Arbor Day Dogwood Tree Give-Away

Friday, March 4, 9 to 11 a.m. Location: Germantown Crossing shopping center Farmington Boulevard at Germantown Road Dogwood seedlings are available to residents who show proof of residency with a utility bill or valid driver license. All seedlings are Tennessee grown and are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Discount coupons for the Farm Park Fruit Tree Sale are available for the first 100 customers. The Germantown Tree Board, Beautification and Parks and Recreation Commissions present the event. The rain date is March 5. Farm Park Fruit Tree Sale

Friday, March 4, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Location: Bobby Lanier Farm Park, 2660 Cross Country Drive The Fruit Tree Sale is part of Germantown’s Arbor Day celebration and offers a great variety of hardy, disease-resistant fruit trees that produce well in our region. Prices range from $15 blackberries to $60 4-in-1 peach trees, with prices and varieties between. Other favorites include apple, pear, muscadine grape, plum, fig, apricot and persimmon. Farm Park staff and local Master Gardeners offer buyers training in the selection, planting, care and harvest. Rain date is March 5. A price list will be available online at theFarmPark.org. Friday, March 18, games at 7:15 p.m., egg hunts at 8 p.m. Age groups: 9 to 10 years and 11 to 12 years Location: Cameron Brown Park, 8628 Farmington Boulevard When the sun has set and the moon shines bright join us for an egg hunt in the night. Eggs are filled with candy and prizes awarded for both hunts. Bring along a flashlight and bag to collect goodies. Concessions are available for purchase. Rain date is Tuesday, March 22.

Free Mulch for Germantown Residents

Saturday, March 19, 8 a.m. Location: Public Services Complex, 7700 Southern Avenue Your debris has been broken down into mulch and is being offered free to Germantown residents. Bring proof of residency and receive one-and-a-half cubic yards of aged, double-hammered mulch. Public services employees will load mulch into a truck or trailer. Smaller amounts will be available in a “load-your-own” zone. Residents must provide their own bags. Limit of one load of mulch per household, available until supplies are gone. Easter Eggstravaganza

Saturday, March 19, games and activities begin at 10 a.m. Egg hunts: Up to 2 years, 10:30 a.m. 3 to 40, 11 a.m., 5 to 6, 11:30 a.m., 7 to 8, noon Location: Cameron Brown Park, 8628 Farmington Boulevard Hop on over and have some fun, look for eggs each and every one. Little ones enjoy a free petting zoo, moon bounces and age-divided egg hunts with prizes. Meet the Easter Bunny and find candy-filled eggs. Don’t forget a basket and your camera. Concessions are available for purchase. Rain date is Tuesday, March 22.

Community Emergency Response Training

Friday, April 8, 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays, April 9 and 16, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Location: Firehouse 4, 3031 Forrest Hill-Irene Road Following a major disaster, first responders who provide fire and medical services will not be able to meet demand for services. Residents may have to rely on each other for help in order to meet their immediate needs. CERT is the answer. Citizens will learn about what to expect following a major disaster in terms of immediate services and how to prepare. CERT trains residents in life saving skills with emphasis on decision making, rescuer safety and doing the greatest good for the greatest number. The course teaches how to organize teams as an extension of first responder services. Teams can then offer immediate help to victims until professional services arrive. Amnesty Dumpster and Recycle Day

Saturday, April 16, 7:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Location: Public Services Complex, 7700 Southern Avenue and Johnson Road Park, 2950 Johnson Road Materials collected at both locations include: household construction-related debris, concrete, rocks, tires without rims, lawn mowers, bikes, grills and 20-pound gas grill tanks. At the Johnson Road Park location only, up to three large paper bags of personal documents will collect to be shredded and recycled by Vital Records Control. Computers, monitors or TVs (limit one), stereos and other electronic items will be collected for recycling. Microwave ovens cannot be accepted. Proof of Germantown residency is required. Farm Park Art & Talent Contest

Smashing Aces Tennis Program

The program covers the basic skills of forehand, backhand and the serve, as well as basic strategy and match play while using adapted equipment such as smaller racquets and low compression tennis balls. Junior Legends Recreational Soccer Program The Legends program provides a comprehensive recreational soccer program for boys and girls ages 4 to 19. The Club focuses on creating brave creative leaders for life. The no guilt, no shame, no blame philosophy gives kids the confidence to get out of their comfort zone and create the big play in any situation. Spring practices begin in late February, with the season kicking off in March. Tennis

