Light festival 18.–27.11.2016

Lumo Light Festival Oulu shines a light on Oulu city centre for the fourth time, in the darkest season of the year from 18th to 27th November. The theme of Lumo Light Festival Oulu this year is The Hidden Oulu and it illuminates the city with numerous local, national and international light installations to a brightness never seen before. Some of the Lumo Light Festival installations will change every day to provide something new and exciting to see for the whole family. Installations are set up around the town, from Heinäpää to Ainola Park and Pikisaari. Lumo Light Festival Oulu events are open and free, however, for some you need to sign up in advance. Lumo Festival is organised by the City of Oulu in cooperation with a number of exhibitors.

I think people never truly disappear without a trace: we can still hear words, steps and even breaths taken from long ago. Persons from the past wander in the park, meet each other in the street and enjoy fresh air on the balcony. In UV light, figures bent from wire and sprayed with fluorescent paint come to life like ghosts. These translucent characters blend in with their environment, and surroundings of the old quarters become part of the work. The stylised figures remind on line drawings, but are three-dimensional.

Worm-like cater-pillars come from eggs, they squirm as new-born babies; then they grow and get arms and legs and start running and playing around on the branches like preschool children; after all they spread out their wings and fly away from home like teenagers. Creatures are made from steel wire and are rather light and transparent. However, they have been galvanized and became quite firm and water resistable.
