SPECIAL EVENTS | MAY - AUGUST Equestrian Days at the Farm Park

June 4 to June 7, 9 to 11 a.m. Visit the Farm Park during Germantown Charity Horse Show week for demonstrations on a wide variety of equestrian sports topics. Watch show horses practice and train. Stop by the stable to view the equestrian history exhibit sponsored by the Germantown Museum Committee. Little visitors will be able to check out a stick horse to ride the trails.

Farm Park Farmers’ Market

Thursdays, June 5 to August 29, 5 to 7:30 p.m. Great meals begin here! The Farm Park Farmers’ Market is a producer-only market offering a wide variety of high quality local foods, produce, meats, art and crafts. Special programming, educational workshops and activities - including chef demonstrations, live music, performances and more - are woven into the market experience. Farm Park entry is next to the Cloyes Soccer Fields on Cross Country Drive. Overflow parking is available at Germantown Elementary School. Shuttles are available for those needing assistance.

TWRA Mid-South Junior Fishing Rodeo

Saturday, June 7, 9 to 11 a.m. Ages: 6 to 12 years Location: Johnson Road Park, 2970 Johnson Road Come early to claim a spot around the lake. One fishing pole per participant is allowed. Parents can assist in baiting or taking the fish off the hook. Prizes are awarded in each age group. No rain date. The rodeo is co-sponsored by MLGW.

Youth Fishing Clinic

Thursday, July 10, 10 a.m. to noon Ages: 8 to 12 years Fee: $10, pre-registration is required Location: TBD This clinic will engage young people in fishing under the supervision of recreation staff and Park Rangers. Clinic topics include safety and regulation, baits and lures, fishing equipment and care, casting, finding fish and conservation. Sixth Annual Small Fry Triathlon

Saturday, September 13 2 to 3 years, 10 a.m. 4 to 6 years, 10:30 a.m. Fee: $5, includes a race T-shirt Location: Farmington Park, 2029 Cordes Preschoolers run, bike and swim (run through fire truck spray) to the finish line, where everyone receives a medal. Fireworks Extravaganza

Friday, July 4, events at 5 p.m., fireworks at 9:10 p.m. Location: Municipal Park, Exeter Road Celebrate the nation’s birthday with live music, moon bounces, games, crafts and refreshments. Then be amazed by a spectacular fireworks display. No rain date.

Country and Western, Soul and Latino line dances are easy and fun to learn. This class is ongoing, with new beginner classes starting in May. Advanced dances are taught the last half hour.

Overton Square and Sun Studio Thursday, June 5, 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Fee: $5 transportation, plus $10.89 guided tour of Sun Studio, lunch on your own Overton Square is a unique, recently restored Memphis destination that brings together people of all ages to shop, work, eat or be entertained in a relaxed environment. Stroll the square and have lunch in one of the several restaurants available. Enjoy a guided tour of Sun Studio, the birthplace of Rock N’ Roll. Special arrangements can be made for those who can’t climb steps.

Weird and Unusual Animals Predators to Prey

Thursday, July 10, 7 p.m. Location: Germantown Community Library, 1925 Exeter Road Predators to Prey features animals that illustrate the cycle of life and how every carnivore, herbivore or plant in the food chain plays a vital role to our thriving ecosystem. Iron play, chipping, putting, driving, course knowledge and etiquette will be covered. Instruction is provided by the GCC professional staff of Keith Penke, Austin Chinn and Cody Schwanke. Junior Legends Recreational Soccer Germantown Adult Baseball League

Registration begins May 1 Ages: 18 years and older Fee: $1,600 per team Location: Cameron Brown Park, 8628 Farmington Boulevard This adult baseball league is composed of current and former college players and adults interested in continuing their baseball careers. Germantown Youth Cheerleading

