C5 or North Auckland/Western Line Contract

Contract spans 4.6km of the North Auckland/Western Line across the Maungawhau (previously Mt Eden) station site between Dominion Road in the west and Khyber Pass Road to the east
• Contract connects the North Auckland/Western Line and City Rail Link tunnels

• Demolition work began in 2019, construction in 2020, and all work to be completed in October 2023
• Twin tracks reduced temporarily to one and single line running through the station area continued for 3 years with minimal disruption or delay to services
• Contract involved more than 1.5 million work hours
• More than 150,000m3 of spoil removed
• 25,000m3 of concrete used and counting
• 1.3km long section of track replaced and realigned
• Rebuilt section includes 71 sections of track each 70 metres long, 4375 sleepers, 50 masts supporting 3.75km of overhead electric line
• New track built for maximum speeds of 60kph
• 3 unsafe level crossings removed
• 4 new bridges constructed and one temporary bridge for pedestrians built and later removed
• Design of new bridges reflects the Maungawhau area’s cultural and historic past
• Removed basalt reborn as pavers on streets surrounding site
• Utility diversions included moving the big Huia 2 water main supplying central Auckland away from work site
• Completed works will help improve travel times for rail commuters when the world class City Rail Link opens in 2025
• The C5 contract is the first contract to be completed by Link Alliance.
