CRL MAUNGAWHAU PRECINCT NEW PEDESTRIAN & CYCLIST LINK
Consultation Summary
To help prepare the precinct around Maungawhau Station for future development, City Rail Link proposed a new pedestrian cyclist link that connects Mt Eden Road with Shaddock Street and Maungawhau Station. During September 2024, we asked for feedback on our proposal. Below is what we heard and our response, and a few updates.
Design
Mostly you supported our proposed design. You suggested separated areas for cyclists and pedestrians and to maximise seating, so there’s a range of places to sit including benches and basalt boulders which also help create a low-speed pedestrian friendly area.
Safety
You raised some concerns about safety of the area. Areas will be well lit, and we’ve shared these concerns with Eke Panuku and Auckland Transport for consideration and addressing as part of their pre-development planning.
Station access
You requested the emergency stairs to Fenton St Bridge and Mt Eden Road be opened to access the Western Line platform. The possibility of having a second access to the station is still under consideration by Auckland Transport.
You also requested Ruru Lane stay as a pedestrian/cyclist route to the station. Pedestrian and cyclist access on Ruru Lane will remain open.
Wayfinding
You suggested the new link should connect to the business area at the intersection of Symonds Street and New North Road. While the new link connects to Mt Eden Road, Auckland Transport is reviewing wayfinding opportunities to support the precinct and wider area.
Amenity
You made several suggestions about what future developments could look like. We’ve passed your feedback on to Eke Panuku.
