University Level and Professional Course Guide 2016/17
Welcome
Hello!
As the new Principal of City of Bristol College, I’m delighted to warmly welcome you to one of the largest colleges in the country, in one of the UK’s most exciting locations. Bristol is an ever-growing city with strong levels of employment and commercial investment, a rich history and a well-documented, vibrant culture. Our students enjoy taking advantage of all that Bristol offers, from music, dance and drama to sport, restaurants and retail therapy – there truly is something for everyone here. And that’s not all – our University Centre offers a broad range of degrees and professional qualifications that inspire bright ideas, ensure bold thinking and will help you realise your career ambitions. The Centre has just been praised by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) who reviewed our provision at the end of 2015. The QAA highlighted a number of particularly positive areas of good practice and I’m delighted that, when judged against the same criteria applied to the country’s universities, we have met the challenging standards expected. This success is due to the outstanding work of our expert staff, many of whom continue to work in the subject area they teach. This specialist knowledge of their occupational area means that students are taught not just theory, but also practical skills tested in the workplace. Additionally, I am particularly proud of our innovative and dynamic curriculum, partnerships with industry and a true focus on employability. As a result, we consistently receive excellent feedback from our students with some programmes receiving 100% satisfaction. In the most recent student survey, overall satisfaction was 89% against a national average of 86%. Our courses cover all of the region’s main sectors and so we are perfectly placed to help you realise your potential, acquire the expertise and knowledge you need, as well as supporting you to develop the confidence to pursue your chosen career path. Now is a perfect time to join us and take your life and learning to the next level, so I look forward to welcoming you again as a student of City of Bristol College. Lee Probert Principal and Chief Executive

Why City of Bristol College? 1
The College can trace its origins to 1593 and the Merchant Venturers’ Navigation School. That means we’ve spent over 420 years perfecting what we do.

Our four learning centres are dotted around one of Britain’s best cities (see page 12) and 2015’s European Green Capital. In the National Student Survey our students awarded us an overall satisfaction grading of 89% which is above the national average. We have recently been awarded the UK Quality Assured mark by the Quality Assurance Agency, to reflect the excellent standard of our higher education courses. We offer the widest range of courses in the area – more than 1,000 vocational and academic courses right up to degree level. We are one of the largest colleges in the country and educate more than 20,000 students every year. Our Creative Arts students have access to work experience at places like Aardman and Colston Hall, Bristol’s largest Music and Arts Venue. This year we’ve been delighted to see so many of our graduates receive industry and education awards including: the Academic Partnerships Prize from Plymouth University, the Hooper Award from Bristol News and Media, and the Memorial Trophy for outstanding achievement in Engineering. On average we have 70 learners each year studying Higher Apprenticeships within local industry. We’re committed to career development, and our employerfocused training helps bridge the gap between skills and jobs.

Big up
Bristol
Bristol has a lot to give. Bright lights and late nights are surrounded by green hills and good old-fashioned fresh air. It’s a cultural centre in its own right, and also somehow close to everywhere – from London to Land’s End, you’re never that far away in Bristol.
Voted By The Devoted
The Grass Really Is Greener
Bristol was voted ‘Best City To Live In’ by The Sunday Times. That was in 2014, and it’s probably got even better since then. With high employment levels; a huge variety of shops; and culture, clubs, charisma and countryside to die for, there’s everything for someone, and something for everyone.
Nominated the European Green Capital for 2015, Bristol stood out because of its commitment to environmental improvement and sustainable development. It’s now seen as a source of inspiration for other European cities to promote best environmental practices. Lush.
Painting The Town Every Colour
13
Banksy is known and loved the world over, and many of his works can be found around the city. But there’s a lot more to Bristol’s graffiti and street art scene – everywhere you look you’ll find weird and wonderful works. And of course there’s Upfest to look out for. It’s Europe’s largest graffiti and street art festival, and its held…you guessed it…here in the good city of Bristol.
A City That Celebrates Bristol’s calendar is full of festivals – we know how to celebrate. Like music? Film? Food? Animation? Hot air balloons? Kites? Gay Pride? There’s a festival for everything.
Hello And Good Buy Gloucester Road has so many wonderful independent shops, they merge into one unique stretch of shopping excellence. Then of course, there’s the boutiques of Clifton, the sparkle of Harvey Nichols, the shelter of the Mall, the shine of Cabot Circus, and the central Bristol Shopping Quarter. Bristol is the shopping capital of the South West. Take a look around – it’d be rude not to.

