Firstly, THANK YOU to all our amazing Volunteers and all your efforts put into sorting, pricing, organizing, moving and packaging all the donated items we accepted for our sales, as well as for your time put in before, during and after the sales! Secondly, THANK YOU to all who donated to our cause! For all the “treasures”, books, puzzles, bakery and condiments for the bake sale & brat fry! New this year was the Gift Shop Sale Table, which sold items created by our crafty ladies and weavers totaling $101.75. Gift shop members also were allowed to sell their own items at reduced prices. This was a great addition to our annual sale. Our Brat Fry went better than expected. We sold out of all our food by 12:30pm. Although this is a good thing, our apologies to those who were unable to enjoy lunch due to the popularity of the brat fry and all those hungry people! However, we hope you were able to enjoy some delicious baked goods from the bake sale! So, how did we do? We did great this year. Between all sales, we made $392 more than last year, total profit of $1339.28. As always, the profits from our fundraising events are used for updates to the Senior Center, as well as programming and special events for our Center members! Again, this would not be possible without our selfless volunteers!! Thank you for your dedication to the Center and for your part in making our Center a wonderful place for our senior community. There were nearly 30 volunteers! We could NOT do this without you! It must be said, our volunteers are truly priceless and appreciated more than we can express! We THANK YOU for making this year’s Treasure Sale another success!!

Enjoy “50 Reasons to get out of bed in the morning”, a fun little book created by the staff of Silver Lake College in the 1980’s. Travel...A trip doesn’t necessarily mean a long distance journey. Maybe you would prefer to take a short trip. Look around and check out the possibilities. Our county has much to offer, and a trip in your own home area can be very enlightening. Perhaps you want to explore the state. Wherever your trip may lead, plan ahead; study about it , send for brochures, talk to a travel agent, check the library...you’ll enjoy what you are seeing even more if you really spend time beforehand preparing for it. The better you are informed, the more interested you will become Think about sharing the trip with someone so you can more pleasantly and vividly reminisce after you’re back home. If you know another aarpie who might enjoy this as much as you, then don’t’ leave home without one. Check out the Senior Center’s Day Trips on pages 7 & 8!
Join a new group...An aarpie is welcome in almost any group, because good members are always in demand...and we aarpies generally make good members. Whether it is a civic-minded, political, social, or special interest group, it doesn’t matter; what does matter is that they probably need you—and probably need you badly...so give them a chance to form lasting friendships—and while you’re doing that, you’ll know the satisfaction of helping others. The benefits are all yours, and often very gratifying. In any case, get involved and stay involved. The Senior Center has many different groups and we are always looking for new members to join! Try your hand at the Party Planning Committee, join the Silver Memories or one of the line dance groups. Give quilting a try! It can’t hurt to try something new!

TAX AIDE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The AARP Manitowoc County Tax-Aide Program will be returning to the Manitowoc Senior Center for the 2017 Tax Season! However, we are in need of several volunteer greeters and tax preparers. Preparers work with taxpayers directly; filling out tax returns and helping them seek a refund. All claims are filed on the computer, no paper forms will be filed. Experience isn't necessary — AARP will train you on the latest tax preparation forms and software. Training for new tax preparers is held in Green Bay where volunteers are trained and IRS certified to prepare simple state and federal returns. AARP does reimburse for mileage. Greeters welcome clients, help organize their paperwork, manage the overall flow of service. Training for greeters includes reading a booklet and taking a simple five question test. Experience is NOT necessary! Please contact the Manitowoc Senior Center at (920) 686-3060 if you are interested! Beginning in October, we will be taking appointments for free, one-on-one computer lessons. Appointments take place on Thursday afternoons and are one hour in length. Appointments are required. Our fantastic volunteer, Ron, is very knowledgeable about computers and enjoys helping others learn too! Whether you have questions about your own computer or want to know how to do something on the Center’s computers, Ron can help you! You are never too old to learn something new! Call 686-3060 to register! *Members Only.

