BASKETBALL
Although handi cappe d b y a lack of h eight and expe rience th e Golden D emon Basketeers comp l ete d a very succ ess ful ba ske tball seaso n . Th e t ea m was guided by a n ew and ex ceptionally capable coach , W D Slocum , a g raduat e from Colorado Co ll ege . In recommending Mr. Sl o cum the pr es id ent of C. C. inform ed Mr . Beers that our n ew coach was one of th e best basketball play ers ev er to graduate from C. C. and also that h e maintain ed a very high scholastic r eco rd while there
The t ea m: Francis Leeper, captain, pla ye d steady but aggressive ball as center of the t ea m Sinc e Fran cis maintain ed a seven - point game av erage , h e was one of the t ea m ' s b est scoring thr ea ts . Francis was five or six inch es shorter th a n any o th er cent er in the conference , but was probably the b es t r ebound man in the conference. Franny has lette r ed two years in bask et ball.
Gl enn ( R ed ) Adams , a fiery senior forward , was the outstanding shot of the conference; his ama z in g corner shots were feared by all opposing t ea ms , but to n o avail. Glenn end ed th e seaso n with an eig ht -po int game averag e.
Pla yi n g opposite to Glenn on the other forward post was diminutiv e Jack " Scooter " Goudge. Jack was th e smallest player in the suburban leagu e, but was among the top scorers of the loop Jack was good for at l eas t six points a game . B eca us e Jack was so aggressive and speedy h e was alwa ys able to hold hi s ow n aga inst anyone twice his size.
In Dean Pulv er and Bill Foster Mr. Slocum found two stellar junior guards. Bill played eve r y game on an equal basis ; Golden could alwa ys rely on Bill to carry th e m ai l if the other b oys happ e ned to hav e a bad night. Bill was the b est b a ll handl er on the D e mon team and was also an exce ll e nt def e nsiv e play er. Although Bill did not score too h eavil y h e could and should be cr edited for many assets . W a tch for Bill next year.
D ea n was the tall es t player on th e Dem o ns ' starting lin eup , but that isn ' t sayi ng much - h e was only 5' l 0 11 • D ean was very good at cl ea ring th e backboard and was a very r eliabl e pla ye r o n def ens e. Lik e Bill , D ean was not a h eavy scorer , but in all other departm ents of the game he stood out. Here 's a n ot h er b oy you can watch for n ext yea r.
Oth er m emb ers of the squad were Ed Corf man , a sophomore: Marvin Van Winkle , a junior. and captain-elect ; Danny Luddington , a sophomore ; Stan D effe nbaugh , a juni o r ; Harland Stuart , a senior , and Eugene Lewis , a senior.

WRESTLING
The 1943 wrestling season was a successful one for th e m emb ers of the Go ld e n High School team. The se ason sta rt ed rath e r slowly but was pepped up b y Coac h Brecheisen and Captain Harold West. The first match was h eld with Wheatridge ; th e score was 35-8 in our team ' s favor. The next two match es w e re with Louisville and w e re ove rwh elmjng successes for o ur team Wheatridg e and Littl eton both forfeited their coming matches after the first thr ee of th e season.
Harold W es t was the b est possibl e choic e for ca ptain that the boys last yea r co uld hav e mad e, and h e well proved his worth wh en we were without a coach Betw een Harold and Kenny Brech eis en th e r es ponsibiliti es of a wrestling team were adeq u ate l y taken ca r e of. National Honor Society
Probably the highest honor any high school student can receive is election to the National Honor Society This designation indicates unusual attainments in the fields of scholarship , leadership , character , and service Students are el ected to membership b y vote of the faculty. We should g ladly manif est our pride in the outstanding stud ents who have this year fulfilled all the requirements necessary for membership in this honorary organization As the name implies , it is certainly a national honor to becom e a member of this society and any student who is voted into the organization can proudly consider himself a s ucc essful student in his high schoo l career.

Vocal Music
GLE E CLUBS: Twice eac h week the fellows and gals of Golden High who find a common liking for music gather respectively in the Boys ' Glee Club and the Girls ' Glee Club to pool their talents.
Their capable vocal lea der , Mr. Earle Johnson , l ea ds them in the songs of the day and produces such inspiring and magnific ent works as Handel's " Halleluja Chorus. " We are always appreciative of th e delightful manner in which they render selectio ns.
SENIOR M EL LO-D EARS Early in Sept ember , 1942 , six young ladi es interested in music met together quit e by accident. Mr. Johnson , Golden's vocal gen ius , noticed that they were all seniors. His creative mind went to work , and there was or igin iat ed the Senior Mello-dears.
The group sang first for the Golden Kiwanis , where their six bright red dresses and those lacy collars were the subject of so much conversation that at times we wondered if it were the singing or the dresses which excelled .
Since that d ebut th e girls have mad e more than twenty-five appearances . At Chr istmas time Betty Fowler took a trip to Texas Several weeks later Gold e n was surpris ed to h ear that Betty was married. Thus the sextette became a quint ette
The girls ' favorite of all the songs th ey sang was this group: " Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Pickled Peppers ," " Play , Fiddle , Play ," " and " Kiss Me Again ."