Proud Of The Pound
Bristol’s music scene and nightlife is legendary. From big clubs to little clubs, via bars, speakeasies and many, many pubs, you’ll be spoilt for choice for places to hang out. And that’s before we’ve even thought of the concert halls, comedy clubs and pop-up events. You can stay safe in the knowledge that lots of Bristol’s famous nightlife districts have been awarded the Purple Flag too.
The Bristol Pound is the UK’s first citywide local currency. It was introduced to support independent businesses and the local economy. You can spend Bristol Pounds at participating business by transferring money digitally on your mobile, or with actual money that you can hold in your hand.

Big up City of
Bristol College
The College reflects the scope and opportunity that Bristol has to offer. Our centres span the city; we offer a diverse range of courses, affordable fees, and comprehensive support services.
On Course Want to start with a Foundation Degree? Or maybe an HND or HNC? You might be ready to go straight on to an Honours Degree or, for the truly dedicated, a Postgraduate level qualification? Whatever you want to do, we can help you do it. Our Foundation Degrees and Higher National programmes include work-based practices and experiences that will give you opportunities to develop the skills you need to progress into employment. We also offer a broad range of courses for continuing professional development, and if necessary, for starting a whole new career.
On Support Because we keep our class sizes small you can be sure you’ll get the attention you need while you learn. As well as tutorial support throughout your studies we offer a range of additional support services that will help make life that little bit easier and allow you to concentrate fully on learning. They include: careers advice, counselling, help finding part-time jobs, study support and welfare advice.
On Partnerships Our courses are validated by partners including Plymouth University; University of the West of England; Bath Spa University and University of Gloucestershire, as well as the awarding organisation Pearson. For professional courses we work with industry-standard organisations like the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, Chartered Institute of Marketing, Chartered Management Institute and the Chartered Institute of Building.
On Fees Our tuition fees are lower than many universities. If you study at City of Bristol College University Centre you can make some big savings. For example: our fees for full-time Foundation and Honours Degree courses for 2015-16 are just £6,000, that’s a third less than the £9,000 you could pay at a university. And that’s not all. Just like at a university, you can apply to Student Finance England for funding to support your studies at City of Bristol College University Centre. Naturally, tuition fees will vary depending on the course you wish to study, and eligibility for funding will depend on your personal circumstances.
Want to find out more? Visit gov.uk/studentfinance for details on tuition fee loans and maintenance grants or loans.

