Small Business Month breakfast Streetsville Village Times
In celebration of Small Business Month, Lynne Genitti from TD Canada Trust – Small Business and Toby Gardiner, publisher/owner RJ Entertainment Publishing hosted their third annual Business Development Breakfast. Over forty business owners and entrepreneurs gathered at Mondello Ristorante in Streetsville to discuss the economy and the small business forecast for 2014. Guest speaker Bob Gorman, a chief portfolio strategist at TD Wealth, offered insight into the Canadian and Global Economies and the impact it has on local businesses.
Streetsville’s Community Newspaper Volume 08 | Issue 04 Bi-monthly Publication ~ Circulation 25,000 Delivered by Canada Post Toby, Lynne and Bob
There are 2.4 million small businesses in Canada and 873,000 small businesses in Ontario. Small businesses with fewer than 100 employees contribute about 30 percent to Canada’s gross domestic product and two-thirds of Canadian employees work for small businesses. Small businesses in Canada lead the way in employment and growth in this unstable economy across Canada. They lead the way in new job creation. These businesses work hard to earn an income and provide for their employees and families. Small business face daily challenges and situations that help make them leaner and more efficient. Small business owners must react quickly to changing markets and provide exceptional service to their clientele. The Village of Streetsville is comprised of over 300 small businesses and these businesses employ more than a thousand employees and are a contributing strongly to the local and Canadian economy. I encourage local residents to shop in the Village of Streetsville and show your support to small businesses. Together, small businesses are bigger than you think!

Pick up your Pretty Pink Lock and Help Support Young Women & their Families Living with Breast Cancer On Saturday, September 14th, Capilia Truly You hosted a launch for the Locks of Courage Pink Campaign to raise awareness and money for the Rethink Breast Cancer Foundation. In support of Breast Cancer, Capilia Truly You Hair Loss Solution Centre at 14 Henry Street is selling pink Easilities Clip in Color made from 100% human hair for $20. Together with their four other Ontario partners supporting the campaign, each Capilia Centre has a goal of selling 1,000 highlights. This will raise approximately $50,000 for Rethink Breast Cancer. Every 1 out of 6 women diagnosed with breast cancer is under the age of 40. The Rethink Breast Cancer program reaches out to these young women and their families going through Breast Cancer. The Family Support program provides free support, services, resources, home visits, home care and whatever else a young family will require during the period of cancer treatments. The program assists these families to cope with this life-changing experience. President of Capilia Truly You Amalia Ruggiero is very passionate about the fundraising initiative with Locks of Courage to assist the Family Support Program. Ruggiero explains, “Rethink Breast Cancer is the first Canadian Charity to bring bold relevant awareness to this specific demographic facing breast cancer and the unique challenges that come with it.” The pink clip in highlight is trendy and fun; the lock can be curled or straightened to fit any hairstyle. The highlights are a big hit already, and many came out to the launch last month to celebrate and support the start of the program, enjoy some refreshments, and receive information about Rethink Breast Cancer. This year long initiative will run through to October 14th, 2014. The pink lock symbolizes hope and is a proud symbol of support to the cancer cause. It creates a unique sense of belonging for everyone who participants.

Think Pink this October! By Michelle Gardiner
October, a month normally associated with black and orange, has taken on a new hue!
sale or visit www.cbcf.org for other fun ideas. This year, I have lost 2 great friends to this disease; I dedicate this to Michelle and Corrine with hope that One day we will find a cure, together we can make it happen in our life time. Thank you to Toby and Colette Gardiner my brother and sister in-law for asking me to write this article and continue the fight.
Breast Cancer Awareness month is an internationally recognised event that is organised every October to increase awareness of breast cancer and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and ultimately in hopes of finding a cure! You may even catch some NFL linebackers donning some Pink gear in support this month.
For more information on breast cancer or how you can help you can go to www.cbcf.org
October has always been my favorite month of the year, and since being diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer at the age of 34, it has become that much more special. My pumpkins are now painted pink, and instead of pulling out the cosy brown fall sweaters I get out all my pink hoodies.

In 2013 Breast Cancer continues to be the most common cancer in Canadian women over the age of 20. In 2013 there will be 62 women diagnosed daily, 434 women diagnosed weekly and 22,700 diagnosed this year. While research into prevention continues to move forward we are still losing strong vibrant women, sisters, mother, aunts and friends to this terrible disease. As a women it is so important that we are aware of our bodies, and I want women and men to know that if they sense something is just not right please have it looked at closely and, if needed, demand further investigation of that “probably nothing” bump; I wish I had.

