The Village Square Project was designed with community input and intended to suit the needs of people of all ages and interests. Streetsville enthusiast Barbara Payne works in the village and has grown accustomed to spending her lunch hour each day roaming the village streets. She is excited for a central place to sit, unwind and admire the beautiful scenery around her. Barbara explains, “In the past month since it opened I have enjoyed many lunches reading in the square, sitting comfortably under the shade of an umbrella.” Looking around and admiring the square, Barbara describes her surroundings stating, “The newly reconstructed Streetsville Square gives the community a new and refreshing look. A touch of modern brings a new appeal to the old village. There is ample seating: the chairs and tables positioned perfectly allowing the space to serve as a meeting place.” The brand new street furniture surrounding the square encourages passerby’s to stay and relax awhile in the village. The square is complete with a covered stage, sound system and new lighting system. This set up will allow for special continued on page 8

October 27th – Municipal Election Day On Monday, October 27th, voters across Ontario will be heading to the polls. In 2014, Ontarians will elect approximately 2800 council members and 700 school trustees across the province. Everyone who puts their name forward as a candidate and who casts a ballot makes a difference in their community. Why is it important to vote? The right to vote is a fundamental democratic right that is protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It is the cornerstone of democracy. When we vote, we choose the representatives who will make the laws and policies that govern how we live together. The legitimacy of a government lies in the fact that it is elected. While democracy involves much more than holding elections every four years, voting is a powerful way to send a message to governments and politicians. The more votes, the more powerful the message is. Every vote counts. Compared to other forms of political participation, voting does not require a lot of time or effort – in other words, it is one of the easiest ways to have a say in how your society is governed. Municipal government has a great impact on our day-to-day lives. City planning, public transit, parks and recreation facilities, economic development, roads, property taxes, fire services, municipal by-law and property adjustments are responsibilities of local council. Our local school boards manage our elementary and secondary education programs. All these responsibilities have a strong impact on our daily lives. The GTA faces many challenges moving forward. Take the time over the next few weeks to learn about the candidates, ask questions and be sure to vote on October 27th.

Cantina Mexicana: Mexican Cuisine at its Finest! By Lindsay Howe

Cantina Mexicana is Streetsville’s celebrated Mexican restaurant, conveniently located in the heart of the village. This Mexican restaurant is known for its authentic flavors, colorful décor and quality service. Whether you are looking for a quick bite, or a generous threecourse meal, Cantina Mexicana offers an authentic Mexican experience like no other. Order from Cantina’s flavourful selection of zesty appetizers and spicy entrees. Cantina Mexican’s authentic Mexican dishes set it apart from other Mexican restaurants. Loyal customers continue to return to Cantina Mexicana because of their excellent service, and their savoury Mexican entrees. Cantina’s signature foods include homemade salsa, tortillas, fajitas, tacos, burritos, and delicious guacamole. Walking through Streetsville you can’t miss the restaurant’s vibrantly coloured exterior. Cantina Mexicana provides an upscale, festive Mexican atmosphere, with its rustic Mexican décor. The mood and atmosphere of Cantina will make you feel as though you are on vacation, dining at an authentic Mexican restaurant in the Mexican Riviera.

Maria grew up in the restaurant industry; her family owned a restaurant back home in Mexico when she was growing up. After moving to Canada and raising children, Maria and her late husband Julian opened up Cantina Mexicana. Maria wanted to emulate the authentic Mexican cuisine her parents made back home in Mexico. The cycle continues with Maria’s children working in her restaurant or the years and helping out with the business.

Cantina Mexicana has been providing authentic Mexican Cuisine to the village community for 13 years. Owner Maria Filanowski attributes Cantina Mexicana’s success to hard work, and giving their customers what they want. Customers continue to return to Cantina Mexicana because of the excellent service and delicious cuisine.

