat as part of our line-up this year, especially as the band celebrates this milestone anniversary,” said festival founder Chuck Jackson, the legendary blues singer with The Downchild Blues Band.

Our business is a professional accounting firm. You look at us and think, they prepare tax returns, they prepare corporate financial statements, and they look to the past. While many accounting firms do operate this way, we don’t. We look at how technology has changed our business. We also look at what the future holds for our business. It is changing. As with many bands who enjoy longevity, Canned Heat has seen its fair share of tragedies over the years, including the death of two co-founders, Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson in 1970 and Bob “The Bear” Hite in 1981. The band continued though with a revolving door of musicians including the late Henry Vestine, Ronnie Baron, Walter Trout and Junior Watson. In the 1990s, Canned Heat’s original manager from the 1960s, Skip Taylor, returned to the fold, and he brought together the original three who played Woodstock – drummer Adolfo “Fito” de la Parra, bassist Larry Taylor and guitarist Harvey Mandel. Sadly, Mandel has been battling cancer and undergone a number of surgeries. He is now cancer-free, and the band hopes for his return. But meanwhile, Canned Heat welcomed back another band veteran, guitarist John “JP” Paulus, who played bass for John Mayal.

The Canada Revenue Agency will have your information for the majority of your tax returns and you will either agree to the return presented to you, or you will upload additional information to support your return. We see changes coming and we are prepared.

Canned Heat performs on the Sab Memorial Stage, sponsored by Heath & Sherwood, on Saturday, September 12 at 11 p.m. Other acts who will perform on the four Main Stages during the weekend of festivities include Bobby Rush Big Band, the Johnny Max Band, Danny Marks, Susie Vinnick, Kenny Blues Boss Wayne, Cheryl Lescom and the Tucson Choir Boys, and of course, the Juno award-winning Downchild Blues Band, who will wrap up the festival on Sunday, September 13 at 6 p.m.

New ErinoakKids Mississauga headquarters: promise kept!

With many capital projects having a lifetime between conception and operation that stretches nearly a decade – sometimes longer – that ‘closure’ can feel good. So it was with the ground-breaking in May for the new Mississauga headquarters for ErinoakKids.

and for kids whose life gains both purpose and hope after what ErinoakKids can do. Now after the site selection, acquisition and choice of a contractor, that commitment is a construction project that is underway.

I’ve walked through the expanded maternity suite at Credit Valley Hospital that I helped get funded, and sometimes take the GO train home to Lisgar.

To see a new mom, or to hear the conductor say, “Lisgar, next stop. Lisgar,” is to feel what public service in an elected office is really about. Good for the ErinoakKids community of kids, families, administrators and caregivers!

In the spring of 2007, with then-Erinoak announcing its new name, now ErinoakKids, I spoke with the hundreds of parents assembled, and made a commitment that I would work with the Province to allow ErinoakKids to get out of a dozen older and rented spaces into a new children’s treatment centre purpose-built to assist kids and young adults with learning disabilities, autism and a host of other challenges.

It meant the formation of a charitable foundation, as the local community must raise some of the capital expansion money locally. It is as true for ErinoakKids as it is for the hospital. It meant the new foundation had to examine its assets and engage in some strong fund-raising to meet its donation targets. It meant that Mississauga, Brampton and Oakville MPPs had to stay on top of the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, and get our project (ErinoakKids is Ontario’s largest children’s treatment centre) to the top of the capital projects list. Everyone lived up to their commitments, did their work on time, and the Province granted the go-ahead, allocating Ontario’s share of the capital funds.

In 2011, the Province announced that new ErinoakKids facilities would be built in Brampton, Mississauga and Oakville, allowing ErinoakKids, when the three new centres open, to let move from more than a dozen scattered places into three state-of-the-art centres.

At the ground-breaking on May 8th, I mentioned the people who had become the very first constituents to come and visit me after my 2003 election, to tell me about life in a family taking the life journey with an autistic child. The commitment became (and remains) a very personal one to these families,

Value For Money Investing Gordon O. Stockman, BComm., CPA, CA, CFP, CIM Vice President – Financial Planning, Efficient Wealth Management Inc. are a key point of discussion between clients and their financial planners even with no trade pending. Securities advice is often necessary and desired from the planner and should be allowable when experience and competence are present.

Ontario is launching a review of regulations relating to financial advisors and planners to help investors and consumers make informed investment and financial choices, as well as enhance oversight in this sector. Unlike many financial service sectors in Ontario, financial advisors and planners are not subject to general regulatory oversight, which could leave consumers and investors vulnerable. This review will focus on addressing this gap by examining more tailored regulations. To conduct such a review the Ontario government appointed an “Expert Committee to Consider Financial Advisory and Financial Planning Policy Alternatives.” The committee is taking submissions from the public and I thought I would share excerpts of my submission to the committee.

