CITY OF POWELL RIVER RECREATION ACCESS PROGRAM - OPTION 1

Who is eligible? Residents who qualify as Low-Income according to Stats Canada.

What is it? 52 passes for swimming, skating, and fitness at the Recreation Complex per year.

How to get it: Apply at the Recreation Complex.

CITY OF POWELL RIVER RECREATION ACCESS PROGRAM - OPTION 2

Who is eligible? Residents who are currently receiving BC Benefits (income assistance).

What is it? 52 passes for swimming, skating, and fitness at the Recreation Complex per year.

How to get it: Apply through the Ministry of Social Development & Economic Security and Social Innovations.

Who is eligible? Grade 5 students who attend school in the Powell River Region.

What is it? Free admission to swimming, skating, or shinny hockey from the day following Labour Day until June 30th.

How to get it: Apply at the Complex's reception desk. Please bring in your birth certificate, care card, or grade 5 report card for verification.

Everyone Welcome Skate: No hard pucks permitted on the ice.

Spring 3 on 3 Hockey

The Spring 3 on 3 Hockey League will run for 7 week and take place 1 evening a week running from the week of April 2nd until the week of 12th. Registration Fee includes all 7 sessions along with a league jersey and wrap up play on the final week. League Organizer will take the registrations and break them down into equal teams prior to the season starting. Volunteer Coaches are the foundation of this league and are essential to its success, if you or someone you know would like to coach, please contact Sport & Recreation Program Coordinator Alex Craig at acraig@powellriver.ca .

Ready to dive into beach volleyball? This session is perfect for beginners and young athletes looking to build a strong foundation in the game. We'll spend the first half of each session developing essential skills—passing, setting, serving, and hitting—through engaging drills and coaching. Then, we’ll put those skills into action with fun, structured gameplay! Whether you're new to the sport or want to improve your fundamentals, this program will help you learn the rules, build confidence, and enjoy the game in a positive, supportive environment. Come join us on the sand and get ready to move, play, and have fun! Co-ed sessions.

The Babysitter's Training Course is aimed at young people turning 12 years of age within the calendar year or older who want to demonstrate their capabilities by completing the course under responsible direction. The Babysitter's Training Course is loaded with special features such as: Child Development and Behavioral Problems, Safety, Handling Emergencies, Games and Play Activities, Children with Special Needs, and more. Certification is included! Remember to pack a lunch!

The Home Alone Program is designed to provide children with the necessary skills and knowledge to be safe and responsible when home alone for short periods of time. Join John McDowell - hunter, mushroom picker, clam digger & fishing connoisseur as he teaches you the very basics, all the way to the more detailed aspects of fishing. The course will cover different techniques, baits, best locations, equipment, fishing strategies, and even cleaning or canning utilized for those wanting to learn all aspects of fishing. This one-day course will cover all your fishing interests. Pack a pen and notebook, lunch, and come absorb knowledge from one of Powell River’s most experienced fishermen.

Are you new to the weight room? Attend a one hour orientation session to familiarize yourself with our cardio and weight equipment and learn how to use them safely and effectively.

DATES/TIMES: Orientations will be scheduled at a time that is agreed upon between the participant and the weight room attendant.

PERSONAL TRAINING

Our certified trainers can provide training one on one or in group session. Whether you are new to fitness, need personalized motivation or sport specific training, our personal trainers can develop a program individualized to you and your specific goals. Our trainers can motivate you by assisting with goal setting, providing feedback and accountability. Speak to the Health and Fitness Program Coordinator for more information and to set up an appointment.

All sessions are 1 hour. Sessions include you and your trainer in a one on one 60 minute session addressing your personal related goals.

The youth training sessions highlight the importance of a proper mobility warm up, how to activate and engage your working muscles, safe training mechanics, and stretches needed for a thorough cool down. These private or semi-private sessions educate youth with lifelong skills to keep them healthy. Youth training specializes as an introduction to lifting or to improving athleticism. The programming is individualized to each youth’s needs, whether they need attention for mental health conditions or chronic diseases, diverse learning styles, healthy physique training methods, or are working towards high performance athletic goals

Aquatic Personal Training Packages

All session are 45 minutes. The viscosity of the water provides an excellent source of resistance when incorporated into an Aquatic Personal Training Program. This resistance allows for muscle strengthening without the need of weights. This program is especially useful for those with arthritis, healing fractured bones, or who are overweight.

