The 582 bus now has trips that link Sounder from the Sumner Station with the Bonney Lake Park and Ride. On these runs, the bus will wait for the train--even if it’s late--before shuttling passengers up the hill. Ride the Rails to Mariners

I-5 Construction Alert

Go right from Sumner to the Mariners’ game with Sound Transit’s Home Run Service. When a weekend game starts at 1:05 pm, the Sounder train will pick you up in Sumner at 11:17 am and drop you off near Safeco Field at noon. To come home, the train departs Seattle’s King Street Station 30 minutes after the game ends.

Construction work on northbound I-5 between Spokane Street and I-90 in Seattle is expected to require aroundthe-clock lane closures August 10-29. The closures will have significant effects on traffic. When making travel plans, be aware. We also anticipate the Sounder trains to be much busier during this construction time.

Round-trip fare is $8.50 for adults, $6 for ages 6-18 and $4 for ages 65 and up. For more information, visit www.soundtransit.org.

From the haunting strains of Gypsy music to the classic sounds of big band, you won’t want to miss any part of this musical journey. Art Festival Returns On August 3 and 4, the art of Sumner returns for the annual Sumner Arts Festival. As always, there will be dozens of artists displaying and selling their creations, as well as lots of great food and entertainment. All artists must produce all of their own artwork. There is no mass produced items allowed. This means the artwork at the festival is quality, handcrafted items that are unique in design. In Sumner, Mount Rainier presides over us all, especially on sunny days. Some of us can even see “The Mountain” from our windows. The park was hit hard this winter. Because of that, we may hesitate to visit, but this is actually a great summer to go. Here are some ideas for a visit...or two.

ASK DR. SUMNER: What do I do on a rainy day in summer?

Excellent question! I suggest going to one or more of Tacoma’s museums. Odds are, you haven’t been since Tacoma became quite a city for museums. At the Washington State History Museum, the Great Hall of History takes you across the state and through time--my favorite was going into Roslyn Mine No. 3. Tacoma Art Museum gives you a distinctly Northwest experience of art. I enjoyed Sparkle Then Fade, an exhibit through Sept. 3, that uses light as metaphor!

Take a Swing at Sumner Meadows Golf Links This is a great summer to pick up a club and try golfing. Sumner Meadows has a wide range of activities for everyone from first-timers to youth to aspiring Arnolds and Tigers! Junior Golf Program Ages 8-17 For $50, Birdie Club Limited Benefits gives young golfers the Junior $7 stand-by rate, allowing them to be called to the tee when an opening becomes available; club discounts on range balls; and a USGA handicap and rules book. For $80, Eagle Club Full Benefits also includes golf clinics on Tuesday evenings in summer, discounts on clubs and merchandise, entry for the Junior Club Championship Tournament and more!

Then, it’s just a short walk to the Museum of Glass. You can enjoy the work of world-renowned contemporary artists. I really liked the hot shop; since my doctorate doesn’t include glass, I settled to watch professional artists at work.

While these three museums, all next door to each other, can fill a day or two...or three, there are a few others in Tacoma. My favorite is the often overlooked (and free!) Karpeles Manuscript Museum, just across from Wright Park at 407 South G St. It might not be flashy, but it houses some of the major documents that have shaped our world. Then, you cross the street to the W.W. Seymour Botanical Conservatory (also free) to enjoy flower gardens even on a rainy day!
