A wealthy patroness, Mme de Meck, came to his rescue with the proposal to support him with a monthly allowance that freed him from money worries and enabled him to compose in freedom. His mood lifted and among the works he wrote that year was the magnificent Symphony no. 4. The lush, swooning melodies of the fourth movement are sure to make your heart soar with delight.

Streetsville BIA Boundary Expansion

Streetsville Village Square Update

The Streetsville BIA welcomes 49 new members!

By: Lindsay Howe

By: Lindsay Howe

The Streetsville BIA is excited to announce the expansion of its current boundaries.

Plans to revitalize and transform the Streetsville Village Square to improve the quality and functionality of the space are well underway.

The by-law was officially passed by The City of Mississauga on December 11th, 2013. The village BIA has expanded its borders to encompass the north and south end Streetsville. The majority of this new area extends the BIA along Queen Street to Britannia Road in the north, as well as south to the train tracks (just past Reid Drive). The Streetsville BIA welcomes all new members and is happy to reintroduce these merchants to the BIA community.

Phase one of the construction was completed last August, Enersource removed the redundant poles and overhead wires, installing underground wiring. Phase two of the reconstruction is set to begin in April when the snow clears. By the beginning of July the construction will largely be completed, and the road will be re-opened to traffic following the Canada Day weekend. The final completion of all remaining minor site work should be finished by the end of July. The Streetsville Village Square will be transformed into a dynamic gathering place for the whole community.

The boundary expansion has made room for 49 new businesses. This brings the total number of businesses in the Streetsville BIA up to 309! This expansion means a stronger voice for BIA members, infrastructure improvements and stability funding. The expansion has allowed for some of Streetsville’s most thriving businesses to be added to the village boundaries. The Streetsville BIA is now home to an even wider range of businesses and service at your convenience. As the winner of the best BIA Streetscape for three years in a row by Streetscape Mississauga, the Streetsville Village already holds the reputation of one of Mississauga’s most beautiful neighbourhoods. The village BIA takes on many projects and initiatives to keep the streets and parks beautified and clean for its residents. In an effort to provide a consistently beautiful, well-maintained village, the Streetsville BIA will expand their beautification and maintenance plans to encompass the new areas. Beginning in the spring, you can expect to see the same banners, light fixtures, flower boxes and hanging planters on either ends of Queen Street South, and straight across the village.

The work undertaken this spring and summer will include the following upgrades and amenities: - Upgrading services: Electrical connections and potable water - Upgrading street and pedestrian level lighting - Incorporating a sound system for site programming - Resurfacing and re-grading the street - Relocating and refurbishing the Cenotaph Renowned architect Randy Jamieson is the Senior Project Manager, and his design will transform the square into a vibrant gathering place for the whole community. The new square will provide outdoor entertainment for various occasions, with a main stage covered by a canopy, and a quality sound system. More trees and flowers will be added, to increase the natural ambiance of the square and make it more of a green space. The updates and expansion will allow the square to be utilized properly. The outdoor space promises to be green and comfortable, pedestrian friendly, and capable of hosting regular community events and activities.

Roy’s Flowers is one of Streetsville’s longest running businesses. The flower shop was honoured at the AGM this year for an outstanding 35+ years of service. Camille has been with Roy’s Flowers from the very beginning. Roy’s Flowers opened up in 1978, and Camille began working there only a year later. On October 12th, 2012 the original owner Roy retired and Camille took over. Roy’s Flowers was previously a BIA member at their old location at 89 Queen Street, south of Ontario Street. When Roy’s Flowers moved locations to just north of Ontario Street, they were no longer within the official BIA boundaries. The Streetsville BIA congratulates Roy’s Flowers on 35+ years in business, and reintroduces Roy’s Flower to the BIA community.

Many of Streetsville’s most celebrated events and ceremonies already take place at Streetsville Village Square. The revitalization of the square will make it more accessible to host events and accommodate a much larger crowd. When it is completed, Streetsville Village Square will be the perfect setting for movie nights, outdoor concerts, weekend markets, and much more. An added bonus, with the village streets bustling, traffic to local businesses will increase. The new square will be a vibrant and exciting public space for everyone to enjoy and take part in. It will definitely be worth the wait!