Make sure you make breast self-exams a regular routine, and guys, this applies to you too. Cancer does not discriminate, it does not care if you are rich, poor, tall, short, a man or a women. Unfortunately most people know someone who has been affected by this terrible disease, so for October I encourage you to do your part, paint your pumpkins pink to show your support, hold a pink bake

“I’m no architect, but I understand good design.” I may not own a drafting table but, when you’re living in this building, it’s easy to recognize good design. Thoughtful, well-designed spaces like a bright dining room, underground parking, comfortable gathering areas for friends and a hydrotherapy pool. Even the building’s small footprint is an advantage since it means every suite is close to the elevator. There’s no convenience I could want that isn’t within these four walls. Now that’s good planning.

Terry Fox Run 2013: The Streetsville Community Runs For the Cure
Family Fables – Just get out and Play! By Deanne Clipperton
By: Lindsay Howe
A large crowd gathered outside Vic Johnston Arena at Streetsville Memorial Park on Sunday, September 15th to kick off the 2013 Terry Fox Run For the Cure.
The return to school means back to routine and catching up with our friends after school. Nolan plays mini sticks, four-square or soccer with his friends until I have to drag him home. Kenzie races around with her “scooter gang”, colours or runs around with her friends. Graydon rides his bike with his snowmobile helmet on or joins in the fun with Kenzie and her friends. And me, well, I get to chat and laugh with other moms. This is our sanity hour when we don’t have to entertain anyone! Sometimes we laugh so hard our bellies hurt, what a stress relief. I think I look forward to this time as much as the kids do, if not more. Some days we are there for an hour or more. It is nice to watch them just play and interact with others making their own unstructured fun. These activities are as important if not more as all of the structured activities they are involved in because kids today don’t get many opportunities to just be, with no technology to rely on.
It was a crisp, yet sunny fall morning, perfect weather for the event. Participants of all ages showed up to support the Terry Fox Run and cancer research. Families with young children, teens and adults were present; many people even brought their dogs out to participate in the run. At the sound of the foghorn, runners took off, heading down through Streetsville Memorial Park, and across the trail along the Credit River. Participants could sign up for the 1km, 2km, 5km or 10km run. The Streetsville Lions Club has been organizing the Streetsville Terry Fox Run since 1995. This year marks the 18th annual Terry Fox Run in Streetsville. Over the years this event has raised $285, 000 for cancer research. Participant Margot James grew up in Streetsville and has participated in the Terry Fox Run for 10 years in a row. In Middle School and High School Margot ran in the Terry Fox Day National School Run with her school. Now in University, Margot and her friends have returned for the weekend, travelling from schools as far as Barrie, St Catherines, and Waterloo just to participate in the Streetsville Run for the Cure. Margot and her loved ones are running for Leslie, in support of a family member who battled with cancer. Team Leslie raised over $2,000 for the Terry Fox Run for the Cure.
With the change of the leaves it also means we head back to the rink, our second home, and all the other extra-curricular activities that keep us all busy over the winter. These activities are important, but can’t be the only outlet for kids. There needs to be balance between structured and unstructured activities or kids will forget how play. They need free time to explore and be creative and make decisions about how to fill their time. So many things have changed since I was a child. I used to go out and play with friends in the neighbourhood on my bike or down the street, on the days I wasn’t involved in activities, for hours. I was always within whistling distance, my dad had a very distinct whistle and I could hear it wherever I was playing and knew it was time to head home when I heard it. Times have changed I know and as parents we are worried about our kids being taken from us and there is the technology that can travel anywhere and provide hours of addictive, mindless and often lazy fun, no matter where they are.
Mississauga-Streetsville MP Brad Butt spoke during the rally before the run started, reminding participants of our courageous Canadian hero who started all of these thirty-three years ago. Beginning in 1980 Terry Fox started running across Canada, until the cancer had spread and he couldn’t run anymore. Over three decades later, Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope continues on strong, and hundreds of thousands of fellow Canadians come out each year to run for the cure and help fulfill Terry Fox’s legacy to raise millions for cancer research. An outstanding 600 million has been raised for cancer research across the globe.
As a parent, I have to remind myself and my husband that there is a time for everything. Like with many things in life there needs to be a balance, we need to help our kids learn this and to learn how to play. Try and remember back to your childhood, what was your favorite thing to do? Have you ever done this with your kids? Or had the chance to watch your kids do it? You may be surprised at how much fun it still can be or how much more fun you may have doing it while you are doing it with your kids!