Reflecting on thirteen years of service in the village of Streetsville, Maria comments, “Streetsville is a very safe community. We have always felt very secure here and don’t have to worry about anything. Also, the people are very friendly and the community of restaurant owners in the Street village are easy to get 277 Queen South along with.” Mississauga 905-813-1992

Maria and her servers are welcoming, friendly and attentive to their customers needs. Maria acknowledges her hard working staff and the instrumental role they play in helping the business run properly. She also appreciates the ongoing support from her customers over the years.

Streetsville Village Square Bustling with Activity continued from front cover

events and festivals to take place in the square. In the spring and summer you can expect such happenings as weekend morning yoga classes, afternoon concerts and movie nights. Next summer residents can expect the Saturday morning Farmers’ Market to be moved to our centrally located Village Square.

Hurricane Hazel Driving Force Behind Village Square Redevelopment When the preliminary discussions began about the deteriorating condition of our cenotaph and worsening state of our central meeting place in the village, the Streetsville BIA and Councillor George Carlson met to discuss the future of the square and come up with a clear vision for a new square. Chair of the Streetsville BIA Todd Ladner explains the state of the original square stating:

When asked about what she looks forward to seeing in the square in the future Barbara responded, “I’m looking forward to the Christmas holiday when the square is decorated for the season, and the village is festively lit up. It will be quite the sight to behold!” It is hard to believe that in just a little over a month we will be celebrating our Tree Lighting Ceremony in the square. The Tree Lighting Ceremony takes place on Friday, November 28th from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

The area seemed to be sliding into a state of age and disrepair after years of community use. The brickwork integrity of the Cenotaph was deteriorating, the stage platform was shifting and breaking up and the sidewalks and planters appeared pieced together in a hodgepodge pattern after a decade of band-aid maintenance.

Welcome Back The Streetsville Village Square Welcome Back Event took place on Saturday, September 13th. During this soft opening celebration, hundreds came out to witness the unveiling of our new Streetsville Village Square. It was a rainy morning, but the clouds broke and the sun came out just in time for an opening speech by Mayor McCallion. McCallion apologized to the Main Street businesses for the lengthy redevelopment process and for the delays, which caused the contract to be extended. Councillor George Carlson, MP Brad Butt, and MPP Bob Delaney welcomed residents back to the square, thanking everyone for their patience and expressing their excitement at the finished result of the square.

It was mutually decided that it was time for a drastic change. Enter Hurricane Hazel McCallion. As a Streetsville resident who has given so much to our community, Mayor McCallion knew first-hand what an important meeting place the square is for citizens. Ladner describes the general concept for the Village Square Project stating, “It was the ideal spot to help establish a cultural node that encouraged a work, live and play lifestyle in the Village ... fitting the City’s new urban development objectives.” With a broad vision and dedicated City finances Hurricane Hazel met with Todd Ladner, Commissioner Paul Mitchem and Councillor Carlson and proposed a large-scale redevelopment of the square. It was here the vision for the square was born.

The opening was a fun-filled day, with loads of entertainment for the whole family. Activities for children included: face painting, a Lego station, and several arts and craft tables set up for the children to engage in. There were also clowns and magicians onsite to entertain the crowds. Community members lined up to enjoy some savoury appetizers, complements of Cagney’s restaurant celebrating their 40th anniversary. A range of live entertainment was provided throughout the day on our new stage! Band performances ranged from the Paul Malysa Band, to JUSTUS, to Christian James Band: Unplugged and the Streetsville Cadet Band. Goodfellas sponsored the evening entertainment with a performance by tenor soloist Michael Ciufo.

McCallion said she hopes her legacy will be “building a city for people,” where they can enjoy the best quality of life. It is no surprise she played an integral role in the village square project, ensuring the square was designed with the needs of the community in mind. As Mayor McCallion steps down as Mayor at the end of next month after 36 years, the Village Square becomes another physical reminder of her lifelong dedication to our community.