Smashing Aces Tennis, LLC works with Germantown Parks and Recreation to offer all types of tennis programs. There is something for everyone including open classes and clinics, USTA Adult leagues, recreation leagues, junior clinics, social mixers/ tournaments as well as private, semi private and team lessons. All classes, clinics and lessons are taught at the Germantown Municipal Courts, 1910 South Germantown Road. USTA Leagues play at Germantown Municipal or C.O. Franklin courts. Carla Brangenberg is the Director of Tennis for Smashing Aces Tennis/Germantown Parks and Recreation and has 28 years of teaching experience and has served as a high school tennis coach for over 20 years. She maintains a PTR Master Professional certification and in 2011 the Tennessee Tennis Association named her Tournament Director of the Year. Carla is a USTA certified referee and umpire for professional and college tennis and served as an official in the US Open in 2014 and 2015.

REACH AFTER SCHOOL CARE RE ACH (Recreation, Enrichment, Art, Community and Health) REACH offers healthy choices for expanding creativity, learning new skills and having fun with friends. Structured to be beneficial for students and convenient for parents, the program challenges students to REACH for something more.

Before/After School Care

REACH combines educational assistance, recreation and enrichment activities on all full days of school adhering to the Germantown Municipal School District calendar. Advanced payment is required. Monthly payments must be received on or before the first of every month. Daily payments must be received by the Friday, the week prior to the child attending REACH. Houston Levee Summer Camp

FARM PARK

C’MON OUT TO THE FARM PARK! Germantown’s Bobby Lanier Farm Park is a 10-acre education and demonstration center for sustainable living through agriculture and stewardship.

Location

Public access begins at 2660 Cross Country Drive. Turn east on Stout Road from Germantown Road. Public parking is available at the Cloyes Soccer Fields. Overflow parking is available behind the Fire Station on Stout and adjacent to Germantown Elementary School.

Park Hours

The Farm Park is open to pedestrians from dawn to dusk unless reserved for a special event or during inclement weather. Farm Park gardens, barns, special amenities and restrooms are accessible during the morning hours from mid-March to November when staff is on-site and/or when programs, tours and field trips are scheduled.

Hay Barn Pavillion

A center piece to the 10-acre working farm, the new Hay Barn Pavilion is an ideal event setting suitable for business meetings, retreats, training sessions, working lunches, weddings, receptions, banquets, social gatherings and holiday parties. The new multipurpose indoor facility includes a beautiful reclaimed wood interior, dimmable lighting, full catering kitchen, restrooms, sliding carriage doors that open up to beautiful views of the farm, banquet tables and vintage chairs for up to 100, six rustic custommade wood farm tables for serving and is outfitted with Wi-Fi for audio visual needs. Volunteers Needed

Volunteers, known as Farm Hands, lead programs, promote activities and events and serve on the advisory council. A variety of volunteer opportunities are available for adults, teens and service groups. Additional information is available online at theFarmPark.org.

FARM PARK Living Landscape Design Lab Workshops

Join the environmental and native plant professionals from Strawberry Plains Audubon Center as they present a more efficient and responsible way to build and manage your yard. Gleaning from a diverse palette of native plants, students will be able to create a whole new landscape or enhance an existing one. Learn the basic requirements of birds, butterflies and other pollinators, as well as best plant location for all-year garden interest. Night Owls Nature Walk and Scavenger Hunt

Friday, March 18, 7 to 9:15 p.m. Location: Farm Park, 2660 Cross Country Drive Discover mysterious nocturnal wildlife wonders on this nature talk and walk lead by a park ranger. Search for owls, deer, bats and other night-time dwellers in the heart of the Farm Park. In addition to the wildlife, leaders will teach participants how to use their night vision and other senses to navigate in the night. A bonfire and marshmallow roast will end the evening. Children not on the household membership are charged $5 per hour and $2.50 per hour for any additional children. No reservations are necessary. Annual waiver required.

After the concert, there will be a “petting zoo” of instruments where children will have an opportunity to look, hear and play different instruments up close.

Saturday, March 12, 11 a.m. Ages: All The animals are ready for spring, but what have they been doing all winter? Learn the variety of ways animals deal with the cold winter weather as Mr. Bob presents locals like the nine-banded armadillo, virginia possum, three-toed amphiuma, kingsnake and more.