A special thanks to everyone who came out to support the Terry Fox Run for the Cure. Let’s work together to outrun cancer. For more information, visit www.terryfox.org.
Get out there and play with your kids or just watch them play, you will be amazed at how good it will make your heart feel!
Team Leslie

Rising Film Stars Patrick Cederberg and Walter Woodman Receive Outstanding Recognition at TIFF By: Lindsay Howe
Promising young filmmakers Patrick Cederberg and Walter Woodman were ecstatic when their film was entered into the Short Cuts program at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The compelling short film Noah made its world premiere at TIFF and sparked a lot of attention. After the premiere, Noah was posted on the TIFF YouTube channel and was watched by nearly a million people. The film went on to win the TIFF YouTube Award for Best Canadian Short Film. Cederberg describes the experience of having his film entered at the Toronto International Film Festival as “Absolutely surreal.” As recent film school grads from Ryerson University, Cederberg and Woodman have watched the festival going on around them for years. This year they were privileged enough to enjoy it from the other side of the fence. Cederberg explains, “We were there with some of our other classmates who also had films in the festival, so sharing the experience with them was great, and meeting all these cool new people and sharing ideas was just awesome.” The seventeen-minute film was shot entirely on webcam. By taking on an innovative approach to making a film, Cedarberg and Woodman were able to avoid the things they didn’t exactly vibe with in the filmmaking process. Cederberg explains: “We came up with an idea that would keep us off of stressful film sets, and would cost us no money to make. Having what we thought was cheeky workaround catch fire like this exceeded every expectation we could have had for the film. We were excited when it won people’s choice at Ryerson’s film festival - everything since is just gravy.”
Patrick (second from the left) and Walter (third from the left)
there that relates to this.” Not surprisingly the response from an older audience is often, “THAT’S how kids use the computer these days? Oh god.” While overindulgent social media behaviour may be the norm for young people today, those who did not grow up in the digital age are more perplexed watching Noah’s frenzied online activity.
The film Noah illustrates how our profound real life experiences can become trivialized over the Internet. The story is told through the lens of Noah’s computer screen where we are given a distorted look into a teenage boy’s life online. While Noah deals with the issue of communication in a digital age, Cederberg and Woodman didn’t want to make a film that leans one way or another.
Twenty-three year old Cederberg grew up in Streetsville and attended Meadowvale High School. Cederberg speaks proudly of his hometown and explains that no matter where his film career takes him, there is no place like home. “I’m a second-generation Streetsvillian, and I love it. With this project specifically, I had to draw so much from my youth to really bring it to life and make it feel authentic - and so much of that youth was spent growing up in Streetsville. It’s home, it’s family, and I’ll never get too far from it!”
The film does not suggest we should break free from this over indulgent behaviour towards social media. Instead, young audiences are left to their own devices to evaluate their relationships, the extent of which they communicate with each other online, and whether or not these online interactions could have an adverse effect.
The almost overnight success of Cederberg and Woodman couldn’t have happened to a more creative duo. Cederberg and Woodman are not only talented filmmakers, but also successful musicians. Currently their band Shy Kids is working on the finishing touches of their first full-length record. Visit their website at www.shykidsband.com for more information and to listen to a few tracks.
Cederberg explains: “It was more about putting it out there and saying, Hey, nobody’s really put forward an honest portrayal of how we behave on the computer. We tried. Watch this, think about it, talk about it. It seems to have sparked a conversation, and that’s better than anything we could have hoped to say with it outright.”
Patrick Cederberg is passionate about working with different creative processes and artistic media to present engaging and compelling stories. “As a filmmaker, I feel like so long as I can tell stories that feel honest to me and maintain my identity in whatever I do, I’ll be happy. Beyond that though, my aspiration is ultimately to live in a secure enough space to be able to tell stories in different ways - be it through music, art, or anything else. I enjoy creating things, whatever the platform, and switching it up keeps it challenging and exciting.”
Noah was creatively inspired by shared experiences from Cederberg and Woodman’s teenage years. They hoped that the film would resonate with their audience and were surprised by how much people seemed to relate to the film. Cederberg describes the most common response he has received from people his age: “Oh my god! That was me five years ago.” Which is crazy to us, because when Walter and I were writing it, it was basically us assembling all of the weird stuff we did on the computer when we were kids. And after we had it all together, we looked at it and said to each other, “I hope there is SOMEONE out
On behalf of the community of Streetsville, we congratulate Cederberg and Woodman on their accomplishments. We look forward to seeing more of your work in the near future!
