Apprenticeships At City of Bristol College, we’ve got an apprenticeship with your name on it. We offer over 40 career paths to choose from, and our proven combination of on-the-job training and College study will give you and your chosen career a real boost. And what’s more, you’ll be paid for your efforts. Earn as you learn

Types of apprenticeship

Apprenticeships are paid employment with training. It’s much the same as having a real job, and whether it’s engineering or hairdressing, you’ll work alongside experienced workers who will help you learn the ropes.

Intermediate Apprenticeship – this will provide you with worthwhile, functional skills and a relevant knowledge-based qualification.

While on your apprenticeship you will study towards achieving your qualifications at work and have the opportunity to attend College for assessments, which means that you’re getting the very best mix of practical and theoretical training. And perhaps better still, you’ll get paid! The national average weekly wage for an apprentice is £170 and, as your skills develop, your pay will increase too.

Advanced Apprenticeship – again, you can expect to receive valuable skills and training, with a knowledge-based qualification (slightly higher standard). Higher Apprenticeship – our most challenging yet rewarding apprenticeship will provide you with the skills you need, plus a knowledge-based qualification, such as a Foundation Degree.

How do I apply? Apprenticeships are open to anyone living in England over the age of 16 who is not already studying for a full-time course. The specific requirements will vary, depending on the type of apprenticeship, but they tend to be based on a mixture of academic ability, enthusiasm and knowledge of your chosen area, as well as any practical skills you may have.

Register your interest Register your interest in being an apprentice at www.cityofbristol.ac.uk/courses/apprenticeships/ Our team of dedicated skills advisors will support you through the recruitment process.

Emma Wherrett A Levels - History, English Literature, English Language and Film Studies

Emma gained a place at University of Oxford to study English Language and Literature having achieved outstanding results in her A Level studies. What were you doing before you came to City of Bristol College? Having suffered from anorexia since the age of 12 and received hospital education for a number of years, I was finally well enough to join the College in September 2013. How did you find the transition from hospital education to College? Despite initial low confidence and self- belief, I came on in leaps and bounds and managed to achieve four GCSEs and one AS in my first year of study. Having received A grades in my A2 level subjects of History, English Literature, English Language

and Film Studies, I am set to go to study English Language and Literature at University of Oxford. What was the highlight of your student experience? The quality of teaching has been great and I received lots of encouragement and emotional support. I’ve achieved beyond my imagination but I wouldn’t be where I am now without the help the College provided. My A Levels have helped me overcome something that had taken hold of my life. It’s helped me finally give life a go, and for the first time, I’m excited about the future.

Kiara Lula Jones Biomedical Science Extended Diploma Level 3

Medical Science student Kiara wants to be an active player in the fight against illness and disease – “I’d prefer to participate in solving this issue than simply being a spectator”. Why did you choose this course? A positive aspect of this course is that the outcome has so much to offer, so even if you’re unsure of your specific ambitions, it’s a great place to start. I intend on using this qualification in conjunction with chemistry A Level as a gateway for studying medicine at university. What are your course tutors like? The course tutors are evidently passionate about teaching. Encouragement is a profound element that I have noticed in many of the staff. And in the case of

unavoidable absence, tutors are highly professional in terms of forwarding teaching materials via email when necessary. Why would you recommend the College to others? I originally studied at a local sixth form, but this course seemed like a good opportunity to regain where I left off and has definitely met my expectations.

Lauren Murphy NVQ Level 2 Professional Cookery

Lauren had wanted to become a chef for as long as she could remember. At City of Bristol College she found great tutors and surroundings to hone her skills. Why did you choose to study at City of Bristol College?

What aspects of the course have you enjoyed the most?

I didn’t want to go to sixth form as it was too much like school and I wanted to get away from that environment. At College you get treated more like an adult and it prepares you more for future employment.

I have attended many competitions and events as part of the course. One of the competitions was at Bath Race Course and was judged by the Head Chef and Manager at the racecourse as well as Michelin star chef Josh Eggleton. I came second overall in the competition! I have also enjoyed work experience at Harvey Nicholls where I worked with the dessert chef.

What did you learn on the course? Throughout the course you are working in a proper restaurant that is open to the public, so it is a great insight into working in the catering industry. When the kitchen orders come in really quickly, you have to learn how to work together to make sure the food goes out on time. I have learnt to cook lots of different cuisines and techniques.

What are your plans for the future? I have enrolled onto the Level 3 course at City of Bristol College, so I can continue my learning and gain news skills. My dream job would be a Pastry Chef in Paris or working for a hotel catering for weddings.

My tutors have been fantastic. Really encouraging and helped us through any difficulties.

Amber Leonard Outdoor Adventure Level 3 Extended Diploma

Amber always had a keen interest in exercise and adventure training. City of Bristol College helped her develop the skills and qualifications to gain a place at university. What did you enjoy most about your course?

Why would you recommend studying at City of Bristol College to other people?

Definitely the people in my class, we had a lot of mature students and they came with life experience that I found really beneficial. I also enjoyed the physical aspect of my course. I’m quite sporty and it felt very natural to push myself in the physical challenges of the programme.

I’ve just had an amazing experience. My tutors have been fantastic. Really encouraging and helped us through any difficulties. My confidence has increased dramatically. My tutors encouraged me to do the Duke of Edinburgh Award, which was the most amazing experience, and that helped me gain a place at University. To be honest, they helped to change my life and I’m really grateful for their support.

Why did you choose to study at City of Bristol College? I was trying to decide what to do as a next step and a family member who works at the College introduced me to the course. I came to an open event, spoke to the tutors and I was so excited about what was involved in the course, I signed up pretty quickly.

What is your future goal and what are you going to be doing next year? I have been accepted onto a place at Northumbria University in Newcastle to do Phsychology with Criminology. I’ll also still be doing sport activities as I have a real passion for it.
