FYI
INFORMATION FOR LIVING THE GOOD LIFE IN GERMANTOWN
SUMMER 2013
LETTER FROM THE MAYOR
GERMANTOWN DESIGNATED PARTNER IN PREVENTION First US city to demonstrate comprehensive sexual abuse prevention It’s a pleasure for the City of Germantown to offer you a fresh version of our FYI publication, the three-times-a-year compilation of all the events, activities and programs produced and presented by city departments and staff. This new magazine format is another of the cost saving measures undertaken by city government, making the best use of your tax dollars while continuing to deliver quality services. Previously, FYI was printed on several sheets of paper stock, then folded and mailed to every address in Germantown. This edition is a shift toward mostly digital delivery. Elsewhere in these pages, you’ll find instructions on how to subscribe for electronic delivery to your email address. Or you can find FYI on the city’s website, www.germantown-tn.gov . If you really prefer to find all the latest community information on paper, we’re printing a supply of copies for people to pick up at City Hall, Community Library, Athletic Club or Performing Arts Centre (or select specific pages from the website source to print at home). In addition to cost effectiveness, the size flexibility of the new FYI allows city officials to broaden the scope of information we think interesting, helpful and important to living in Germantown. From time to time, we’ll report on initiatives that improve the “quality of place” or explain how city government functions. Here’s an example of an effort to protect our children. More than 270 city employees who work with or around children have been trained in Stewards of Children, the only
evidence-based child sexual abuse prevention training available. It was developed by Darkness to Light, a nationally-recognized nonprofit child sexual abuse prevention organization. The city collaborated with the Memphis Child Advocacy Center to provide the training to our employees. The three-hour curriculum with discussion focuses on all facets of child sexual abuse: the problems and prevalence, risks of placing children in environments lacking appropriate policies, ways to improve the availability of safe spaces for youngsters, guidance of parents on how to children about the issue, and ways to recognize and react to signs of abuse. Going beyond the training, city legal counsel worked with the CAC to audit city policies to ensure that all municipal properties and programs have a thorough, enforced child protection policy in place. Key components discourage circumstances in which only one adult and one child are present, background check requirements and more specific needs of certain departments. By its attention to prevention measures, the City of Germantown was the first municipality in the nation to become a “partner in prevention” with Darkness to Light.
Mayor Sharon Goldsworthy