Holly’s Tips ‘Tis the season to start thinking about turning on the furnace To ensure your heating system runs efficiently and lasts longer here are a few tips. Get an annual tune up. A heating system needs annual maintenance to keep it running efficiently and to repair minor problems before they become major ones (read expensive). Best time to book a service appointment is now, before you turn on your furnace for the season. Filters. You’ve heard it before, but it’s worth repeating. A dirty filter slows down air flow and wastes energy by making your system work harder. Change your furnace filter once a month during winter months and a t least once every third month during the balance of the year. Programmable Thermostat. If you haven’t already, consider installing one this fall. Regulating and controlling the temperature in your home can save you up to 12% on your energy bill.

No NHL, but don’t tell them Not many fans choose to watch, but if you were looking to take in some hockey this summer for free, the Vic Johnston Community Centre Men’s Summer League played every Tuesday night. For 18 weeks, eight teams competed for the honour to hoist a trophy assembled from relic trophy pieces found in storage at the Vic. Pretty creative! The league and teams are made up of local community men sharing their passion for hockey on a weekly basis. Team Village Times, P-Dogs, Deep V’s, Skid Marks, Strangers, Money Shots, Boilers and Canucks competed every Tuesday night, sometimes into the late hours to establish Streetsville men’s hockey supremacy. The men’s summer league is a different hockey league from the NHL, but hockey all the same. There is a great variety of jerseys, socks and equipment. Best situations have jerseys and matching socks. There are different rules than in the NHL. The red line does not exist, play stops if a goalie gets hit in the mask with a puck and if the score is out of hand with a minute or so left, teams simply shake hands and head to their change rooms for beverages. Regular season saw the Deep V’s finish in first place with a record of 10-4. Playoffs produced a Championship game with the Skidmarks and P-Dogs. Skidmarks won 4-3 in overtime in a thrilling game that went into overtime. The Skidmarks have the honour to share the trophy amongst them and enjoy the winter relishing in their win. The league will look forward to their return next summer with the trophy and prepared to defend their title. Remembrance Day On Monday, November 11 at 10:30 a.m., Streetsville’s Remembrance Day events will begin with a parade along Queen Street South, which will make its way to the cenotaph. A ceremony and a moment of silence at 11 a.m. will pay respect to the many men and women who sacrificed so much so that we could enjoy the lives we lead today.

Tree Lighting Ceremony November 22nd from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The annual Streetsville Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held at Main Street Square on Friday, November 22nd. You won’t want to miss out on the celebration, as we countdown to reveal the big Christmas tree all lit up, illuminating Main Street Square.
In spring 2013 the Streetsville BIA added ten brand new Victorian style benches along Queen St. South, to provide a spot for residents and visitors to sit and relax. All of the new benches were sponsored through the BIA’s bench sponsorship program by local families, business owners and service organizations. Beautifully engraved plaques adorn all of our new benches and showcase these sponsors.
This evening event is a popular past time for hundreds of families who come out each year to experience Christmas in the village. Everyone can enjoy a family wagon ride through Streetsville, admiring the festively decorated streetscapes. Meanwhile the children wait patiently to sit on Santa’s knee and share their Christmas wishes with him.
In January 2014 the BIA is pleased to bring back the sponsorship program to replace the remaining older benches along Queen St. South. These new benches are made from cast iron ends with the Streetsville logo, and man-made materials that will last for many years to come.
Come out to the Tree Lighting Ceremony for some complimentary hot chocolate, apple cider and other yummy treats. Listen to the talented carollers and join in the singing of your favourite Christmas tunes. Bring your non-perishable items and drop them off at Second Cup for Santa’s Food Drive.
For many families in Streetsville this is the perfect gift to honour a loved one who has passed, or to recognize your family who may be long time Streetsville residents, or even new ones!
The Streetsville 2013 Christmas Window Contest winners will be announced. Take the opportunity to admire the decorated streetscapes and do some window-shopping. Stop in to say hello to the merchants and browse their unique gifts and decorations.