Cenotaph Restored The historic Cenotaph is finally getting the reverence it deserves, located in the southeast section of the square. In addition to moving our sacred Cenotaph to a better location, it was also rebuilt as a result of its diminishing condition. Now that the Cenotaph is fully restored, lets admire our Cenotaph from a short distance away and ensure this sentimental monument first erected 100 years ago maintains its mint condition for another century to come! On Tuesday, November 11th at 11 a.m. Streetsville’s annual Remembrance Day ceremony will be held at our beautifully renewed Cenotaph in the square. Join us to show respect and commemorate the men and women who served in the war and sacrificed their lives for our freedom. The community can once again gather in the heart of the village and take pleasure in our stunning new Streetsville Village Square. Capitalize on every opportunity to luxuriate in the village and spend some quality time in our new central gathering place. For more information visit www.villageofstreetsville. com. Our City, Our Time: Bonnie Crombie’s Vision for Mississauga By Bonnie Crombie

ELEC

ION 201T4

This election is about the future and it is about the next chapter of the Mississauga story.

My platform, Our City, Our Time! Is a bold vision for our city that is built on 6 pillars:

We have enjoyed tremendous leadership under Hazel McCallion who has led our city for the past 36 years. However, with her retirement this year, we have an opportunity to build on her legacy and choose the future direction of Mississauga.

A City that Thrives through economic growth and job creation; a City that Moves through a regionally integrated rapid transit network; a City that Grows responsibly and intelligently to create livable, walkable communities; a City that Shines through a vibrant and diverse arts and culture scene; a City that Cares by ensuring all residents have an equal opportunity for success, including our older adults and those struggling to make ends meet; and most importantly, a City that Works, for you by keeping taxes low and fostering a culture of customer service at City Hall.

I am running for Mayor because I am passionate about our city. It is where my husband and I have chosen to live, work and raise our family. As a daughter of Polish and Ukrainian immigrants I understand the challenge that many Mississauga residents face and the needs of our community. Prior to entering politics, I had a 20 year career in business. I worked in management for two, Fortune 500 companies – the Walt Disney Company and McDonald’s Corporation - and started a successful small business. I’ve also been privileged to represent close to one-third of Mississauga’s residents as the Member of Parliament for Mississauga-Streetsville and currently as the City Councillor for Ward 5. My experience has taught me to work hard, respect the value of a dollar, and how to deliver results for a bottom line and for my community. We have built a city that works. Yes, there are improvements to be made, but I think we can all agree that Mississauga is a dynamic, diverse and vibrant city that has so much potential - potential that I want to tap in and use to move us forward. To do this we need a bold vision and a plan of action to match. I have both.

This is our city and our future. On October 27, I hope I can count on your support. Together, we can build a great city. Will you join me?

Mississauga is a Big City with the Heart of a Village By Steve Mahoney Mississauga has come a long way in its short history. Born out of the thriving, historic villages of Clarkson, Cooksville, Dixie, Erindale, Malton, Meadowvale Village, Port Credit and Streetsville, our City has grown to become Canada’s sixth largest and a place where people from all over the world come to live.

and active neighbourhoods, and that good developments get built and fewer matters go through the expensive Ontario Municipal Board process. 3. Expanding Business Improvement Areas to other parts of the City: Mississauga is home to four successful BIAs – Port Credit, Streetsville, Malton, and Clarkson - that play an important role in the strength of our villages. I will work with Council and existing BIAs to try to expand the BIA concept to other areas of our City.

Mississauga has grown and prospered under the steady leadership of Mayor McCallion. With her retirement from office, she is entrusting her successor with a strong foundation on which to build an even stronger Mississauga.

I believe that Mississauga is a big city with the heart of a village. It is this heart that makes Mississauga such a great place to live, work, and raise a family. If I am privileged enough to be elected your mayor, I will make sure we never lose this character.