Register through Friday, June 13 Ages: Girls, kindergarten to sixth grade Fee: $135 resident, $172 non-resident, plus $123.57 for those needing a new uniform This program provides a positive, fun and safe environment to learn the fundamental skills of cheerleading. Girls are grouped by grade to cheer for Germantown Football League teams and participate in a cheer-off to conclude the season. The goal is to encourage good sportsmanship, teamwork and self confidence. Residents must provide verification of residency. The Legends Soccer Club focuses intensely on creating brave creative leaders for life. The no guilt, no shame, no blame philosophy gives kids the confidence to get out of their comfort zone and create the big play in any situation. The Legends program provides a comprehensive recreational soccer program for boys and girls ages 6 to 19. Fall practices begin in late August with the season kicking off in September. The Legends philosophy is rooted in individual skill and confidence development. Competitive coaches provide additional skills training on a weekly basis to complement the players training and playing schedule. Future Legends - U6, U8 and U10 boys and girls recreational soccer includes a free skills session each week during the regular season Jr. Legends – U12 to U19 recreational soccer program TOPSoccer – The Outreach Program for Soccer is a communitybased training and team placement program for young athletes with disabilities. The purpose is to give every player a chance to experience the joy of soccer. Skills Club – U7 to U12 boys and girls seeking an additional challenge with a desire to take their game to the next level. This is a supplemental program. Players must be registered in a Legends recreational soccer program. The Skills Club serves as a pre-requisite for the Academy and competitive teams. Academy Team – U7 to U8 boys and girls teams coached by Legends staff while playing in the recreational soccer program.

Germantown Croquet Club

Enjoy fun-filled days at Camp Houston Levee and experience a summer packed full of outdoor activities, guest speakers, nature education, field trips, music, games, arts and crafts and swimming. Players are engaged in activities designed to give the complete camp experience. New skills, proper technique are taught in a fun way that expands player’s minds to new possibilities. Players learn skill concepts and how they relate to build a solid foundation. Players are challenged to learn new moves, positioning and fundamentals of the game. Bricks4Kidz: Angry Birds 9 a.m. to noon Campers will be challenged to build and destroy a level from the game Angry Birds. Set your birds to flight by launching them from catapults and slingshots to destroy pigs. Build a working launcher and create things to knock down. Campers will build different colored birds and accessories using LEGO® Bricks, along with proprietary model kits. Free supervision is provided from noon to 1 p.m. for children registered for both camps. Campers provide their own lunch.

Bricks4Kidz: Spinning Ninja Camp 1 to 4 p.m. Learn about the history of ninjas and ancient Chinese civilization. Whether creating a maze from bricks or building a spinning ninja, this camp is sure to excite any child who loves LEGO® bricks. In addition to playing with Ninjago® Ninjas and LEGO® board games, campers will use imagination and creativity as they attempt to create things related to games out of LEGO® Bricks.

Junior Scientist Summer Program Monday to Friday, July 14 to 18 Half day: 9 a.m. to noon Full day: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ages: Kindergarten to fifth grade Fee: Half day $175, full day $295 The Junior Scientist program is all about making science fun. The hands-on, all-new projects combine indoor and outdoor activities for a week full of exciting science exploration and experimentation. Campers create fun and safe chemical reactions, experiment with physical forces, construct engineering projects, tinker with technology as learn about green science and biology.

Creative Art Lab Summer Program Monday to Friday, July 21 to 25, 9 a.m. to noon Ages: Kindergarten to fifth grade Fee: $175 Get ready for a week of complete creative control. Campers enjoy five days of sketching, sculpting, painting and creating 3-D and recycled art. Instructors show examples and techniques for each project, then encourage children to use their own idea and techniques as they experiment with a wide variety of materials to discover their own artistic style. Snack time, games and indoor/outdoor play are a part of each day. A free hour of supervised lunch will be provided for participants who also enroll in the afternoon Groovy Girls program. Campers provide their own lunch.

Groovy Girls Summer Program Monday to Friday, July 21 to 25, 1 to 4 p.m. Ages: Kindergarten through fifth grade Fee: $175 Groovy Girls enjoy fashion design, jewelry making, baking and decorating delicious summer treats, scrapbooking and tie-dye art. Free time is available each day for participants to work on a project of their choice. The week will end with a Groovy Girl party. Free supervision is provided during lunch for those also registered for the Creative Art Lab. Campers provide their own lunch.