Ceilidh rocked the Vic! Ceilidh is a Gaelic term for a gathering of friends and family to celebrate with music, food and drink ... it is a very apt description of what took place at the Vic Johnston Community Centre September 21st, 2013. The third annual Ceilidh Celebration was a rocking good time and a success on many accounts. Guests dined and enjoyed the sounds of DJ El Crusty, danced the evening away to the Mountain Lion Trappers, and The North completed the night with their upbeat hard tempo music. Ceilidh Event Chair Julie Walker stated, “The 2013 Streetsville Ceilidh was a great success, the changes our executive committee made this year produced an amazing fundraiser. We were able to again support the kids in our Streetsville Community. Thanks to everyone who attended, donated and sponsored this event.”
betes Foundation among many other charities. The Streetsville Legion has one of the strongest Cadet programs in the Province, and Streetsville Rotary supports Camp Enterprise, a leadership experience for high school students.
Food was a plenty as guests dined on charcoal grilled chicken, corn and an assortment of salads. Ceilidh committee member Todd Smith claimed “The Streetsville Lions were once again very proud to participate in such an amazing night for the community. The only negative thing we heard from the people attending was that they were getting too much food! You got to love the half chicken, fresh corn and salad dinner to help kick start the night off right!”
The VJCC Scholarship Fund benefits post-secondary students who played hockey in the SHL and have passed through a rigid application and selection process to secure their bursary. Two scholarships were presents during the evening. The first Scholarship winner was Justin Antunes-Cardoso. He started playing in the SHL in the 2002/2003 season in the tyke division. In the 2005/2006 season he received the Esso Achievement Award for Special Effort which was presented to him by the President of Hockey Canada. In 2008/2009 he won the Minor Bantam division championship. He is currently studying Life Science at the University of Toronto.
The evening also offered a live and silent auction, specialty drink - The Ceilidh Climax, craft beer and much more throughout the evening. The fundraiser emerged from the good energy generated by the Streetsville community during the 2008 Redevelopment of the Vic Johnston Community Centre. In fact the organizing committee includes members of the VJCC, Streetsville Legion Branch 139, Streetsville Rotary and Streetsville Lions.
The second scholarship winner, Alex Ladner is a third generation Streetsville resident who graduated from both St. Joseph Elementary School and Gonzaga High School while growing up in the Village. He entered the SHL when he was five years old and played hockey his entire minor league career in the SHL until Midget last season at age 17. He participated in the Streetsville Select Sabres program when it was first introduced. All of his required community service hours were obtained through his involvement with volunteer projects at the VJCC. Even though his volunteer hours were completed, he still continued to volunteer his time at the arena and with the hockey program. He was also a time keeper as well as a referee during his 12 year SHL career. He considers the Vic Johnston Community Center his second home. Alex is currently entered into his first year at Loyalist College in Belleville with an interest in obtaining a construction technology degree.
The Streetsville Ceilidh has raised close to $60,000 in three years. The funds have been directed to kids in the community through the four organizing partners. The Streetsville Lions support Credit Valley Hospital, Erinoaks Kids and the Dia-

Scott Brubacher Village Market Report The MLS® HPI is calculated using a sophisticated statistical model that is a hybrid of both the repeat sales and hedonic price approaches. The MLS® HPI takes into account a home’s quantitative attributes (e.g. the number of rooms it has; square footage etc.) and qualitative attributes (e.g., whether it has a finished basement, a view etc.).
The Toronto Real Estate Board has reported strong sales and price growth in September according to the recent market watch report. The board has published results showing an average 30% increase in sales volume between September 2012 and Sept 2013. The TREB president stated that the cost of home ownership remained affordable due to low mortgage rates.
The MLS® HPI approach provides a less volatile measure of price than averages and medians, which can swing dramatically in response to changes in the mix of home sales from one time period to the next. If you are thinking of buying or selling your home, Scott can provide you with knowledge of the local market, accurate property information, real estate business expertise, and understanding of your real estate needs, and top negotiating practice. Scott also is accredited senior’s friendly with the SRES (senior’s real estate specialist designation). Call Scott for more information!
The result is renewed growth in home sales in the GTA. The September report showed an average price increase of 6.5% year over year.
Scott Brubacher is a TOP Realtor 2013 in Mississauga for community Service – awarded by the Mississauga Real Estate Board Real Estate Sales Rep – Royal LePage Meadowtowne Realty. Phone 905-821-3200.
