How to Register for a Program

Recreation is the experience that results from freely chosen participation in physical, social, intellectual, creative and spiritual pursuits that enhance individual and community wellbeing.”

(Framework for Recreation in Canada 2015, Pathways to Wellbeing)

The City of Miramichi Community Wellness & Recreation Department will engage residents of Miramichi in meaningful lifelong recreation experiences that enhance individual and community wellbeing by providing access to enjoyable, high quality, sustainable, and accessible recreational experiences. Recreation plays an important role in our everyday lives. Recreational experiences, programs and facilities are used by the public, for relieving stress, physical exercise, socialization, and to get out and enjoy nature.

Facilities

Miramichi Community Wellness and Recreation aims to ensure that all facilities are safe and enjoyable for all users. Parks, trails, and recreation facilities are important in creating a sense of place, which helps bring our community together. These facilities provide critical connections for residents through the natural environment, recreational pursuits, historic appreciation, and social and cultural events.

With the increase of use of our outdoor facilities, the City of Miramichi recognized the importance of receiving input from our residents on their perceptions of our current outdoor parks and recreation experiences. The 2022 City of Miramichi Outdoor Park and Recreation plan was developed by the community and continues to shape the future of outdoor recreational experiences. With input received from the public, this plan guides the future upgrades and developments of outdoor recreation facilities throughout the City to better meet the needs of the community.

The City has made significant investments in upgrading its outdoor spaces, including upgrades to Queen Elizabeth Park, Station Wharf Marina, Elm Park, Howard St. Rink, construction of the Howard St. All-Wheel Skatepark Facility, dedicated pickleball courts, opening of the Miramichi Off-Leash Dog Park, shade areas in public spaces, and the commitment to providing safer and more connected active transportation routes throughout the City. The City continues to implement the recommendations from the 2022 Outdoor Parks and Recreation plan; various upgrades to existing parks, playgrounds, and sports fields are planned for 2024, including the replacement of sports field lighting at City Field, upgrades to the infield surface and parking areas at Memorial Field, replacement of the playground at Carrol St. Park and update of performance area at Ritchie Wharf.

Over the past year, the City has continued its focus on the long-term planning for key outdoor spaces identified in the 2022 Outdoor Parks and Recreation Plan. The City has worked towards developing updated concept plans for the following recreational spaces: Memorial/Harkins Recreational Hub, Ian Baillee Recreation Hub, Ritchie Wharf, Waterford Green, and the Anderson Mill Waterfront Trail.

The City continued their commitment to furthering its effort in providing an active transportation network that will connect all areas and residents throughout the City. The implementation of the 2021 Miramichi Active Transportation Master Plan will help create a vibrant, walkable, and wheelable community along the riverfront; one that will be attractive to new residents, retain young families and reassure seniors they can age in place. In the Fall of 2022, the City of Miramichi began the implementation of this plan by completing work on the Northern Spine which included shoulder widening along the King George Hwy. for walkers and bikers, development of a waterfront trail from Jane to Hennessy St., and the installation of a safe crossing at the round about in Nelson. In 2023 the City developed their first section of paved trails along the Chatham Waterfront Trail. This new paved trail has provided a more walkable and rideable trail system along the waterfront in the Historic Downtown Chatham District and connects to trails systems at England’s Hollow.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the public who took time in ensuring their input was heard into shaping the future of our community.

Community Development

Miramichi Community Wellness and Recreation has enhanced its focus on community development by taking a community development approach to program service delivery.

The department will strive to provide support to community driven events, initiatives, and programs. An example of this is the Community Development Grant program that provides support to projects proposed by groups, organizations and individuals which help make our community stronger and more connected. Information on this program can be found at the following link: https://www.miramichi.org/ community-development-grants

Programming

As you will see from the multiple programs and activities in this brochure, Miramichi Community Wellness and Recreation staff and the many volunteers, and volunteer associations have worked extremely hard in providing safe positive recreational opportunities for all residents. We are always looking for new programs and initiatives that meet the needs of our changing population. If you have ideas, suggestions or comments, the department would like to hear from you. You can contact our department in person at our office located at 94 General Manson Way, by phone at (506)623-2300 or by emailing us at miramichirecreation@miramichi.org.

Miramichi Community Wellness and Recreation would like to thank you for exploring the many recreational opportunities available in our community and hope you are able to find the programs, services, and facilities that allow you to live a healthy active lifestyle, and a sense of belonging in our community.

Miramichi Community Wellness & Recreation Department is excited to partner with Miramichi Pickleball to offer lessons for youth this summer!

Pickleball is a fast-paced sport that has many similarities to tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It is played on a level court with short-handled paddles and a hard plastic ball that has holes through it. The ball is volleyed over a low net by two players in singles competition or by two pairs of players in doubles. The sport can be played either indoors or outdoors.

This introductory program introduces the fundamental skills where you will learn the rules of play and the etiquette of the sport!

These preschoolers learn to jump into chest-deep water by themselves and get in and out wearing a lifejacket. They’ll submerge and exhale underwater. Wearing lifejacket, they’ll glide on their front and back.

These youngsters will try both jumping and a sideways entry into deep water while wearing a lifejacket. They’ll recover objects from the bottom in waist-deep water. They’ll work on kicking and gliding through the water on their front and back.

Advanced preschoolers will learn to do solo jumps into deeper water and get out by themselves. They’ll do sideways entries and open their eyes underwater. They’ll master a short swim on their front wearing a lifejacket and gliding and kicking on their side

These youngsters get more adventuresome with a forward roll entry wearing a lifejacket and treading water for 10 sec. They’ll work on front and back crawl swims 5m, interval training and get a giggle out of whip kick.

Ages 5+ years

Levels Range on a continuum where previous level is expected to be fully completed before going on to the next.

These beginners will become comfortable jumping into water with and without a lifejacket. They’ll learn to open their eyes, exhale, and hold their breath underwater. They’ll work on floats, glides, and kicking through the water on their front and back.

These advanced beginners will jump into deeper water and learn to be comfortable falling sideways into the water wearing a lifejacket. They’ll be able to support themselves at the surface without an aid, learn whip kick, front & back crawl, and swim 10m on their front and back and be introduced to flutter kick interval training (4 x 5 m).

These junior swimmers will dive and do in-water somersaults and handstands. They’ll work on 15m of front crawl, back crawl and 10m of whip kick. Flutter kick interval training increases to 4 x 15m.

These intermediate swimmers will swim 5m underwater and 25 m lengths of front & back crawl, whip kick, and breaststroke arms with breathing. Their new bag of tricks includes the completion of the Canadian Swim to Survive Standard. They’ll cap it all off with a front crawl sprint over 25m and 4 x 25m front or back crawl interval training

They’ll develop strength and power in head-up breaststroke sprints over 25 m. They’ll easily swim lengths of front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke, and they’ll complete a 300 m workout
