SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
From the Mayor Welcome to Lansing Living, your resource on things to do in Lansing! This citywide publication combines the Lansing Parks and Recreation Activities Guide, the Capital Area Recycling and Trash (CART) Greensheet and other important information. In this Winter/Spring 2020 issue, you will find a diverse list of activities throughout Lansing for people of all ages, including activities offered by the City of Lansing Parks and Recreation Department (January through May) and others. This publication serves as your guide for all of the exciting things happening in Lansing including the State of the City 2020, Recycle Rama, Participatory Budget Nights, swim classes for youth, water exercise classes for adults, dance classes, exercise programs, martial arts classes, sports leagues and more.
If you’re looking to learn a new hobby or get fit after the holidays, we have a class or program to meet your needs. There is always something fun to do in Lansing and this issue proves just that. If there is anything you would like to see featured in future issues of Lansing Living, please visit lansingmi.gov/LLInfo and tell us all about it! Be on the lookout for the next issue of Lansing Living hitting your mailbox in March 2020! Try something new and enjoy one of the many programs offered by the City of Lansing Parks and Recreation Department or our many partners offering activities throughout the City this year. It’s an honor to serve as your Mayor of Lansing and I thank you for your continued support in moving our great City forward.
Andy Schor, Mayor

SIMPLE RECYCLING
CLOTHING AND TEXTILES ARE 100 PERCENT RECYCLABLE, BUT MOST END UP IN LANDFILLS!
The City of Lansing works with Simple Recycling, a company that collects usable clothing, shoes, textiles and household goods for reuse and recycling. Lansing residents can set these materials out at the curb on their normal City recycling day. Simple Recycling provides special bags and tags to residents that must be used to set out these items. To request bags, contact Simple Recycling at (866) 835-5068 or info@simplerecycling.com.
Please remember this is a separate collection from the Lansing green recycling carts. Please do not put clothing and textiles inside recycling carts.
HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE DISPOSAL The Ingham County Health Department operates a Household Hazardous Waste Collection for materials such as gasoline, flammables, oil-based paint, pesticides and other materials. COLLECTIONS ARE MAY-SEPTEMBER ON TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS FROM 2-6 P.M.
The site is located at 5303 S. Cedar St., east side of the Health Department (follow the signs to the facility). Call (517) 887-4312 for more information.
RECYCLE COACH
A new and improved waste collection reminder service now available! Sign up for Recycle Coach by downloading the app on your mobile device. For more information on Recycle Coach, please visit lansingmi.gov/CART.

Mayor schor’s State of the City 2020
By: Valerie Walters, City of Lansing Communications Manager In February 2019, Lansing Mayor Andy Schor held his 2nd State of the City (SOTC) Address at Riverwalk Theatre where he laid out his vision to continue to move Lansing forward. Mayor Schor began by recounting nearly a billion dollars of new private investment in the City of Lansing that was announced in 2018. Some of the projects include a $41.5-million investment to build a downtown Meijer grocery store, hotel and apartment building, a $96-million investment by Loc Performance, a $450-million investment to build McLaren’s new campus and hospital, among many others. In an effort to continue to develop critical pieces of property in Lansing, Mayor Schor also announced the launch of Build Lansing. Build Lansing is a program that will ultimately consist of requests for
proposals for City-owned spaces. Schor spoke about Lansing’s new global partnerships with eBay on their Retail Revival Program, as well as Google on their Grow with Google initiative. Both programs support Lansing’s small business and help propel them to the next level. In his first Executive Order, Schor committed to neighborhoods by establishing the Department of Neighborhood and Citizen Engagement. At SOTC, Schor spoke about the important work the department completed in the last year including the success of the inaugural Citizens Academy program, the launch of a volunteer network Serve Lansing, a number of public engagement meetings hosted, as well as the start of a deep dive into data driven decision making. Mayor Schor detailed the new mayoral commissions created including: The Arts and Culture Commission, Diversity Commission, the Inter-Faith Advisory Council and the Veterans Commission. Each
STATE OF THE CITY 2020 WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 5TH
group has been hard at work to make helpful recommendations in their areas of expertise for the Mayor’s consideration. To end the big event, Mayor Schor announced a new branding campaign and vision for Lansing focusing on three main areas of action. More information about this vision can be found at lansingforward.com. Lansing’s time is now and Mayor Schor will host his 3rd State of the City Address on February 5th, 2019.
Lansing Vision 2030 Campaign Areas of Action 1. Diversify Lansing livability to meet residents’ changing housing needs, providing a variety of rentals, condominiums, historic housing and larger homes. 2. Focus on City design to improve the City’s public spaces - from roads to art - to ensure a welcoming environment. 3. Leverage Lansing’s existing diversity and employment opportunities to represent our City as an ideal place to live and thrive. lansingmi.gov | JANUARY-MAY 2020 | 32

