O’Fallon Update The Official Quarterly Publication of the City of O’Fallon, Missouri Autumn 2010

O’Fallon, Missouri: Best City, Best People! O’FallonTV wins award for humorous public service announcement O’FallonTV, take a bow! The City of O’Fallon’s Communications Department, O’FallonTV, is the Grand Prize Winner of the National Recreation and Park Association’s (NRPA) “2010 Save Our Parks! PSA Contest.” The public service announcement, What If There Were No Parks?, was written, directed and produced by O’FallonTV staff. The PSA can be viewed on YouTube at www.youtube.com/ OFallonTV. The NRPA contest was held to boost public awareness of the difficulties that parks throughout the country are facing due to budget cuts and a struggling national economy.
t
he City of O’Fallon has once again made Money magazine’s prestigious list, “America’s Best Places to Live” and this time, our City has been named as Missouri’s top City. This continues an amazing five-year run that has seen our City included on both Money and RelocateAmerica’s lists of America’s best cities. I am honored and humbled to be the Mayor of such a great City. I know the main reason for our success is you, our residents, who live and work in our community. You make this City what it is, and you are responsible for keeping it great. I’d especially like to thank:
• • •
The wonderful teachers and administrators in both our public and private schools for helping our students become twice as proficient in math and reading as the nation’s average. Our local business owners and managers who have propelled the City’s job growth rate to 44.75% between 2000 and 2009. That’s a higher rate than nine of the top 10 cities on Money’s list. O’Fallon’s dedicated police officers, firefighters and emergency personnel. You can take credit for our City’s low crime rate and overall health of our community.
Clearly, O’Fallon’s quality of life is due to the people who make things happen for the better. That’s why we need your input! To guide our City in being the best it can be, please respond to the online citizen survey posted on the City’s website, www.ofallon.mo.us. There are only a few questions per survey, so make your voice heard. Thank you for making O’Fallon a great place to live, work and enjoy life!

O’Fallon residents are invited to weigh in on a variety of key topics each month by taking a short online survey posted on the City’s website, www.ofallon.mo.us. The surveys are brief, about 5 to 8 questions. One new survey will be posted each month in September, October and November. (Surveys also were posted in July and August.) The more people who respond, the more accurate and useful the survey response will be.

Roscoe’s Den www.ofallon.mo.us/ES O’Fallon’s refuse service rates lowest in area
Need a place to bring recyclable items?
Did you know that you can compare the cost of area trash and recycling services by looking at the “Multi-City Comparison Chart” posted on O’Fallon’s Environmental Services website? The chart shows that each City or business has varying charges for residential trash and recycling containers, trash and recycling collection, yard waste and so forth. You can also see that O’Fallon’s rates for monthly service are the lowest.
You are invited to drop off recyclable materials at one of O’Fallon’s two blue, industrial-sized recycling receptacles. One is stationed in the west parking lot at T.R. Hughes Ballpark, and the other is in the Monticello Plaza parking lot (3700 block of Highway K).
Free bulky item drop-off O’Fallon residents may bring many items that are too large to fit into trash containers, such as carpeting or large appliances, to the City’s waste transfer station at 1572 Progress West Lane between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 20. The service is free to O’Fallon residents with a valid photo ID and who are current on their trash/recycling bill. Go to www.ofallon.mo.us/ES for a list of acceptable and unacceptable items (such as yard waste). Questions? E-mail staff at ofallonrecycles@ofallon.mo.us or call 636-272-0477
Got yard waste? Yard waste cannot be accepted at the O’Fallon transfer station, and it is illegal to mix yard waste with trash or recyclables. However, residents have three options for yard waste disposal:
• •
•
Sign up for yard waste collection by calling 636-272-0477. Call Hansen’s Environmental Wood Resources at 636-3791830, and arrange to drop off yard waste at a special rate of $.50 cents per bag or bundle, or $8 per cubic yard for loose material. Residents must bring a photo ID showing their O’Fallon address.
Residents can recycle cans, glass and plastic bottles, all types of paper, aluminum foil and pie tins, and cardboard or chipboard boxes. Please note, containers used for chemicals like pesticides or motor oil, plastic grocery bags or Styrofoam cannot be accepted at these locations.
Thanksgiving refuse collection schedule O'Fallon's Thanksgiving day trash and recycling collection will move forward one day through the week. Regular trash pickup scheduled for:
•
Compost lawn and leaf clippings, or apply them as mulch around trees, bushes and plants.
Roscoe’s Tip: Help keep trash from littering your neighborhood! Please “bag” trash and recyclables whenever possible to keep loose items from blowing away when they’re loaded into the Environmental Services truck.
