Adult Valentine Dance

Friday, February 14, 7 to 10 p.m. Fee: $10 per person Location: Pickering Center, 7771 Poplar Pike Dance the night away to favorite 50s and 60s tunes as Alex Ward and his Pig and Whistle Show provide record-spinning entertainment. Soft drinks and appetizers are served. Alcohol is prohibited. Space is limited. Tickets must be purchased in advance at the Parks and Recreation office.

Second Annual Silent Auction Benefitting Germantown Animal Shelter

Saturday, February 15, 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets: $15 in advance, $20 at the door Location: Pickering Center, 7771 Poplar Pike Items up for bid include pieces from local artists, sports memorabilia, offerings from local restaurants, unique household items and much more. Money raised will be used to fund upgrades to the animal shelter and provide a safer, more efficient environment for the animals. The event is hosted by the Friends of The Germantown Animal Shelter. Advance tickets are available at the Germantown Animal Shelter, 7700 Southern Avenue. Arbor Day Dogwood Tree Give-Away

Friday, March 7, 9 to 11 a.m. Location: Germantown Crossing shopping center, vFarmington Boulevard at Germantown Road Dogwood seedlings are available to residents who show proof of residency with a utility bill and valid driver license. All seedlings are Tennessee grown and are distributed on a first-come, firstserved basis. Discount coupons for the Farm Park Fruit Tree Sale will be available for the first 100 customers. The Germantown Tree Board, Beautification and Parks and Recreation Commissions present the event. The rain date is March 8.

SPECIAL EVENTS | JANUARY - APRIL Farm Park Fruit Tree Sale

Friday, March 7, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Location: Bobby Lanier Farm Park, entrance drive on Cross Country Road, north of Germantown Elementary The first ever Farm Park Fruit Tree Sale takes place in conjunction with Germantown’s Arbor Day celebration. The goal of this project is to offer a great variety of hardy, disease-resistant fruit trees that produce well in this region. Prices range from $15 blackberries to $60 4-in-1 peach trees, with prices and varieties in between. Other favorites include apple, pear, muscadine grape, plum, fig, apricot and persimmon. Farm Park staff and local Master Gardeners will be on hand to offer buyers training in the selection, planting, care and harvest of the fruit trees. Rain date is March 8. A price list will be available online at thefarmpark.org after February 15.

After-Dark Easter Egg Hunt

Friday, April 11, egg hunt at dark Age: 9 to 12 years Location: Cameron Brown Park, 8628 Farmington Boulevard Bring flashlights for an after-dark egg hunt. Concessions are available for purchase. Eggs are filled with candy, so bring along a bag to collect goodies. Registration deadline is Wednesday, April 9. Rain date is Tuesday, April 15.

Camp Houston Levee Registration

Have an outrageous summer with Germantown Parks and Recreation. Enjoy fun-filled days at Camp Houston Levee packed with outdoor activities, guest speakers, nature education, field trips, music, games, arts and crafts and sports. Priority registration for Germantown residents takes place Monday, March 31 and Tuesday, April 1, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Germantown Parks and Recreation office and continues until capacity is reached. If capacity is not reached, non-residents may register Wednesday and Thursday, April 2 and 3, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or until capacity is reached. Call 757-7375 to check availability. The camp fee is $499. A deposit of $249.50 is due at registration. The remaining balance is due on or before May 9. Parents must provide a Germantown water bill as verification of residency and a copy of the child’s birth certificate. If participants are making a partial payment, a refund will not be given unless their spot is filled. Campers must be six years old by June 2. Space is limited and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. A daily snack is provided. Campers bring their own lunch. East Shelby Softball League

Registration: January 6 to February 15 Age: Girls ages 7 to 18 years Fee: $115 Germantown/Collierville resident, $165 non-resident Player evaluation: Saturday, March 1 Germantown and Collierville are teaming up to offer a new recreational softball league for girls. The league goal is to offer a fun and safe environment where girls learn fundamental softball skills while forming relationships that will last a lifetime. Taekwondo

Students participate in a variety of activities while earning a new rank in each session. The class is taught by Holly Hardin, third degree black belt with 20+ years experience working with kids. There will be light contact for students at the green belt level or above. A uniform can be purchased at the beginning of the session, but is not required.


SPORTS Recreational Soccer

Registration: through February 2 Fee: $100 resident, $155 non-resident Germantown Junior Legends provides a comprehensive recreational soccer program for boys and girls ages 6 to 19. Practices begin in late February, games on March 22. The Legends philosophy is rooted in individual skill and confidence development. Germantown Country Club Spring Showcase

Tuesday, March 18 to Thursday, March 20 Fee: $40 plus tax (includes cart and green fee) Gather your group of golfing buddies and take advantage of this rare opportunity to play the championship golf course at Germantown Country Club. No membership is required. The rate is a $38 discount from regular guest fee. A tee time is required for all groups. For a modest fee, enjoy competitive play with other adult croquet enthusiasts. Club benefits include weekly scheduled play time, use of croquet equipment, instruction and club socials. Germantown Baseball League

Germantown Baseball League is a community based not-for profit organization that provides high quality youth baseball at Cameron Brown and Bob Hailey fields for athletes ages 6 to 18. YOUNG FARMERS REACH Youth Enrichment Program

REACH offers healthy choices for expanding creativity, learning new skills and having fun with friends. Structured to be beneficial for students and convenient for parents, the program challenges students to REACH for something more. Each class meets twice per week for three weeks at each school. REACH Spring Courses

Some classes may not be available for all sessions. Taekwondo – Looking for an alternative to channel energy? This introductory class improves self confidence, self-control, coordination, strength and memory through martial arts. Instructor, Holly Hardin, is a third degree black belt with many years of experience teaching young students.

