TUNNELS & STATIONS The 3.45km twin-tunnel underground rail link includes tunnels up to 32 metres below city centre streets. The twin-tunnel underground rail link will unlock our public transport network and transform the way we travel around the city. The alignment of the underground tunnels generally follows the road network and due to the gradient of the landscape the twin tunnels will vary in depth. At each end of the tunnels (Albert Street and Mt Eden) it will be shallow enough to construct the tunnels using the ‘cut and cover’ method – excavating from the surface, installing retaining walls, constructing tunnels inside the trench and backfilling. The same cut and cover method will be used for Aotea Station and tunnel works between Wyndham Street and Mayoral Drive.
Cut and Cover Tunnel Driven Tunnel Existing Western Line
From Mayoral Drive to Mt Eden, the tunnels will be constructed using a seven-metre-diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM). The tunnel portal will be located just south of the Flower Street intersection.

Set-up and operation of a TBM requires a large worksite to house the pre-cast sections that line the tunnel and to collect the excavated material as the TBM travels forward. As there are limited spaces in the City Centre to establish such a large work site, the Link Alliance’s TBM operation will be at the Mt Eden station worksite.

Mt Eden Station
The station will have two entrances – Mercury Lane and Beresford Square. It will be the deepest station at 32 metres underground and have 150 metre platforms to accommodate longer nine-carriage trains.
The new Karangahape Station is also expected to unlock residential development and generate urban renewal within this colourful inner-city catchment. The station site represents about 2,600sqm of land, so once we finish, there is potential for development on the land we needed during construction. A new laneway and enhanced streetscape will provide easier and attractive walking connections.