keeping the roads safe this winter
By: Sydney Chu & Brianna Olszewski Winter is here and when the snow falls the Lansing Public Service Department is responsible for plowing and salting City streets and sidewalks. City trucks travel nearly 2,400 miles every time all City streets are plowed. When snowfall exceeds two inches on State trunklines and major streets, City crews will start plowing 139 miles of designated City streets. When snow depth on local streets exceeds 4 inches, crews will start plowing the local streets as soon as the State trunklines and major streets are completed. Property owners are responsible for clearing sidewalks within 24 hours after the end of a snow event to help keep neighborhoods safe and passable for pedestrians. A violation notice may be left at property if the sidewalk is not cleared within 24 hours. The notice is a reminder that will allow for an additional 24 hours to clear snow and ice. If you do not clear your sidewalk it may result in the City clearing it at the owner’s expense (minimum $149).
If you feel that your street is being missed by the snowplow, please call the Public Service Department at (517) 483-4455 or (517) 4834161. The City does not salt neighborhood streets with the exception of previously identified hills and intersections.
Things to watch for • Do not follow salt trucks too closely. Remember, they are throwing rock salt from the bottom of their vehicle and are often driving slower than the speed limit. • If there is damage done to your mailbox due to City snow removal, please call and report it to the Public Service Department Operations
and Maintenance Division at (517) 483-4161. The City is not responsible for previously damaged mailboxes. Weather is hard to predict, especially when it comes to foreseeing exactly how conditions will shape up. Decisions based on when to start or stop any activity is made depending upon weather conditions, surface temperatures, time of day, etc. Information from the National Weather Service and a private weather forecasting service are utilized to help make informed decisions. With the help of Lansing residents and businesses, the Lansing Public Service Department can better keep the streets and sidewalks safe during the winter.
Stay informed on salt and snow removal activity by signing up for Lansing Alert updates at lansingmi.gov/LansingAlert To view the snowplow route map, you can visit lansingmi.gov/SnowRemoval
Lansing residents have several responsibilities when it snows • It is an occupant’s job to remove the snow and ice from the sidewalks outside of their home or business within 24 hours after the snowfall. • Spread salt, ashes, sawdust or sand on the sidewalks within 24 hours of ice forming. • Do not push or pile snow or ice into the street or the shoulder of roads. • Do not pile snow or ice in the public right of way. It cannot obstruct the driver’s view or impair vehicle or pedestrian traffic. • If snow removal is underway, do not park on the streets (day or night). • Remember to be a good neighbor. If you have neighbors who are not physically able to clear their own sidewalks, consider helping them out. The process of clearing the roads and sidewalks is most efficient when the above rules are followed. Every snowfall is different and with each snowfall comes potential hazards to watch out for. lansingmi.gov | JANUARY-MAY 2020 | 33

What is the Census?
Is the Census Safe?
Article I, Section 2 of the United States Constitution requires that the census is conducted to count all people in the United States every 10 years. The US Census is the largest peacetime operation that the United States undertakes. It takes all of us to ensure a complete count is taken.
The Census Bureau cannot release any identifiable information about individuals, households, or businesses to law enforcement agencies. The law states that the information collected may only be used for statistical purposes and no other purpose. All Census Bureau staff take a lifetime oath to protect your personal information and any
Who is counted in the census? All persons living in the United States on April 1, 2020. Persons are counted in the census at the place of residence where they live/sleep most of the year. Every household will receive an invitation to fill out the 2020 Census. One person from the house will fill out the census and include everyone living at that address, including all relatives and non-relatives. You will receive an initial invitation to complete the census in March and several reminders. Every household will have the option to self-respond in one of three ways 1) Online 2) Telephone or 3) Paper Questionnaire. The Census will be available in English and 12 other languages. Video and
Under current funding figures, Michigan would lose $1,800 of federal funds per year for every person not counted! Take the Census Online, via Telephone or by Paper Questionnaire.
violation comes with a penalty of up to $250,000 and/or up to 5 years in prison.
Why does it matter? The Census matters to each of us in Lansing. The Census is used to determine the allocation of federal resources and the country’s 435 Congressional seats. More than 15 Billion federal and state program dollars are distributed in Michigan communities annually based on census data and 42% of our state budget comes from federal funds. These resources fund many programs that people in Lansing depend on like Medicare/Medicaid, Health Centers, SNAP benefits, school lunch programs, education funding, infrastructure like roads, bridges and highways, housing funding and children’s programs such as child care/SCHIP and foster care. It’s not just funding that is impacted by the census. Locally, both government and businesses use census data to determine their investments. It impacts infrastructure and transportation planning, emergency preparedness and disaster planning, medical planning and public health tracking, education planning, business development and market expansion, zoning and permitting processes, workforce development and more.

DESCRIPTIONS SWIM STARTERS
SWIM BASICS
Accompanied by a parent, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidencebuilding experiences, while parents learn about water safety, drowning prevention, and the importance of supervision.
A / WATER DISCOVERY
B / WATER EXPLORATION
Parents accompany children in stage A, which introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment through exploration and encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water.
In stage B, parents work with their children to explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and aquatic skills.
Students learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by learning two benchmark skills:
1 / WATER ACCLIMATION
2 / WATER MOVEMENT
3 / WATER STAMINA
Students develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water in stage 1. This stage lays the foundation that allows for a student’s future progress in swimming.
In stage 2, students focus on body position and control, directional change, and forward movement in the water while also continuing to practice how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water.
In stage 3, students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in previous stages in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action.
4 / STROKE INTRODUCTION
5 / STROKE DEVELOPMENT
6 / STROKE MECHANICS
Students in stage 4 develop stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and learn the breaststroke kick and butterfly kick. Water safety is reinforced through treading water and elementary backstroke.
Students in stage 5 work on stroke technique and learn all major competitive strokes. The emphasis on water safety continues through treading water and sidestroke.
In stage 6, students refine stroke technique on all major competitive strokes, learn about competitive swimming, and discover how to incorporate swimming into a healthy lifestyle.
• Swim, float, swim— sequencing front glide, roll, back float, roll, front glide, and exit • Jump, push, turn, grab
SWIM STROKES
Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being, and foster a lifetime of physical activity.