Camille is very pleased to become a full BIA member again and looks forward to taking part in the BIA initiatives and enjoying some of the perks that come along with the membership. Camille states, “I am particularly enthusiastic about the streetscape improvements that will be happening across the north end of the village; looking forward to the addition of street banners, lampposts and flowers.” Like many of us, Camille is ecstatic about the upcoming redevelopments to the area, particularly the completion of the village square.

The Streetsville BIA appreciates your patience and understanding during this period of reconstruction. Please note that when the construction commences in April, Main Street Road will be closed, between Queen Street South and Church Street. Rest assured, Main Street will be accessible to pedestrians at all times, and the businesses will remain open. For more information visit www.villageofstreetsville.com. The Streetsville BIA holds its Annual General Meeting

Toronto MLS Sales Up in February

By: Lindsay Howe

Toronto Real Estate Board President Dianne Usher announced that February 2014 home sales reported by Greater Toronto Area REALTORS® were up by 2.1 per cent compared to the same period last year. Total February sales amounted to 5,731 compared to 5,613 last year.

The Streetsville BIA’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) took place on Monday, March 3rd. Despite the bitterly cold weather that night, there were a large number of BIA members and community members who made it out to Vic Johnston Community Centre Banquet Hall. Attendees had the opportunity to meet and greet the other BIA members, enjoy some food and drinks and discuss what 2014 holds for Streetsville.

“Despite the continuation of inclement weather in February, we did see a moderate uptick in sales activity last month. The sales increase was largely driven by resale condominium apartments. New listings of resale condominium apartments were up on a year-over-year basis, giving buyers ample choice. This is in contrast to the listings situation for singles, semis and townhomes, where supply continued to be constrained. Some would-be buyers had difficulty finding a home that met their needs,” said Ms. Usher. “If we see renewed growth in listings for low-rise home types, the pace of sales growth will accelerate as we move through the year,” Ms. Usher continued.

The Streetsville AGM is a great networking and socializing opportunity for the BIA and community members. This is the time to go over important areas of business including budgets, welcoming new members, and informing members of new projects. The Board of Directors each addresses important areas of business from beautification and maintenance plans, to festivals and events, to marketing and promotions. The AGM also provides a good opportunity for members to ask questions and share their views.

The average selling price for February 2014 sales was up by 8.6 per cent to $553,193, compared to the average of $509,396 reported for February 2013. The MLS® Home Price Index (HPI) Composite Benchmark was up by 7.3 per cent year-over-year. The average sale price in Mississauga for March 2014 was $503,263 according to the MLS statistics on the Toronto Real Estate board MLS system.

Each year at the AGM the Streetsville BIA formally acknowledges the outstanding individuals and businesses that are the cornerstones of our community. In addition to awarding Bruce Daley with the Community Service Award, two of Streetsville’s oldest businesses were also honoured for their remarkable years of service.

Are Video Games Harming my Child’s Eyes? By Silvia Yeomans, Queen Spectacle

Children have all sorts of handheld devices; from their iPods and smartphones to their different gaming devices that they bring, everywhere. Even to their eye exams.

• TURN ON THE LIGHTS: If the room is too dark, there is too much contrast between the screen and the surrounding area for comfortable vision. If the room is brighter, the contrast is kept to a minimum.

The consensus still remains among most eye care professionals, that video games will not harm your child’s eyes or their vision as long as you follow some simple rules. Even children with great vision sometimes complain of blurred vision when playing video games. That’s because of the prolonged focusing they do when staring at their screens. Even with all that starring, there is usually less strain involved in gaming than in doing close up work such as sewing or reading. Sitting in front of a screen for long periods can leave your eyes feeling dry and strained. If your child has uncorrected hyperopia, myopia or astigmatism, your child’s eyes could be forced to work harder to maintain a clear image when viewing the screen.

