ZIKA Virus Poses Threat to Public
The World Health Organization has declared the ZIKA virus a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. No vaccine exists to prevent the ZIKA virus, which is spread by mosquito bites, but there are things we can do to protect our community and ourselves. One of the simplest and most effective ways of preventing the virus is the “TOSS and TIP.” TOSS away old containers or other items where water can collect, including old flower pots. TIP outdoor furniture to avoid standing water on cushions. Also, avoid interaction with mosquitoes by staying indoors from dusk to dawn when mosquitoes are most active. If you must be outside, protect your skin with repellant and wear appropriate clothing. Light colors are least attractive to mosquitoes. For more information about ZIKA virus, go to www.cdc.gov.
