City of Sumner Newsletter

Welcome to Sumnertime!

June 2006--Summer Fun

Coming Up!

Around this time every year, I start looking forward to summer. Not to mowing the lawn or swatting mosquitoes, but to the type of summer we all still dream

about--lemonade afternoons, cherry pie picnics, fishing, swimming--basically,

a good, old-fashioned, Norman Rockwell kind of summer. And, I’m convinced

Monday, June 19, 6-7 pm Red Apple Parking Lot

there’s no better place to find that kind of summer than in Sumner. Maybe it’s because we’re only half a letter off from actually being “Summer.” But, I think it’s because of you. You just make it delightful to head out to any event in the city. Whether it’s listening to music in Heritage Park or check-

ing out vintage motorcycles, everything listed in this newsletter will be full of Sumner’s smiling neighbors, ready to greet each other and enjoy the day together. That’s even better than cherry pie. (But maybe not rhubarb pie. Just kidding.) Perhaps the Gershwins will forgive us if we say it’s “Sumnertime, and the livin’ is easy.”

Town Hall Saturday, August 5, 9-10 am City Hall, Council Chambers Mayor Dave Enslow invites you to come for an informal discussion about Sumner. What’s working? What could be better? What have you always wondered? No registration required: simply stop by for coffee and share your thoughts!

Handcrafts, Food, Fun--It’s All an Art! The Sumner Summer Arts Festival returns August 4 and 5 to fill Main Street with artists, food, entertainment, and fun. Over 120 artist booths will feature a wide range of creative wares to spark your interests. Plus, artists must produce all of their own artwork, so you will only find quality, handcrafted items that are unique in design. There will also be a music stage for entertainment and children’s games and fun at Heritage Park.

After you have checked out the art booths and listened to the music, you are bound to be hungry. A wide range of food will be available, all provided by Sumner-area non-profit groups. Plus, each morning begins with a pancake breakfast held in the concession area. So, you can enjoy good, summertime festival food and raise funds for local non-profits all at the same time! For more information, visit www.sumnerartsfestival.org.

ASK DR. SUMNER (Summer School Edition)

What Do I Do with My Out of Town Guests? Here’s what Dr. Sumner suggests: 1) Spend some time in Sumner. Visit the Ryan House or shop for treasures! 2) Play tourist. Explore Tacoma’s new museum district. Go to Seattle for fresh flowers at Pike Place Market. Ride a ferry just for fun! 3) Take a hike. Options range from Sumner’s trails to the majesty of Mt. Rainier’s Wonderland Trail. 4) Relax. Pick up some books at a local store or library. (Perfect with a hammock or lounge chair.) 5) Savor the flavors. Visit a nearby farmer’s market or fruit stand to make sure you share the taste of summer. You can e-mail Dr. Sumner at DrSumner@ci.sumner.wa.us.

July 25th Give an Hour, and A Bit of Blood The City of Sumner has invited Puget Sound Blood Center to come and be available for us all to donate blood. Last year hospitals ordered more than 250,000 units of red blood cells and 60,000 platelets. That means that each day, nearly 900 people must register to give blood to meet this ongoing demand.
