June 2008--Summer Fun

Celebrate the Local This Summer “Our tiny planet, viewed from afar, is a place of swirling clouds And dimmish blue; [Sumner], though lodged large in all our hearts Is invisible at that distance, not much perhaps, But to us it is our all, our place, the opposite of nowhere; Nowhere can be seen by looking up And realizing, with shock, that we really are very small; You would say, yes, we are, but never overcompensate, Be content with small places, the local, the short story Rather than the saga; take pleasure in private jokes, In expressions that cannot be translated, In references that can be understood by only two or three, But which speak with such eloquence for small places And the fellowship of those whom you know so well And whose sayings and moods are as familiar As the weather; these mean everything, They mean the world, they mean the world.” Alexander McCall Smith Espresso Tales Can you think of a better description of why our small city is so wonderful? Mr. Smith was our Pierce County READS author this spring, and in his presentation, he read this poem from one of his latest books. The only liberty I took was swapping out “Scotland” for “Sumner.” A lot of people are staying closer to home this summer because of gas prices. Although some may find this disappointing, in other respects, it could be the perfect opportunity for us to take Mr. Smith’s advice and rediscover Sumner. I hope this issue helps you plan out a lot of fun right here at home for a summer full of the content of small places.

Cutting Back on Gas Use? Take the Three-Day Sumner Vacation! Are you planning on staying in town this summer? Are relatives and friends coming to visit, and you fear the “What’ll we do today” syndrome? Don’t worry! Here are some ideas to help you and your guests get out and enjoy our area.

Day 1, Friday

It’s worth getting up early to catch the 7:37 train out of Sumner and be in Seattle at 8:20 for one of those famous cups of coffee. Parking is tight at Sumner Station, but you have a better chance for a spot on Fridays. A round-trip ticket is $8.50 for adults. From Seattle’s King Street Station, cross 4th Avenue to the bus tunnel, which gives you free and easy access TO GET READY downtown to such attracVisiting Seattle: www.soundtransit.org tions as Pike Place Market, www.visitseattle.org Music Off Main schedule Seattle Art on pg. 3 Museum, Seattle Aquarium, and a short Monorail ride to Seattle Center. Trains start heading back to Sumner at 3:35 pm with the last departure at 5:55 pm. When you get off the train in Sumner, head over to Heritage Park to cap off the day with a free Music

Off Main performance. Tap your toes to close a great day riding the rails to the Emerald City.

Day 2, Saturday

equipment at Siebenthaler, Loyalty and Rainier View parks. The golfers can meet you at one of the parks for a picnic lunch.

Head over to Sumner Meadows for a morning round of golf with beautiful views of Mt. Rainier. Non-golfers and young kids may prefer the grassy spaces and playground TO GET READY Sumner Meadows: www.golfsumnermeadows.org Historic Walking Tour: www.ci.sumner.wa.us Bike Safety on pg 8

After an optional nap in the shade, gather everyone together for an afternoon jaunt. Sumner’s flat land is perfect for a walking or biking tour around town. You may want to follow the historic walking tour (available online) or enjoy the flowers both at Sumner’s commercial gardens

and in beautiful residential neighborhoods. Your day of adventure will leave you hungry for a big dinner. If you’d like to stay outside, consider enjoying a barbeque. Both Rainier View and Loyalty Parks have outdoor barbeques ready for your culinary enjoyment.

Day 3, Sunday

Two things have changed about shopping in Downtown Sumner: A) many restaurants and shops are now open on Sunday (and are less crowded), TO GET READY and B) Downtown Sumner: there are www.sumnerdowntown.com a lot of new stores. In addition to the favorite country and antiques, you can now also shop for paper crafts, hats, candy, and specialty kitchen ware. You can browse both unique creations and brand names such as Vera Bradley, Brighton, Burts Bees, Lang, Life Is Good, Cuisinart and more. In the meantime, nonshoppers in your group may want to enjoy a massage (a welcome option Continued on page 7

So, select your teams and enjoy a little friendly competition. Or, just watch the skaters in the Sk8 park perfect the artistry of their sport.

after the sports the day before) or explore Sumner’s history. A visit to the Ryan House opens up treasures from days past. Those up for a challenge can take the scavanger hunt (below) and see if they can find all these spots in Sumner.

More Options If you’re not TO GET READY too tired yet or have anoth- Visiting Mt. Rainier: www.nps.gov/mora er weekend to plan, there are Visiting Wine Country: www.visityakima.com many more Visiting Tacoma: options you www.traveltacoma.com can choose. These day trips do involve traveling longer distances by car, but a good way to still conserve gas is to meet your friends in Sumner for breakfast and head out in one vehicle!

7

Mt. Rainier Whether it’s your first or fiftieth visit to The Mountain, it’s still spectacular. Once again, you can loop around from 410 to Sunrise over to Paradise and back to Sumner. Don’t forget to stop at the newly renovated Paradise Inn. Wine Country Sumner’s a great place to head out for some wine tasting by taking Highway 410 out to Yakima. The added bonus is the spectacular scenery over Chinook Pass. Down by the Water Puget Sound is also a great spot to go, especially on a hot day. Whether you prefer the beach at Dash Point, Ruston or Pt. Defiance, they’re all an easy drive from Sumner. The bonus in heading into Tacoma is the opportunity to also visit one of the many museums.

Take a Closer Look at the Details of Sumner Think you know Sumner? Try to find and identify all these architectural details. You may not notice them every day, but together, they help make our city unique. Full “hunt” sheets are online at www.ci.sumner.wa.us plus hints and answers! 1

Safety Sally Says, Remember Bicycle Safety Sumner is a great place to ride bikes whether simply for fun or as a transportation alternative to driving. Just remember to be safe!

Wear a helmet. They can reduce head unjuries by up to 85%!

Select a snug, but comfortable fit, and look for labels that show your helmet is recommened by either the American National Standards Institute or the Snell Memorial Foundation.

Dress right. Wear light color clothing that’s easy for drivers to spot and close-fitting clothing that doesn’t get caught in the bicycle’s moving parts.

Obey the rules of the road. All traffic signs, signals and road markings

apply to bikes too. Try to ride on bike trails when you can, but if you do ride on the street, ride on the right side in single file and never face traffic.

When crossing streets, walk your bike. Make sure you stop, look left, look right, and look left again before crossing.

Make sure your bike is in condition. Do a safety check before you ride. • • • • • •

Make sure brakes work smoothly. Check your wheels for loose or broken spokes. Check your tires for cuts or cracks. Make sure your handle bars are tight and turn easily. Make sure your chain is oiled and tight. Have your bike lock with you.
