INFORMATION FOR LIVING THE GOOD LIFE IN GERMANTOWN

Engage with the community and reap the benefits. In most of this country, the arrival of autumn evokes images of cooler days and nights, leaves turning to red and gold and blanketing lawns, the return of big yellow school buses to neighborhood streets, crowded bleachers at Friday night football games, and more.
library, tend the garden and support the programming at the Farm Park. Civic organizations provide funding to supplement resources at the Community Library, ball fields, parks and other spaces. The list of public-private partnerships is a long one.
For Germantown, summer lingers and fall shows up eventually, rapidly giving way to the seasonal hustle and bustle of the winter holidays. Our youngsters are in the classrooms early in August, weeks before the Athletic Club pool shuts down. Fresh evergreens are carted home for holiday decorating before the mountains of leaf-stuffed bags disappear from the curbs. It makes for a lively mix of activities and events, as you’ll find in this issue of FYI, detailing all the marvelous opportunities for recreation, entertainment, personal improvement and enrichment for the remainder of 2013.
The outcome is a marvelous win-win-win: city government improves services despite constrained resources, volunteers experience the satisfaction of adding value to the lives of others, and residents and visitors benefit from the fiscal, environmental and social sustainability that is an everyday endeavor and reality in Germantown.
Those opportunities are clearly a mainstay in what makes Germantown an exceptional community. In city hall conversations, we increasingly refer to Germantown’s attributes as “quality of place”. It’s a way of identifying the role of municipal government in making a community a really good place to live, work, play or visit. It has to do with a sense of safety and security (police, fire and ambulance), aesthetics (regulation and code compliance), place making (parks and playing fields and other places where people gather), sustainability (environmental practices and financial policies) and more. As much as those are driven by the decisions of your elected officials and delivered by city personnel, all those elements rely on the engagement of you, your neighbors and friends, not only as consumers but as contributors. Our professional police and fire officers are joined by reserve volunteers and CERT-certified citizens. Garden clubs, the Beautification Commission, the Public Art Promenade committee, neighborhood associations and businesses enhance streetscapes and public buildings. The Environmental Commission promotes a “green” Germantown. Volunteers supplement the staffing at the
If you are engaged, connected or otherwise associated with any or many of those endeavors, a huge and hearty “thank you” from city officials and staff. However, if you are looking for just the right place to add your interest and expertise and time, here are some suggestions: •M ost of the 20-plus city boards and commissions are appointed each December. Most terms are for one year; most meet once a month; check the website www.germantown-tn.gov to find the list and descriptions. Applications will be available in November at city hall or online •C ontact the fire department, police department, library, Farm Park, parks and recreation, GPAC or animal shelter for volunteer positions specific to each one. •C onsider a civic club. Kiwanis, Lions and Rotary all have Germantown chapters. Check with the Germantown Charity Horse Show Association or Germantown Festival Association to help with their events.
