Germantown Road Ages: 21 years and older Fee: $75 in advance, $80 at the door Join the Germantown Area Chamber of Commerce for an enjoyable culinary and social experience guaranteed to satisfy any palate. With children activities, rides and games, arts and crafts shopping from over 400 local and national vendors, live entertainment, tasty food, car exhibits and the hilariously competitive Running of the Weenies, there is something for everyone. Running of the Weenies Saturday, September 10 Best dressed contest 11 a.m., race 11:30 a.m. Fee: Costume contest $10 per dog, race $35 per dog The Running of the Weenies is a race for those lovable Weinershaped Dachshunds. Presented by the Germantown Animal Shelter, these short but swift racers never fail to entertain. Preregistration is required by 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 7. At the Johnson Road Park location only, up to three bankers boxes of personal documents may be shredded and recycled. Computers, monitors or TVs (limit one), stereos and other electronic items will be collected for recycling by theCyperYard.com. Microwave ovens cannot be accepted. Choose your own distance, up to a six-mile loop. Bring a decorated bicycle or tricycle. Glow in the dark bike gear and flashing lights are encouraged. A size-appropriate helmet is required. Germantown Night Out Tuesday, October 4, 5 to 9 p.m. Homeowners across Germantown will be turning on their porch lights, locking their doors and stepping outside to visit with neighbors. The annual event is promoted by the City in observation of Crime Prevention Month. Some neighborhood associations organize large gatherings. However, participation can be as simple as inviting neighbors for conversation and light refreshments on a front porch or driveway. S’mores and Snores Family Camp Out and Outdoor Movie Friday, October 14 Tent set up begins at 4 p.m. Fee: $40 per tent (four person max), $10 for each additional camper Location: Farm Park, 2660 Cross Country Spend a night under the stars with family and friends. Relax by the campfire and enjoy a traditional cookout dinner and s’mores. Grab a sleeping bag and pillow and enjoy a family-friendly movie outdoors. A light breakfast will be served on Saturday. NIGHT RIDER BIKE RIDE Neighborhood Summit Tuesday, October 25, 5:30 to 8 p.m. Location: The Great Hall & Conference Center, 1900 S. Germantown Road The free Neighborhood Summit is presented by the Neighborhood Preservation Commission. The event begins with an opening reception where attendees enjoy delicious appetizers and peruse tables set up by neighborhood associations, commissions and other organizations of interest. Shelby County Mayor Mark H. Luttrell, Jr. will serve as keynote speaker. All residents are encouraged to make nominations for neighborhood awards which recognize those who make a difference in Germantown neighborhoods. Friday, October 28, 7 to 9:30 p.m. and Saturdays, October 29 and November 5, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Location: Fire Station 4, 3031 Forest Hill Irene Road The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program is a positive and realistic approach to prepare citizens for emergency and disaster situations. Through training, citizens learn basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace when professional responders are not immediately available to help during a disaster or emergency. Holiday Tree Lighting Friday, November 25 Outdoor festivities 5 p.m., tree lighting 5:30 p.m. Location: Municipal Park Lake, 1900 S. Germantown Road Watching the first flicker of lights on the holiday tree is a long standing tradition in Germantown. Families gather in Municipal Square to sing holiday songs, toast marshmallows, witness the lighting of the tree and celebrate the beginning of the holiday season. Following the outdoor festivities, merrymakers can enjoy refreshments and even visit with Santa inside City Hall. No rain date.
Germantown Holiday Parade Saturday, December 10, 2 p.m. Lining the City streets, residents watch as decorated floats, horses, school groups, clubs and booming marching bands wave to neighbors as they slowly make their way along the parade route. Be sure to stay until the end to get a glimpse of Santa aboard a Germantown fire truck. This year in support of the U.S. Marine Reserves Toys for Tots organization, uniformed Marines and volunteers will travel along the parade route to collect new, unwrapped toys for children. The parade begins at the corner of Kimbrough Road and Farmington Boulevard, proceeds west on Farmington Boulevard to Exeter Road and ends at Germantown Athletic Club. The rain date is December 11.