• MOVE BACK: Sit away from the screen. Looking at a screen from a distance allows for picture details to appear sharper and better defined and the screen lines and defects will be less apparent. This is a great opportunity to see how your child reacts. If your child insists on playing video games close up, book an eye examination for them with your optometrist; children who like to sit too close to the screen may be nearsighted (myopic).

Your child’s visual skills are necessary for reading and learning. To help ease the strain of video games on your child’s eyes, consider the following tips:

Symptoms like headaches, eye strain, double vision, excessive tearing, pain in the eyes or excessive blinking or squinting can be effects of playing video games, any time you experience these symptoms, you should visit your optometrist for a comprehensive eye examination. Eye exams are covered by OHIP annually for children until they are 20 years of age. Eye examinations are recommended if these symptoms arise. These may also be symptoms of more serious vision problem.

• REDUCE GLARE: Make rooms more comfortable by reducing glare and offering soft overall lighting. • REST: Encourage them to take breaks from games and computer monitors to give eyes a break. Balance their video game time with creative play (not stimulated by a screen).

This is an article that was requested by a client. If you have any questions or would like me to write about a specific topic, email me at silvia@queenspectacle.com.

• 20/20 RULE: We went to a seminar where the guest speaker taught us the 20/20 rule. It is great even for people who spend all day on the computer. Every 20 minutes, look away from the screen and blink 20 times. This will give their eyes a break from staring. Did you know that on average we blink 12 times per minute, but when we’re in front of a screen, we only blink 5 times per minute? Final result: dry eyes. Reminding your child to blink.

Nancy’s oncologist has advised that the best treatment possible is a medication called AVASTIN. Although not a cure, the hope is that it will extend Nancy’s life.

Genealogy Workshop This workshop will take place on Saturday, April 12, 2014 from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm at Heritage Mississauga, 1921 Dundas Street West, Mississauga. Speaker Ruth Blair will discuss the topics “The Genealogy Organization Top Ten List” and “Five Things You Need To Know Before Writing Your Family History”. For more info please call 905-828-8411 Ext. 0.

This medication however, is not funded by the Ontario government and Nancy’s private insurance has denied the claim for coverage. As a result of no other public or private funding, Nancy and her husband Joe are faced with the astronomical cost of almost $10,000 a month for this life extending medication indefinitely. Nancy’s family and friends have chosen to help raise funds for Nancy and her Husband, Joe to offset the cost of this necessary, life extending medication. On February 22nd 2014, at South Common Mall in Mississauga, Nancy’s friends and family held a Walk With Me, Walk-A-Thon in support of Nancy Da Costa’s, Avastin Fund. Nancy and her husband Joe would like to extend their sincere gratitude to each and every individual who pledged, walked, and/or provided raffle prizes in support of Nancy. “The response from the community has been overwhelming, thank you from the bottom of our hearts” says Da Costa. They would like to further thank Councillor George Carlson (City of Mississauga Ward 11) for being the event’s Master of Ceremonies. “We continue to hear such great reports from those in attendance” (Heather Byce). Thank you for making the time to attend the event. Finally, to Nancy’s work family at Mainway Hunter Creighton Insurance Inc. (MHC)... a special thank you to Nancy’s employers who matched all employee donations raised, resulting in a $10,000 donation collectively. Nancy’s Walk With Me, Walk–A-Thon raised $25,765. What a tremendous success! Since November, they have raised $71,035, through the WalkA-Thon and online donations. These funds will enable Nancy to have 16 treatments or 8 months of treatments. Nancy says, “Thank you to everyone who has a continued to support my Avastin Fund, I can’t believe the generosity of my family, friends and those I have never met before.... the support and love people have demonstrated is truly amazing.... Thank you from the bottom of my heart”. Nancy further states, “The Walk-A-Thon was one of the best days I have had in a long time; it was nice to be able to re-connect with my family and friends”. Ward 11 Update

By Councillor George Carlson City of Mississauga’s NEW Yard Maintenance Subsidy program During the spring and summer seasons, you will probably find yourself quite busy with yard maintenance work. If you are a senior or individual with a disability and you require financial assistance with your yard maintenance costs, I would encourage you to apply for the City’s expanded Yard Maintenance Subsidy program. The City’s existing Snow Removal Subsidy program, provided to seniors and individuals with disabilities, has been expanded to cover grass cutting as well. The expanded subsidy program is now called the Yard Maintenance Subsidy program. The expanded subsidy covers snow clearing and grass cutting services, and you must submit your receipts to the City for grass cutting or snow removal services that you receive.

