Relay for Life Aug. 19 - 20 Once again, walkers of all ages will join together for the seventh annual American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Sumner. The event will run from 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19 to 2 p.m. Aug. 20 on the Sunset Stadium track. Every participant is an important part of the fight against a disease that interrupts or claims the lives of loved ones. The survivor lap will kickoff the event at 6 p.m. Friday. All survivors are welcome to join. At 9 p.m. Friday candles will be lit for loved ones touched by cancer. Food, entertainment and other activities will be available throughout the 20-hour event. Sumner’s Annual Classy Chassis Car Show, previously held in the fall, this year is moving to a summer date, Sunday, July 10, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. People who like old cars will love this car show. Hundreds of beautiful cars spread all over the downtown area, on Main Street and the side streets. You can get up close and take a look at these amazing vehicles from yesteryear. Their owners are often nearby and they love to talk about their cars. The Sumner Historical Society hosts an old-fashioned Ice Cream Social at Sumner’s museum, The Ryan House on July 17 at 2 p.m. Come tour the wedding gown exhibits that will be on display along with the other historical artifacts. August 5th and 6th, the 32nd Annual Sumner Arts Festival will be held on Main Street. Artists display their wares in booths set up from the railroad tracks to Wood Avenue. There’s free live entertainment and food booths in the parking lot at Ryan and Main. Main Street merchants take this opportunity, when thousands of people are strolling around downtown, to have special sales. Don’t miss this year’s Cancer Relay for Life at Sunset Stadium at Sumner High School on Aug. 19 and 20, 6 p.m Friday night to 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Each year, the Sumner community surpasses its fund-raising goal and I’m confident 2005 will be no different. The fun starts on July 4th with the kickoff of the 2005 Summer Music Off Main Concerts (Heritage Park at Main Street). We welcome back the crowd favorite “Swing Reunion Orchestra” with a 2 p.m. big band performance. The concert series continues on Friday, July 8th, at 6:30 p.m., with a blues performance by Alice Stuart. Concerts follow on Fridays at 6:30 p.m. through July. There will not be a concert August 5th and Danny Vernon will be performing on August 12th.

PUBLIC WORKS PROJECTS Intersection Project
The Tacoma/Puyallup Street Intersec-tion Project will expand the intersection to better accommodate heavy truck traffic. The project should start in early July and be complete this summer.
Eastside Park
The construction of Phase I of the Park is underway (street improvements, trails, grass, basketball court) and will be done this summer. The Arts Commission and City staff are completing the details and amenities for Phase II.
Valley Avenue East Construction on Valley Avenue East in front of the Old Cannery has been under way since May. The contractor is finishing the underground utilities. Traffic on Valley Avenue East from the Stuck River Bridge to Houston Road will be restricted to a single lane during the day. Stuck River Bridge The work on the renovation and repainting of the bridge has resumed. It was delayed when the grease-like coating under the bridge took longer to remove than originally planned. With help from the State bridge funding, the project scope was expanded and the material will be removed. The decking will also be replaced. The total project cost is $1.4 million, which is being paid by the State. Zehnder Street The reconstruction of Zehnder Street was awarded to MCD McDonald & Company for $695,000, within the estimated budget. The project will start in July .

Northwest Trek Day Camps for Children
National Night Out Aug. 2
The day at Northwest Trek near Eatonville will fly by for children as they participate in hands-on discovery, wild crafts and adventuresome learning. Each week offers a different interactive, age appropriate program. Morning snack included.
National Night Out is on Tuesday, Aug. 2. Officer Boulay and Amy Parker will be going to block watches on Garden, 157th Ave., Parker Rd., Daffodil Ct. E., 75th St. Ct. E., and Park St. as a start. Before the event, informational flyers will be distributed to all the block watch captains with further details.