Not that you’ll want to leave – you’ll be too busy working through all of the bars, clubs, restaurants, cafés, theatres, comedy clubs, music venues, museum and galleries.
And, you can nominate, and then elect, student course representatives who will go to course review meetings and student forums.
HE Student Ambassadors Become a HE student ambassador and you’ll join a team that helps current and future students at events at the College and across the city. You’ll also offer advice and support at schools, and get the chance to share your experiences and successes at our annual graduation ceremony. Qualifications explained Sometimes it feels like you need a qualification just to understand all the different HE qualifications. To help out, here’s a summary of the main ones on offer at City of Bristol College. What Is A Degree?
What Is A Foundation Degree?
A Bachelors, or Honours Degree, usually takes three years of full-time higher level study to complete. It’s designed to give you a thorough understanding of a subject and develop analytical, intellectual and essay/dissertation writing skills. These level six degrees are highly attractive to employers, and create the possibility of progression to a masters degree or a higher education equivalent.
A Foundation Degree is a higher-level vocational qualification consisting of 240 credits at level four and five. It’s designed to help you develop: • Specialist skills and knowledge to maximise your employability in your chosen industry sector • Practical work experience skills • General work skills like reasoning, professionalism and work process management to either supervisory or management level • Enhanced skills, including communication, IT and problem solving We joined forces with partner universities and employers to design our foundation degrees. This ensures their quality, relevancy, and approval. Most can be studied full-time over two years, and some are available part-time over three years (see individual programme details). Whether you’ve just left school or college, want to develop your existing career, or change to a completely new one, a Foundation Degree will equip you with the necessary skills for your future. And once you’ve graduated you can choose whether to focus on your career, or carry on studying (usually for just one more full-time year) for an Honours Degree.
25
What Are Higher National Certificates And Higher National Diplomas (HNCs/HNDs)? These higher-level vocational qualifications are particularly popular within certain industries. They can be studied over one or two years, and mean you can combine work and study. Once you’ve completed your HND or HNC, you could top-up to a Foundation or Honours Degree. HNCs usually earn a minimum of 120 credits, and for HNDs it’s 240 credits.
What Is A Foundation Year/Year 0? These one-year courses are designed for students who don’t have the entry qualifications needed to start an Honours Degree.
What Is A Higher Apprenticeship? Higher Apprenticeships combine a range of on- and off-the-job training, and can vary in the length of time they take to complete. This means you can do an apprenticeship up to degree equivalent level that’s specifically designed to meet employers’ needs for higher level skills. If you want to brush up your studying skills before you start, our ‘Preparing for Higher Education’ section (see page 34) will help.
What Is Access To Higher Education? Access to Higher Education courses are for people want to study for a degree, and have life/work experience but only GCSE qualifications. They can prepare potential students for almost any academic or vocational field of higher education study at college or university, and provide an ideal route to a City of Bristol College University Centre Foundation Degree course.
What Are University Bitesize Modules? University bitesize modules are short, part-time university-level courses accredited by a partner university. They usually run for 10-15 weeks, for a few hours each week. These modules help you to progress in your career, or discover a new area of study without committing to a full qualification.
If you need more information about any of our courses, visit cityofbristol.ac.uk, or call 0117 312 5000
26
UCAS points The UCAS Tariff is a way of allocating points to post-16 qualifications used for entry to higher education. When you’re looking at courses you might notice that some need a minimum number of points as an entry requirement.

The student lowdown 42
It gave me a route to university, which I thought was lost to me.
Course: Access to Higher Education – Humanities At 22, Lindsay was a mature student when she studied for her course. She found the support of her tutors and other students invaluable, and has found new confidence through creating a route to university that she didn’t think she’d have. What made you choose your course?
How will your course benefit you?
Why did you choose to study at City of Bristol College?
I always wanted to study psychology. I went to a support day at the College Green Centre where they introduced me to the Higher Education programme and helped me enrol. The humanities pathway was the best fit because subjects like literary studies and history fitted around my chosen subject of psychology.
I was out of education for a few years, and the course has helped me regain, and apply, my academic skills. And it gave me a route to university, which I thought was lost to me.
I chose City of Bristol College because I got a really good impression when I studied there before. I knew the college could provide the best learning pathway for me and accommodate my needs.

The course has definitely developed me. I’m more confident.
Course: Management & Leadership, Level 5 Helen is a help desk and systems manager for Great Weston NHS Foundation Trust. She studied Management & Leadership to help further her career and open new professional opportunities. What made you choose your course? I’ve been in my position for 18 years now, and although I have a lot of experience I still needed a qualification in order to progress. I’d applied for higher positions in my organisation but had been turned down purely on the fact that I didn’t have a qualification.
And what made you decide to study at City of Bristol College? I wanted face-to-face teaching, which a lot of the CMI courses don’t offer – when studied online. I prefer an actual classroom with actual teachers and students. Plus, the price was very competitive and my organisation has very limited funds so money has to be used wisely.
How will this course benefit your plans for the future? I’ve already been upgraded at work, it got me thinking again, and it’s definitely developed me. I’m more confident.