After a very long winter, the spring season is finally upon us and so is Earth Week 2014. Earth Week is the largest environmental event celebrated all over the world. Over 6 million Canadians join 1 billion people in over 170 countries to participate in Earth Week events. There are many great Earth Week events that will be held across Mississauga and in the Ward 11 community. This is a great opportunity for you to help keep our City clean and green. This year, Earth Week runs from April 16 – April 22, 2014 (Earth Day is April 22, 2014). Be sure to bring your family and friends and check out these great local environmental events: 20-Minute Makeover- Tuesday, April 22nd at 2pm Join the thousands across Ontario who will volunteer for 20 minutes to pick up litter around their workplace, school or community. To participate in the 20-Minute Makeover, choose a location in your community and form a clean-up group with family, friends, or colleagues; you may also participate individually if you wish. Transit Litter Blitz- Thursday, April 24th at 7am If you take MiWay transit, Transit Security Officers will be conducting a litter awareness blitz at various transit terminals across the City, so be sure to participate if you are able to.

This subsidy is offered to seniors and individuals with disabilities who receive government income supplements, such as the Guaranteed Income Supplement and the Ontario Disability Support Program. An applicant is ineligible if there are other people living in the home who are able to do yard maintenance and snow removal. The maximum subsidy that will be provided to each eligible resident is $200, and the subsidy period runs from April 1, 2014 to March 31, 2015. Holly’s Tips: Pricing your home to sell How much your home is worth to you versus how much it is worth in the real estate market can be two different numbers. If you’re planning to sell your home, one of the most important decisions to make is price. Here are a few guidelines to help you put that ‘price tag’ on your home. • Pricing your home ‘just right’ will ensure that your home will be appraised at approximately the same values – meaning potential buyers can effectively secure financing. • The best way to determine the price you should put on your home? It’s best to look at recent, comparable sales in your neighbourhood and surrounding area. Target those comparables within a quarter to half mile radius around your home. (It helps if the homes chosen for comparables are in the same school district). Your real estate agent can put together this information for you. • The criteria for comparable homes; square footage, number of bedrooms, similar age, condition and style with comparable features and upgrades. • Once you have reviewed the comparables in your area, your agent can help you decide how your home measures up against each. As well, your agent can objectively guide you through the process of determining whether those aspects of your home which you consider ‘special’ or ‘unique’ will hold the same appeal for today’s home buyer. • Your real estate agent can also provide all the important information on market conditions and will point out any special features or deficits or your home and property that might affect your listing price.

The Bread & Honey Festival Rotary Consumer Market Home Show 2014

By Deanne Clipperton

The Bread & Honey Festival Rotary Consumer Market Home Show takes place June 7th and 8th, 2014 inside the Vic Johnston Arena.

The first weekend in June promises to be a great one as the Streetsville Founders’ Bread and Honey Festival will celebrate its 42nd birthday. It has grown to be ranked as one of the Top 100 Festivals in Ontario. It is now the second largest and longest running festival in Ontario, second only to the CNE. But it is still the only one with free Bread and Honey!

The Bread and Honey Festival attracts over 25,000 in the span of two days! An added benefit is that the proceeds go right back into the community. This is your opportunity to give back to the community by supporting this Rotary project.

This year’s festival promises many old favourite attractions but will also offer many new things to look forward too. The main stage will be offering live entertainment until 8:30 pm in the evenings which will be followed by some Electronic Dance Music. The beer garden, which has a long history with the festival, will be open this year on Friday night for a few hours of fun and socializing.