The inner, pale-green rind of watermelon contains chlorophyll, a pigment that helps prevent bad breath & body odor, and the black seeds (try them toasted) are good sources of B vitamins and several minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, iron and copper.
Watermelon has more lycopene than raw tomatoes Watermelon juice may relieve muscle soreness Watermelon is a fruit & a vegetable You can eat watermelon rind & seeds Watermelon is mostly water Some watermelon are yellow
Let’s Get...
Using only black seeds from the melon, rinse them under a colander to make sure they are free of watermelon pieces and spread them on a baking sheet to dry. Drying outdoors in direct sunlight works well, but they can be patted dry too (although they roast better when completely dry). In a frying pan over medium high heat turn seeds until they are roasted. Dissolve one tablespoon of salt in tablespoon of water and pour into frying pan. Stir occasionally until evaporated. Cool completely before shelling and eating. Try roasting them in the oven like pumpkin seeds and experimenting with different spices, by making them sweet, or salty!
Seedless watermelons aren’t genetically modified, but created by crossing a melon with 22 chromosomes with a melon with 44 chromosomes. The result is a sterile watermelon. These melons produce immature white seeds that are perfectly safe to eat. Seedless watermelons were first created over 50 years ago.
The CDC now says we should eat at least seven servings of vegetables a day, but which kinds are best? The following are super foods, low in calories & high in fiber, and they contain unique phytochemicals, or antioxidants, that boost your health. It’s important to eat a wide variety of colorful fruits and vegetables to reap the health benefits.
Super Red: Red bell peppers, tomatoes & beets—Red contains lycopene, which shows promise in fighting certain cancers. Super Purple: Eggplant, cabbage, potatoes, & kale—Purple contains anthocyanins which give these veggies their colors and help ward of heart disease by preventing clot formation. Super Orange: Carrots & sweet potatoes—Orange contains beta carotenes which may prevent certain cancers, reduce the risk of heart disease and improve immune function. Super White: Cauliflower, mushrooms & onions—White can help lower blood pressure and protect against stomach cancer. Super Green: Spinach, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, collard greens & bok choy—Green contains lutein, which may reduce the risk of heart disease & stroke and guard against age related macular degeneration. Also, sulforaphane was found to detoxify cancer causing chemicals before they do damage to the body.
20 Benefits: Improve your balance and muscle tone while reducing your risk of injury. How to perform Wall Slides: Stand with your back against a wall and step your feet out from the wall about 18”. Then lower yourself down into a squat by sliding down the wall. Stop at the point where you can feel your muscles working. [Use the back of a chair at your side for balance if needed.] Keep both of your feet pointing forward and keep your knees centered over your ankles. Hold for 1520 seconds and repeat 3-5 times. You can squeeze a volleyball or playground ball between your knees during the exercise to isolate the inner quads. Of course, the deeper you go, the more challenging the exercise. Just don't go past a 90 degree angle or allow your knees to drift forward past your toes so that you avoid excessive stress on your knees. This exercise can also be done with a stability ball. Called a Ball Squat. Lean against the ball so that your back is against the center of the ball. Slowly lower yourself following the same guidelines as the wall slides above. Source: whyiexercise.com

The Red Hat Tea is held the second Friday of every month at 1:30p.m. at the Senior Center. All ladies are welcome. ♥The Hostess for August was Elma Castro and with some friends did a wonderful job of organizing the Salad Luncheon. And what great salads we had, along with some extras. Thank you to everyone who made this a fun event. I hope nobody went home hungry. ♥The August birthdays were Darlene Tech and Betty Walske. We will not ask their ages. ♥The hostesses for Sept are Joy Krejcarek, Kathy Fischer and Terry Prigge. There will be copies of the hostess list for everyone. We have combined the months of December and August together because both months are just organizing. There is no food to bring for a tea. We are thinking of going to the Two Rivers Senior Center for a fish boil for the luncheon that we usually have at a restaurant. This will give our members a chance to go to a fish boil. ♥Queen Kathy brought up the idea of having a spring pot luck with the Two River’s Red Hatters. It would not be like the picnic, everyone would bring a dish to pass. The only cost to us would be the beverage. Let Kathy know how you feel about this idea. ♥At the Sept Tea , a collection will be taken up for the Domestic Violence Center. This will be strictly voluntary and no money will come out of the treasury. ♥ We are having a display at the Place Setting Exhibit this year. The theme is a Red Hat Christmas. If you have any Red Hat ornaments you would like us to use, please bring them to the Sept Tea. Please put some form of identification on them, so we know the owners. ♥I will have pictures from the coronation for the singers to pick up. If anyone wants pictures I can have more copies made. ♥If you have any ideas for programs, please let Kathy know. ♥In July of 2018, the Midwest Red Hatters are meeting at The Grand Hotel , on Mackinac Island. If you think you would like to go, there is a $40 event fee, which includes a full breakfast and a five course dinner daily, private wine reception, afternoon tea, all gratuities. The room rate, with four ladies to a room is $220.32 per night. Other costs will be transportation there. I have heard that this is an experience of a lifetime. You are treated like royalty. It will not be an inexpensive four days, but if you feel you need to be pampered, this is the place to go. There are ladies going from Green Bay, so we can go as a group. ♥Berdeva has had a pacemaker put in, Gloria is leaving us for New Mexico, (this is a good reason to visit New Mexico) and Betty is healing up fast and will soon be causing trouble (only kidding, I think). Funny bone Tickler A Red Hat Grandma took her four year old grandson to the zoo. The highlight of the trip was when the peacock displayed his plumage. The grandson was amazed. That evening he couldn’t wait to tell his father, “Dad, guess what! I saw a Christmas tree come out of a chicken.” Have a great Red Hat day.

his drama based on true events focuses on legendary athlete Jesse Owens (Stephan James) and his inspiring journey to overcome racism at home and abroad, culminating in his triumphant track-and-field performance at the 1936 Berlin Olympics under the tutelage of gruff Ohio State coach Larry Snyder (Jason Sudeikis). At the same time, Owens also contends with a rivalry with German competitor Carl "Luz" Long (David Kross), while Olympic committee members Jeremiah Mahoney (William Hurt) and Avery Brundage (Jeremy Irons) deal with Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels (Barnaby Metschurat) and his desire to make the Games a celebration of Aryan supremacy. Carice van Houten co-stars as controversial filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl. Directed by Stephen Hopkins.
