This year marks the 44th weekend of free, family friendly fun! With children activities, rides and games, arts and crafts shopping from over 400 local and national vendors, live entertainment, tasty food, car exhibits and the hilariously competitive ‘Running of the Weenies’, there is something for everyone. Date: September 19, 7:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Locations: Johnson Road Park, 2950 Johnson Road and Public Services Complex, 7700 Southern Avenue Materials collected at both locations include household construction-related debris, concrete, rocks, tires without rims, lawn mowers, bikes, grills and 20-pound gas grill tanks. At the Johnson Road Park location only, up to three kitchen trash bags of personal documents can be shredded and recycled. Computers, monitors or TVs (limit one), stereos and other electronic items will be collected for recycling by theCyperYard. com. Microwave ovens are not accepted. Proof of Germantown residency is required and only homeowner-generated materials are accepted. Amnesty Dumpster Day is sponsored by the City of Germantown and the Environmental Commission. Small Fry Triathlon
Saturday, September 19 Ages 2 to 3 years, 10 a.m., ages 4 to 6 years, 10:30 a.m. Fee: $7, register by August 28 to receive a T-shirt Location: Farmington Park, 2085 Cordes Preschoolers are introduced to the running, biking, swimming (well, running through fire truck spray) competition of triathlons. Pops in the Park Concert
Saturday, September 19, 5:30 p.m. Location: Kiwanis Pavilion at Municipal Park, Exeter Road Bring your blanket and picnic and enjoy the long standing tradition of Germantown’s Pops in the Park. The performance by Germantown Symphony Orchestra features music inspired by outer space. The choirs of Germantown and Houston High Schools will also perform. No rain date.

S’mores and Snores: Family Camp Out and Outdoor Movie
Friday, October 2 Tent set up begins at 4 p.m. Fee: $40 per tent (4 person max), $10 for each additional camper Location: Farm Park, 2660 Cross Country Registration deadline: September 30 Spend a night under the stars with family and friends. Relax by the campfire and enjoy a traditional cook out dinner and s’mores. Grab a sleeping bag and pillow and enjoy a family-friendly movie outdoors. A light breakfast will be served on Saturday. Germantown Night Out
October 6, 5 to 9 p.m. Homeowners across Germantown will be turning on their front porch lights, locking their doors and stepping outside to get together with neighbors and celebrate Crime Prevention Month during Germantown Night Out. Some neighborhoods organize large gatherings but participation can be as simple as inviting nearby homeowners for conversation and light refreshments. Night Rider Family Bike Ride and Outdoor Movie
Saturday, October 10 Games and festivities begin at 5:30 p.m., ride at 7 p.m. Fee: $15, Register by September 15 to receive a T-shirt Location: Farmington Park, 2029 Cordes Come early for food, fun and games. All ages can choose their distance, up to a six-mile loop. Bring a decorated bike or tricycle. Glow-in-the-dark gear and flashing lights are encouraged. A sizeappropriate helmet is required. Germantown Police will assist with the ride. Afterwards, spread out onto the lawn with a chair or blanket and enjoy a family-friendly movie. Register online at Germantown-TN.gov/registration. Germantown residents receive one-and-a-half yards of aged, double hammered mulch with proof of residency. Public services employees will load mulch into a truck or trailer. Smaller amounts will be available in a “load your own” area. Residents must provide their own bags. One load per household is allowed. Holiday Tree Lighting
Sunday, October 25, 1 to 4 p.m. Location: Farm Park, 2660 Cross Country Come out to the annual Harvest Festival. Watch our exciting Grill Off in the Garden competition. Bring a picnic or purchase food from a food truck. Live music, pumpkin patch activities, visiting farm animals, hay rides, a hay maze, scarecrow contest, horseshoes, a kiddie pedal tractor pull competition and cooking demonstrations are the highlights of the afternoon. Friday, November 27 Outdoor festivities 5 p.m., tree lighting 5:30 p.m. Location: Municipal Park Lake, 1900 S. Germantown Road Watching the first flicker of the lights on the Holiday Tree is a long standing tradition in Germantown. Families gather in Municipal Square to sing holiday songs, toast marshmallows and enjoy the beginning of the holiday season as a community. Afterward comes the much anticipated lighting of the tree. Following the festivities, merrymakers can enjoy refreshments and visit with Santa inside City Hall. No rain date.