For the low price of $395, you are provided with everything you need to showcase your business or organization. This includes: • Wireless Internet • An 8’ x 10’ fully draped professional looking booth • One 15 amp electrical outlet, if needed • Fully licensed and bonded security supervision during non-show hours • Improved show advertising • Comfort and protection from the outdoors • Exclusive exhibitor lounge and washrooms • Free pancake breakfast on Sunday morning • Free exhibitor secured parking for two vehicles, within 100 metres of the show • Drive into show access for display setup and removal • Table and chair rentals as needed at cost • The warm feeling that you are helping to support worthwhile community projects such as Credit Valley Hospital, Easter Seals, local Schools, Vic Johnston Community Centre, etc.

On Saturday after you watch the parade be sure to make your way down to the park to visit the Lions carnival rides and catch the Princesses from Frozen on the Kids stage. After that, visit some exotic animals from the Bowmanville Zoo and hop on a camel for a ride. Beach volleyball is also making a debut this year. Registrations are now being accepted. So, if you want to have some fun in the sun and sand sign your team up today! You can also join in the celebration of Mississauga’s 40th anniversary by visiting a display of the Mayor’s memorabilia in the community hall. At 1:00 pm there will be a tribute to Mayor Hazel McCallion as she sets to retire at the end of this year. Following the tribute, the Streetsville Lions Club and The Mississauga Booster will be presenting the Sam McCallion Volunteer of the Year award to this year’s deserving recipient. This will be a great venue for the public recognition of volunteerism as Sam McCallion was a dedicated volunteer and one of the cofounders of the festival.

Space is limited. Register now to avoid the disappointment of having your preferred booth location taken! Send in the registration form and cheque made payable to: The Streetsville Rotary Club. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at (905) 567-6909 ex. 22 & ask for Michelle or Sue.

Family Fables - Winter Adventures in the North By Deanne Clipperton

I am finding it increasingly difficult to keep the kids active and unplugged as the Artic vortex continues a strong hold on us. When it is too cold to let the kids go out to play it is even more difficult to keep them and me from climbing the walls.

The next day we visited Matthews Sugar Bush and had our own horse drawn sleigh ride through their 210 acres. It was magical; it had snowed the night before and was snowing as we made our way through the snow covered bush that has been farmed for over a century. We had maple syrup toffee, maple syrup cotton candy and purchased a warm bottle of maple syrup to bring home. The kids did some climbing and sliding down some large snow hills and we finished the day and the Olympic events with skating on the way back home before bed. We had planned to try some ice fishing but North Bay was sold out of bait. So, that activity and the snowmobile ride to the hut will have to wait till next year, or sometime this summer if the weather continues as it has! The last event in our fun outdoor adventure was the moon light walk! It is easy to be active and unplugged when the weather cooperates and the spirit of adventure takes over! But we are ready for some warmer spring adventures!! Spring are you out there??

The winter when it is cooperating is a great time to explore the unknown and try new things and be active. Over the March Break we were able to try some new things as the temperatures was higher than -10. We created and completed a nature scavenger hunt along the Culham Trail and we walked on the frozen Credit River with friends and played in the snow. Crazy as it sounds, we travelled to North Bay, why you ask, and did we go further north when we have had enough of our own right here in the village? We went to visit Grandma and Grandpa, my husband’s family and with the visit came many new adventures for us. We experienced our own Olympics and tried out a number of new activities. We snow shoed along a trail lead by one of the three kids, each taking turns grudgingly. The leader, followed the markers and led us around a 1.5 km loop through a beautiful snow covered forest. We returned our snowshoes and had some lunch and then strapped on some cross country skis. We did not venture along the trails for this event as we stayed in the open field to get the hang of it. Todd did not put on ski’s as he was the” lifter upper” when the skis got tangled and the kids could not get up on their own. I had mine off for a while and was assisting with the lifting then decided to put some on myself, maybe not a good idea, I too needed a lift up ! All in good fun, the kids had a great time! Mckenzie took her time and got the hang of cross country skiing and now wants to get her own skis. Graydon looked like he was trying to win the giant slalom, knees and body bent over digging in deep with the poles. Nolan as usual just wanted to go as fast as he could and kept getting tangled up, his event would be the biathlon! The day ended with a pizza dinner out and a few games of pool with dad and grandpa.