I am running for mayor because I have the experience and plan to build on the foundation being left to us by Mayor McCallion. I am committed to keeping Mississauga affordable, investing in our downtown and waterfront, supporting our small businesses, and building stronger villages and neighbourhoods across the City. My plan to build stronger villages and neighbourhoods is laid out in my Blueprint for an Even Stronger Mississauga. As mayor, I am proposing to build stronger villages and neighbourhoods by: 1. Supporting residents in building their neighbourhoods and villages: I will work with Council to set aside $50,000 annually to establish the Heart of a Village Micro Grants Program. This program would provide small matching grants to support neighbourhood groups and/or placebased grassroots initiatives that promote local arts, cultural expression, and civic pride. 2. Appointing a Mississauga Community Development Facilitator: I will work with Council to appoint a Community Development Facilitator whose job it would be to work with residents, developers, and community based organizations to ensure that development supports more livable

The Return of PINK October!

Ceilidh Scholarship Awarded

By Michelle Gardiner

On Saturday, September 20th during the Streetsville Ceilidh, four scholarships were awarded to SHL players attending postsecondary school.

Breast Cancer Awareness month is an internationally recognised event that is organised by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of breast cancer and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and ultimately in hopes of finding a cure!

Congratulations to the four award recipients; Stephen Karasmanis, David da Cunha, Kamran Panthaki and Kelsey Elford. They shared $4,000 donated by the Vic Johnston Community Centre from money raised at the Streetsville Ceilidh.

October has always been my favorite month of the year, and since being diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer at the age of 34, it has become that much more special. My pumpkins are now painted pink, and instead of pulling out the cosy brown fall sweaters I get out all my pink hoodies.

Eligibility requirements are: In the SHL a minimum of 5 years. Eligible to attend a post-secondary institution. Two letters of reference from current school. One letter of reference from the SHL. A letter from the applicant on why they feel they should be awarded.

In 2014 Breast Cancer continues to be the most common cancer in Canadian women over the age of 20. In 2014 there will be 62 women diagnosed daily, 434 women diagnosed weekly and 22,700 diagnosed this year. While research into STREETSVILLE prevention continues to move forward, early diagnosis is our main weapon and is why I am as vocal as I am about my experience.

As a women it is so important that we are aware of our bodies, and I want women to know that if they sense something is just not right please have it looked at closely and if needed demand further investigation of that “probably nothing bump; I wish I had. Make sure you make breast self-exams a regular routine, and guys, this applies to you too. Cancer does not discriminate, it does not care if you STREETSVILLE are rich, poor, tall, short, a man or a women.

Most people know someone who has been affected by this terrible disease, so for October do your part, paint your pumpkins pink to show your support, hold a pink bake sale, host a pink p.j. party or a pink in the rink hockey game to help raise funds to help find a cure. One day we will find a cure, together we can make it happen in our life time. For more information on breast cancer or how you can help, visit www.cbcf.org and Shop for the Cure, or get tips on organizing your own event. Jeff Jones 905-271-0929 | migo@rogers.com

Holly’s Tips: Location, location, location You’ve probably heard this adage many times, but what does it mean? Location is one of the most important aspects of consideration when establishing the value of a property. For example, two identical homes can be priced and valued poles apart, location being the only differing factor.

Positive attributes in close proximity can sometimes become drawbacks. For example being near a school is important but do you want a school next door or across the street? Of consideration

The following could affect not only how much you pay for a home but the properties subsequent resale value.

After narrowing your choice of community and neighbourhood, focus on these factors:

• Distance to work. How long will the rush hour commute take? House prices generally decrease as the distance for the hub-of-activity increases.

• Lot size. Street frontage is important but don’t overlook depth.

• Recreational facilities. Parks, playgrounds, community centres, arenas, swimming pools, baseball diamonds and soccer fields help establish ambience and a community-based neighbourhood.

• Parking and garage. • Corner lots. To avoid creating a tunnel like appearance, corner lots are wider than normal, meaning more grass to cut, more sidewalk to clear of snow and ice, more fencing to erect without a neighbour to share the cost.

• Schools. Which schools service an area is often a high priority.

• Side of the street. Homes on the west side receive morning sun at the front and afternoon sun in the back. South side homes bask in the sun at the rear, ideal for backyard enthusiasts.

