BUCKEYE CITY COUNCIL Eric Orsborn, Mayor Craig Heustis, Vice Mayor Michelle Hess Tony Youngker Clay Goodman Jeanine Guy Patrick HagEstad

From the Mayor

I hope everyone had a great time at Buckeye’s Independence Day Celebration on July 2. It was another record crowd at the Buckeye Municipal Airport to celebrate our great country! Kudos to our Community Services staff for putting on another fantastic, free, family-friendly event. As Buckeye continues to grow, we take pride in ensuring our special events still have that small-town feel. If you cannot remember when Buckeye was a small-town, then you should make plans to attend the Grand Re-Opening of the Buckeye Valley Museum on Sept. 8. Renovations on the museum are complete and house

Mayor Mayor Jackie Meck Eric Orsborn

an impressive collection of our humble beginnings. The celebration continues all weekend and is a great way to learn about the rich and vibrant history of our community. There are more great events on the calendar as the weather cools down.

Movies in the Park return to Tartesso and Festival, the annual Halloween Carnival is Oct. 29, and the Dog Days of Buckeye, honoring four-legged family members is Nov. 12. A full list of all city events is at buckeyeaz.gov. On the business side of the city, Buckeye continues to be ranked in the top ten nationally as one of the fastest growing cities. To keep up with this growth, we remain focused on providing excellent services and amenities for you. This means Buckeye is committed to making significant investments in improving our streets and intersections, and enhancing our water portfolio. Since nearly 6,000 new jobs came online or were committed to in 2021, Buckeye is quickly becoming a fullservice city where you can live, work and shop close to home. New retail centers and service providers are focusing on Buckeye too. DMB Developers recently announced a 600,000 square foot outdoor center on Verrado Way, just north of I-10, Verrado Marketplace will feature big box retail, a movie theater, restaurants and specialty shops. On the south side of the freeway, Buckeye Commons is taking shape with a warehouse club retailer, big box retailers and sit down restaurants. While Costco has not made a formal announcement about coming to Buckeye, they have submitted plans to the city for review. In the health care sector, both Abrazo Community Health Network and Banner Health are planning full service hospitals at Verrado Way and I-10 within the next 18 to 24 months. This is just a brief recap of all the great things happening in Buckeye. You can keep up with the latest news and events, including the progress on the I-10 widening project between SR 85 and Verrado Way, by following me on social media, Facebook @MayorEricOrsborn or Instagram @city-of-buckeye-mayor.

COMMUNITY SERVICES CONSTRUCTION UPDATES Sundance Park Phase II

22865 W. Lower Buckeye Road Construction of Sundance Park Phase II is well underway. The lake is nearing completion and was filled with water from the Roosevelt Irrigation District Canal in June. In March, an Eagle Scout, Josef Gavagan, along with 25 volunteers worked with the Arizona Game and Fish Department to install fish habitat structures on the bottom of the lake. In April, the sports field lights for the two north soccer/football fields were installed along with the irrigation infrastructure for the turf. Other park amenities are moving forward as well. Construction of the splash pad, playground, two basketball courts, ramadas, lake pavilion, restroom, and northern parking lot will occur over the next several months with an anticipated opening in Spring 2023. Water used from the splash pad will drain into the lake and will also be used for turf irrigation, ensuring the water is used three different ways. The first use for the water is recreational use for the splash pad; the second as a source to fill the lake; and the third is to pump water out of the lake into the irrigation system to provide water for grass sports fields.

Town Park Parking Lot Expansion

(at the Buckeye Aquatic Center & Dr. Saide Recreation Center) – 207 N. 9th Street The Town Park parking lot expansion is complete, though some improvements, such as lighting may not be complete at the time this Eye on Buckeye is mailed. This project adds 140 additional parking spaces at the Buckeye Aquatic Center and Dr. Saide Recreation Center and now connects the two existing parking lots. This project adds much needed parking to the facilities in Town Park and improves safety. Previously, when the pool parking lot was full during the busy summer season, visitors needed to turn around making a three-point turn in the tight space.

Senior Center Kitchen Expansion 201 E. Centre Ave.

The Senior Center is getting a much needed expansion to its kitchen. This project adds 1,500 square feet to the kitchen and will also remodel the existing 500 square feet kitchen. This project will create a more efficient way to provide meals for Buckeye seniors served at the Senior Center and delivered to homebound residents. The number of meals prepared in the kitchen has greatly increased since the time the facility was built in 1983. Over the past three years, the number of meals prepared increased from 30,114 meals served in 2018 to 43,052 meals served in 2021. The additional space will also allow staff to prepare meals to meet a variety of specialized dietary needs, such as vegetarian, kosher, gluten free and dairy free. This project is anticipated to be complete in fall 2022.
