The 3.45km twin-tunnel underground rail link will unlock our public transport network and transform the way we travel around our city. When City Rail Link opens in 2024, Aucklanders will have new world-class stations and a modern rail service that benefits the entire transport network for decades to come. Britomart Station will no longer be a dead-end station. Instead it will become a two-way through station – doubling the capacity of the entire rail network to carry up to 54,000 passengers an hour. Two new architecturally-designed stations with underground platforms will be built at Albert Street (entrances on Victoria and Wellesley Streets) and Karangahape Road (entrances on Mercury Lane and Beresford Square) – providing new transport connections. City Rail Link will connect with the Western Line at a redeveloped Mt Eden Station – less than 10 minutes from downtown Auckland – opening up the entire rail network.
• Doubles the capacity of the entire Auckland rail network • A train at least every 10 minutes in peak – just turn up and go • More trains in and out of the city more often • Moves the equivalent capacity of three Auckland Harbour Bridges or 16 extra traffic lanes into the city centre at peak times
Manukau Harbour
City Rail Link – the largest transport infrastructure project ever to be undertaken in New Zealand – will help Auckland cater for the demands of this growth.
Benefits
City Rail Link provides Auckland with a modern rail network expected of the world’s best cities. More connections and better frequency will encourage more people to leave their cars at home, easing pressure on Auckland’s roads.
• Significant travel time savings • New and improved connections • Double the number of people within 30 minutes travel of New Zealand’s biggest employment hub
However, the City Rail Link is about more than just improving public transport. It leads the way in integrated transport and urban development. It will provide great residential and commercial development opportunities around the stations to create new urban precincts that support the city’s housing and employment needs and make Auckland a more attractive place to live, work and do business.
• Eases congestion on our roads by providing commuters with a viable transport alternative to their car • Significant commercial and residential development opportunities around the stations, with more than 70 large building projects underway or proposed along the CRL route • Attractive public spaces around CRL stations • Reduced bus congestion in the city centre • Job creation for up to 1600 people during the construction peak.