• Shopping. Large malls serve an entire community. Intermediate sized plazas are accessed by commuters and pedestrians. • Support services. Everyone needs a doctor, dentist and a pharmacy. Day care centres and religious facilities also rank high.

• Other factors. What street hardware (sidewalk, fire hydrant, overhead street lamp, traffic signs, hydro transformer box, super mailbox, etc.) is located on or near the lot?

• Transportation. Public transit and mature road networks are more readily available in built up and established area. Projected start dates for transit routes or road construction are only educated guesses.

Whether you have questions or need advice about buying or selling a home or would like information about current market trends, call you relator who is an expert and available to assist with all your real estate needs.

Potential deterrents Negative factors can include gas stations, railways tracks, airports, commercial developments, cemeteries, industrial parks and major highways.

products (i.e., annuities), tax-efficient decisions, and liability-relative asset allocation optimization. We estimate a retiree can expect to generate 29% more income on a “utility-adjusted” basis using a Gamma-efficient retirement income … This additional income is equivalent to an annual arithmetic return increase of +1.82% … which represents a significant improvement in portfolio efficiency for a retiree. Unlike traditional alpha, which can be hard to predict, we find that … can be achieved by anyone following an efficient financial planning strategy.”

What does Certified Financial Planner actually do? CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, are experts in comprehensive financial planning. They help people with cash flow analysis and budgeting, goal planning, debt management, insurance and risk management to protect your income and dependants, employer contributory pension plan or group RSP allocations, estate planning, taxes, career, life planning, college and university funding, buying a home, retirement projections and anything else that comes along. No magic, just math supported by broad experience. Sometimes, they are simply answering, “Do I (we) have enough”? Maybe, “How much can I afford to give the kids”?

So what are intelligent financial planning decisions a Certified Financial Planner help me with? Let’s see. 1) a total wealth framework to determine the optimal asset allocation Your current advisor or bank asks you to answer an investment questionnaire and then discusses it with you. This is an attempt to establish risk tolerance and risk preference (i.e., an investor’s aversion to or comfort with risk). This however ignores your risk capacity (i.e., an investor’s ability to assume risk). Asset allocation should be based on a combination of risk preference and risk capacity, and primarily risk capacity. The only way to establish risk capacity is through a thorough examination of your total financial picture. A review of assets, liabilities, current spending and future spending expectations, income sources both now and in the future, etc. In other words, a full financial review of the persons involved. Commonly called a financial plan.

However, the first question to the financial planner is often about the investments. An experienced planner should stop you and make it very clear that it is the comprehensive financial planning that will lead any relationship. As such, we will charge fees for this advice and expertise just like any consultant in a specialized field. Advice for a Fee based on a specific area of expertise. We coach, manage and guide our clients. We get paid based on the advice and the guidance and help in controlling the client’s emotions. This is why they hire us. There’s no ambiguity and that is our point. We work hard at telling all that we meet that financial planning is not investment planning and is very important in its own right.

2) a dynamic withdrawal strategy You probably are contemplating a static withdrawal strategy. An amount based on 4% of assets adjusted for inflation each year is very common. The future will not be steady and unwavering, so why should the withdrawals. Your withdrawal plan should be adjustable to the future realities, not the past plans.

It gets confusing because most financial planner also help with client’s investment management to some degree. Although it is not mandatory that they use their financial planner as their investment manager, it does make sense and is often the best value proposition. Since the planner has the most intimate understanding of their personal finances, they can provide them with investment advice and management that fits with their overall strategy. But again this is a separate area not covered in the basic financial planning and should be treated as such.

3) incorporating guaranteed income products (i.e., annuities) The key here is risk shifting or hedging your risk. Annuities and other guaranteed products (such as long term GICs) place the future performance worries onto the provider of the product and remove the risk from you. 4) tax-efficient decisions You should hold assets in the accounts that are the most tax wise for those types of investments. Ensure that your withdrawal strategy is also generating income in the most beneficial manner. It is not just about this year. A good goal is to lower your lifetime total tax bill to the lowest possible amount. Access to a skilled tax consultant is essential.

