Veterans Memorial Walk marks 10 years Help O’Fallon finish “Brendan’s Playground” The dream of building an all-inclusive playground here in O’Fallon is almost fulfilled! Construction on the playground in Westhoff Park already has begun, but we need your support to raise those last few remaining funds. You can put your name – or your company’s name – on one of 10 adorable insects that will watch over the playground for generations to come. You can “name” your insect with a donation as low as $1,000. Or, if you would like to offer your support at another level, we will work with you to make sure your generosity is honored appropriately. To become a sponsor of Brendan's Playground, please contact the O’Fallon Parks and Recreation Office at 636-379-5575. Learn more about the playground at www. ofallon.mo.us/LetsPlay.

re you looking forward to getting more active with cooler fall weather? With dozens of events and programs listed in the City Newsletter and the Parks & Rec Guide, O’Fallon offers outstanding opportunities for the whole family to get out and about. For example, the Renaud Spirit Center’s exercise facilities and indoor pool will be available, free, at the RSC Open House & Live Well Expo on Saturday, September 24. Then, on the 25th, shop for original art and sample some of our local brews at the Celebration of the Creative art fair in Fort Zumwalt Park. The fair’s hours are 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on September 25, with free admission, art activities and live music. O’Fallon’s popular Fall Festival & Craft Bazaar will be held October 7 – 8. Admission is free and activities include the Friday Night Street Dance, festival booths, more live entertainment, and the Field of Fun for kids on Saturday. On November 11, which is Veterans Day, please join us as we honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and mark the 10th anniversary of O’Fallon Veterans Memorial Walk. Since its completion in 2001, thousands of visitors have come to honor and thank our veterans and soldiers for their service. In recent ceremonies, service medals were awarded to Korean War and Vietnam War veterans. It was the first time since returning home that many of them had been honored for putting their lives on the line for their country. Throughout the season, O’Fallon also offers great volunteering opportunities for you, your family, civic group or church. Just look inside these pages for programs in need of volunteers, or visit www.ofallon.mo.us/volunteer. Have a safe and active Fall!

Roscoe’s Den www.ofallon.mo.us/Green O’Fallon’s record-breaking recycling program

Seasonal yard waste collection ends in December

With the help of residents, the City of O’Fallon continues to lead the metro area in recycling! In June, the City collected a record 604 tons of recyclables, which was the most tonnage collected per month since the Environmental Services Department began in 2002. The City is continuing to collect an average of 40 more tons each month than last year. And the drop-off containers in the parking lots at T.R. Hughes Ballpark and Monticello Plaza are heavily used.

Weekly yard waste collection for the 2011 season ends on the second Friday in December, which is December 9. Weekly collection will resume on the second Monday in March, 2012. It is illegal to dump yard waste into storm drains, or to mix yard waste with trash or recyclables. Yard waste also cannot be accepted at the O’Fallon transfer station. However, residents have several options available for yard waste disposal.

Free one-day bulk waste drop-off in November

O’Fallon residents are invited to bring acceptable items that are too large to fit into their trash containers, such as carpeting or furniture, to the City’s waste transfer station at 1572 Progress West Lane between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 19. The service is free to O’Fallon residents. Visit www.ofallon. mo.us/ES for a more complete list of both acceptable and unacceptable items. Or, contact staff at ofallonrecycles@ ofallon.mo.us or call 636-272-0477.

O’Fallon’s curbside collection for appliances Residents can opt to have many large items, including large appliances, picked up at the curb year-round. To schedule a pick up, call 636-272-0477. Cost of the service is $20.

Thanksgiving refuse collection Thanksgiving Day trash, recycling and yard waste collection will move forward one day through the week. Regularlyscheduled pickups for Thursday, November 24, will move to Friday, November 25, and Friday’s collection will move to Saturday, November 26.

Roscoe’s Tip: Recycling creates jobs! The U.S. recycling industry generates $236 billion dollars each year, and it’s growing, with more than 56,000 recycling and reuse businesses employing over 1 million people, nationwide.
