Heritage & Freedom Fest highlights a summer of fun

t

his summer, we will once again come together to celebrate our nation’s independence at the Heritage & Freedom Fest on July 2 - 4. This year marks the 30th anniversary of this wonderful event, and we will be adding a few special features to celebrate. In addition to the nationally-recognized musical acts, including Darryl Worley, Chuck Wicks, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Eve 6 and Five for Fighting, we will be adding a special Family Night on Friday, July 2. During Family Night, you and your children can come out and enjoy the carnival at discounted prices. Check out pages 2 - 4 for all of the details on this year’s festival. Don’t forget to join us the morning of Saturday, July 3, for my favorite event of the year, the annual Heritage & Freedom Fest Parade. This year’s theme is “Memories of America;” it begins at 9:30 a.m. at Third and Main Streets and concludes near the festival grounds. Make sure to check out this issue of O’Fallon Update and our Parks and Recreation Guide for more exciting events and activities in O’Fallon. You’ll find something to do for every age and every taste. And, remember, while you’re out having fun, “Keep it in the ‘O’” by shopping and dining at our local businesses. Have a wonderful summer! I’ll see you at the Festival!

Thank you, O’Fallon residents!

O’Fallon’s 2010 General Municipal Election Results

In April, the City’s recycling broke the record – again! Last December, the City collected 527 tons of recyclables, the largest monthly total in the City’s history. Then, in April 2010, crews picked up 533 tons, setting a new record. “O’Fallon residents are really getting behind our City’s recycling efforts,” said Jim Wenzara, Director of O’Fallon’s Environmental Services Department. “Over the past five years, O’Fallon’s overall volume of recycling has increased nearly 28%. With our program, residents can put all their recyclables into one cart – all their plastic bottles, glass bottles, paper, boxes, foil, cans and aluminum containers. “We are extremely grateful that people are recognizing the value of this worthwhile program, which lowers the City’s expenditures, and helps protect our environment, too.” For more information about O’Fallon’s refuse and recycling service, visit www.ofallon.mo.us/ES. Or, contact staff at ofallonrecycles@ofallon.mo.us, or 636-272-0477.

On Tuesday, April 6, voters elected one City Council member each for Wards 1-4, and two Council members to serve in the City’s new ward, Ward 5.

Free Bulky Item Drop-Off O’Fallon residents are welcome to bring many items that are too large to fit into trash containers to the City’s waste transfer station at 1572 Progress West Lane between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, August 14 – 15. The service is free to O’Fallon residents with a valid photo ID and who are current on their trash/recycling bill. For information about the bulk-waste drop-off, holiday collection schedules or yard waste go to www.ofallon.mo.us/ ES. Or contact staff at ofallonrecycles@ofallon.mo.us, or 636272-0477.

Roscoe’s Tip: Going on a picnic? Please look for the bright blue recycling containers in our City’s parks, and recycle bottles, cans, paper and cardboard cartons.

Our newly-elected and re-elected City officials are: Ward 1 - Rick Lucas Ward 2 - Jim Pepper Ward 3 - Dan Haney Ward 4 - Jeff Schwentker Ward 5 - Mark S. Perkins Mike Pheney (one year term). Voters also approved two ballot issues:

• The annexation of eight parcels into the City of O’Fallon. The O’Fallon City Council approved propositions related to the annexation of these properties into the City, and voter approval was required to complete the annexation.

• The establishment of a business license fee to cover the cost of collecting or hauling trash or waste materials from commercial or industrial facilities in the City. Following the election, Rose Mack also was appointed to the Council by Mayor Bill Hennessy and the City Council. Mack, who previously served as an O’Fallon alderwoman from 1992 – 1996, will serve the final year of the term in Ward 2. The Ward 2 seat was vacated as a result of redistricting to create five wards.

Crime Mapping available on the O’Fallon Police Department website The O’Fallon Police Department continues to lead in providing easy access to the information you need. Check out our new “Crime Mapping” link at www.ofallon.mo.us/ PD to get information on crimes in your neighborhood, access the registered sex-offender database, and to view informative reports on crime in O’Fallon. "Information is power, and we hope that giving the community access to this information will help our residents prevent crime in their neighborhoods," says Chief Roy Joachimstaler. “This is just another example of the City of O'Fallon serving as a leader in law enforcement innovation and in bringing transparency to all aspects of government."