Planning for a long life As a result of gains in life expectancy, most of us can plan on living longer. Today’s 65-year-olds can expect to live 17 to 20 years beyond retirement (on average)1. Even more telling, an increasing number of Canadians are reaching the age of 100. Between 2006 and 2011, the rate of population growth for this age group was 25.7%, the second most rapidly growing age group among all age groups after those aged 60 to 64 (which increased by 29.1%)2. C

The odds that you’ll live a long and healthy life after retirement are solidly in your favour – and getting better year to year. That is good news – especially if you begin to plan now for all those extra retirement years. Here are some tips to get you on track for a long and comfortable retirement. • Look at your retirement from every angle and decide on your desired lifestyle. • Enhance your expected income from investments held within an RRSP with a complementary portfolio of RRSP-eligible investments held with your RRSPs plus non-registered investments.

Richard Blake of Investors Group, hosted a Business Owners Breakfast Wednesday, March 19th It was an informative morning as businesses learned financial concepts and strategies aimed at improving the financial success of their business. They will hold their next presentation in May. Sandra Pitts presented a plague recognizing Investors Group Mississauga West’s active participation in community involvement.

• Assess your essential and discretionary spending requirements and adopt an investment strategy that will cover your needs. Include planning for such essential expenses as housing, food, clothing and medical treatments and for such discretionary expenses as travel, dining out, a new car, and so on. Take into account that your need for discretionary funds is likely to diminish over time and your need for essential expenses will probably rise as you age.

• After retirement, manage your retirement savings based on the amount of your savings, the average return on your investments, and the number of years you plan to make withdrawals.

Restyling • Repairs • Storage • New Leather and Shearling Jackets Gloves • Handbags • Wallets Do not dispose of your used or inherited fur coats or jackets. This long time Mississauga Furrier will bring new life to them. We saw an older mink coat, sheared and remodeled into an elegant reversible raincoat.

• Shelter excess capital and maximize the value of your estate with life insurance. Consider a life annuity that will provide a guaranteed regular income no matter how long you live.

ABOUT FUR STORAGE Fur hates heat. It is not the actual hair that is affected, it is the hide or leather that can dry out, become stiff and crack. The optimum storage temperature is 45 degrees F. and 50% humidity. In Bazinas Furs’ storage vaults, the room is dark which prevents bleaching and fading of the colour. Moths and insects cannot survive at that temperature. Furs that are properly stored during hot weather can last up to fifty years or more.

• Be sure to protect your income (and your spouse’s) with life insurance and supplementary disability, critical illness and long-term care health insurance. • Regularly assess your plan – checking investment performance, changes in your expense levels and any other factors that can impact your level or years of income during retirement – and revise as required.

If you decide not to use a professional storage facility, do not store your coat in a cedar closet or chest. The oils can harm the fur. Keep the furs in the coolest closet possible and always in the dark. Check frequently for insect activity - especially moths.

It’s great to know you can plan to enjoy years and years of retirement. It’s even better to know – without doubt – that your retirement income will match your retirement dreams for all your retirement years. Your professional advisor can help make sure that happens. 1 The Daily (Statistics Canada), Monday Sept. 27, 2004 – based on 2002 mortality rates 2 The Daily (Statistics Canada), Tuesday, May 29, 2012

Celebrating Our Earth: Earth Day 2014 By: Lindsay Howe

Earth Day takes place on Tuesday, April 22. Each year on Earth Day people all over the world are challenged to make positive changes to their daily habits. We all share the same planet and are each responsible for what we use and how we us it. When we use less natural resources, we help to ensure there are enough resources to go around, therefore future generations won’t run out of essential things such as clean water, air and soil. While Earth Day happens only once a year, we should celebrate our Earth on a daily basis and treat every day as though it were Earth Day. Making Earth-Friendly Choices Earth Day is the time to start making more environmentally conscious choices to keep our planet clean and fix some of the damage that has been done to our environment. Easy Earth-friendly changes include: switching to energy efficient light bulbs, using less water, walking or cycling more and buying local produce and foods. Avoid bottled water by buying and using a reusable water bottle.

