I-5 Construction Alert
Go right from Sumner to the Mariners’ game with Sound Transit’s Home Run Service. When a weekend game starts at 1:05 pm, the Sounder train will pick you up in Sumner at 11:17 am and drop you off near Safeco Field at noon. To come home, the train departs Seattle’s King Street Station 30 minutes after the game ends.
Construction work on northbound I-5 between Spokane Street and I-90 in Seattle is expected to require aroundthe-clock lane closures August 10-29. The closures will have significant effects on traffic. When making travel plans, be aware. We also anticipate the Sounder trains to be much busier during this construction time.
Round-trip fare is $8.50 for adults, $6 for ages 6-18 and $4 for ages 65 and up. For more information, visit www.soundtransit.org.

A World of Music Comes to Music Off Main Whatever your travel plans this summer, Music Off Main takes you on a musical tour of the world. From the haunting strains of Gypsy music to the classic sounds of big band, you won’t want to miss any part of this musical journey. July 1 (Sunday), 2 PM Touch of Class at Rainier View Park This special concert follows the dedication of Sumner’s new park. Celebrate with the swinging sounds of big band. July 6, 6:30 PM Kosher Red Hots at Heritage Park Enjoy the rich treasury of Jewish music from the whirlwind klezmer dance music of Eastern Europe to Yiddish musical theater and swing to Spanishflavored love songs of the Sephardim.
This year starts with a special Sunday concert in Rainier View Park before returning to Heritage Park for warm summer evenings.
See You Downtown The flower baskets are up, the sun is out, and it’s a great time to celebrate downtown. Sumner Downtown Association has given us many reasons to spend some time downtown. Surfin’ the Sales, June 22-23 Citizens and stores are cleaning out forgotten treasures to sell to you! Mutts Off Main, July 7 Register your dog for the contests, agility course or Dashing Doxie Race and receive a souvenir pin and participate in the Mutt Parade at High Noon. Vintage Motorcycle Show, July 15 Enjoy the historical and artistic progression of motorcycle technology. Classy Chassis, August 26 If you prefer four wheels to two, come to this classic car, rod, and truck show. www.sumnerdowntown.com
July 13, 6:30 PM Gypsy Soul at Heritage Park Enjoy acoustic rock with Celtic and Americana roots that “stirs the soul and moves the spirit,” says People magazine.
July 20, 6:30 PM Tingstad & Rumbel at Heritage Park Tingstad’s distinctive guitar technique harkens from a Segovian tradition while Rumbel is one of the few performers in the world on double ocarina, oboe and English horn. This rare, Grammy Award-winning combination creates a sound that is unusual and unexpected. July 27, 6:30 PM Bochinche at Heritage Park Bochinche (bo CHIN chay), a Spanish noun, refers to light-hearted gossip, or the noise of a party. Their performances of new and traditional Latindance rhythms from the Caribbean and South America have earned them loyal audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
Art Festival Returns On August 3 and 4, the art of Sumner returns for the annual Sumner Arts Festival. As always, there will be dozens of artists displaying and selling their creations, as well as lots of great food and entertainment. All artists must produce all of their own artwork. There is no mass produced items allowed. This means the artwork at the festival is quality, handcrafted items that are unique in design. A wide range of food is available from one of the many vendors, all of which are non-profit groups from the greater Sumner area. Admission is free. See you there! www.sumnerartsfestival.org

Destination Adventure!
Visiting Mount Rainier After the Flood
Didgeridoo Walkabout July 26, 1 pm Go on a musical expedition to the land Down Under as John Groves performs an assortment of didgeridoos. Discover the musical history and art traditions of the Australian Aborigines.
In Sumner, Mount Rainier presides over us all, especially on sunny days. Some of us can even see “The Mountain” from our windows. The park was hit hard this winter. Because of that, we may hesitate to visit, but this is actually a great summer to go. Here are some ideas for a visit...or two.
Reptile Man August 21, 1 pm Get close to snakes, lizards and all things reptile as the Reptile Man dispels myths of our cold-blooded friends! In the Robert Miller Gymnasium behind Daffodil Elementary. For all ages, free of charge. Sponsored by the Sumner Arts Commission, in partnership with the Sumner-Bonney Lake Parks & Recreation Department. Contact City of Sumner at 253-863-8300 or www. ci.sumner.wa.us
Head to the Park While a lot of roads and trails are closed, a lot are open! Go to the National Park Service web site at www.nps.gov/mora for the latest news on what trails and roads are open. ASK DR. SUMNER: What do I do on a rainy day in summer?
Excellent question! I suggest going to one or more of Tacoma’s museums. Odds are, you haven’t been since Tacoma became quite a city for museums. At the Washington State History Museum, the Great Hall of History takes you across the state and through time--my favorite was going into Roslyn Mine No. 3. Tacoma Art Museum gives you a distinctly Northwest experience of art. I enjoyed Sparkle Then Fade, an exhibit through Sept. 3, that uses light as metaphor!

Sumner Meadows
Take a Swing at Sumner Meadows Golf Links This is a great summer to pick up a club and try golfing. Sumner Meadows has a wide range of activities for everyone from first-timers to youth to aspiring Arnolds and Tigers! Junior Golf Program Ages 8-17 For $50, Birdie Club Limited Benefits gives young golfers the Junior $7 stand-by rate, allowing them to be called to the tee when an opening becomes available; club discounts on range balls; and a USGA handicap and rules book. For $80, Eagle Club Full Benefits also includes golf clinics on Tuesday evenings in summer, discounts on clubs and merchandise, entry for the Junior Club Championship Tournament and more!
Then, it’s just a short walk to the Museum of Glass. You can enjoy the work of world-renowned contemporary artists. I really liked the hot shop; since my doctorate doesn’t include glass, I settled to watch professional artists at work.
Junior Golf Camp July 10-12 or August 7-9 Youth ages 8-17 can learn the basics of golf including etiquette, safety rules, swing fundamentals and enjoy putting
While these three museums, all next door to each other, can fill a day or two...or three, there are a few others in Tacoma. My favorite is the often overlooked (and free!) Karpeles Manuscript Museum, just across from Wright Park at 407 South G St. It might not be flashy, but it houses some of the major documents that have shaped our world. Then, you cross the street to the W.W. Seymour Botanical Conservatory (also free) to enjoy flower gardens even on a rainy day!

As always, there are the Men’s and Women’s Clubs at Sumner Meadows.
