Known for their innovative approach to presenting the tradition and heritage of Indian culture and art, Three Aksha brings the beautiful intricacies of Indian dance and music to public audiences in Three Aksha brings the beautiful intricacies of Indian dance and “Natyashastra: the Oldmusic in a performance at the JCC Auditorium of the KleinLife est Surviving Stagecraft Center on October 30, 2016 at 6 p.m. in the World.” A rehearsal and workshop phase, open to the community, will culminate in a public performance at the JCC Auditorium of the KleinLife Center on October 30, 2016 at 6 p.m. Open to all, these workshops are focused on increasing appreciation and audience attendance for traditional Indian art in Philadelphia and on enabling second generation Indians to connect to their roots in a new place and time. “There is absolute scarcity of resources and knowledge with regards to south Indian classical dance or music,” explains Viji Rao. “In my role as a practitioner and educator in the community, I see the need and necessity to have a workshop/lecture demonstration about the intricate rhythm and pattern that goes into creating a beautiful art form of Bharatanatyam.” The workshops, and ultimately the performance, will be interpreting and learning from Natyashastra. Natyashastra is the oldest surviving text on dance and music in the world. Prior to 200 BCE, artists would pass on their theatrical talent orally from generation to generation. A wise sage known as Bharata collected and documented the best practices in art —from music to dance, drama to costumes and fine art. In doing so, Bharata laid the cornerstone of theatrical arts in India. With its kaleidoscopic approach, Natyashastra has offered a

Old Academy Players presents “The Fourth Wall” beginning November 4, with, from top – Eilliott Rotman, Durell Griffin; bottom – Michele Loor Nicolay, Sarah Labov. ld Academy Players presents “The Fourth Wall” by the award winning playwright, A.R. Gurney. Directed by Annie Hnatko and produced by Steve Hnatko, the show dates are November 4, 5, 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, & 20, 2016. From the playwright who wrote “Love Letters,” “The Dining Room” and “The Cocktail Hour,” comes the profoundly moving and equally funny “The Fourth Wall.” Peggy has become obsessed that her life is a play, and has redecorated the living room with one wall completely blank, the “fourth wall,” representing the “audience.” Her delusion is compounded when people entering the room behave as if they were acting in a play, even belting out Cole Porter songs! With age comes wisdom, but with age can also come irrelevance.

Theatre Exile presents the Philadelphia premiere of “Guards at the Taj” by Rajiv Joseph at Studio X from October 20 November 13, 2016. Photo/Robert Hakalski truth about one of the most beautiful wonders of the world. When asked to perform an unthinkable task, the pair struggle between loyalty, friendship and staying true to one’s self. Previews began on Thursday, October 20, 2016 and press opening night is Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at 8 p.m. The show runs for a total of 21 performances at Studio X (1340 S. 13th Street) through Sunday, November 13, 2016. Tickets are on sale now for $10 to $40 at www.theatreexile.org or by phone 215-218-4022. Please note, this production contains potentially disturbing content that might not be suitable for all audiences. Guards at the Taj is set in 1648 in India, where two Imperial Guards watch from their post as the sun rises for the first time on the newly-completed Taj Mahal—an event that shakes their respective worlds. As the morning light breaks, the wheels are in motion for a startlingly funny existential crisis that stirs their faith in God, the empire and each other. When they are ordered to do the unspeakable, the aftermath forces them to question their concepts of friendship, beauty, and duty, and both characters are changed forever. “The friendship of the two guards is both beautiful and vaudevillian,” said Producing Artistic Director Deborah Block. “The storytelling at times is gruesomely hyper-realistic and at other times humorous or filled with magic. Through the richly drawn characters, Guards allows us to understand how fear can lead us down the road to making us complicit in creating the horrors of our time.” Theatre Exile’s production of “Guards at the Taj” is directed by Exile Producing Artistic Director Block, and stars Anthony Mustafa Adair (“The Invisible Hand” by Theatre Exile, “Disgraced” by Philadelphia Theatre Company) and Jenson Titus Lavallee (Pig Iron School for Advanced Performance Training, “The Seagull” by Moscow Art Theatre School). For Jenson, “Guards at the Taj” couldn’t come for Theatre Exile at a more perfect time with the current state of the world. “There’s the sense of duty in Humayun, which I can relate to, but there’s also the idea of following a much more organic set of rules that Babur abides by,” said Lavallee. “This play really deals with where those two things begin to conflict and how we deal with turmoil in a society that’s feeding us one thing, but deep down we know we should be fighting against it. It’s often how I've been feeling lately. It seems that every day we wake up to news of another devastating [world] incident, but we’re not sure of how to combat the horrors. I feel very much like Babur feels. He seems to have the answers, but they’re seen as ‘radical’ by Humayun. Is radicalism for the sake of peace and beauty even more disruptive than conformity to something we know isn’t right?” The comedy and horror of “Guards at the Taj” take place at Studio X, where the guards will enjoy their first glimpse at the newly built Taj Mahal. While one of the most glorious wonders of the world will be revealed at first light, the set also has some dark secrets and ghoulish surprises. The production team includes Colin McIlvaine (Set Designer), Alison Roberts (Costume Designer), Brad Pouliot (Sound Designer), Drew Billiau (Lighting Designer), Flora Vassar (Props Designer), Jessica Darling (Production Manager) and Rob Edmondson Jr. (Technical Director). Theatre Exile thanks show Honorary Producers June and Steve Wolfson. Award-winning playwright Rajiv Joseph is the author of the Pulitzer Prize-nominated “Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo” and “The North Pool.” Joseph received the Steinberg Playwright Award in 2013, the Laurents/Hatcher Foundation Award in 2015 and the 2016 Obie Award for Best Play for “Guards at the Taj.”

