Learn to Swim O

’Fallon’s Learn to Swim program is built on teaching aquatic and safety skills in a logical progression. Our goal is to teach children and adults how to swim and be safe in and around the water. The program is composed of 11 course levels:

Aqua Learning: Preschool: Preschool Plus: Level 1: Level 2: Level 3: Level 4: Level 5: Level 6: Level:

Shrimp I and II, Pollywog Turtle Seahorse Explorer Submarine Clipper Sailor Adventurer Barracuda Adult

Aqua Learning: Parent and child participation is required. Class size is limited to eight parent-child couples. Pollywog: Class ratio is four to one instructor. Parents are required to be in the water the first four classes. Preschool – Level 3: Class ratio is six children to one instructor. Levels 4 – 6: Class ratio is eight children to one instructor. Adult: Class ratio is eight adults to one instructor. Participants will move to the next class or skill level when all skills from the previous level are mastered. Some classes may seem repetitive, but we want swimmers to perfect their skills in order to advance safely. Please keep in mind that children learn at different paces and it’s common to repeat a class.

Which class is right for my child? To ensure your child’s success in the Learn to Swim program, it’s important to register children for the appropriate level. Children who have participated in the swimming program should register according to the last class successfully completed. Each child must pass a particular level before proceeding to the next.

Aqua Learning This program helps children ages 6 months to 3 years become comfortable in and around water and prepares them to learn how to swim. The class is divided into two sections: Shrimp I and Shrimp II. Please note: Classes may seem repetitive because they are introductions to water.

Shrimp I • Ages 6 – 18 months Parent-child or guardian participation in the water is required. The instructor will demonstrate techniques as parents learn how to safely guide children and help them advance at their own pace.

Art Exhibits The Cultural Arts Center Gallery is open, free, during regular business hours in the Renaud Spirit Center. The exhibit schedule below may change. For the most up-to-date information, please check www.renaudspiritcenter.com.

Rhonda Schrum: Recent Work Through July 15 Medium: Mixed media, painting Rhonda Schrum is a retired high school art teacher who currently teaches art classes to adults through St. Charles Community College, Project LEADD and several galleries. She is on the board of the St. Charles County Arts Council, and she frequently exhibits her stitching, surface design and crochet works at the Lillian Yahn Gallery. Rhonda also serves as the regional representative of MOFA (Missouri Fiber Artists). This exhibit is an extension of last year’s survey of Rhonda’s fiber pieces and focuses on more recent material.

Bryan Wieczorek: Boys of Summer July 22 – September 2 Medium: Painting, drawing Inspired by local baseball legends Ozzie Smith and Stan Musial, O’Fallon native and graphic designer Bryan “Wiz” Wieczorek channels his nostalgia for America’s original pastime into his baseball-themed paintings and drawings. Wieczorek uses a colorful palette to paint baseball icons like Jackie Robinson and Babe Ruth, and a one-color scheme to enshrine tomorrow’s stars on St. Louis’ own major league team. A series of five vibrant baseball pitch paintings is the highlight of the exhibit, as is a simple sketch of fan favorite Yadier Molina drawn in red conté (chalk). “I try to make art that I know other people will enjoy,” said Wieczorek. “In St. Louis, that is St. Louis Cardinals baseball! The game of baseball is something that I’ll always cherish for the father-son bond it brought about for me and many others.” Samples of Bryan’s artwork can be found on his Etsy webpage at bryanwiz.etsy.com.

The Junior Theatre program for ages 7–11 will present this original sea-faring melodrama written exclusively for the OTW Youth Program and directed by Emily McClaine.

The Lady Pirates of Captain Bree Thursday and Friday, June 16–17, 7 p.m. Saturday, June 18, 2 and 7 p.m. Gangway for this swashbuckling musical comedy with a host of hysterical characters and a spectacular score by Bill Francoeur. When the crew of the Kayla May abandons ship upon sighting the lady pirates in the distance, Captain Jennings appoints a makeshift crew of motley prisoners and Fergus, a sailor who can’t swim, to protect his wealthy passengers, the Prescots. as the lady pirates take over the ship. Along with Captain Bree’s hearty crew of mean and nasty mates (and a couple of new recruits in training who keep forgetting to be rough and tough), there’s haughty Professor Bidwell and pretentious Madam Prescot constantly battling for special treatment and respect (ha!) from the pirates. Samuel Prescot masquerades as a girl to avoid becoming shark bait, and Julia Prescot bursts with desire to join the lady pirates, much to her aunt’s dismay! After the pirates send Thomas the cabin boy out to sea with a ransom note demanding gold from the British in exchange for the Prescots’ lives, the pirates auction off the male prisoners to do their dirty work and show Julia the ropes of pirating. But what’s in store when Thomas returns with a British fleet set on hanging the pirates for their deeds? Madam Prescot and Bidwell are equally set on seeing Captain Jennings hang for his cowardly submission to the lady pirates. Both cast and audiences will love the swashbuckling ending as the two captains work together to save their crews from the British. Bill Francoeur’s zesty music adds the perfect touch of authenticity to this spirited pirate play. From the suspense of “The Plank” when Professor Bidwell’s life is in the pirates’ hands to the belly laughs of “Shipshape and Bristol Fashion” when the pirates order the grumbling prisoners to swab the decks, audiences will be humming catchy sea shanties including “Welcome Aboard” and “They’re a Nasty Lot.”