Weight Training, Spin and Pilates instructor. She is also a certified Personal Trainer on land and in water. Bianca is fascinated by the human body and all its capabilities and the science that always discovers new and improved workouts to either get people in better shape, helps them to recover from injuries or improve their everyday mobility.

Gerrimae has had a lifelong passion for movement, food, and people. She was the owner of Thrive Fitness, went back to school to pursue an education in nutrition, became a certified indoor rowing instructor then opened My Element Health and Fitness. For 15 years she shared her knowledge and energy, empowering women to move and thrive. She has broadened her knowledge base greatly by becoming a nutrition coach to allow her a wider approach

that support their day to day life. She has learned from personal experience how to overcome fears and blocks and develop new skills that promote well being and accomplishment. Gail is especially adept at engaging with clients to realize important life style challenges and integrate new strengths and interest to their day to day life. Her good humour and positive attitude have inspired many people to make long lasting changes and gain confidence in their abilities.

Kimberley Gage is a BCRPA Personal and Older Adult Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor and Yoga Teacher. The Hearts in Motion Walking Group is designed to encourage people to participate in regular physical activity by walking. The group meets in the lower foyer of the complex and will start their walk from there. Formerly the Brave Hearts Walk & Talk, this program has now expanded to included people living with a variety of chronic health conditions.

Therapeutic Yoga for Back Care

Would you like to take care of your back and prevent injuries? Or maybe you have chronic back issues such as low back pain. Lead by Regina, a certified, experienced Yoga Therapist (C-IAYT), this program focuses on building confidence and a sense of safety to support a healthy back. Participants will build strength and develop increased awareness of the spinal curves to explore movements safely as well as how to use a full yet gentle breath and connect movements of the inner core. Each class includes a relaxation practice at the end that will support managing pain and stress. The series will be adapted to individual needs of the participants.

Ages 6 to 12 years, who have completed Swimmer 1 or Preschool 4.  Learns to tread and jump into deep water, develops kicking skills and is introduced to front crawl.

Ages 6 to 12 years, who have completed Swimmer 2 or can perform 10 meters of front crawl.  Learns whip kick and headfirst entries such as dives and somersaults into deep water.

Ages 6 to 12 years, who have completed Swimmer 3 or can perform 15 meters of front and back crawl. Practices the swim to survive standard and learns components of breaststroke.

Ages 7 to 13 years, who have completed Swimmer 4 or can perform 25m of front and back crawl and can complete the swim to survive standard [roll entry + 1 min. tread + 50m swim]. Learns to complete 25m of breaststroke.

Ages 8 to 14 years who can demonstrate swimmer 5 skills and can perform dives, stride entries and compact jumps into deep water. Develops lifesaving kicks such as eggbeater and scissor kick, and interval trains a 300m workout developing stroke strength and endurance.

Ages 8 to 14 years; will perform legs-only surface support for 45 sec.; sprint 25m breaststroke; swim 100m of front crawl and back crawl and sustain a 350m workout. Swimmers develop individual fitness to meet a timed 100m swim.

Ages 8 to 14 years; will learn lifesaving sport skills and further their stroke efficiency through drills. Eggbeater kick and increased fitness levels are developed to meet a 200m timed swim under 6 minutes. First aid focuses on unconscious victims and obstructed airway procedures.

Ages 8 to 15 years are challenged with a 300m timed swim under 9 minutes, 600m workout and a 25m object carry. Lifesaving skills include use of rescue aids, defense methods, victim removals and supporting a victim in shallow water. First aid focuses on treatment of bone or joint injuries and respiratory emergencies.

Next steps

Those aged 13+ years may continue their lifesaving and leadership training in the Bronze Medal programs. Lifeguard training includes the following mandatory courses: Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, Standard First Aid, & National Lifeguard. Those interested in becoming swim instructors must complete the Bronze Cross first.

An opportunity to increase water comfort and practice the basic building blocks for swimming such as floats, glides, breath control, and basic kicking drills. This class will remain in the shallow end, although deep water skills will be introduced to those who are ready for it.

Bring your own kayak to the pool on selected days to practice your skills in a safe and warm environment. 4 kayaks will be permitted each session.