Professional Financial Planners need to be able to discuss securities with individuals.

OSC’s requirement for registration of individuals providing advice on securities is proper but too narrow. The industry knows that advice is what is sought first but registration is focused on trade execution only. A method to register individuals for the provision of advice only would meet the public`s needs for seamless holistic advice. It is not necessary, nor should it be desirable to have all Financial Planners registered to sell securities, but they should be able to provide advice on them with the appropriate experience and education.

My Journey as a Financial Planner My name is Gordon Stockman. I am an Advice for a Fee Financial Planner. I have decided it is best to tell you a story. It is my story of the highlights of my journey as a financial planner. I trust it will be engaging enough to get you through to my final singular notion.

The Expert Committee is asked to consider that any resultant financial planning regulations should consider the possibility of providing “security advice only”, without trade registration, when assets are held in a properly regulated account.

Financial Planning services are incomplete if we cannot provide specific comments, alternative solutions or second opinions about the client’s investments.

In 1995, I decided to become a financial planner. I flirted with returning to my roots as a Chartered Accountant (CA 1983) delivering tax and business advice to professionals and small businesses, but instead chose to be more forward looking and become a future orientated planner not a preparer of past financials and tax returns.

Efficient Wealth Management Inc. was created to provide unbiased, independent, superior financial planning advice, on an Advice for a Fee basis. Our extended mission is to bring portfolio manager services bundled with full financial planning to investors with less than 1 million dollars. We have been designing and utilizing strategic ETF portfolios for over 12 years, letting us return control of the cost of financial planning and investment management to the investor.

In 1995, it was near impossible to get a family or an individual to pay for a financial plan. Few knew what it was and fewer still knew they needed it, but most important it was available everywhere for free, courtesy of the mutual fund industry. Selling against free is remarkably hard. So in January 1996, I joined a national mutual fund distributor. At that time the distributor was starting to roll out the most extensive laptop based financial planning platform in the industry. They were making it possible for all of their representatives to develop as skilled planners, they were mandating the attainment of the CFP designation within 5 years of your appointment (CFP 1998) and they had customers. I would just have to get used to commissions. As my skills grew, it became ever more apparent that all financial planning results do not necessarily lead to the purchase of that company’s mutual fund. Having trained as a Chartered Accountant, I was bothered in every way by the lack of objectivity and independence, real or perceived. Failing to remain objective and independent hampers the ability to provide a truly honest assessment. Getting paid only if a sale was made rendered all planning and advice suspect. If I put the client‘s interest solely before mine, sales would be challenging and they were. An objective and independent model, that put the client’s interest first was needed.

In 2003, my wife and two friends, with business advice from me, rolled out a new model, Flat Fee for Service Financial Planning. Thus Efficient Wealth Management Inc. (EWM) would do the financial planning and the investment implementations would be through an exclusive outside Fee for Service referral arrangement. Yes, it was still not time for a pure Advice for a Fee model because of client costs. In addition to the usual FREE competition, it was evident that if a client did choose to pay for independent planning, such advice could not result in a much needed cost savings from their investment advisor.

Gordon is a Chartered Accountant (CA), a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and a Chartered Investment Manager (CIM). He has close to 20 years of experience in Financial Planning and Portfolio Management and over 35 years in Tax Planning. Gordon is a frequent guest on television and has written numerous articles on investing and financial planning. He has also taught Financial Services and Accounting courses at local colleges.

In 2005, I left mutual funds to join EWM. I was for the first time in over 9 years, not registered to buy and sell mutual funds. My objectivity, independence and integrity were restored but my ability to be completely effective was not. Many clients followed me. I updated many plans or initiated new ones. However, I was unable to discuss with any of them, the mutual funds they owned. The same funds they acquired when I was their representative. I have searched hard for a business term to describe this quandary, but the best I came up with is “It’s silly.”

Financial planning entails many things: cashflow planning, tax optimization, risk assessments for capacity and tolerance, withdrawal strategies, use of guaranteed instruments and asset allocations to support all. However, at the implementation stage as a non-regulated individual our voice must be silent with regard to the investment selection, even when our knowledge of both the individual and the security is superior.

For the past 10 years, I remained un-regulated by IIROC, MFDA or FSCO and the OSC. It was not that I did not want to be registered; it was I did not want to be registered to trade. OSC requires registration of individuals providing advice on securities either direct to them or through a SRO. However, ALL methods of registration result in the ability to trade whether at the behest of the client or with discretion for the client. Any organization you joined was a “trading” organization.

I followed all OSC rules carefully though frustratingly. Advice on securities was not proffered. Exclusive referral arrangements made it easier but being misunderstood by many did not.

People seek advisors not for the primary reason of transaction execution, but advice – including with respect to taxes, estates, retirement and risk management.

Transaction execution should certainly remain the role of IIAC or MFDA member.

However, a more holistic approach would recognize that the assets within a plan