Investment management is certainly a different skillset than cash flow and retirement planning and it’s important to separate one from the other. Your investment advisor should provide services like risk education, determine risk tolerance – both ability and willingness, manager selection, investment selection, portfolio design, asset allocation and investment management (rebalancing, market analysis, portfolio analysis). Certainly investment management is related to financial planning but is distinct from it.

5) liability-relative asset allocation optimization The risk associated with currencies, inflation and timing of withdrawals as they relate to the future are an important part of establishing the optimal portfolio allocation.

We believe strongly that investment management should not be commenced without financial planning. It is unfortunate that it is investment management; and primarily investment or manager selection, that drives most relationships between clients and advisors. Clients incorrectly believe they should just seek to make more money on their investments and focuses here. In September 2012, Morningstar, a very large service provider to the investment community, published a research paper titled Alpha, Beta, and Now…Gamma. This paper proposed that it is not investment/manager selection that has the greatest impact on retirement portfolios; rather it is making more intelligent financial planning decisions. At Efficient Wealth Management, we have been promoting the exact same five ideas for over ten years with a passion and it is gratifying to read such strong support for our financial planning focus.

Gordon is the Vice President – Financial Planning at Efficient Wealth Management Inc., a leader in cost efficient financial planning. He has taught at local colleges in both Financial Services and Accounting areas. He is also a frequent guest on television and has written numerous articles on investing and financial planning. See our ad “the Harvest is under way!” in this issue. We are money coaches. We created a new coaching program called The Gratifying Harvest. The program helps you enjoy your future by carefully harvesting cash flow from your lifetime of savings or preparing you to do so. The Gratifying Harvest is an advanced program that takes everything to a much higher level and is only available from Efficient Wealth Management.

The research paper attempts to “… quantify the additional expected retirement income achieved by an individual investor from making more intelligent financial planning decisions … we focus on five fundamental financial planning decisions/techniques: a total wealth framework to determine the optimal asset allocation, a dynamic withdrawal strategy, incorporating guaranteed income

Recycling the Gift of Sight

Lee Funeral Home Announcements

By Silvia Yeomans, Queen Spectacle

The World Health Organization (WHO) says there are over 153 million people who have uncorrected refractive errors (people who are near sighted, far sighted and with astigmatism). Those people can easily be treated with vision correction.

Roy Benipersaud, owner of Lee Funeral Home Limited, is pleased to announce to the community that Marian Tomlinson has joined the firm as the new Managing Director, and George Sutherland has returned. Marian was born and raised on Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick. She has worked for predominately Roy Benipersaud Marian Tomlinson George Sutherland family-owned funeral homes. Marian is a very professional and dedicated funeral director, with many years of experience. She completed her internship in St. Catharines, at George Darte Funeral Chapel. She has worked in funeral homes in Mississauga, the GTA and Shelburne. Marian is looking forward to serving the Streetsville community.

Not being able to learn or read, millions are forced further into poverty simply because they don’t have glasses. We could definitely put an end to that! It’s always recommended that you have a backup pair of eyeglasses and sunglasses, but a drawer full of unused glasses is what we want. Any used single vision, bifocal, trifocal, progressive, safety glasses and prescription or nonprescription sunglasses are needed. Children’s glasses are always necessary. Children are able to achieve a better education with glasses. Glasses provide easier learning and healthier development. For adults, glasses offer them better opportunities with employment and economic strength. For seniors it gives them more independence.

Lee Funeral Home is very glad to welcome back George Sutherland. George started his career at Lee Funeral Home in 1967 and managed the funeral home for thirty years until suffering a serious accident in 2010, at which time he was forced to spend time in recovery. It is nice to have both female and male perspectives in order to better serve families. Marian and George will, together, be able to provide the dignified kind of service families expect and deserve.