Safety City

Monday through Friday, June 9 to 13, 9 to 11:30 a.m. Ages: 5 and 6 year olds entering kindergarten or first grade Fee: $45 Location: Germantown Church of Christ, 8723 Poplar Pike Registration: Applications are available online at Germantowntn.gov or at Germantown Municipal Center, Germantown Parks and Recreation Office, Germantown Community library, Germantown Athletic Club and most area preschools. Safety City is an education program for five and six year olds entering kindergarten or first grade. The program consists of short classes taught by community experts. Safety topics deal with fire, animals, weather, bicycles, guns, pools, pedestrian crossings, cars and seat belts, boats and homes. Children also travel about Safety City daily and learn to follow the “rules of the road” by riding bicycles or walking as pedestrians along its streets and sidewalks. At least one adult and several teenage volunteers supervise each group of students. Space is limited. Registration is required and tuition must be paid at the time of registration. The Germantown Public Safety Education Commission sponsors the camp. Germantown Church of Christ hosts the program. Bits, Bytes and Bots Lego Mindstorm Robotics Monday to Friday, June 2 to 6, 9 a.m. to noon Fee: $175 members, $190 non-members This exciting camp teaches boys and girls to build and program the ALL NEW LEGO® Mindstorms® NXT robots, the coolest robot available. Skills include reacting to intruders, moving objects to different locations, stinging an intruder with a robot tail or beating an opponent at LEGO® Sumo. This course introduces students ages 8 to 14 to the power of Redstone, the foundation of all advanced technology in Minecraft®. Make Your Mark on the World Monday to Friday, July 14 to 18, 1 to 5 p.m. Ages: 9 to 13 years Fee: $180 In this exciting summer art camp, students have the opportunity to collaborate on a mural project to be displayed at Germantown Performing Arts Center. In keeping with the celebration of GPAC’s 20th anniversary, mixed media artist Angi Cooper will guide participants through the collaborative processes of exploring cultural designs and patterns, sketching, painting and media processes that will culminate in a final group mural project. This is a wonderful opportunity for young artists to be part of a fun community project that will be permanently displayed at GPAC.

FARM PARK C’MON OUT TO THE FARM PARK! The Bobby Lanier Farm Park is a working model of a community based suburban farm park which demonstrates, promotes, educates and advocates for a sustainable, healthy and supportive community. The mission of the Farm Park is accomplished through agriculture and stewardship. The 10 acre working farm features a diversified community garden using organic growing methods. Events include children’s programming, a Farmers’ Market, live music, cooking demonstrations, garden talks, visiting farm animals and garden tours. A variety of volunteer opportunities are available for adults, teens, families, scout troops and service groups. Those interested in volunteering to assist at the Farm Park Farmers’ Market, special events and weekly programs are invited to join the Farm Park Farm Hands volunteer group.

Community Garden Project at the Farm Park

The community garden is a central feature at the Farm Park. In its third year of operation, the BLFP Community Garden Association is busy preparing for a bountiful summer harvest. The purpose of this communal garden is to allow novice and experienced gardeners alike the opportunity to learn to grow a variety of fresh, natural produce. New member applications will be accepted as space is available. Equestrian Days at the Farm Park

June 4 to 7, 9 to 11 a.m. Visit the Farm Park during the week of the legendary Germantown Charity Horse Show to enjoy a “smorgasbord” of demonstrations on a wide variety of equestrian sports topics. Watch show horses practice and train. Stop by the stable to view the equestrian history exhibit sponsored by the Germantown Museum Committee. Little visitors will be able to check out a stick horse to ride the trails.

Farm Park - Junior Master Gardener Camp

Monday to Friday, July 21 to 25, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Ages: 6 to 12 years Fee: $85 per student, pre-registration required Farm Park Farm Hands and local master gardeners lead young farmers in the Health and Nutrition Series as Junior Master Gardeners. Children should come dressed for farm chores (they will get dirty) and exploration. Gloves and closed toed shoes are required. Lunch will be provided. Youth will work together as a team, sharing the responsibilities of vegetable gardening. Children are required to actively participate and will earn a certificate at the end of the program.

