Germantown Festival
Saturday, September 6, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, September 7, noon to 6 p.m. Location: C.O. Franklin Park, 7725 Poplar Pike One of the longest, continuously-run festivals in the region, the 43rd annual Germantown Festival provides a free family fun weekend. The community will gather for arts and crafts shopping, children’s activities, rides and games, live entertainment, tasty food, car exhibits and the Running of the Weenies. Saturday, September 6, best dressed contest, 11 a.m., race 11:30 a.m. Fee: Costume contest $10 per dog, race $35 per dog Location: Germantown Charity Horse Show Arena, 7725 Poplar Pike The Running of the Weenies is a race especially for dachshunds. Presented by the Germantown Animal Shelter, the event never fails to entertain. Pre-registration is required by Wednesday, September 3, at 3:30 p.m. No late registration will be accepted. Sixth Annual Small Fry Triathlon
Saturday, September 13 Ages 2 to 3 years, 10 a.m. Ages 4 to 6 years, 10:30 a.m. Fee: $5, includes T-shirt for those who register by August 22 Location: Farmington Park, 2029 Cordes Preschoolers run, bike and swim (run through fire truck spray) to the finish line, where everyone receives a gold medal. Saturday, September 13, 5:30 p.m. Location: Kiwanis Pavilion at Municipal Park, Exeter Road Pack a picnic and enjoy a performance by Germantown Symphony Orchestra highlighting classic American Jazz selections from ragtime and blues to the big band classics of Glenn Miller and Duke Ellington. The choirs of Germantown and Houston High Schools will perform with the orchestra. No rain date.
Community Emergency Response Team Training
Session I: September 19, 20 and 27 Session II: October 24, 25 and November 1 Location: Fire Station 4, 3031 Forest Hill Irene Road Friday, 7 to 9:30 p.m., and Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program is a positive and realistic approach to prepare citizens for emergency and disaster situations. Through training, citizens learn basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace when professional responders are not immediately available during a disaster or emergency. Pre-registration is required. Amnesty Dumpster and Recycling Day
Date: September 20, 7:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Locations: Johnson Road Park, 2950 Johnson Road and Public Services Complex, 7700 Southern Avenue Materials collected at both locations include household construction-related debris, concrete, rocks, tires without rims, lawn mowers, bikes, grills and 20-pound gas grill tanks. At the Johnson Road Park location only, up to three bankers boxes of personal documents will be collected, shredded and recycled. Computers, monitors or TVs (limit one), stereos and other electronic items will be recycled by theCyperYard.com. Microwave ovens cannot be accepted. Proof of Germantown residency is required and only homeowner-generated materials will be accepted. Amnesty Dumpster Day is sponsored by the Germantown Environmental Commission. Germantown Night Out
October 7, 5 to 9 p.m. Homeowners across Germantown will be turning on their front porch lights, locking their doors and stepping outside to get together with neighbors on Night Out. The annual event is promoted by the City of Germantown in observation of Crime Prevention Month. Some neighborhood associations organize large gatherings. However, participation can be as simple as inviting neighbors for conversation and light refreshments on a front porch, backyard or driveway. To invite Eddie Eagle, McGruff the Crime Dog, Ollie the Otter, Germantown police officers, aldermen and city officials to stop by, contact Sherrye Harris at 757-7203 or saharris@germantown-tn.gov.
Master Grill Off at the Farm Park
Sunday, October 12, noon to 5 p.m. Location: Farm Park, 2660 Cross Country Calling all backyard grillers and amateur chefs‌bring portable grills and fresh, local ingredients to the Farm Park to compete for fabulous prizes. Grilling competition categories include best burger, veggies from the garden and anything goes. Food must be ready for 1:30 p.m. judging. A public tasting opens at 2 p.m. with live music. Spectators can participate in several contests - including watermelon eating, pie eating, pea shelling and hula hooping or enter a raffle and play corn hole. Overnight Family Camp Out
Friday, October 17 Tent set up begins at 5:30 p.m. Fee: $40 per tent (4 person max), $10 for each additional camper Location: Farm Park, 2660 Cross Country Spend a night under the stars with family and friends. Enjoy a traditional cook out dinner, activities, campfire stories and s’mores. A light breakfast will be served prior to departure on Saturday. Campers supply their own tents and camping equipment. Saturday, October 18, 8 a.m. until mulch is gone Location: Public Services Complex, 7725 Southern Avenue Mulch, created from yard debris collected by the City, is being offered free to Germantown residents. Bring proof of Germantown residency and receive one-and-a-half yards of aged, double-hammered mulch. Public services employees will load mulch into the back of a truck or trailer. Smaller amounts will be available in a “load-your-own” zone. Residents must provide their own bags. A limit of one load of mulch per household is allowed. Fall Harvest Festival at the Farm
Sunday, October 26, 1 to 4 p.m. Location: Farm Park, 2660 Cross Country Enjoy a picnic at the Farm Park. Bring your own or purchase food from a food truck. Live music, pumpkin patch activities, visiting farm animals, hay rides, a hay maze, scarecrow contest judging, horseshoes, a kiddie pedal tractor pull competition and cooking demonstrations in the garden are the highlights of the afternoon. Germantown Holiday Parade
Saturday, December 13, 2 p.m. The traditional holiday parade features decorated floats, horses, youth groups, car clubs, marching bands and an appearance by Santa. Beginning at the corner of Kimbrough Road and Farmington Boulevard, the parade proceeds west on Farmington Boulevard to Exeter Road, turns north on Exeter Road and ends at Germantown Athletic Club. Games begin in December and end in March. Participants can anticipate an average of three activities per week. Teams and divisions are structured by age and will play a 10-game regular season. The Legends program provides a comprehensive recreational soccer program for boys and girls ages 4 to 19. The Club focuses intensely on creating brave creative leaders for life. The no guilt, no shame, no blame philosophy gives kids the confidence to get out of their comfort zone and create the big play in any situation. Fall practices begin in August with the season kicking off in September.

