From the Mayor
There’s no such thing as a “lazy summer day” in Buckeye right now. We spent the last few months preparing the city’s 21/22 fiscal year budget to ensure you continue enjoying the quality services, programs and amenities you expect from us every day. Here are a few examples of some of the great things happening in Buckeye. The Sundance Recreation Center, located at Yuma and Dean, is scheduled to open in September and offer a variety of special interest classes and events, plus has a meeting space available to rent. Parks and Recreation staff are expanding the city’s sports programs to include neighborhood parks. Now families can play all kinds of sports closer to home without having to travel to a city operated park. This a great addition Mayor Mayor and the perfect way to get out and meet your neighbors! Jackie Meck Eric Orsborn With new elementary schools opening this Fall, we recognized the need to offer our Before and After School Enrichment program that will be available at the new John S. McCain III elementary school. The BASE program is a fun, safe affordable alternative to having your child home alone. The program provides homework assistance, educational activities, physical fitness, healthy snacks and other activities to keep your child’s mind and body active while you’re at work. In a few months, when the weather starts to cool down, we’ve got you covered there too with the return of our free, family-friendly events. All of these events will be in-person and another opportunity to get to know your neighbors in other parts of the city. Mark your calendars for the Dog Days of Buckeye on Oct. 2, the spectacular Halloween Carnival on Oct. 30, and our annual Holiday Tree Lighting event on Nov. 27. The Holiday Tree Lighting event also kicks-off our citywide holiday light contest! Looking ahead to 2022, the Buckeye Marathon is set for Jan. 8 and the amazing Buckeye Air Fair returns with a new line-up of stunt pilots and planes Feb. 18 through 20. During all of these great events, the much needed widening of I-10 between SR 85 and Verrado Way will be underway. We know this project will put a damper on your commute and errands, but it’s important we continue to support our local businesses during this construction project. Working with the Buckeye Valley Chamber of Commerce, we’ve created some great incentives for you to spend your hard earned money in Buckeye, especially in the downtown area. The Buy-In Buckeye program is a receipt reimbursement program for residents to support our local businesses. Simply continue shopping in Buckeye and submit your receipts via email for a chance to be reimbursed $25, $50 or $100. There are extra incentives for shopping in downtown Buckeye too! Official rules are on the Chamber’s website at buckeyevalleychamber.org/shop-buckeye. Tap the “Residents” button to read all about it. This program is simple and easy for both you and our businesses. They’ll need our support during this much needed construction project. We’ll also have some exciting economic development news to share with you in the next few months. Be sure to follow me on social media, Facebook @MayorEricOrsborn or Instagram @city-of-buckeye-mayor to get all the latest news and updates.

Buddy ball soccer is designed to create adaptive opportunities that empower youth of all abilities through the utilization of buddies (buddies must be older than 12 years or above and can be an older sibling, parent, guardian or family friend). One buddy is required per player and are asked to stay “tuned-in” to their player, to keep their player motivated and active. They will help provide encouragement and facilitate social interaction with other players and buddies. This program will take place once per week for up to 7 weeks.

Construction Underway on Sundance Park Phase II
C
onstruction of Sundance Park Phase II began April 6, 2021 when the ground breaking ceremony was held. Since that time, the City’s construction contractor – Willmeng Construction - has been busy clearing and grubbing the land and grading the site for park improvements. Most notable at the construction site is the excavation of the 3.2 acre fishing lake. The site for the lake was graded down to a depth of 16 feet for the eventual 14-ft. water depth. This depth will ensure the water does not get too hot for the stocked fish during warmer months. The City and the park designer, J2 Engineering, coordinated with Arizona Game and Fish Department on the lake design, who in turn, will stock the lake once open to the public in 2022. Park construction is partially funded through a $3 million grant from the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which is administered through Arizona State Parks and Trails. Funds from the Land and Water Conservation Fund Act of 1965 provides financial assistance to acquire and develop public outdoor recreation areas and facilities. Other funds for park construction are through impact fees collected from new-build homes and are one-time payments used to construct necessary public improvements and infrastructure needed
to accommodate new residents. General fund dollars, comprised of property and sales tax are also being used to build Phase II of Sundance Park. The splash pad and lake will be the first amenities available to the public, and are some of the most highly requested amenities requested by residents from public surveys. The additional four multi-use sports fields and two basketball courts will be more than double the current offerings at existing City parks. The existing community park opened to the public in 2012 when the City had a population of around 55,000 people, which is now fast approaching 100,000. The additional 38 acres to be constructed will increase the amount of publicly available developed park space offered by the City by 36 percent from 105 acres to 143 acres (this does not include open space and undeveloped land in Skyline Regional Park). We invite you to join us in 2022 when the City holds a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to welcome Buckeye residents to the expanded park. Check out future editions of the Eye on Buckeye for updates on park construction. For more information, please contact Robert Wisener, Administration and Project Manager at 623-349-6621 or rwisener@buckeyeaz.gov.