Be Part of the Solution Earth day serves as a reminder to think about how we can help resolve environmental challenges by taking action to protect our planet. It is our responsibility to learn about biodiversity and take measures to help preserve the plants and animals around us. It is imperative that we rethink the way we use things and make it our objective to use less. The lifestyle choices we make are most often based on habit and convenience. We all have bad habits to break when it comes to living a more eco-friendly lifestyle. Something as simple as leaving reusable grocery bags in your car so you don’t forget to bring them to the grocery store can go a long way to help erase your carbon footprint. We can all do our part to help ensure a healthy planet for generations to come.

Recycling is a simple yet important way to reduce the pollution caused by waste. When we recycle we save energy, reduce pollution and preserve our natural resources. By creating a compost pile for our food scraps we reduce the amount of trash that goes into landfills. Composting also helps create rich soil for gardening. A popular Earth Day experience for all ages is planting trees. Not only do trees improve biodiversity and provide habitats for wildlife, trees also help keep the air clean by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. Another way to get involved is to join a community initiative to pick up litter, helping to keep the environment free of contaminants.

Value For Money Investing Get value from your advisor. Cost do matter! I am not a farmer...so why do I have silos? Many clients first approach us because they are unhappy with their current investment situation. Sure, they have concerns about when they can retire, how much should they be saving, or if they are minimizing their tax liability each year, but invariably, they are very concerned about what investments they have and what they should have. It is this need to discuss their investments that leads to an important challenge.

they believe is best for you. In other words, they need not help you with advice about a particular security, since they is going to buy it for you. Unfortunately, portfolio managers have traditionally only been available to those households with assets in excess of one million dollars to invest, so the majority of households in this country get ALL their investment advice from SALESPERSONS. To make matters worse, because of the siloing, the salesperson’s advice is only able to consider the security types they are registered for within these self containing channels. Why is all this important? Well, if you are speaking to a financial planner that is licensed as an insurance representative, do not be surprised that the ideal solution for your situation is an insurance product. It is what they are licensed to sell. If talking to a broker about your financial planning needs, do not be surprised that they do not suggest discretionary money management. They are licensed otherwise. And do not expect to be passed easily to a different advisor in a different silo, since controlling the client is the source of the revenue to the advisor.

To offer advice on an investment security in Ontario (for all effective purposes, this means all of Canada as well), you must be registered. An unapproved person cannot comment on a specific security, to a specific individual, since it might lead to a buy or a sell of the investment. You must be registered to give ADVICE about a specific investment. In Ontario (Canada) there is no securities registration available for Advice Only, so in most cases your advisor must be prepared to buy and sell as well. This situation is aggravated by your advisor needing to register in a certain category of securities or services. ‘Silos’ is the description I have for the vertical sales channels in the investment world through which advisors are registered. In the simplest terms, at the retail level, let’s consider there to be four silos with four regulators: Mutual funds, Brokerage, Insurance and Portfolio Managers. Your advisor must belong to a company or organization that is in itself registered with the four regulators. Your advisor has a duty to their sponsor organization before and above their duty to you.

Since you have less than one million to invest, you look for a “financial planner” in one of three retail channels accessible to you. Understanding the salesperson quandary, you may also consider a fee-only planner, who is proudly not registered to provide security specific advice. The mutual fund registered advisor, the “financial planner”, can thus comment on any and all mutual funds sold in Canada, but not any other securities. Insurance agents, as the “financial planner”, have a broader hand in providing nonsecurity related financial planning, since the Insurance regulators allow financial plans to be charged for. However, non-insurance related products like mutual funds, stocks, bonds and ETFs cannot be discussed. Brokers, the IIROC “financial planner”, on the other hand may discuss, stocks, bonds, ETFs and mutual funds but not insurance products unless they are also licensed. Thus, brokers have good breadth compared to mutual fund and insurance only advisors. However all three suffer three fatal flaws. 1) Their primary responsibility is to their sponsor not their client; 2) Their sponsor is a sales organization; and 3) Their test of suitability of the investment for you does not preclude them from seeking the best for them as well.