Future Legends - U6, U8 and U10 boys and girls instructional soccer program. Practices are run by Legends coaching staff, games are managed by volunteer coaches.

Germantown Croquet Club
For a modest fee, members enjoy competitive play with other adult croquet enthusiasts. Club benefits include weekly scheduled play time, use of croquet equipment, instruction and club socials. Carla Brangenberg, the City’s new Director of Tennis, has 28 years of teaching experience and has served as a high school tennis coach for over 20 years. She maintains a PTR Master Professional certification and in 2011, the Tennessee Tennis Association named her Tournament Director of the Year. Carla is a USTA certified referee and umpire for professional and college tennis and has been invited to serve as an official in the US Open. REACH RE ACH The Parks and Recreation Department and Germantown Municipal School District are partnering to offer a comprehensive enrichment and extended school day program for the 20142015 school year. The program will combine educational assistance, recreation and the REACH enrichment classes that have been a staple in the schools for years. Farm Hands Needed
Farm Park volunteers are lovingly referred to as Farm Hands. While they aren’t necessarily farmers, they work with farm related events. Supporting farmers and artisans at the Farmers’ Market, educating the community through field trips and programming are just a few ways the Hands promote sustainable living. A variety of volunteer opportunities are available for adults and service groups.

The community garden is a central feature at the Farm Park. In its third year the eighty-member BLFP Community Garden Association is busy preparing and planting for another great harvest. Scarecrow Contest
Family-friendly scarecrows are welcome to visit the Farm Park again this fall. The rules are simple so don’t miss out. The contest is open to all ages, individuals, families, groups and businesses. The GRHGC has more than 15,000 reference materials in its collection. Materials are available for the United States and some European countries. The Tennessee Genealogical Society is also located in the Center. Information about the Society is available at tngs.org.