Family Tunes and Tales with Memphis Symphony Orchestra Saturdays, February 13 and March 5, 11 a.m. Ages: All Join the musical families of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra as they present a story set to music. Respectively featured at each event will be Mustache Baby presented by the Brass Quintet and Giraffe’s Can’t Dance with the Woodwind Quintet.

Tommy Terrific’s Wacky Magic Saturday, February 6, 11 a.m. Ages: All For Black History Month, Tommy Terrific presents an educational magic show about famous “Black Cowboys of the Old West.” The kids will learn about Bill Pickett who invented bulldogging as Tommy does a magic trick with a steer’s skull. They will learn about Nat Love, an expert roper as Tommy does a rope magic trick. The kids will also learn about Mary Fields, who delivered mail out West, as Tommy does a magic trick from a mail package. These are just a few of the many magic tricks and Black Americans of the Old West featured in this fun, educational magic show.

Tolkien Birthday Party Sunday, January 3, 2 to 5:30 p.m. Ages: 13 to 18 years Celebrate J.R.R. Tolkien’s birthday with a toast to the creator of Middle-earth. Teen participants will be able to keep their hands warm with refreshments of warmed “Miruvor” and their bellies full with “Lembas Bread” while watching the first Hobbit film.

After School Lounge Mondays and Tuesdays, 3 to 6 p.m., January 4 to April 26 Ages: 13 to 18 years Teens are invited to come to the library after school for studying and a chance to unwind. Bring your own snacks and drinks and hang out in the Youth Services programming room with fellow teens. Paid tutoring is not allowed in the room, but teen study groups and volunteer tutors are welcome. There will be no events on Mondays, January 18 and 25, February 15, March 21, April 4 and Tuesday, March 23.

Teen Time: Study-Us Sunday, January 31, 2 to 5:30 p.m. Ages: 13 to 18 years Teens are invited to the first in a series of Teen Time programs, Study-Us (a play on the word “studious”), to learn new skills, do homework and other school assignments, prepare for college, work on resumes and more. Library staff will be on hand for research help and refreshments will be provided to keep energy high. Required pre-registration begins January 24.

Google Hangout: Harry Potter Book Night Thursday, February 4, 5 to 8 p.m. Ages: 13 to 18 years Teens are invited to participate in Harry Potter Book Night from the comfort of their own homes by joining the library’s first ever Teen Google Hangout. Ask questions, post comments, participate in a lively discussion and celebrate all things Harry Potter. Certificates will be awarded for best costume, most creative spell and most knowledgeable. Required preregistration begins January 28.

Teen Time: Fiber Arts and Crafts Sunday, February 28, 2 to 5:30 p.m. Ages: 13 to 18 years Fiber Arts and Crafts offers teens the chance to learn how to knit, crochet or cross-stitch with a librarian… but that’s not all. Teens can spend the afternoon reading a favorite book, talking with friends, playing board games and more as the library opens its programming room for teens only on February 28. Refreshments will be provided by the library. Required preregistration begins February 21.

Teen Tech Week Sunday, March 6, 2 to 5 p.m. and Wednesday, March 9, 5 to 8 p.m. Ages: 13 to 18 years Celebrate Teen Tech Week at the Germantown Community Library. On Sunday, the library will host drone races and a robot dance-off and on Wednesday there will be toothbrush robot races and obstacle courses for robots to navigate. Required preregistration begins February 28.

Teens will learn to write their names in Elvish, make crafts and participate in trivia games. Required pre-registration begins Sunday, March 13.

Teen Time: Game Tournament Sunday, April 24, 2 to 5:30 p.m. Ages: 13 to 18 years Test your board and video gaming skills against other teens at the first Germantown Teen Game Tournament. Bring your smart device to participate in the Jackbox Party Box games on the library’s PS4 and brush up on trivia and math skills for Trivial Pursuit and Monopoly. GERMANTOWN REGIONAL HISTORY AND GENEALOGY CENTER The Germantown Regional History and Genealogy Center, at 7779 Poplar Pike, serves as a repository and research center for materials related to history and genealogy. The GRHGC has more than 16,000 reference materials in its collection. Materials are available for the United States and some European countries. The Tennessee Genealogical Society is also located in the Center. Information about the Society is available at tngs.org.