hiladelphia is known for many things—cheesesteaks, rowdy sports fans, and “Rocky” to name a few. Still, when most people conjure up images of our great city, perhaps our most apparent claim to fame is our role in the founding of our nation. Referred to by many as the birthplace of America, there is no better place to celebrate what makes our country great than right here where it all started. On the afternoon of October 30, the Merion Concert Band aims to do just that with a concert titled “This Grand Country.” This first performance of the Merion Concert Band’s 2016-2017 season celebrates the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service and the upcoming presidential election. Featuring music that evokes the picturesque open spaces of our country, pieces dedicated to some of our nation’s presidents, and music that celebrates America, the concert is free and open to the public. Enjoy this concert on Sunday, October 30, 2016, at 3 p.m. at Harriton High School, 600 N Ithan Avenue, Bryn Mawr, PA 19010. The Merion Concert Band, an ensemble of the Merion Musical Society, is an all-volunteer band that has been performing in Lower Merion Township and the surrounding region since 1979. The Merion Musical Society was co-founded by Mary W. Culbert and Joseph Rhode in 1977 with the mission to “foster and promote music and the interests of music in the community.” For information, visit www.merionconcertband.org.

Free Presentation at Immaculata University November 7 n Monday, November 7, at 6 p.m., Immaculata University is offering a presentation in Loyola Hall 127 on the crucial topic of “What Will 9 Billion People Eat and Where Will It Come From? with Linda Froelich, global sustainability director for FMC Corporation and member of the advisory board for Wharton’s Initiative for Global Environmental Leadership. The challenges of feeding the projected population of the world is complicated by competition for land use, food and health expectations, environmental awareness and concerns about climate change which will be addressed by Froelich. She will also focus on the role of sustainable practices and corporate responsibility with industries worldwide addressing these concerns. “We are grateful to have Mrs. Froelich speak at Immaculata, and open a conversation exploring this key issue, explained the Business and Accounting Department Chair, Dr. Charlene Fitzwater. “Along with concern for future generations and the environment, it is imperative to understand how responsible businesses practices respond to world-wide needs and trends. Graduating from the College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, NY, Froelich began her career at FMC in 1977 where she has held several positions in research, development and business. Froelich is a dynamic speaker with a passion for her topic. The event is sponsored by Immaculata’s Environmental Club and the Business Department’s Advisory Board and is free and open to the public. For info, visit www.immaculata.edu/9billion-eat. Immaculata University is a comprehensive, Catholic, coeducational institution of higher education, located on the Main Line between Malvern and Exton, 20 miles west of Philadelphia.

T

Frost/Nixon” stars, from left – Haverford School sophomore Jeffrey Pendergast as David Frost and senior Shea Dennis as Richard Nixon. “Frost/Nixon” is a 2006 British play by screenwriter and dramatist Peter Morgan based on a series of televised interviews that former U.S. President Richard Nixon granted broadcaster David Frost in 1977—about his administration, including his role in the Watergate scandal. The cast includes students from The Haverford School, The Academy of Notre Dame de Namur, The Agnes Irwin School, and Country Day School of the Sacred Heart. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students and seniors, and may be purchased at Ticketleap (https://the-haverford-school.ticketleap.com/frost-nixon/) or at the door. The Box Office opens 45 minutes prior to show time. For information, call 610-642-3020, ext. 1386.