GERMANTOWN’S BIG READ GERMANTOW N’S BIG REA D 201 6 “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” The NEA Big Read in Germantown will focus on Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.” Activities will take place in the fall. Read with us now, then join in events beginning with a Tom Sawyer themed Pops in the Park on September 17. The City of Germantown is one of only 77 organizations nationwide to receive a grant to host an NEA Big Read project between September 2016 and June 2017. A program of the National Endowment for the Arts, the NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. Exhibit of Norman Rockwell Illustrations from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer October 1 through 31 Location: Germantown Community Library, 1925 Exeter Road An exhibit of Norman Rockwell illustrations from “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” 1936 book will be on display at the Germantown Community Library. The exhibit will also include a colorized portrait of Mark Twain. The illustrations and portrait are on loan from the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum in Hannibal, Missouri.
Book Club Kits October 1 through 31 Location: Germantown Community Library, 1925 Exeter Road Book clubs are encouraged to come to the library to check out a Tom Sawyer book club kit. These kits include copies of the book, bookmarks, a Germantown READS button and Big Read reader’s guides to generate discussion of the book. The Adventure Begins! Germantown’s Big Read Kick Off Saturday, October 1, 5 to 7 p.m. Location: Germantown Community Library, 1925 Exeter Road The Adventure Begins! The Big Read in Germantown will kick off at the Library with an official announcement by Mayor Mike Palazzolo. Festivities include fence painting, photo ops with Mark Twain, mule-drawn wagon rides, pie eating contest, a straw hat costume contest, games from the era, food trucks and more. All ages are invited.
The Adventure Begins! Art Contest Tuesday, October 4, 5 to 6 p.m. Location: Germantown Community Library, 1925 Exeter Road The Germantown Education Commission invites all local K-12 students to participate in an art contest based on “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.” A three-member panel will choose a winner from each grade level and prizes will be awarded. Racing in from thunderous rains, he invites the audience into his study for an intimate conversation filled with stories and anecdotes taken directly from Twain’s writings - including “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.” Ron Jewell’s performance has been hailed across the country as personable and touching, as critics and audience members alike have delighted in his retelling of Twain’s tall tales. Adult Coed Kickball Mondays, September through November Ages: 18 years and older Fee: $320 per team Location: Houston Levee Park, 9777 Wolf River Boulevard Team building, competition and nonstop fun combine to provide an excellent opportunity for corporate groups, churches and friends. League play takes place on Monday evenings at Houston Levee Park. Register early as this league fills quickly. Register through August 31.
Adult Fall Softball League Tuesdays and Thursdays, September to November Ages: 18 years and older Fee: $500 per team Location: Houston Levee Park, 9755 Wolf River Boulevard Area businesses, churches and organizations are encouraged to enter teams in this recreational league. Divisions include men’s recreational (Tuesday) and men’s church and coed recreational (Thursday). Teams play an eleven game schedule and an end-ofseason tournament. Register through August 31.

Carla is a USTA certified referee and umpire for professional and college tennis and served as an official in the U.S. Open in 2014 and 2015. Location The Farm Park driveway is located at 2660 Cross Country Drive – turn east on Stout Road from Germantown Road. Public parking is available at the Cloyes Soccer Fields. Overflow parking is available behind the Fire Station and adjacent to Germantown Elementary School.
Fall Park Hours The Farm Park is open to pedestrians from dawn to dusk unless reserved for a special event or during inclement weather. Farm Park gardens, barns, special amenities and restrooms are accessible during the morning hours from mid-March through November when staff is on-site and/or when programs, tours and field trips are scheduled.

Farm Hands Needed While they aren’t necessarily farmers, volunteer Farm Hands work with farm related events. Supporting farmers and artisans at the Farmers’ Market, educating the community through field trips and programming are just a few ways the Hands promote sustainable living. A variety of volunteer opportunities are available for adults and service groups.

Night Owls Nature Walk and Scavenger Hunt

Search for owls, deer, bats and other night-time creatures. The short family-friendly hike goes along the paved Greenway. FOR G EY BA R K PA R K Germantown Parks and Recreation is pleased to offer an off-leash park for citizens to spend quality time with their dogs. The park, located at 1695 Riverdale Road, offers a secured, fenced area where dogs can run, jump, play and socialize with others. Water and washing stations are available. Members use waste stations with baggies to help keep the area clean. Dog park users must purchase a membership. The fee is $40 for residents and $60 for non residents. There is a mandatory Power Point orientation for dog owners. Proof of inoculations (Rabies, Parvo and Bordatella) and residency is required. The park is open dawn to dusk, year round. The program combines educational assistance, recreation and enrichment activities, and is offered on all full days of school adhering to the Germantown Municipal School District calendar. Germantown Community Library Cards A library card is required to check out materials from Germantown Community Library. The card is available at no charge to Germantown residents, students and staff of Germantown K-12 public and private schools, students and staff of Union University’s Germantown Campus, Memphis School of Preaching, Germantown business owners and family members, active military personnel and their families and full-time and part-time City of Germantown employees. Collierville residents with a Collierville library card in good standing can receive a free library card with limited privileges. All others pay $50 for a yearly membership card.
Website and Databases Library cardholders can go online to look up account information, renew materials, place holds and search the collections of Wolf River Library Consortium libraries. The library’s online databases provide card-holding patrons with 24-hour access to a vast array of research and information resources. Books by Mail Germantown Community Library offers Books by Mail, a free service for homebound seniors. The library will mail regular print, large print or audio books to Germantown residents, age 60 or older, who are confined at home. There is no charge for shipping or return of library materials. Friends of the Germantown Community Library The Friends of Germantown Community Library support the library through fundraising and volunteer service. Membership is $10 for the calendar year.