The home price index composite benchmark for September as reported on TREB was up by four percent year over year. In Mississauga and the Streetsville area, the housing market continues to be strong. The community is growing quickly led by immigration and close proximity to the diverse job market in the GTA. Further areas close to square one and Erin Mills Town centre are undergoing significant intensification with the building of high rise condo towers. In September there were 843 Mississauga sales compared to 2201 actives. The average sold price was $505,000.

Value For Money Investing Value For Money Investing means we wish to allocate and use our hard-earned resources in order to improve investment outcomes in a continuous and sustainable way at a fair and equitable price. In other words, achieve good investment returns AND receive fair value for the services provided. Costs do matter!
in this article we focus on five fundamental financial planning decisions/techniques: a total wealth framework to determine the optimal asset allocation, a dynamic withdrawal strategy, incorporating guaranteed income products (i.e., annuities), tax-efficient decisions, and liability-relative asset allocation optimization.
Gamma, Gamma Go Gamma Last article, under our journal heading The Gratifying Harvest (Eeny meeny….), I promised to discuss in the future, five important factors that have the greatest impact on retirement portfolios. Earlier this year I wrote about some key terms used in finance (its All Greek to Me), Alpha and Beta. Well the future is here and it is time for a new common term denoted by the Greek letter Gamma. (This is somewhat confusing because Gamma is in many glossaries as a descriptive for pricing of options. Gamma indicates how quickly your exposure to the price movement of the underlying security changes as the price of the underlying security varies. Other times it is used as the variable denoting the investor’s degree of risk aversion.)
We estimate a retiree can expect to generate 29% more income on a “utility-adjusted” basis using a Gamma-efficient retirement income strategy when compared to our base scenario, which assumes a 4% constant real withdrawal and a 20% equity allocation portfolio. This additional income is equivalent to an annual arithmetic return increase of +1.82% (i.e., Gamma equivalent alpha), which represents a significant improvement in portfolio efficiency for a retiree. Unlike traditional alpha, which can be hard to predict, we find that Gamma (and Gamma equivalent alpha) can be achieved by anyone following an efficient financial planning strategy.” Wheh! …and read that last half sentence again “….can be achieved by anyone following an efficient financial planning strategy.” So let’s start.
In September 2012, Morningstar, a very large service provider to the investment community, published a research paper authored by David Blanchett, CFA, CFP, Head of Retirement Research, Morningstar Investment Management and Paul Kaplan, Ph.D., CFA, Director of Research, Morningstar Canada titled Alpha, Beta, and Now…Gamma. This paper proposed that it is not investment/manager selection that has the greatest impact on retirement portfolios; rather it is making more intelligent financial planning decisions. At Efficient Wealth Management, we have been promoting the exact same five ideas for over ten years with a passion and are very pleased to share with you the conclusions of such an authoritative source. In a departure from the usual for me, I am simply going to let you read their well summarized abstract and then I will clarify in street terms, the decisions and techniques.
1) a total wealth framework to determine the optimal asset allocation Your current advisor or bank asks you to answer an investment questionnaire and then discusses it with you. This is an attempt to establish risk tolerance and risk preference (i.e., an investor’s aversion to or comfort with risk). This however ignores your risk capacity (i.e., an investor’s ability to assume risk). Asset allocation should be based on a combination of risk preference and risk capacity, and primarily risk capacity. The only way to establish risk capacity is through a thorough examination of your total financial picture. A review of assets, liabilities, current spending and future spending expectations, income sources both now and in the future, etc. In other words, a full financial review of the persons involved. Commonly called a financial plan.
Abstract…. “When it comes to generating retirement income, investors arguably spend the most time and effort on selecting ‘good’ investment funds/managers—the so called alpha decision—as well as the asset allocation, or beta, decision. However, alpha and beta are just two elements of a myriad of important financial planning decisions, many of which can have a far more significant impact on retirement income.
2) a dynamic withdrawal strategy You probably are contemplating a static withdrawal strategy. An amount based on 4% of assets adjusted for inflation each year is very common. The future will not be steady and unwavering, so why should the withdrawals. Your withdrawal plan should be adjustable to the future realities, not the past plans. 3) incorporating guaranteed income products (i.e., annuities) The key here is risk shifting or hedging your risk. Annuities and other guaranteed products (such as long term GICs) place the future performance worries onto the provider of the product and remove the risk from you.
We introduce a new concept called “Gamma” designed to quantify the additional expected retirement income achieved by an individual investor from making more intelligent financial planning decisions. Gamma will vary for different types of investors, but
4) tax-efficient decisions You should hold assets in the accounts that are the most tax wise for those types of investments. Ensure that your withdrawal strategy is also generating income in the most beneficial manner. It is not just about this year. A good goal is to lower your lifetime total tax bill to the lowest possible amount. Access to a skilled tax consultant is essential.