As a community, we can make a difference. Queen Spectacle has collected thousands of used glasses for Lions Club International. Taking donations from the different collection points such as ours, Lions Club International has partnered with WHO to provide glasses globally to underdeveloped areas and also provide 45 children’s blindness centres in 35 countries for the preservation, restoration and rehabilitation of sight in children.

The funeral home is fully aware of the negative exposure that has occurred in recent months. They want to apologize for any misunderstandings that families may have experienced.

Join us in doing our part. Bring any of your old glasses and pass them along. Let’s work together, and recycle the gift of sight!

Both Marian and George would be pleased to meet with you, to answer any questions and reassure you that Lee Funeral Home is still providing the same professional service that has been their trade mark since 1935.

Silvia Yeomans is the owner of Queen Spectacle. Queen Spectacle has locations in Streetsville, Port Credit and The Kingsway. They are a Full Eye Care Team recognized for their service excellence. For more information visit their website, www.queenspectacle.com

Family Fables – Play time

A celebration of Life

By Deanne Clipperton

The Celebration of the Life of Peggi McNeil will take place in Heritage Hall of Streetsville United Church on Sunday, November 2nd from 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm.

I think that these days we put too much emphasis on structured activities and not enough on free play. There are many kids that when given free time are stumped and have a difficult time coming up with ideas of what to do on their own, especially if there is the restriction of no electronics. What?! What am I supposed to do? Kids and yes adults too need time to discover and explore their own interests and need time to just play. It is amazing what kids can come up with to do when they are forcefully encouraged to turn off screens. Lately, I have been pleasantly surprised by the activities my kids have come up with to fill their free time. They seem to come alive a little more and their creative and imaginative sides are being challenged. They have more energy and are excited about the activities they are coming up with. New games are being invented, cities are being built (with lego) and masterpieces are being created! I think that they even argue less and are kinder to each other.

Peggi passed away on April 18th in Ottawa at the age of 63, after living with ovarian cancer for two years. She is the daughter of Lloyd McNeil (deceased), and Helen McNeil of Georgetown. Left to mourn are her husband Rob Clipperton, son Joshua (Vancouver), daughter Drew and son-in-law Mike Saray (Ottawa) and sister Nanci McNeil-Llewellyn and Mark Llewellyn (Georgetown). Peggi had a long association with Streetsville before heading to Ottawa to study journalism at Carleton University. She spent her childhood and teen years here, attending Russell Langmaid and Ray Underhill Public Schools and Streetsville Secondary School. At the same time she was an active member of Streetsville United Church, taking part in Sunday school, church choirs and youth groups. Peggi and Rob married in 1979, making Ottawa their home. Josh arrived in 1982 and Drew was born three years later.

Don’t get me wrong organized, structured activities are great and have many positive benefits but like in all aspects of life balance is important. Everyone needs time for self-directed play apart from all the activities they are enrolled in. It is easy to get caught in the trap of thinking that kids always need to have something to do, or somewhere to go, but free time and self-directed play are just as important. Let them come up with their own ideas of what to do, you may be all pleasantly surprised by what they decide. Play will help you and your children learn more about themselves and their interests. It may even lead to ideas of what they may want to be one day, new activities they may want to try or they will just have lots of fun and feel good about themselves and their ideas. Through play you can learn so much about a person, even yourself. As Plato said “ You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.”

Peggi was a wonderful wife and mother but she was also a dedicated colleague, having had a lengthy and distinguished career as a civil servant for the Government of Canada. She was a community leader, an activist, an advocate, a volunteer, a friend, an aunt, a cousin, a sister-in-law, a mother-in-law, a daughter, a sister and a soon-to-be grandmother. She touched the lives of many people in many different ways. Despite her too short time here on earth, Peggi’s family and friends count themselves among the luckiest people for having had her in their lives. They go through life every day trying to live up to the example she set. Friends and family are invited to come together in celebration of Peggi’s life, Sunday November 2nd 2:30-4:30 at Streetsville United Church, 274 Queen Street South, Streetsville (Mississauga).

So it would be worth it for you and your kids to take some time and play!
