Why choose an Apprenticeship? In 2015 the Government announced its plans to create three million apprenticeships by 2020. As part of our commitment to help reach this target City of Bristol College works closely with employers to enrol around 12,000 new apprentices each year. Apprenticeships are an exciting way to gain hands-on experience working with an employer while you achieve a nationally recognised qualification. With your employer you’ll work alongside experienced professionals who will help you to develop the skills required by your chosen industry. You’ll also study at college which means you’re getting the best mix of practical and theoretical training and perhaps better still, you’ll get paid. The average wage for an apprentice is £170 per week, plus you’ll receive full holiday pay and your student card will get you discounts on food, fashion, travel & leisure activities across the South West.

Am I eligible for an apprenticeship? Anyone over the age of 16 can apply for an apprenticeship as long as you are not enrolled on another full-time course or have not already completed a degree level qualification. You must be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week with an employer who has agreed your apprenticeship placement.

How long will it take? Your apprenticeship will take between one and five years to complete, depending upon the level of apprenticeship and the industry sector. You will be required to complete the full length of your apprenticeship to achieve the qualification.

DID YOU KNOW? • 8,000 employers in the South West employed an apprentice in 2015 • 84% of apprentices stay in employment on completion of their apprenticeship • Employers consider apprentices 15% more employable then applicants with other qualifications.

Intermediate Apprenticeships will provide you with an introduction to working in your chosen industry. You will learn new skills and professional practices to develop your confidence and set you up for an exciting career. Level 4-5 Higher Apprenticeship

Equivalent to NVQ Level 4/5 HNC and foundation degree A higher apprentice will already be working at a professional level. They will often be responsible for managing their own work or projects and may also be accountable for overseeing the work of others in their team.

What will I achieve? Your apprenticeship qualification will contain three certificates which in most cases will include the following: Competencies Certificate – This qualification recognises your confidence and practical skills and is achieved through Workplace Assessments made by an industry-experienced College assessor. Technical Certificate – This is a knowledge-based qualification such as a BTEC or a City and Guilds progression award. The qualification is achieved through classroom-based assessments and examinations. Functional Skills Qualification – Certificates in maths, English or ICT for those who have not already achieved a grade C or above in GCSE. Apprentices will receive support from a College tutor before completing an exam in each area.

Higher Apprenticeships As well as Intermediate and Advanced Apprenticeships we also offer Higher Apprenticeships which are an excellent alternative route to traditional university study. In most instances you will need to be employed as a senior member of staff responsible for managing your own projects or overseeing the work of others in your team. How valuable is the qualification?

What are the entry requirements?

Higher Apprenticeships are Level 4 or 5 qualifications which are equivalent to HNCs or HNDs and even Foundation Degrees. At City of Bristol College our Higher Apprenticeships are awarded by industry recognised bodies such as the Chartered Management Institute, Pearson, City & Guilds and Excellence, Achievement & Learning Limited (EAL).

To start or apply for a Higher Apprenticeship you will need to have achieved a Level 3 qualification in areas such as A Levels, BTEC Diploma, NVQ or an Advanced Apprenticeship. In some instances you may need to have previously achieved a qualification relevant to the industry you are specialising in, for example, engineering or ICT.

Do I need to have an employer? You will need to be in full-time employment with an employer who has agreed to your apprenticeship. You can start an apprenticeship with your existing employer or apply for employer vacancies by visiting cityofbristol.ac.uk

How will I be assessed? You will be visited in the workplace by a College assessor and in some instances you may also need to attend classroom tuition either one day each week or for a period of block tuition. This will depend on the requirements of your apprenticeship and your responsibilities at work.

Any fees or funding? As with other higher national qualifications tuition fees will apply for learners over the age of 19. Many employers will fund or part-fund the tuition fees but this will vary between organisations. If you are responsible for paying your own tuition fees you may be eligible for funding depending on your previous qualifications and the specific suite of qualifications included within your programme. You may also be able to apply for a HE Tuition Fee Loan, a Professional and Career Development Loan (PCDL) or a combination of the two. For more information contact our welfare team on: 0117 312 5000.