Advice For A Fee

5) liability-relative asset allocation optimization The risk associated with currencies, inflation and timing of withdrawals as they relate to the future are an important part of establishing the optimal portfolio allocation.
Increase your income through intelligent financial planning decisions.
In the words of the authors, “From a more holistic perspective, each of these Gamma concepts can be thought of as actions and services provided by financial planners not investment managers. Is it time to rethink your own approach?” Join us for our next “Meet the Columnist” on Tuesday, October 29th, 2013 from 2 to 4 pm or 7 to 9 pm. Savour Mississauga A Culinary Celebration
By Silvia Yeomans, Queen Spectacle Think about it. You’re sitting in front of your computer. I do it too. You can look for a product, do some research, read the reviews and if you so desire, you can click on the button that says “add to cart”.
Welcome to Savour Mississauga Restaurant Week - October 21st to November 3rd, 2013. It’s time to warm up your tastebuds! Restaurant Week in Mississauga is officially here!
Well now take it from a wider angle. Look around you. Go for a walk in your neighbourhood. If you live in Port Credit, go for a walk along Lakeshore. If you’re in Streetsville, take a walk along Queen Street. The Kingsway strolls along Bloor Street. Now tell me. If you bought all the things you find online, some of those businesses would be missing!
The inaugural Savour Mississauga Restaurant Week event will make its debut October 21st and will run until November 3rd, 2013. Explore Mississauga’s finest restaurants serving up delicious three-course prefixe dinners for only $20, $25, or $35 per person, and lunch at select restaurants for only $15 or $20 per person. Reservations are strongly recommended and can be made by calling the restaurants directly.
I know life seems to be ‘easy’ ordering product online, but buying local also makes your local neighbourhoods flourish. There’s charm to local neighbourhoods because of the stores that exist.
Savour Mississauga is dedicated to shining the spotlight on Mississauga’s culinary diversity through its wide range of fabulous dining restaurant choices. The Program provides steady business during a typically slower period, infinite exposure to all of Mississauga’s residents, and most notably, a tremendous opportunity to acquire new, loyal clients to their establishment. It is also a great opportunity for restaurants to showcase the quality, variety and hospitality of the City’s restaurant community.
I am a local business owner. I go online to view product, but I always try to buy in my neighbourhoods. I love Port Credit, Streetsville and The Kingsway. Almost everything I own comes from those three wonderful places. Almost everything I buy for myself and others; be it engagement presents, birthday presents, housewarming presents, they come from here! Recently, we started getting some clients pricing out our eyeglasses and contact lenses (because they can order them online). A woman came in, completely certain that her contact lenses were less expensive online than with ANY optical. She had an eye exam, and the optometrist even told her that her eyes needed a break from contact lenses. If she continues to wear her contact lenses the way she was, she will be completely cut-off from contact lenses. We tried to tell her what she was doing was extremely unhealthy for her eyes. Remember, you only have 5 senses. One of those senses is your sight. Can you imagine, we priced out contact lenses for her? Yes, we were $6 more than online. I admit, we were more expensive, but we could watch her progress to make sure we are caring to make sure her eye health improves. Thankfully, she is now under our care. Imagine how many people have ocular problems because no one is taking care of their eye health.
For consumers, it is a great way to try out new restaurants that may usually appear to be “out of budget” or continue to simply enjoy familiar favourites. Participating restaurants and their pre fixed menus are all available at www.Savour Mississauga.com Visitors can search all of the tasty dishes based on cuisine, location and price points, plus you can also view individual restaurant profiles and learn more about the various dining destinations. SavourMississauga.Com provides a visual avenue for restaurants to communicate specials, menus, photographs, chef profiles and so much more for hungry eaters.
There is a price for service. It’s not always expensive. But there is a service involved that you cannot get from ordering online. Be it eyeglasses or contact lenses it is difficult to understand the depth of complications with your vision looking through contact lenses or eyeglasses that are not provided by your licensed optician.
Additionally, Savour Mississauga is much more than just a dining event. It’s an opportunity to also showcase all the wonderful local businesses in the city from shopping malls, to arts and culture, to entertainment, to hotels. Savour Mississauga supports local tourism with a strong focus on EAT-PLAY-SHOP-STAY. Visitors can explore the diversity available across the city while spending money and contributing to our local economic development.