Auditions for OTW’s production of The Diary of Anne Frank Sunday, August 14 12 p.m., O’Fallon Municipal Centre (City Hall) Call-backs will be given Monday, August 15, at 7 p.m. Production dates are Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 4–6 and 11–13. O’FallonThreatreWorks’ open auditions for the classic drama, The Diary of Anne Frank, will be held on the stage at the O’Fallon Municipal Centre (City Hall). Auditioners should come prepared for cold readings from the script and bring a resume and current photo. In this powerful adaptation of the book, Anne Frank emerges from history as a living, lyrical, intensely gifted young girl who confronts her rapidly changing life and the increasing horror of the times with astonishing honesty, wit and determination. Based on the true story of the lives of eight people hiding from the Nazis, The Diary of Anne Frank captures the claustrophobic realities of their daily existence – their fear, their hope, their laughter, their grief. Each day for two dark years, Anne’s voice shines through. “When I write, I shake off all my cares. But I want to achieve more than that. I want to be useful and bring enjoyment to all people, even those I’ve never met. I want to go on living even after my death.”

Ask the Doctor On the first Monday of every month from 6–7 p.m., meet Dr. Scott Grogan, a board-certified Chiropractic Physician, by the desk in the fitness center for answers to your health and fitness-related questions. Dr. Grogan completed his full body certification in Active Release Technique in 2011, giving him a unique approach to the treatment of patients by addressing not only the joints but the surrounding soft-tissue as well. Dr. Grogan utilizes the “joint-by-joint” approach to patient care, which emphasizes the impact that the kinetic chain (ankles, knees, hips, shoulders etc.) can have on the entire body. Through functional analysis Dr. Grogan will locate the true dysfunction and source of the problem to arrive at an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. Through mobilization of the joints and by placing a heavy emphasis on soft-tissue treatment and rehabilitation, his goal is to provide fast, effective care and empower patients to take control of their own health.

Just for Kids O

ur Just for Kids program offers a great way for parents and grandparents to spend quality time with young children or take a little time for themselves while their children participate in a class. Children also benefit by socializing with others in enjoyable classes that can include singing, dancing, creating art and learning new skills. Look for new classes and family favorites every quarter! Young children attending without a parent must be completely potty-trained and able to use the restroom independently. If your child is not potty-trained but would like to participate in one of our programs, please call 636-474-8111 for information on making arrangements.

Classes must meet the minimum enrollment to avoid cancellation, so please register early! If minimum enrollment is not met, then classes will be cancelled five days in advance of the program.

Youth Martial Arts Tae Kwon Do This 6-week Martial Arts program will focus on the traditional Korean form of Tae Kwon Do known as Chung Do Kwan. This style is based on explosive movements, devastating power and self-discipline. All students begin training at the “no belt” level. After learning the eight basics and the first form they will be invited to test for the white belt. Students will progress through a series of techniques and belts at their own pace and will NOT necessarily test each session. Because each student progresses at his or her own pace, testing will be at the discretion of the instructor. Children who would like to progress at a faster pace may register for more than one class.

If you are interested in watching one of the classes to see if it is something your child would be interested in, you may do so the last week of the session. This includes classes offered the weeks of August 15 and October 3. Tyke Kwon Do • Ages 3–5 Kids’ coordination will improve and they’ll gain confidence as they learn basic karate skills in this introductory class. Children should wear comfortable clothing. Class meets in the Activities Room. (Minimum enrollment is seven; maximum is 20.)

Youth Soccer League Kids love our exciting, eight-game leagues which focus on soccer skills, rules and fun! Leagues fill quickly, so register early! Games are played at Sports Park on Saturdays between 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Parents, we need volunteer coaches! Parent coaches are eligible to have one child’s registration fee reduced if slots are available. Starting July 21, an additional $12 late fee will apply to all registration. Registration ends Thursday, August 4, or when the program fills. Eligibility is based on a child’s age as of August 1, 2016; however, children who turn 4 as of October 29, 2016, may participate in the 4 and 5-year-old leagues. The Coaches Meeting will be held August 27 at 8 a.m. for Pee Wee Coaches and 9:30 a.m. for all other leagues. Sorry, we do not accept team/player requests from parents, only roster requests from coaches. Please note: Roster requests do not register a child for the program and it does not guarantee a child a spot in the program. Practices are NOT a part of the league fee, so refunds or team changes will not be made to accommodate practice schedules.

These programs supplement the O’Fallon Soccer league by providing an additional day of coaching each week to strengthen players’ skills. For more information, visit www. coresoccertraining.com or contact the CORE Director at 314-635-8880 or info@coresoccertraining.com. Programs will be held in Sports Park. Classes may be cancelled or combined, depending on participation.