Books by Mail

Germantown Community Library offers Books by Mail, a free service for homebound seniors. The library will mail regular print, large print or audio books to Germantown residents, age 60 or older, who are confined at home. There is no charge for shipping or return of library materials. Germantown Community Library Cards

A library card is required to check out materials from Germantown Community Library. The card is available at no charge to Germantown residents, students and staff of Germantown public and private schools, students and staff of Union University’s Germantown Campus, Germantown business owners and family members, active military personnel and their families, and full-time City of Germantown employees. All others pay $50 for an annual membership card.

The Friends of Germantown Community Library support the library through fundraising and volunteer service. Membership is $10 for the calendar year. Visit the Friends Bookstore to find gently used adult and children’s books, videos, DVDs and recorded books. Prices range from $.50 to $5.

A special preview sale just for Friends of the Library members will take place on Thursday, May 1, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Memberships will be available for purchase at the door. Quick Fic Picnics Mondays, June 9, June 23, July 14 and 28, noon Enjoy the summer and discover new favorite reads with a brown bag picnic in the park. Bring your lunch and relax as we read a story to the group or pass around a book to read aloud together. Drinks will be provided. Bring a folding chair or picnic blanket. Meet in the wooded area to the north of the library building. Each meeting will feature a different genre. The picnic will move indoors in the case of inclement weather.

This fun and fast moving live show features Wendy ‘The Singing Scientist’ award winning songwriter, singer, author and real scientist and Flumpa, the adventurous tree frog. This nationally performing group is celebrating their 20th anniversary this year.

The Magic of Science with Tommy Terrific Tuesday, June 10, 4:30 p.m. This summer, Tommy Terrific’s Wacky Magic show has created a new version called “The Magic of Science”. The show will feature a Magic Trunk containing a huge Magician’s Handbook. Inside the Magician’s Handbook are magic tricks representing a unique branch of science, from Chemistry to Physics, from Biology to Astronomy and beyond. With the help of the Magician’s Handbook, the kids guide Tommy Terrific through a magical adventure where these branches of science come alive in wacky and unexpected ways.

Animal Tales’ Animal Science Tuesday, June 17, 4:30 p.m. So many different animal types. The Animal Science program will introduce and explore the topic of animal classifications. Participants will meet and learn about birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, invertebrates and fish. The audience will be asked to interact with the animals through hands-on volunteering, question and answer and crowd participation activities. All are guaranteed an up-close and personal experience.

Puppets on the Loose in Pajamas Friday, June 20, 4:30 p.m. Uh-oh! It’s bedtime for the puppets, but they’re not ready to go. Don your jammies and join these crazy puppets as they listen to their favorite bedtime stories. Cookies and milk are served after the show.

Fizz, Pop, Boom with Mr. Bond and the Science Guys Tuesday, July 1, 4:30 p.m. Mr. Bond and his mad scientists demonstrate a broad range of science areas with tornado simulations, sound, optical illusions and of course, explosions.

Predators to Prey Thursday, July 10, 4:30 p.m. Predators to Prey features animals that illustrate the cycle of life and how every carnivore, herbivore or plant in the food chain plays a vital role to our thriving ecosystem. Meet Elliot, the Eurasian Eagle Owl, and a number of other carnivores and herbivores.

Spin, Pop, Boom! with Mad Science of the Mid-South Tuesday, July 15, 4:30 p.m. Children will be enthralled with the exotic sounds of the didgeridoo tubes and the sight of a mad scientist creating an extra hand (to help with some of the more complicated experiments, of course). An explosion of foam will help end this event and leave the audience begging for more.

Puppets on the Loose on Vacation Friday, July 18, 4:30 p.m. The puppets are ready for vacation. Join them for boisterous stories about relaxing, carefree getaways.

Super Science Tennessee Tuesday, July 22, 4:30 p.m. From explosions to bubbling potions, from atoms to the properties of light waves, Super Science will introduce participants to the wonders of the physical world.

Animal Tales Reptile Scales & Tails Thursday, July 31, 4:30 p.m. For centuries, reptiles have intrigued and horrified people, often due to simple misunderstandings. We will attempt to reverse these misunderstandings with live reptile ambassadors. Participants will be asked to interact with the animals through question and answer, audience participation and hands-on volunteering. Everyone will have the opportunity to find out if snakes are really slimy.