Port Credit, Streetsville and The Kingsway have some of the best Optometrists and Opticians working in them.
Savour The Meals…Savour The Deals! It’s time to Savour new flavours, and support your local dining establishments.
Be proud to support your local businesses and be proud to say you live in your neighbourhood.
If you would like to add and feature your restaurant establishment to Savour Mississauga Restaurant Week, contact info@savourmississauga.com.

Ward 11 Update
By Councillor George Carlson The fall season has quickly come upon us, which means that winter will soon be on its way.
windrow is the snow left at the bottom of a driveway after a snowplow has cleared a road. The program will provide windrow snow clearing service after every snow plowing operation, and windrow snow clearing will be approximately 3m (10 ft) wide to allow one car to pass.
With the cold weather and snow around the corner, you are probably thinking of ways to gain greater control of your energy costs and save some money in the process. If you are a senior or someone with a disability, you are probably also thinking about programs that offer assistance with snow removal. The good news is that both Enersource and the City of Mississauga will be offering some great assistance programs to help you and your family get through the winter months.
The program is available to 300 applicants on a first come first served basis. Residents who are 65 years and older and individuals who are physically disabled can apply for eligibility through an application process that will determine whether it will be a free service or have a $200 fee attached. To download an application form, please visit www.mississauga.ca/snow<http:// www.mississauga.ca/snow> or you may pick up an application package at your local Community Centre. Community Centres will be accepting applications from Monday September 23, 2013 until 9 p.m. on Monday, November 11, 2013. The windrow clearing service will begin on November 25, 2013 and end on March 7, 2014. For more information, please call 3-1-1 or visit www.mississauga.ca/snow
To keep your energy usage and costs under control this winter, consider participating in Enersource’s Green Family Challenge. The Green Family Challenge is offered by Enersource, in partnership with the Ontario Power Authority, and offers great energy and cost savings programs to residents. All you and your family need to do is participate in some of these energy-saving programs that help reduce your overall energy consumption, and you could win prizes as well. The prize list includes: a trip for four to the eco-friendly Costa Rica; monthly draws for Niagara getaways; dinner and movie passes; as well as other fun prizes. To participate in the Challenge, choose from any of the programs listed below: • The HEATING AND COOLING INCENTIVE program can give eligible customers up to $650 in rebates;
If you require financial assistance with your snow removal costs, I would also encourage you to apply for the City’s expanded Yard Maintenance Subsidy program. The City’s existing Snow Removal Subsidy program, provided to seniors and individuals with disabilities, has been expanded to cover grass cutting as well. The expanded subsidy program is now called the Yard Maintenance Subsidy program.
• The FRIDGE AND FREEZER PICKUP program has enabled thousands of Mississauga residents to dispose of their old, inefficient and power-hungry fridges and freezers for free; • The peaksaver PLUS program gives customers a professionally installed, free programmable thermostat (a $350 value) and a free in-home energy display;
The expanded subsidy covers snow clearing and grass cutting services. This subsidy is offered to seniors and individuals with disabilities who receive government income supplements. The maximum subsidy that will be provided to each eligible resident is $200, and the subsidy period runs from April 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014. Applications must be submitted to the City’s Finance Division no later than April 30, 2014. For more information about this expanded subsidy program, please visit www.mississauga.ca/ seasonalservices or call 3-1-1.
• Use saveONenergy COUPONS for discounts on a wide range of eligible energyefficient products to help you reduce your energy use. Receive savings of up to $30 on energy efficient light bulbs, ceiling fans, motion sensors and programmable thermostats; or • Go paperless by registering for e-billing or get energy-savings tips and resources all year by registering for the free Enersource e-newsletter. The more programs you participate in as part of the Green Family Challenge, the “greener” your household will become, and you will have an even greater chance of winning the available prizes. For more information on these programs and details on the Green Family Challenge, please visit greenfamilychallenge.ca
I hope that these energy/cost savings programs, as well as the snow removal assistance programs are helpful to you and your family this winter season. As always, if you need any assistance on this or any other municipal matter, please don’t hesitate to contact my office at 905-896-5011 or george. carlson@mississauga.ca
If you are a senior or person with a disability and you need assistance clearing snow from your driveway, I would encourage you to apply for the City’s Driveway Windrow Snow Clearing Program. The program assists older adults and individuals who are physically disabled with removal of driveway windrows. A