Running Club – Running for fitness can be fun. Each session brings a new slightly more difficult challenge. Participants also learn about strength training, stretching and nutrition. Running does not have to be competitive or looked upon as a punishment. Bring water bottles, dress for the weather and strive for the class goal of two miles. SNAG Golf – Using age appropriate SNAG equipment, students learn proper technique, safety practices, etiquette and basic golf skills including driving, chipping and putting. Tennis – This introductory class is guaranteed to keep students active as they learn tennis basics. Students must provide their own age appropriate tennis racquet. Young Farmer Program – The Farm Park brings the Young Farmers program to school. Farm Managers lead students in classroom discussion and activity on food and farm related topics. Junior Scientists –Using hands-on activities and experiments, explore the basics of biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, technology, earth science and green science.

Germantown Community Library Cards

A library card is required to check out materials from Germantown Community Library. The card is available at no charge to Germantown residents, students and staff of Germantown K-12 public and private schools, students and staff of Union University’s Germantown Campus, Germantown business owners and family members, active military personnel and their families and full-time City of Germantown employees. All others pay $50 for an annual membership card.

Website and Databases

Library cardholders can visit Germantown-library.org to look up account information, renew materials, place holds and search the collections of Wolf River Library Consortium libraries. The library’s online databases provide card-holding patrons with 24-hour access to a vast array of research and information resources. Germantown Community Library now offers card holders access to the READS eLibrary and OneClickDigital for eBooks and eAudiobooks.

Books by Mail is a free service for homebound seniors. The library will mail regular print, large print or audio books to Germantown residents, age 60 or older, who are confined at home. Friends of the Germantown Community Library

The Friends of Germantown Community Library support the library through fundraising and volunteer service. Membership is $10 for the calendar year. Visit the Friends Bookstore to find gently used adult and children’s books, videos, DVDs and recorded books. Prices range from $.50 to $5.

The GRHGC has more than 15,000 reference materials in its collection. Materials are available for the United States and some European countries. DISCOVERY FRIDAYS AT THE FARM PARK

C’mon out to the Farm Park! The Bobby Lanier Farm Park is a 10-acre education and demonstration center for sustainable living through agriculture and stewardship. The park will re-open in the spring with notable enhancements to the horse barn thanks to the Germantown Charity Horseshow. Sustainable Sites Initiative standards are being used in the overall master plan for all park improvements, demonstrating the City’s desire to practice and demonstrate environmental stewardship. Farm Park Travel Tour: P. Allen Smith’s Garden Home at Moss Mountain Farm

Wednesday, April 9, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Fee: $150 for the tour and transportation, payable to Cline Tours, a $75 non refundable deposit required at registration Moss Mountain Farm is home to designer P. Allen Smith, an award-winning designer, gardener and lifestyle expert. The Garden Home at Moss Mountain Farm sits on top of a ridge overlooking the Arkansas River Valley just outside of Little Rock. Travelers will depart Germantown at 7 a.m. and arrive at Moss Mountain Farm by 11 a.m. for lunch and a leisurely afternoon tour of the home and gardens. American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Training

Participants must be at least 16 years of age and know the elementary backstroke, sidestroke, breaststroke, front and back crawl and butterfly. Swimming skills evaluation and online requirements must be completed before course work begins.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Training

Pilates

Fee: Starting at $30 per session, by appointment only Stop by the Pilates of Memphis Studio at Germantown Athletic Club to incorporate a whole new element to your workout. Pilates of Memphis offers private and group sessions to members and non-members. The studio includes reformers, a cadillac, high and low chairs, barrels and other professional Pilates equipment. Piano Adventure

January 25, 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. Take a journey around the globe with the piano. Visit Mozart and Bach in Europe, dance a salsa in Cuba and jam with the jazz greats in Chicago.

Irish Fiddle Jam

March 1, 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. Join this lively and toe-tapping musical adventure featuring violinist and fiddler Donna Wolf. The show will highlight traditional Irish and Celtic tunes along with a variety of violins and fiddles.

Memphis Drumline

April 5, 10:30 a.m. Celebrate spring with an outdoor concert in the GPAC grove featuring the very best percussionists in Memphis. Picnic lunches, blankets and chairs are encouraged.

Little Mozarts

The Little Mozart Group is a string orchestra for students 7 to 11 years of age. Rehearsals take place Thursdays from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. Student placement is based on ability, talent and skill. Maturity and age are also taken into consideration.

Young Mendelssohns

The Young Mendelssohn Group is a full orchestra for students 11 to 14 years of age. Designed to hone orchestral skills and further develop abilities, this intermediate program prepares students to advance into the GYSO. Rehearsals take place Thursdays from 5:45 to 7 p.m.

GERMANTOWN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER GPAC Youth Symphony Orchestra

Under the direction of Dr. Pu-Qi Jiang, the GPAC Youth Symphony Orchestra is a full orchestra consisting of strings, winds, brass, percussion, harp and keyboard. Admitted by audition, GYSO musicians are advanced students from 14 to 19 years of age. Members participate in a 30-week season including orchestral rehearsals, sectional rehearsals, master classes guest soloists, weekly aural training and music appreciation sessions. Students rehearse on Saturday afternoons from 1:30 to 4:30 at GPAC. Choirs rehearse from 12:30 to 1:30pm. The GYSO spring performance is scheduled for May 3, at 7:30 p.m

All Children’s Theatre Summer Production Auditions

“Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, Jr.” (Musical) and “Treasure Island” (Non-musical) Monday and Tuesday, April 14 and 15, 5 p.m. Young actors, ages 6 to 18, are needed for summer musical and non-musical productions. Both shows will audition at the same time. Actors should choose one of the two days to attend auditions to be considered for either show.