Germantown Holiday Parade
Tuesday, October 27, 5:30 to 8 p.m. Location: The Great Hall & Conference Center, 1900 S. Germantown Road Residents are encouraged to attend the free Neighborhood Summit presented by the Germantown Neighborhood Preservation Commission. The opening reception features appetizers and information tables set up by neighborhood associations, commissions and other organizations of interest. Mayor Mike Palazzolo will serve as keynote speaker. Recognize those who make a difference in your neighborhood by nominating them for neighborhood awards. Saturday, December 12, 2 p.m. Lining the City streets, residents watch as decorated floats, horses, school groups, clubs and booming marching bands slowly make their way along the parade route and wave to their neighbors. Be sure to stay until the end to get a glimpse of Santa aboard a Germantown Fire truck. This year in support of the U.S. Marine Reserves Toys for Tots organization, uniformed Marines and volunteers will travel along the parade route to collect new, unwrapped toys for children. The parade begins at the corner of Kimbrough Road and Farmington Boulevard, proceeds west on Farmington Boulevard to Exeter Road, turns north on Exeter Road and ends at Germantown Athletic Club. THE BIG READ GERMANTOWN
LET’S READ GERMANTOWN! The City of Germantown is proud to be a 2015 Big Read grant recipient. A program of the National Endowment for the Arts and managed by Arts Midwest, The Big Read offers grants to support innovative community reading programs designed around a single book. The Big Read in Germantown will focus on “A Wizard of Earthsea” by Ursula K. Le Guin. The Earthsea novels tell the story of the education and adventures of a young wizard named Ged. The book appeals to readers of all ages and is widely considered to be a distant ancestor of Rowling’s Harry Potter. Everyone is encouraged to join City employees, Germantown Community Library, GPAC, Germantown Community Theater and Germantown Municipal Schools students in reading the book. Many copies of “A Wizard of Earthsea” are available at Germantown Community Library. Germantown’s Big Read kicks off on October 3 with a Fantasy Faire and concludes on November 20 with a staged reading of the book. Additional events are currently being planned. Saturday, October 3, 5 to 7 p.m. Location: Germantown Community Library, 1925 Exeter Road Mayor Mike Palazzolo and area dignitaries will be on hand to officially launch The Big Read in Germantown. Open to all, this family friendly event celebrates fantasy fiction with strolling musicians, wizarding science experiments, jugglers, food trucks and more. Don’t miss an opportunity to take a selfie with Germantown’s own traveling wizard or and town crier. Some lucky Faire goers will receive a free book. Copies will also be available for check out.
Wizard Costume Contest Saturday, October 3, 6 p.m. Location: Germantown Community Library, 1925 Exeter Road Dress up as your favorite wizard for this all-ages costume contest. Refreshments will be served and awards presented. Participating wizards must arrive by 5:45 p.m. in order to register for the contest.
Edible Book Contest
Monday, October 12, 6:30 p.m. Location: Germantown Community Library, 1925 Exeter Road All ages are invited to show off their creative cakes and other edible creations during the Edible Book Contest. Create a totally edible artwork inspired by a favorite book and bring it to the library to show off. Awards will be presented in several categories, including a special category for creations based on the 2015 Big Read selection, A Wizard of Earthsea. The Parks and Recreation Department and Germantown Municipal School District are partnering to offer a comprehensive intramural program for the 2015-2016 school year. The program is available to Houston High and Houston Middle students and Riverdale students in grades 6 to 8. The Intramural Program will take place following dismissal on full school days. Advanced payment is required. FO RGEY BA R K PA R K Germantown Parks and Recreation is pleased to offer an off-leash park where citizens can spend quality time with their dogs. The park, located at 1695 Riverdale Road, offers a secured, fenced area where dogs can run, jump, play and socialize with others. Water and washing stations are available. Members use waste stations with baggies to help keep the area clean.

This course provides students with critical thinking skills, a boost in vocabulary and reading, a better understanding of grammar in a creative and upbeat environment. Young at Art – Through a variety of art mediums, children will tap into their creativity and imagination. Lego Club – Lego Club combines science, technology, engineering, math and creative fun and presents weekly challenges and activities for the Lego lover in your life. Golf – This class is designed to introduce the sport of golf. Tennis – Smashing Aces Tennis brings the lifetime sport of tennis to the schools through the USTA’s 10 and Under program. Sunday, November 22, 3 p.m. GPAC Youth Symphony Orchestra (GYSO) was created to offer opportunities for young musicians to improve upon their technique, learn basic music theory, work with an ensemble and interact with professional guest artists performing at GPAC. The GYSO Program is dedicated to the highest standards of music and is open to career-oriented students as well as those who wish to study music for the pure enjoyment, inherent benefits of and appreciation for the art form. The program is divided into four subsets: The Mozart String Ensemble for students ages 7 to 12; the Mendelssohn String Orchestra for students ages 12 to 16; the Wind Ensemble for woodwind, brass and percussion students; and the GPAC Youth Symphony Orchestra. This full orchestra consists of strings, winds, brass, percussion, harp and keyboard for advanced students ages 14 to 19.

A library card is required to check out materials from Germantown Community Library. The card is available at no charge to Germantown residents, students and staff of Germantown K-12 public and private schools, students and staff of Union University’s Germantown Campus, Memphis School of Preaching, Germantown business owners and family members, active military personnel and their families and full-time City of Germantown employees. Collierville residents with a Collierville library card in good standing can receive a free card with limited privileges. All others pay $50 for a yearly membership card.
Website and Databases
Library cardholders can go online to look up account information, renew materials, place holds and search the collections of Wolf River Library Consortium libraries. Books by Mail
Germantown Community Library offers Books by Mail, a free service for homebound seniors. The library will mail print or audio books to Germantown residents, age 60 or older, who are confined at home. The Friends of Germantown Community Library support the library through fundraising and volunteer service. Membership is $10 for the calendar year. The GRHGC has more than 16,000 reference materials in its collection. Materials are available for the United States and some European countries.
