NEW!
V+
Friday, May 16 Come and join us for a night of family fun! We will kick off the evening with our first, ever, nighttime 5K obstacle course race, lit by the light of the moon and glow sticks. The obstacles will be fun and challenging. Some will require athletic ability and others will require you to use your noggin. Participants who successfully master each obstacle will be given a glow bracelet at that station. Participants who surmount all the obstacles and have the bracelets to prove it will receive a prize at the finish line. If an obstacle seems too difficult, you can choose to go around, but you will not receive a glow bracelet at that station and you will be disqualified from receiving the special prize at the finish line. If this type of race isn’t for you, don’t worry! The evening includes music, refreshments and an outdoor movie. Registration for the race is required, but admission is free for the entertainment and movie. Ask the Doctor On the first Wednesday of every month from 6–7 p.m., meet Dr. Scott Grogan, a board-certified Chiropractic Physician, by the desk in the fitness center for answers to your health and fitness-related questions. Dr. Grogan graduated from Logan College of Chiropractic in 2011, and then earned a Masters of Sports Science and Rehabilitation from Logan in 2012. Dr. Grogan also completed his full body certification in Active Release Technique in 2011, giving him a unique approach to the treatment of patients by addressing not only the joints but the surrounding soft-tissue as well. Dr. Grogan utilizes the “joint-by-joint” approach to patient care, which emphasizes the impact that the kinetic chain (ankles, knees, hips, shoulders etc.) can have on the entire body. Through functional analysis Dr. Grogan will locate the true dysfunction and source of the problem to arrive at an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. Through mobilization of the joints and by placing a heavy emphasis on soft-tissue treatment and rehabilitation, his goal is to provide fast, effective care and empower patients to take control of their own health. Dr. Grogan has a passion for athletics. He is very involved with the Crossfit community, and he has both competed with and treated competition teams. He’s also served as the team physician for community college athletics, American Legion baseball, and for the Ballwin Race Series.

RSC Success Story: Kathy Richardson RSC Member since July 2012
I
Ask the Front Desk about nominating an RSC member for “Member of the Month.” Or, tell us your Success Story!
have always loved being actively engaged in protecting my health. When my doctor told me to make diet changes, to walk more and to do weight-bearing exercises, my husband treated me to a Renaud Spirit Center membership. The Renaud Spirit Center offers everything. At first, I was caught up in attending fun classes like Body Sculpt, Step, and Deep Definition. But then I realized that to better target my issues, I needed muscle and bone-strengthening exercises. Searching the Internet, I found workouts designed to build muscle, and also learned that the exercise rebounder and certain yoga positions are helpful for bone-strengthening. At the RSC, a personal trainer introduced me to the various weight machines and helped me find the correct settings. This summer I started training three days a week with weights. Many of the exercises are done with free weights, and I’m grateful for the tips on my form and the encouragement that other members give me. The key for me is to have a predetermined plan to reach my goal, with a set number of reps, or repetitions, strictly defined rest time, and supersets. And I need to vary the plan, such as doing three sets of 15 with a 30-second rest, four sets of 10 with a 60-second rest, or five sets of five with a 90-second rest. I also need to write down the weight lifted and increase the intensity (number of pounds or reps) with each workout. With high-intensity workouts, the goal is to reach muscle failure by the end of the last set. Muscle failure means only that your muscles have reached a point where they can’t perform a rep with the proper form. It’s fun to see the improvement, and to be able weight-lift beyond what I originally imagined I could gives me a sense of accomplishment. In addition to high-intensity strength-training workouts three days a week, I exercise on the rebounder for 30 minutes three days a week, and do yoga for 20 minutes twice a week. It’s ironic that the week I was selected as Member of the Month, I took off for recovery (but no more than one week)! However, I don’t think my weight training frequency is optimal, and to keep on making progress, I may need more recovery time than I’ve been allowing. In sum, if I could share some of what I’m learning, it’s this: be sure to write down a plan and track your progress. For high intensity workouts, go for muscle failure with the weights, making each session count. When you’re ready for a change, take a short time out and set up a new plan. Most of all, have a goal, enjoy what you’re doing and take time to appreciate your results.

This 10-week Martial Arts program will focus on the traditional Korean form of Tae Kwon Do known as Chung Do Kwan. This style is based on explosive movements, devastating power and self-discipline. All students begin training at the “no belt” level. After learning the eight basics and the first form they will be invited to test for the white belt. Prior to the black belt exam students will progress through a series of techniques and belts. Testing will occur the ninth week of the session. Because each student progresses at his or her own pace, testing will be at the discretion of the instructor.

The Box Office opens one hour before each show. As the drama opens, a 19-year-old has just stood trial for the fatal stabbing of his father. “He doesn’t stand a chance,” mutters the guard, as the 12 jurors are taken into the bleak jury room. It looks like an open-and-shut case until one of the jurors begins opening the others’ eyes to the facts. “This is a remarkable thing about democracy,” says the foreign-born juror, “that we are notified by mail to come down to this place and decide on the guilt or innocence of a man, of a man we have not known before. We have nothing to gain or lose by our verdict. We should not make it a personal thing.” But personal it does become, with each juror revealing his or her own character as the various testimonies are reexamined and the murder re-enacted. Tempers grow short, arguments become heated, and the jurors become 12 angry men and women. As the jurors reach their final verdict, the tense scenes will electrify the audience and keep patrons on the edges of their seats.