The regulators are the only path for registration. You may have noted that three of the four channels are thus “Salespersons”. So again, in order to be able to discuss an investment security with you, the advisor must be registered to sell you something. The only exception to this, is a portfolio manager, who is not registered to sell to you, they are approved to take over your assets and do what

Advice For A Fee

tirement liabilityere

An Advice for a Fee or your Fee-only planner cannot discuss any type of individual security with you, even if fully qualified to do so, due to lack of registration. Their solution is usually to manage the relationship with the registered securities person to access all the advice you need on individual securities, without exposure to a sales process, ensuring you obtain investments good for you, not them and do so at a price reflective of the value received.

Increase your income through intelligent financial planning decisions.

At EWM, we go one step further. After completion of a complete financial plan, for clients with $100,000 or more, we access for you the services of a Portfolio Manager, who is not in sales and by law must put your interest above their own. Sounds like a winning combination, doesn’t it.

Gymify is conveniently located in the heart of the village, making this new fitness studio walking or biking distance for those of us who live or work in the Streetsville area. Come check out Gymify’s quality facility, with the latest generation of equipment. Already, many people in the village are taking advantage of Gymify’s convenient location, and a membership rate that is affordable. Not only is Gymify the only gym facility in Streetsville, but they also offer a fully automated, secure facility open 24/7. With their full security system, you can access the facility anytime any day, even holidays. The benefits of becoming a Gymify member don’t stop there. An added bonus, Gymify members gain free access to Wi-Fi and computers in the lounge area. You can enjoy a complimentary coffee while you relax in the lounge before or after your workout. Gymify’s management and staff are not interested in pushing sales. They offer their clients flexible options. You can register and manage your account online, make payments and receive customer support. On top of which, there is no contracts or hidden cancellations fees. Gymify is also a personal trainer-friendly facility. Personal trainers can bring in their clients, or members can bring in their personal trainers with no overhead, as long as they are both members. Visit Gymify’s fitness studio and see why many community members are making the switch to Gymify. Gymify is located in the Centre Plaza at 128 Queen Street South, Unit 24. Community Service Award Recipient: Honouring Bruce Daley for his dedication and philanthropy By: Lindsay Howe

A remarkable individual was honoured at the Streetsville BIA’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on March 3rd. Bruce Daley received the Community Service Award for his outstanding contributions to the community over the past 40 years. Bruce is very proud to make a difference through volunteering, and giving back to the community. For over 15 years Bruce has been heavily involved with the Streetsville BIA, sitting on the board of directors in several roles. He has served on the Rotary Club of Streetsville for 35 years and was President from 1985 to 1986. Bruce is a big supporter of each of Streetsville’s annual events, giving generously to the Bread and Honey Festival, Canada Day Celebrations and the Santa Claus Parade. His charitable efforts extend to sponsoring numerous sport teams and participating in School Co-op Programs. Bruce’s dedication and hard work was also recognized in 2011 when he won the Years of Service Award for reaching the milestone of 40 Years of Business. In 1975 Bruce first opened a Shell station in Streetsville, where he worked over 85 hours a week. Twenty years later, Bruce decided to venture on his own and opened Daley’s Auto Service. This family owned and operated shop is located in Centre Plaza. Bruce also operates Christmas tree sales in Centre Plaza during the holiday season. Countless families in Streetsville and across Mississauga count on Bruce’s beautiful, fresh trees from the east coast as their family Christmas tree. This year Bruce will be taking a step back from his many commitments, and begin enjoying his retirement. Bruce will officially retire from his business at Daley’s Auto Service in May. Bruce is proud to announce that his trusty colleague Troy will be taking over his business. As for Bruce, he has purchased a trailer and plans on travelling to the east coast. He also looks forward to spending more quality time with his granddaughter. The Streetsville BIA and village community thanks Bruce for his many years of service and congratulates him on his retirement. For expert, and trustworthy car repairs, visit Daley’s Auto Service located 169 Crumbie Street, Unit 12. Contact by phone at 905-826-1512
