Winter Bird Hike (Ages 15+)
Grab your binoculars and coat; we are headed outside to look for birds this winter! Join PEC staff as we hike the forest trails looking for winter residents such as golden and ruby-crowned kinglets, yellow-bellied sapsuckers and brown creepers. We will also stop at the pond and along the lakeshore to look for waterfowl that spend the season in the Piedmont. We invite beginners as well as experienced birders to participate. The Clinic: Youth Basketball Coaching (Ages 15+)
Every coach wants their team to achieve its full potential. Discover how to create a championship culture and gain the tools needed to maximize your practice time and make your team unstoppable! Sessions will be led by Joel Battle, a two-time Conference Coach of the Year. He has successfully guided players to play college and professional basketball. Oak Hollow Annual Bass Tournament (Ages 16+)
Our annual tournament has returned! Participants will compete to catch five of the biggest largemouth bass for prize money. Payback is 100 percent of the entry fees. Bud Kivett Memorial City Golf Championship (Ages 16+)
Celebrating its 46th anniversary this year, this is a 36-hole, stroke play event open to the first 216 amateur golfers who enter. Play will take place over the beautiful Oak Hollow and Blair Park Golf Courses. Championship Flight winner will receive a beautiful trophy. Pro Shop gift certificates will be awarded to the top finishers in each flight. Oak Hollow Open (Ages 16+)
Celebrating its 34th year, entries in this tournament are open to the first 100 teams of amateur golfers ages 16 and older. Seniors, ages 55 and older, will play from the white tees. This tournament also features a Par 3 Challenge with the closest to the pin on all par threes both days. The entry does not include green fee or cart fee. Application and entry fee must arrive by noon on May 27. Over $12,500 in prizes and gift certificates will be awarded! Community Garden @ Oakview (Ages 16+)
Community gardens provide the opportunity for people to produce healthy food options and lead healthier lives. Current plot holders may renew their plots for 2022 starting Feb. 15. During this time, a limited number of new plots will also be available for those not already renting a current plot in the existing garden. New plots will be reserved only for new plot holders for the entire year. Any remaining plots will be open to the public beginning March 2. For additional information, please call 336.883.3508. Fall Oak Hollow Open: Ryder Cup Edition (Ages 16+)
Celebrating its 11th year, this is a two-person, captain's choice, 36-hole event that will be flighted after the first round. Open to the first 60 teams, the "shotgun start" for both days' rounds gives golfers a chance to get a round in before watching football games in the afternoon! Seniors, ages 55 and older, will play from the white tees. This event will also include a Par 3 Challenge both days. Please note that the entry fee will go towards gift certificates and prizes and does not include green fee or cart fee. Over $6,000 in prizes and gift certificates will be awarded! e-Walks (Ages 18+)
This time, the "e" stands for ecology! Staff will lead a 75minute walk on the trails to observe the nature of winter and wildlife. We will walk from winter into spring and witness the natural world unfolding before us. During each walk, a different ecological concept will be introduced to the participants, and the staff naturalist will relate that concept to the observations the group has made. Topics include biodiversity, interrelationships, limiting factors, symbiosis, succession, biorhythms and much more. Participants should dress for the weather and bring their own binoculars and magnifying lens; PEC can provide these tools for those who don't have them. Birds, Boats, and Seafood: A Winter Weekend on North Carolina's Outer Banks (Ages 18+)
Few areas along the coast support more wintering waterfowl and wading birds than the Outer Banks of North Carolina. In January and early February, dozens of fascinating species of birds spend the winter in the marshes and ponds of Pea and Bodie Islands, part of the National Wildlife Refuge system, where they are easily observed and enjoyed. This trip explores these areas for wildlife and includes a stop at Lake Mattamuskeet. An optional kayak paddle on a sheltered creek rounds out an adventuresome weekend of wildlife and exploration. Participants and staff will stay at the Comfort Inn in Kill Devil Hills, and meals are provided except for evening dinners. Transportation, guides, boats and all paddling and optical equipment are provided. Sleeping Trees (Ages 18+)
Leaf shape is not the only way to tell what species of tree you are looking at! Join PEC staff this winter as we demystify the sleeping trees of the Piedmont using their bark, buds and leaf scars as clues. You will take home a Winter Tree Finder book and the "know how" to identify trees in your backyard. This class will be held outdoors, so please bundle up and wear comfortable shoes. Community gardens provide opportunities for people from all backgrounds to work side by side towards improving food security, increasing fruit and vegetable intake and leading healthier lives. Participants will donate 10 percent of their harvests to local food organizations. Dog Obedience Class (Ages 18+)
Qualified instructor will teach owners and dogs basic commands and social skills. Dogs must be a least eight weeks old. Participants must bring the pet's shot records, a six-foot, non-retractable leash, a choke collar and treats. It's a lovely time of year to be out on the water and the lake will be stocked! This tournament will be a trolling motor tournament with a five-fish limit and 100 percent pay out.