Grant Kniffen
O’Fallon Photo Club’s Annual Exhibit January 10 – February 21 Medium: Photography Showcasing the best of recent work in color and black-andwhite images by the club’s membership, which includes professional and non-professional photographers. For details, contact palirish@sbcglobal.net.
Through January 3 Medium: Painting Grant Kniffen’s artwork is rooted in traditional American and regional themes. “I started off, like many kids, wanting to be a comic book artist,” he said. “That evolved into a great love of the illustrators of the ‘Golden Age,’ especially N.C. Wyeth, who gave visual life to the imagination in the same way special effects do in the movies of today. I also had a great love of the American West that was stoked from the many westerns I watched as a kid. Charlie Russell and Frederic Remington were chief among those influential artists. Finally, the regional work of Missouri’s own Thomas Hart Benton has been influential in my work. In addition to Benton’s subjects, his use of strong color, contrast, and dynamic composition still resonates with me today.” Currently, Kniffen applies non-traditional approaches to his favorite themes, with multiple views, expressive use of color, and varying from realism to abstraction and combinations in between in the same painting. Kniffen, who lives in Dardenne Prairie, recently retired from a 29-year teaching career at Parkway North High School in Saint Louis County. He earned a B.S.E. in Art from Truman State University in 1984 and a Masters in Studio Art from Lindenwood University in 1989. In 1995, Grant was selected “Secondary School Art Teacher of the Year” by the Missouri Art Education Association. And the Parkway School District named him the “High School Teacher of the Year” for the 1996–1997 school year.
Oak Leaf Artists Guild, Treasures of Oak Leaf February 28 – April 11 Medium: Painting, drawing, photography, collage “Treasures of Oak Leaf” is an exhibit of original oils, acrylics and watercolor paintings by Guild members. Learm more about the Guild at www.oakleafartistguild.org.

St. Louis Original Taste Tour

NEW!
This culinary tour of St. Louis begins with Mama Toscano’s, the #1 supplier of ravioli on The Hill (St. Louis’ best-known ItalianAmerican neighborhood) for a ravioli-making demonstration and tasting. Boasting the best ravioli in St.Louis, Mama Toscano’s hand-makes their signature toasted ravioli daily. Next up is Fortel’s Pizza Den in St. Louis for a bite of pizza, followed by lunch at the Bevo Mill, recently restored to its original grandeur, including a working windmill. Completed in 1916, the Bevo Mill was commissioned by August A. Busch, Sr., who dreamed of having an authentic Dutch mill in his native St. Louis. Lunch will be a choice of two classics: beef tips in red wine sauce or Hahnschen Schnitzel (breast of chicken in wine sauce), and the signature Bevo Salad. After lunch we’ll step across the street to the Bosnian Europa Market for browsing and shopping for imported European foods. Next, we’ll head to Ted Drewes Frozen Custard in South St. Louis for a small hot fudge sundae or a mini chip concrete. Our final stop of the day will be the St. Louis Art Museum to see the museum’s beautiful, newly-completed wing. The trip’s cost includes motor coach transportation, lunch, food samples, our tour guide, admission and tours, taxes, and gratuities. Registration ends May 12. Close-toed shoes are required for the ravioli-making demonstration. 39257

Learn to Swim O
’Fallon’s Learn to Swim program is built on teaching aquatic and safety skills in a logical progression. Our goal is to teach children and adults how to swim and be safe in and around the water. The program is composed of 11 course levels:
Aqua Learning: Level: Preschool: Preschool Plus: Level 1: Level 2: Level 3: Level 4: Level 5: Level 6: Level:
Shrimp I and II Pollywog Turtle Seahorse Explorer Submarine Clipper Sailor Adventurer Barracuda Adult
Aqua Learning: Parent and child participation is required. Class size is limited to eight parent-child couples.
Which class is right for my child? To ensure your child’s success in the Learn to Swim Program, it’s important to register children for the appropriate level. Children who have participated in the swimming program should register according to the last class successfully completed. Each child must pass a particular level before proceeding to the next.
Aqua Learning This program helps children ages 6 months to 3 years become comfortable in and around water and prepares them to learn how to swim. The class is divided into two sections: Shrimp I and Shrimp II. NOTE: Classes may seem repetitive because they are introductions to water.
Shrimp I • Ages 6 – 18 months
Levels 4 – 6: Class ratio is eight children to one instructor.
Parent-child or guardian participation in the water is required. The instructor will demonstrate techniques as parents learn how to safely guide children and help them advance at their own pace.
Adult: Class ratio is eight adults to one instructor.
Morning Classes
Pollywog: Class ratio is four to one instructor. Parents are required to be in the water the first four classes.
38882 38880 38885 38887 38886 38889
Preschool – Level 3: Class ratio is six children to one instructor.
Participants will move to the next class or skill level when all skills from the previous level are mastered. Some classes may seem repetitive, but we want swimmers to perfect their skills in order to advance safely. Please keep in mind that children learn at different paces and it’s common to repeat a class. Weekday classes at the RSC meet twice weekly for four weeks and last 35 minutes. Saturday morning sessions last 40 minutes and meet for seven weeks.