Students on site: Christina Giuliani of Philadelphia, Alaina Sokolski of Ardmore, and Alison Zarella of Ardmore. erion Mercy Environmental Science students embarked on a field study, following techniques ecologists use, to study a large outdoor area to determine its biodiversity. Utilizing specific outdoor equipment and a 10 by 10 meter area divided into nine smaller plots right on campus, students measured physical (non-living) factors, such as temperature, moisture, and wind speed—all which influence biodiversity. Based on their field work, students also determine what biotic critters, such as deer, cicadas, and ants, inhabited the plot. Each student produced a report of her individual plot and compared those results to the eight other sites studied. The advantage of field experiments over strict observational studies is that the investigator has more control over the variables of interest. Student scientists often employ both field experiments and field observational studies in order to draw conclusions and answer important ecological questions.

The Baldwin School’s 2016 Hall of Fame recipients are, seated, from left – Jessica Perrucci Riley ’93, Pat West and Sara Greenberg ’05; standing, from left – 2000 Head Cross Country Coach Suzanne Valutas and Assistant Coach Heather Ho. he Baldwin School celebrated its 2016 Athletic Hall of Fame on October 13, 2016. Four individuals and one team were recognized for their dedication to athletics and their achievements. The Athletic Hall of Fame celebrates excellence and extraordinary achievement in athletics. These impressive athletes have been instrumental in helping mold Baldwin athletics to what it is today. These women are proof that Baldwin girls’ determination and commitment extend beyond the classroom. This year’s recipients are: Sara Greenberg ’05 – Sara’s athletic contributions as a three-sport athlete during her Baldwin years (lacrosse, soccer and basketball) culminated with her being recognized with Baldwin’s highest athletic recognition, the White Blazer Award. Her Baldwin days found Sara as both leader and athlete, serving as captain of all three sports. After leaving Baldwin, Sara played Division I lacrosse at Yale University and achieved postgraduate success in athletics through her participation as a member of Israel’s National Women’s Lacrosse Team and played in the 2014 World Cup in Toronto. Jessica Perrucci Riley ’93 – Jessica’s athletic contributions as a three-sport athlete during her Baldwin years (field hockey, basketball and lacrosse) culminated with her being recognized as a White Blazer Award Winner. Jessica served as captain of all three sports in her senior year. She received many accolades that included All Main Line, member of the Private I’s All-Star Team for field hockey and basketball in senior year and a candidate for Main Line “Athlete of the Year.” Jessica played Division I lacrosse and field hockey at Lafayette College. Presently, Jessica coaches at Summit Lacrosse Club, STEPS Elite Lacrosse of NJ and Kent Place School in Summit, NJ. She is an active board member for Summit Lacrosse Club and Sum it Up Lacrosse. Marjorie Lindsay Reed ’39 – Marjorie’s athletic contributions as a three-sport athlete during her Baldwin years (field hockey, tennis and basketball) culminated with her being recognized as a White Blazer Award Winner. The Reed Scholarship that honors excellence in teaching and is given annually was named in her honor. Patricia West – Beginning in 1980, Pat was the director of Athletics at Baldwin for 21 years, where she taught, coached and mentored many young women. She was involved in founding the Inter-Academic League for Girls, helping to frame its philosophy and purpose, and served as the organization’s first president. She also helped to create Baldwin’s mascot, a polar bear named Winnie, and began the School’s Homecoming and bonfire traditions. After Pat retired in 2001, The Baldwin School established the Pat West Award, which is given every year to a sophomore or junior girl who has played at least one varsity sport and has developed that sport through outside opportunities and has the intention of playing at the collegiate level. 2000 Cross Country Team – In August 2000 when Baldwin’s Cross Country team came together for pre-season training, the mood was optimistic. Head Coach Suzanne Valutas and Assistant Coach Heather Ho had high hopes for a winning season; but not an undefeated season. “The team didn’t dare to dream quite that big a dream,” Valutas said. The team consisted of 22 runners, the largest team in the Inter-Ac League at the time. They gave each other confidence, and everyone was determined to pull together as a group. Each individual set goals for themselves and achieved those goals. They were fortunate enough to have an injury free season and spent time doing a lot of hill work sprints, pool workouts, scavenger hunts and early weekend runs. Their hard work paid off, as the 2000 Baldwin Cross Country team became both State and Inter-Ac Champions. For information, visit the All-School Open Houses on Nov. 3, 2016 at 6 p.m. You can also visit www.BaldwinSchool.org or call 610-525-2700.