The student lowdown 86
It was a massive mix – we had a big range of people from diverse backgrounds.
Course: Creative Arts Therapies Studies Bethan had just finished her A Levels when she applied for Creative Arts Therapies Studies at City of Bristol College. Having tested the water at UWE, she decided this course and the College were more suited to her. What made you choose your course? I was looking through the prospectus and I saw the Creative Arts Therapies Studies course. It was the first year it had been run and I was really interested in the course content; a combination of art and psychology kind of mixed together. I fell in love with it, got an application form, filled it out, and had an interview the following week.
Are there any aspects of your course that you found challenging or were a new area to learn? The financing and marketing module was very different because it’s maths based and not creative. But it was a real eye opener for me and without that module I wouldn’t be able to do the job I have now. I’m really glad I did it.
What were the other students like on your course? The students were lovely. It was a massive mix – we had a big range of people from diverse backgrounds, who had completely different ideas about how the course was going to be and what they wanted to do. 12 of us graduated in the first year, and I still talk to 10 of them!

Costs and Financial Support Money Matters – fees and costs
Extra support
Our courses will give you the qualifications you need, whilst leaving you with money to spend and less debt to pay off. Tuition fees vary depending on the course you want to study.
If you have children or an adult dependent on you, you may be able to get extra support. And if you have a disability, long-term health condition, mental health condition or specific learning difficulty, there may be an allowance to help towards the additional costs you might face.
Financial support You could be eligible for funding towards your course through Student Finance England. To qualify you must meet certain criteria like residency; previous study (i.e. whether you’ve taken a university level course before); age and whether the course meets the criteria for public funding.
Tuition fee loan You can apply to Student Finance England for a loan to cover tuition fees for part-time and full-time courses for each year you study. It’s a non-means-tested loan for all eligible students, and Student Finance England will pay your loan directly to the college. You don’t have to start paying anything back until the April after you have left your course and are earning over £21,000. Find out more from Student Finance England at www.gov.uk/student-finance
Maintenance grant/loan From 2016/17 maintenance grants will be replaced with loans (this will not impact students already at university). Maintenance support available in loans will increase to the highest level ever for students from low-income households – by £766 to £8,200 for those studying away from home.
Adult learner loans Adult Learner Loans may be available to help you to cover the tuition fees of your course. The loans were previously only available to learners over the age of 24 years applying for a Level 3 or Level 4 course but from May 2016 they will be available to students aged 19 and above applying to study courses from Level 3 to Level 6. This will not affect your entitlement to full funding for the first Level 3 qualifications if you are aged 19-23. The expanded remit will be available for applications from May 2016 for courses starting on or after 1 August 2016. Find out more at www.cityofbristol.ac.uk/ support/financial-support/advanced-learningloans/
Other costs Course materials: if you’re on a programme that includes field study or use of materials, you’ll need to contribute to the costs. Living costs: you’ll probably need around £12,000 a year for things like rent, food, bills, books, clothes and social activities.
121
I’m a part-time student, what support can I get? You may be eligible for a fee loan through Student Finance England, which is repayable in the same way as loans for full-time courses.
And what about Higher Apprenticeships? Contact the College so that we can assess whether you’re eligible for funding support from the Government – you may need to consider taking out an Advanced Learning Loan depending on your age. When you talk to us we’ll agree the costs involved for your employer and arrange to meet with them to discuss the programme in more detail.
What if I’m struggling financially once I’ve started my course? Whether you’re a full-time or part-time student, you can apply to the Student Opportunity Fund for a non-repayable grant, which is calculated by the level of your income against the level of your expenditure. You need to have already applied for your full entitlement from Student Finance England before you can receive money from this fund.
If you need more information about costs, visit cityofbristol.ac.uk, or call 0117 312 5000
